David Faber's The Faber Report is a scathing critique of the greed that permeates all levels of Wall Street, from analysts and investment bankers to money managers and brokers. Faber, who has been covering Wall Street for some 15 years--first as an editor and reporter at Institutional Investor and then, more famously, as a correspondent on CNBC--relates story after story about the conflict of interest that runs rampant between Wall Street and the companies it represents and the investing public. Organized into chapters such as "Why I Hate Analysts," "Why I Love Short Sellers," and "The Truth About Your Broker," the book mixes firsthand observations with advice to individual investors. For example, in the chapter on stock analysts, he advises investors to "Use mass upgrades and downgrades as a contrary indicator" and "Give less credence to positive calls, more credence to negative calls." While some readers may be put off by Faber's self-congratulatory tone, most individual investors would do well to consider Faber's main point about what really happens on Wall Street every day. This book should especially resonate with fans of CNBC's Squawk Box. --Harry C. Edwards

      Book Description

These days, when CNBCs David Faber talks, Wall Street listens. Unlike the talking heads that populate the financial news channels, Faber is a down-and-dirty investigative reporter. For six years, on CNBCs popular Squawk Box and in his own segments, Faber has broken story after story. Each day over one million people tune in to hear his daily report. Those who know the score know that Faber is the one to listen toespecially now that the market isnt doing as well as it used to. Now Faber has written the smartest, most innovative investment book to be published in years. Like Harvard Business Schools famous case study method, each chapter is built around a storythe story of how a stock was presented to the public. Then Faber extracts clear, easy-to-follow lessons and instructions on how readers can learn the stocks real story, just as he does everyday on CNBC. Readers learn not just how to pick the stocks they want to invest in, but how to avoid joining the penguins lining up for big losses. The Faber Report combines practical, down to earth investment advice with wild accounts of investor fraud, company misdeeds, and famous investors and banks that have led investors astray. A quantum leap beyond the usual investment books, The Faber Report is essential reading for anyone who wants to profitbulls or bears.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Decent read, but not worth $.......2003-05-20

Explaining how analyists work and their associated confilcts of interest is very interesting stuff. However, this book doesn't really offer advice to investors on how to invest intelligently. In the end, this is a decent book with some good info on how the street works, but its not worth $. I dont plan on re-reading this one in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Something For Everyone.......2002-09-13

Decades from now, when historians want to get a better understanding of what Wall Street was like at the turn of the 21st century, they won't need to look much further than The Faber Report. Faber's book paints an amazingly clear and comprehensive picture of today's investment climate, giving the reader gobs of insight into the inner workings of the Street.

The book has something for everyone; whether you're a novice investor trying to navigate the world of mutual funds or a hedge fund manager with a penchant for short selling, you'll find it eminently useful. (And if you happen to be the New York state attorney general looking for a blueprint to prosecute Jack Grubman and the rest of Wall Street, you'll find the book very worthwhile!) While the book covers investing basics with exceptional clarity (it has a paragraph on the P/E ratio that is one of the best I've seen), it also contains some headier material that more sophisticated investors will find helpful (his 12 point checklist for uncovering financial shenanigans is a keeper).

It's difficult to write a book that is both entertaining and instructive, but Faber has pulled it off in spades.

5 out of 5 stars The Brain's the best there is!.......2002-09-13

There's no one better in the world of financial reporting than David Faber. As a member of the media, I could only wish to be as connected, informed, and intelligent as he is. But most importantly, he's the best there is when it comes to sifting through the b.s. that has plagued Wall Street over recent years. This book is almost uncanny, in that it was written months before the dominant financial headlines that rocked the markets in the summer of 2002. We get the warnings about Worldcom, Imclone, and so on, well before anyone else does. Plus, he tells the reader where they can find raw data, what to look for, and the signs that a stock is trouble. Not really a "How to Invest" book, but rather, a "How to Be Informed" book. This book is a must-read. Faber tells it like it is. He was right in the 1990s when he warned on CNBC about the over valued Internet stocks, and time proved him right. By reading this book, you'll understand what to look for the next time Wall Street starts blowing a bubble.

3 out of 5 stars Good For Understanding Wall Street But Not for Making Money.......2002-08-19

David Faber is a good reporter in that he does not only repeat what information is given to him but injects some analysis and investigation into his stories. These capabilities are reflected in this book in explaining how the different hedge funds, brokers, mutual funds and bankers interact and affect the market. Although there is some fluff , all in all this book is interesting if only to satisfy your curiosity.
On the other hand, even though it gives you an understanding of wall street it offers no help on how to use that to profit. Considering that most individual investors are in the market to make money, this book leaves a gap to be filled. To that effect I found the book " Generate Thousands in cash on your stocks without selling them" recommended by another reviewer to be helpful in supplying specific strategies to recover losses on stocks in this market.

            Book Description

"Corporate responsibility" may seem oxymoronic in the present climate, but Mark Wysong believes it is crucial for both ultimate business success and protecting the health of people and the planet. In this timely book, the author introduces the concept of CSTCM (Compliance-Side Total Chemical Management), a web of surprisingly simple strategies to help companies more skillfully — and economically — manage their environmental toxins. The Non-Toxic CEO is an illustrated blueprint for responsible compliance for such companies.

                      • Keeping up appearances: “How is it possible that I haven’t had a drink in months, yet still look worse than I ever did hung over?”
                      • The effectiveness of baby monitors: “You can hear a baby screaming through walls. Unless you live in the Taj Mahal and place your baby at the other end of the palace, there is no way you won’t hear her cry.”

With the same dry wit as her hilarious chronicle Knocked Up: Confessions of a Hip Mother-to-be, Eckler sets the record straight on being a new mom: the highs, the lows, and the sheer bliss that comes when you’re dealing with the demands of someone who’s not very large but undeniably in charge.

                      Praise for Knocked Up

1 out of 5 stars The worst book I ever finished.......2007-08-12

The only reason I finished this book is because I kept waiting for it to get better. Steer clear of this one unless:
-You are too lazy/dumb to figure out how to use a diaper pail
-You own a Porsche and want everyone else to know about it
-You own two Bugaboo strollers and want everyone to know about it
-You refer to Grover as "the blue bear"
-You live in a two bedroom condo, A TWO BEDROOM CONDO (oh the horror)
-You have the ability to go to Hawaii for a few months and want everyone to know about it
-You get a nanny in Hawaii and you want everyone to know about it
-You only spend two hours a day with your child but are "wiped"
-You are too lazy to microwave the home made baby food that your nanny made, so you buy some instead
-You have a nanny and want everyone to know about it
-You are too lazy to baby-proof your own home so you "write a big check" to a "professional"
-You are so self-centered that you continue to take your child to restaurants despite misbehavior
-You enjoy books that have enough substance for 20 pages but are stretched out to 307

I could go on and on. The only props I give the author is for addressing her postpartum depression.

                      1 out of 5 stars Poor Baby...literally.......2007-07-13

Fortunately for me, I found this book at the library and therefore was spared from wasting $15 dollars on quite possibly one of the worst books I have ever read in my life. The author has obviously given no consideration to the fact that her child may one day read this book...or in-laws. If I were her child, reading this book would probably make me suicidal....or make me feel very unloved at best.

It's a good thing the baby in the book has a Nanny....at least there is somebody that can properly take care of her. I am not a mom, and have no desire to become a mom, so I thought I might learn a thing or two from this book that might potentially change my mind - what I have learned: the author is self-centered, curses WAY TOO MUCH, not very informed about mothering or in touch to what those of us without children really feel like, and she is excessively frivolous with her money (seriously - who just rents an apartment for two years that they aren't living in because they just can't "let it go"?!?!?! Who just goes and spends $850 dollars on a new stroller because one wheel broke - call the manufacturer, who buys four DVD players for their baby before the age of 2 - babies really aren't even supposed to be introduced to television until age 2!)

Basically, I have learned that Rebecca Eckler is quite possibly second in line to Miss Hilton (I think you know who I'm talking about); she is selfish, snobby, needy, ditsy, high maintenance and unable to take care of herself, let alone a child....that poor, poor, child....

Do yourselves a favor and don't read anymore than the back cover of this book.

                      4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and light-hearted read.......2007-06-29

As a new mother who sometimes needs a break from reading educational books on raising babies and children, I found this book entertaining and funny. Mothers can love their children but have a sense of humor at the same time. I think people are too quick to judge other mothers, especially those who experience postpartum depression and/or have trouble completely embracing motherhood from day one. If you are easy-going and just want a fun read, this is a good book.

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT waste your money!!.......2007-06-29

This book should have been funny. The perils of being a new mother, from the confusing plethora of "must-have" baby products to the endless sources of annoyance (yes inlaws, well meaning advice givers, sleeplessness, and often clueless husbands) are all fodder for hilarious anecdotes. However, all this book offers is the grating whining of a self-obsessed, spoilt, unfunny and sometimes scarily inept princess. This woman should not be allowed to write books let alone raise a child.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and interesting.......2007-06-25

I found this book entertaining and fun to read. While Rebecca Eckler is (gasp!!) honest about some of the negative aspects of motherhood, she also talks about how much she loves her baby, how she's careful crossing streets now and notices every car, how she rushes her baby to the ER when the baby had a mere cold, how she throws a first birthday party for her child and lavishes it with plenty of toys. HOW AWFUL!!! I think a lot of readers attack a mother who admits to having postpartum depression and feeling tired. I hope those readers are more sympathetic to their children. What if their children are tired or sick? Will those readers beat them and accuse them of being selfish?

If you enjoyed her last book, and you don't want to stone mothers who admit to feelings of inadequacy and tiredness, you will probably enjoy this one.

I also got a lot of practical advice from the book, such as when babies teethe, are ready for solid food, etc.

Barbara Bradlyn Morris has a talent for capturing moments of her life in snapshot stories. This collection is filled with nostalgia, a few tears and plenty of laughs. She explores memories of childhood, remembers being out late at night in a field of fireflies and tells stories of canoe trips.

I loved the stories about how her mother taught her family recipes and there is quite a poignant moment where you are almost stunned by one sentence. The warm comforting stories lead you through numerous life experiences filled with mishaps, surprises and awakenings.

The delightful stories of the Siamese cats are especially cute. Barbara Bradlyn Morris is a woman who has traveled the world and danced in her kitchen. She faces challenge and makes choices that guide her life in interesting and new directions. Memories of yard sales, Christmas trees, dieting and even a funeral in Japan are included in this collection. Through her eyes, we view the world with a little more humor. I think this book is Barbara Bradlyn Morris' best book yet!

5 out of 5 stars Laugh-out-loud essays for every woman.......2006-12-09

Women everywhere will glimpse themselves in this warm, funny book of memorable moments throughout the life of Barbara Bradlyn Morris. From capturing the essence of a reunion between two adult women whose lives have taken different paths, to resenting "Mrs. Clean," the neighbor with neat rows in her freezer, Morris has a knack for nailing life experiences with both humor and poignancy.

Morris's life has taken her across the world, but she weaves the threads of our common humanity wherever she goes and lets the reader experience the thrills, joys and sorrows in vivid prose. This is a woman who has seen the treacherous waters of Cape Horn, had her first anniversary dinner in a German schloss interrupted by the pathetic wails of her kitten, and pushed past her insecurities to engage in the ceremonial customs of a funeral in Japan.

"The Fattest Baby in the Bronx" makes for great bedtime reading and would be a perfect gift for any woman.

                          5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant.......2003-09-17

I was unsure of what to expect from this book. Most sports autobiographies are ghost written, but this book has no ghost writing credit and was actually Neil Back's own work.

The only other books of this nature I had to compare to "Size Doesn't Matter" is Mick Foley's pro wrestling autobiography "Have a Nice Day" and it's followup "Foley is Good." (Neither of these were ghost written either.. a fact he spends about 2 chapters discussing in his second book.) Other than that, I've never read a sports autobiography of any kind.

Now, Rugby and Pro Wrestling are sports that are miles apart. Some argue Pro Wrestling isn't a sport, but I won't even get into that here. Foley's two books are genius, no doubt. Neil Back is at that level as well.

The book starts out at his birth, as is most logical. For the first 2 or 3 chapters, he jumps between time periods quite quickly, and that is a bit disconcerting. He's talkign about when he was 5 and participating in his first Rugby match and then is suddenly talking about a British Lions tour, and is then back to when he was 5. This settles down quickly, though, and the temporal flow becomes much better.

You need to know a bit about Rugby to truly appreciate this book, as he doesn't explain many terms at all, and doesn't really explain the importance of positions. But it doesn't matter that much.. it makes it a little bit less confusing if you know the difference between a Flanker, Winger and Hooker, though.

He progresses through his life to right up after the disappointing British Lions tour of Australia in 2001. Well written the whole way. The only gripe I have is that Neil uses too much British jargon. He gives everyone nicknames.. Jonno, Lol, Robbo, Hilly, Catty, Backy (referring to himself), Deanno and so on. Honestly, by the end of the book, I had forgotten who "Deanno" was and had to go back thru the earlier parts of the book in an attempt to find out. He also makes references to british celebrities, which totally goes over my head... but I can't really dock him for that, as this book was more intended for a British audience, I think.

Overall, if you're a Rugby fan.. even if you don't like English Rugby.. this book is definately one to get.

I loved this book. It is very funny, and hard to put down. It reminded me a bit of Bridget Jones Diary. The ideas in the book about changing your life are well thought out can be applied to many areas besides just becoming more healthy. Her story is inspirational and definitely makes you feel as if she can do it so can you.

Funny, inspirational, and right on the money. AJ describes all of the things that go into losing weight. You don't have to be obese to want to lose a few kilos and her description of cravings and working out are something everyone can relate to. She breaks down losing weight into something that not only seems plausible but fun and energizing.

I laughed and laughed and then took her advice to the gym. Truly an inspiration.

'Confessions of a Reformed Dieter' isn't a book that only overweight women should consider reading. It is a book that anyone who has ever faced the excrutiating challenge of trying desperately to reach a personal goal, while fighting the self descructive part in us that holds us back, will find inspirational and touching. AJ Rochester documents her daily, even hourly, struggles to lose weight, and shed the demons of her childhood which are so inherently tied to her obsession with fat-filled, unhealthy food and over eating. Humorous, uplifting, and oh-so human, the real woman in the pages takes shape (a progressively thinner shape..) before our eyes as she takes charge of her life and her eating.
NOTE - Look up AJ on her website to see the AMAZING before and after pictures of her 8 size weighloss! Truly inspirational.
