It exposes the secret to investing: There is no secret. Instead this book gives you the common-sense approach to your retirement nearly all of us are going to need. The book points out the challenge we are going to face as fixed benefit pension plans have faded and Americans are living longer. The double-whammy puts most in a box that a "home run stock" cannot get you out of.

Follow the well-spoken Mr. Dow's plan and you will not only retire with the assets you need, you will have the experience of being a business owner (not a trader) with your risks spread over a portfolio of which you can be proud.

Outstanding, easy to read work by a seasoned veteran. The factual real life examples provided strongly supports the notion that making sound investments followed by patience is the key to financial reward. Absolutely "nukes" the day trading investment approach.

No Nonense, Time Tested Advice.......2004-01-14

No fancy slight of hand here. The authors use common sense wisdom to strip away and de-bunk the notion that constantly trading stock certificates will make you rich. In doing so they point to tangible examples of "average" investors who've made large sums by investing in solid companies and holding on while compounding works its magic.

A Personal Memoir of Universal Appeal.......2000-06-22

What makes a personal memoir interesting to a wide readership beyond one's immediate family? When it has a great story to tell, and that story is told not only with clarity but with honesty, compassion and wise insight into the human condition. Not only does "Take Your Brother By The Hand" meet these disciplines but gives as well a deeply felt experience which helps us better understand historic events of a century just ended.

Joachim Oppenheimer's account of his early boyhood in Germany, emigration to New York in flight from the Nazis with his parents when he was ten, US military service in the Pacific during World War II and a post-war festering hatred for the Germans strongly establishes his anxieties about a return to Germany in 1990. His story of that visit is a splendid sharing of transcendence over old wounds, triumph over bigotry and spiritual healing.

As a non-Jew, I value the book for giving me greater, deeper understanding of Jewish persecution under the Nazis and expanded knowledge of Jewish traditions, ritual and custom. This book is a chronologically-arranged series of biographies of important figures active in English history from 1485 to 1603. It's highly useful for students and for people with an interest in the period trying to find out quick but accurate information on someone they see mentioned elsewhere. It's not a great browsing book, but is an excellent reference resource. It's one of a series of books covering most of English and, later, British history. The only drawback is that its confinement to England means that some important players in Tudor history, such as the rebel Irish leaders of Elizabeth's reign, are omitted. However, it does include key Scots like Mary Stuart and Darnley.

Handy reference for newcomers to the period.......2003-06-12

As one can tell from the publisher?s descriptions and Booknews comments (above) this compilation of biographical sketches includes quite a broad range of ?characters? from Shakespeare?s England. It is a handy reference, especially to the newcomer to this period, to obtain *a little* more depth of knowledge into lives one may hear referenced while reading, say, Shakespeare studies. The best-targeted audience is the general lay public or undergraduates. English majors will soon become disappointed how the sketches selectively scratch the surface: the authors (editors, nearly) collect information from secondary/ tertiary sources, and sometimes round out entries with such information as who married whom how soon after their spouse?s death (i.e., occasionally higher on intrigue than substance). A dictionary of 700 entries obviously cannot explore the controversies of a life, but the Palmers at least strive to alert us to prominent issues therein.

Admirably, the secondary sources on which they draw are responsibly acknowledged at the end of each entry and favor highly appropriate selections such as E. K. Chambers, Eccles, Schoenbaum, McKerrow, and the Dictionary of National Biography. Some changes are said to have been made since the original (1981) edition, but for a book only striving for such global summaries of each life can probably safely be bought in the earlier edition if you wish to save by selecting a used copy.
