For people who hate to balance their checking accounts.......2001-12-13
Author and member of the "Gen X Generation", James Denton's The X $eries: The Money Guide With Gen X Appeal is a compact money guide tailored specifically to appeal to America's Generation X, with a "don't beat around the bush, cut to the chase" approach to teaching how to manage and invest money in the new millennium. The X $eries is a "how to" and "why to" book for people who hate to balance their checking accounts, let alone an investment portfolio, and offers strategies to make your money work for you without constantly bean-counting to make sure you're in the black. Written in plain, ordinary language with a friendly, entertaining atmosphere and the occasional black-and-white picture of energetic men and women, The X $eries is truly a financial book that anyone and everyone from any generations can read, enjoy, and soundly understand. An excellent and highly recommended introduction to the art of in-vestment.
Not Just for Gen Xers.......2001-10-29
Whether a Gen Xer or not, you will not put this book down. The author presents real practical solutions for those who are living paycheck to paycheck, overwhelmed by debt and not saving or investing for their retirement. At last a better system for planning personal finances for those who hate budgets. Also, by using the tips on "Negotiation-the art of asking", I recently saved ... on an appliance purchase. The X-notes at the end of each chapter provide great summaries to refer back to later. Anyone who reads this book will come away with at least one valuable and easy to implement idea.

Not Good.......2007-01-22
Don't waste your money here. The 'truths' presented are inane. They are so one dimensional that only a paper doll could find them useful. The same simplistic statements are stated over and over without any context or elaboration. The best part of the book is that it is extremely short and a really fast read.
Simplistic Drivel.......2007-01-19
Don't waste the 30 minutes it takes to read (and absorb!) these 'truths'. They are so basic and incomplete that it is like being told to "look both ways before crossing the street". The writing is heavy-handed and arrogant, and has none of the charm or insights of the "What I Learned in Kindergarten" books. Though overcoming childhood adversity and earning a degree is admirable, it doesn't make someone an 'expert'. Use your own common sense: find a different book written with expertise that has insight and value.
Eighty-eight pages of misery.......2004-06-08
This arrogant self-help book is packed with trite platitudes posing as insights. This Mimi Paris (I hope that's pseudonym) is just like any other self-help guru, execpt that she's not able to fill up an entire book. My wife was reading this, and we had a terrific time laughing at it. If you're looking for more than a good chuckle, buy a different book.
guide to live by.......2001-10-09
What a wonderful book. It is truly a guide to live by. When I picked it up, I read it from cover to cover. Since that time, I have read each chapter again several times. The words of the author, come from a person who has lived what she talks about. I throughly enjoyed and benefited from this terrifice book.
Authentic and direct.......2001-08-28
I love Mimi Paris's authentic and direct style mixed with lots of good humor and common sense. Her book is a nice guide to a successful life beginning with each of us taking responsibility for our own lives.

Book Description
In an effort to bridge the gap between budget theorists and practitioners, this book approaches local government budgeting as the internal resource allocation process of a highly differentiated organization that operates in a very political environment, and whose boundaries are particularly permeable during the formal budget process. Written by academics with extensive practical experience in local government budgeting and finance, this text will be equally useful to practitioners, scholars and students. Theory building in public budgeting has been dominated by political science and economics, and these approaches have not produced theories that can serve as guides to action for practitioners or help them understand their action environments. In order to produce theory that has meaning for practitioners, researchers should approach the subject as it is experienced by practitioners. The long-term financial health of local governments requires an integrated approach to public budgeting. This book develops theory that illuminates practice. It recognizes that the budget process is the only organization-wide process that integrates all of the agencies that comprise the government, and thus, the budget must address the long-term consequences of any action. The budget process itself is presented as a vehicle to develop the decision premises and organizational values that will support allocative efficiency and productivity.

A Good Introduction to French Baroque.......2000-04-05
This is a very good introduction to the most famous French baroque composers: Lully, Charpentier, Lalande, Couperin and Rameau. The book gives an account of each of the composers' lives, lists all their works and comments on their style and major achievements. It is easy to read and one quickly gets a basic overview. However, if you are interested in a deeper exploration of the composers' opus, you may find yourself wanting more details. In that case you may want to read "Marc-Antoine Charpentier" by Catherine Cessac for more information on Charpentier or "Jean Baptiste de Lully and his Tragedies Lyriques" by Joyce Newman. Both books are very informative and detailed.
Book Description
Christopher John Boyce was a son of affluence and privilege whose disaffection with America led him to sell to the Soviets sophisticated and highly secret spy-satellite information.
Eventually uncovered and arrested, Boyce was convicted of espionage in Los Angeles, California, on June 20, 1977, and sentenced to forty years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary. Soon after his imprisonment, Boyce--the man prosecutors said had done more harm to the security of the United States than any Soviet agents since the Rosenbergs--escaped.
Boyce was to become America's most wanted fugitive and the focus of an unprecedented, massive manhunt for eighteen months. Scores of FBI agents and U.S. Marshals sifted through hundreds of false leads. They traveled countless miles back and forth across America, to South Africa, through the isolated jungles of Central America. They were called on the carpet by Congressional committees for the often-publicized and embarassing lack of reults.
Although THE FLIGHT OF THE FALCON is a thrilling chase and suspense story, it is also a fine study of character and psychological drama--the metamorphosis of an idealistic young man into a coarse and violent criminal fugitive.
Customer Reviews:
A Fantastic True Story.......2005-07-06
For about two years I have had this thing for reading true escape stories. The Flight of the Falcon is one of the best. It's a story about a smart, young, convicted spy and his escape from prison. I give it only four stars because the author kind of went over board on the whole "follow the false leads" thing. For 18 months they got thousands of leads that went absolutely nowhere and Boyce was well on his way to freedom. But the play by play accounts of each false lead was redundant and tedious. Lindsey took a gamble with that and won.....in my opinion. All the redundancy paid off in a big way with a truly exciting escape story.
good.......2001-07-05
I didn't care about the red herrings the investigators were following. I just wanted to know what Boyce was really doing. So I read only those parts of the book. Those parts were quite interesting.
An Amazing Page Turning Exploration of Manhunt intrigue!.......2000-07-05
I picked this book up in a used book store, and read it in less than a day. I couldnot put it down! At first, I almost felt sorry for Christopher Boyce, but once he started robbing banks to support himself, forget about it. I wonder if today, in July of 2000, if he is still as bitter towards both the government and the CIA
One Great Book.......1999-12-20
Great! I am 15 and have just discovered this great book. My mother had owned it it was about my uncle Duke Smith. Duke his nick name. the book was great a must to read.
Muy bien!.......1998-07-30
I honestly could not put this book down. It was fascinating. Christopher Boyce, convicted spy, escaped from prison and managed to elude the police for something like 18 months! Whoa! Robert Lindsey, who also wrote The Falcon and the Snowman about Boyce and Daulton Lee's actual crimes and trials, came to know Boyce after his incarceration and recounts the events as told to him by Boyce without bias but with a keen, critical eye. A truely fascinating book.

I don't know why.......2006-06-23
I don't know why the other people did not like the book, but i did i like it alot but that's my opinion.
It didn't really fly with me.......2006-01-26
I am a 15 year old kid and a fan of mechwarrior. I had not really read any of the books before but I gave it a try. The word choice was difficult for me because of the foreign words and that my vocabulary is not up to par. As for the book, unless you are a fan of the RPG, computergames, or the wizkids mechwarrior game you will not really have any interest in this book. It is packed with your favorite clans or at least mine the Jade falcon. The book jumps around a lot but the book will tell u place you're jumping to and the date for convenience. Over this entire book will help you better understand the properties of these game and background to your clans.
Worst Battletech book EVER!!.......2005-07-19
This was the novel that killed MW:DA for me. Having read all the Battletech novels, I decided to give the Dark Age novels the benefit of the doubt. They were okay. I felt that I was getting my money's worth. There were minor inconsistencies where the author obviously didn't know their subject matter, but hey, I was willing to overlook it and follow the series.
That's when I bought this book. From sex and nudity to the wholesale slaughter of civillians in order to pacify worlds, this book was offensive on so many levels. The old Battletech books--while dealing with the occasional mature theme--were so skillfully written that these themes were either glossed over or written so that they were appropriate for someone around the age or 9 or 10. I wouldn't let any child read this book (and reviews here on Amazon are stating that the content is getting much worse with the later novels).
This content is NOT what I expect from a game that has been traditionally family-friendly since 1984. I got about halfway through the book before putting it down and swearing off the rest of the series.
The 'talking chicken' book (Far Country) was better than this nauseating piece of drek. Don't waste your money.
A Gem in a Rough Series.......2005-04-24
The previous Mechwarrior: DarkAge books were, um, weak. But Flight of the Falcon breathes some new life into the series. Victor Milan is one of the best Battletech writers.
In this book, the Clans come to life again. The Clans you love to hate: vicious, skilled, myopic, relentless. Not the cariatures of the Clans that have inhabited the last several years of BT books.
I will say this though - I am getting really tired of the Tara Campbell character. That is no reflection on Milan though. He works with the material he is given.
Looking for plotting; found plodding.......2004-09-05
I am an emerging science fiction author. I am also an old fan of the Mechwarrior RPG. I wanted an example of descriptive scifi action to learn from. I made a BAD choice with this book. I forced myself through the first 25 pages and threw this book across the room. Victor Milan's usage of the English language is incomprehensible. It takes him 25 pages to describe three minutes of action - and I use the word "action" loosely. He get's sidetracked in irrelevant topics of internal politics and sordid details of sex between siblings every other paragraph. Victor! Show us the big picture! What's going on?! I don't care about the minutia! You gotta write lean an mean when trying to write action.

Ever wonder what qualifications some strategy guide authors have and what makes them such authorities on the game in question? When it comes to Falcon 4, the long-awaited and generally heralded F-16 jet combat simulation, Prima decided it was best to bring in some big guns. Peter Bonanni and James Reiner are both F-16 instructor pilots and graduates of the F-16 Fighter Weapons School. They also consulted on the development of the game, so it's safe to say that when these guys talk dogfighting tactics, they know what they're talking about. Still, this is the sort of book that is probably best suited for hardcore flight sim enthusiasts (which, come to think of it, is pretty much the demographic matching Falcon 4 players...). Beginning with some basics on the game and the various gameplay options, the book gives readers a quick and dirty guide to instant action missions, multiplayer dogfights, and full-fledged campaigns. After that, this guide is all business--I mean, any book that devotes separate chapters to laser-guided bombs and the AGM-65 Maverick missile is a hardcore title indeed. Studying the wealth of information in this guide, Falcon 4 pilots should be able to improve their skills in a hurry. In fact, after going through this manual a few times, you might just feel ready to take a real F-16 out for a spin...
Book Description
In-depth strategy, tactics, and info straight from members of the development team and not available in the game manual
How to get maximum performance from your Falcon
Basic fighter manuevers, including positional, attack, and intercept geometry
All about Falcon avionics and weapons systems
Detailed diagrams that illustrate military flight concepts
Advice from real Air Force F-16 pilots
Customer Reviews:
You can't fly Falcon 4.0 without this book.......1999-10-29
The Falcon 4.0 Simulator (*not* a game) is a very good facsimile of an F-16 and its operating environment. The sim manual is very comprehensive and very good, but this book should be required reading if you want to further your air-to-air and air-to-ground skills and compete in the campaigns, especially if you fly multi-player. I reference this book and review the tactical concepts constantly.
Of particular importance are the anecdotes, or personal *real-life* stories that Pete presents at the head of each section. These are more than just "war" stories, they are stories with an important lesson to be learned, and they apply to the *virtual-life* experiences that you'll have in the sim. If you fly Falcon 4.0, you need this book.
Falcon Freak.......1999-08-23
5 stars eh? yeah the book deserves more than five if you ask me.If you thought that manual was huge this would look very thin in front of it but boy o boy it sure have a punch in it.What can i say more it really improved my games and now i am enjoying the game more and more Thanx Peter And James for such an excellent book
A Complete package.......1999-02-04
Written by Pete "BOOMER" Bonanni and Jamie "LINUS" Reiner, 2 actual F-16 pilots gives this book an even more authentic feel and there true experiences they share with the reader sure give you an idea of the tough job a Viper pilot has. The book is well thought out with 25 chapters and 7 appendix's devoted to all areas of the sim. It will surely add to your enjoyment of Falcon 4.0 ORDER IT NOW!!!

One of the best!!.......2004-03-23
This was probably the first "grown up" novel I ever read way back in sixth grade. It has always stuck with me. Trying to find a copy has been a bear though. If you like historical novels and can find a copy of this one; you won't be disappointed!!
My First Favorite Book.......2003-10-12
I first read this book when I was in grade school, a long time ago. I have reread it several times since, always from the library. I believe this book got me interested in history and aviation. I even remember when I was very young going to a flying field and seeing barnstormers in their Jenny's offering rides at $5 for 3 minutes. It was just like WW1.I must have been all of 5 years old. I only bought my copy of the book after finding it at a used book sale. It is still one of my favorite book.
A WONDERFUL HISTORIC NOVEL OF AN AMERICAN FLYER IN FRANCE........1999-08-20
WHEN I WAS IN JR. HIGH SCHOOL IN HOUSTON IN 1964, THIS WAS THE FIRST NOVEL I EVER READ. IT LAUNCHED ME ON A LIFETIME OF READING AND A LOVE OF HISTORY. IT'S TREATMENT OF THE "HERO" ALLOWS ALL OF US TO RELATE TO HIM. HE IS JUST A PLAIN YOUNG MAN WITH AVERAGE ABILITIES, AND HAS AVERAGE SUCESS IN THE COCKPIT, OTHER THAN THE FACT THAT HE STAYS ALIVE.
THE BOOK TRACES THE EXPLOITS OF CHARLES SELDEN FROM THE TRENCHES THROUGH FLIGHT TRAINING, THE LAFFAYETTE ESCADRILLE, AND INTO THE U.S. ARMY FLYING CORPS WHERE HE IS SHOT DOWN AND CAPTURED. THE BOOK CLOSES WITH HIS ESCAPE AND RETURN.
THE REGULAR MEN AND WOMEN AND THE HEROS OF HISTORY ARE VIVIDLY PORTRAYED TO THE EXTENT THAT YOU SEEM TO KNOW THEM ALL AND MAKE FRIENDS WITH CHARLES SELDEN. IT'S 1999 NOW AND I HAVE ONLY AVERAGE MEMORY, BUT I'VE NEVER FORGOTTEN THIS SPECIAL BOOK EVEN THOUGH I'VE NOT READ IT SINCE 1964. IT'S THAT GOOD.
Great account of the WWI air war........1998-12-06
For anyone interested in the air war of WWI, I have to recommend "Falcons of France." A wonderful read from the first page on. All the drama of friends, combat, capture and escape are in it. And when your done with "Falcons of France," you must read "Fighting the Flying Circus" by Eddie Rickenbacker. The two books parallel each other until the mid point and then go off in two directions. I got a better understanding of "Fighting the Flying Circus" after reading "Falcons of France." I highly recomend "Falcons of France."
Relive the life of an 18 year-old fighter pilot over France.......1998-06-19
Falcons of France is a novel of flying, World War I, growing up, and the moralities of the time. Written by two American veterans of the Escadrille Layfayette (who later wrote Mutiny On The Bounty), both the action of battle and the routine of the aerodrome are immediately believable. I first read Falcons of France as a teenager, barely younger than the novels characters. Having reread it numerous times over the years since, the saga still facinates, still captivates, and still ends sooner than I would wish. Reading this novel is the closest any of us will ever come to being a young World War I fighter pilot struggling to stay alive in the skies over France.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth reading.......2006-11-15
I loved this book! I've read probably eight of Du Maurier's books, and though each of them is different, they all have the same effect of luring you into the story. I thought this one was just as good as the rest of her books. She has an amazing gift for telling a story, keeping all of her details straight (I'm an obsessive detail checker), and leaving a mystery ringing in the reader's mind long after the last page is finished.
Dreary, Dull, and Depressing.......2004-07-16
I looked forward to this book, as I loved "Rebecca" and "Jamaica Inn." Sorry to say, this was one of those books that I thought would never end. I kept hoping page after page that it would get better. I did not care for any of the characters, nor what they were doing. The plot was contrived and dull. If I ever write a book, I hope it holds my interest more than this one did!
Very good book.......2002-08-31
It's a pity the editorial opinion doesn't match the general positivity of the customer reviews! I personally felt this was a very GOOD story. Well laid out. I can't really tell about the story, because most of the thrill of reading Daphne du M's work is figuring it out as you go, piecing together the bits and coming out with a peculiar and always wonderful ending. She had to be the master of endings. Anyway, this is a good story. I got it from the library while I was working last year and took it along sometimes to read between breaks and at lunch and stuff. I loved the way that all along you felt as if the book was heading toward one thing... then that was suddenly resolved and it went in a somewhat different direction. I recommend it highly.
I met Armino Fabbio when I was in his head........2001-11-04
I've just finished reading the book for the second time. I've read it my own language first and now (4 years later) in english.
This is a book that forces you to read it. Once you've started, you can't wait to read what's on the next page. The book felt so real, I was in Armino's head: I saw through his eyes, heard through his ears and smelled through his nose. I felt myself chased by the police and I felt like never willing to let go of my brother again. Now that there's nothing left for me to read in the book, I still feel I'm inside it. Wondering about what's coming next, as Armino will be wondering now what to do. It will take a lifetime to forget everything that happened.
Good Story!.......2001-07-18
No. It's not Rebecca, but since Rebecca is considered one of the greatest books ever written, it would be hard for anyone to top it. I found The Flight of the Falcon a great story. It captures the feel of Italy as well as it holds you from page to page. I think any du Maurier is good reading. It isn't fair to compare everything she writes to Rebecca. It WAS a masterpiece, but her brilliance came through in almost every piece of her work. Flight of the Falcon has a lot of mystery and intrigue and deserves to be read by any suspense/mystery fan.
