Although written primarily for financial planning professionals, this book is very accessible for individuals seeking guidance for creating and managing personal wealth via trusts. Readers will learn how the development of mega-banks and baby-boomer wealth has changed the nature of trust management. The authors (principals of investment advisory firms) include many helpful questionnaires and decision trees that will help with the planning process, both for existing trusts and for those developing new trusts. Sophisticated readers may find the lack of thorough footnoting disappointing.

Good, not great, book.......2006-04-17

I thought the book was generally well written, although as one reviewer stated, felt as though I was back in undergraduate lecture halls through some. She raises some interesting and thought provoking questions, but it sometimes takes her awhile to make her point. It was an interesting book, and certainly made me evaluate where I stand on some issues.

Important Issues.......2000-07-07

A former medical researcher and now a historian of medical ethics, I take a position between the two that have been expressed to date. We absolutely must consider the consequences of any new technology, and Rothman explores the possible deeper implications of the human genome-- which has at this point been deciphered. At times, her writing smacks of revised undergraduate lectures with all their attendant hyperbole, but for the most part she presents crucial questions in a clear and readable manner. I would recommend this book to persons who want to think responsibly about genome issues, but with the caveat that they should also read other points of view.

Fear of Technology.......1999-11-05

Very negative book that exaggerates dangers of a new technology. To demonstrate her exaggeration, turn to page 14 where she states "Every possible area of basic research has been cut, and cut again, and cut yet again. But genetics gets funded." Between the books that exaggerate the negative and those which ignore the dangers exist more balanced books. One such book is Lois Wingerson's "Unnatural Selection: The Promise and Power of Human Gene Research." Lois correctly points out on page x that "There are exaggeration and misinformation at both ends of that spectrum--and a wealth of important detail in between, steadfastly overlooked by both sides." In my opinion, "Genetic Maps" represents the pessimistic end of that spectrum, and should be avoided.

This book helps us better understand the limits of genetic research and testing, and the dangers of believing that this magic new bullet will solve a host of social and medical "problems". For women especially, this book is must reading.

A better idea!.......2006-07-25

Steven Bragg is a totally insightful and unique accounting writer, and as usual, he provides a very interesting discussion with this text. For me, it both inspired me to seek to become a Controller - and at the same time, discouraged me from hoping to ever becoming one. He sets the bar very high! But if your current job title is Controller, you should probably buy this book, and get to work reading and implementing its recommendations immediately, even though you have practically no chance of incorporating even 20% of these suggestions.

The main reason for my low "3" rating on the book is the weird and VERY problematic extra small font-size TEXT, which the author hopefully had nothing to do with. It must have been a publisher/cost savings nightmare idea gone terribly wrong! It is microscopic.

In the wording of a Bragg "Best Practices" recommendations -
(too late to implement)

*A better idea might have been to publish the 230 page book at a FULL 330 PAGES and increase the print size from the tiny 4Pt. to an industry standard and reader friendly 10Pt. type.

Reading this with a magnfying glass in one hand, like Sherlock Holmes, is an awkward process. It's elementary my Dear Steven.

This is one of those books that glosses over everything glibly and reiterates everything that you already know in a cursory and superficial manner. If, however, you don't already know anything, this book would make a nice easy introduction and overview.

I first took this book out at the library and decided that it was so helpful that I needed to purchase it. It provides many questionnaires to help you determine what kind of house purchase is best for you (ex. new construction, fixer upper, etc.)as well as what kind of house is best for your tastes and lifestyle (ex.ranch,contemporary, split level, etc.). It's an excellent resource for first time homebuyers who may not be exactly sure what they are looking for in a home. However,I would not recommend this book to anyone who won't take the time to complete the questionnaires.

Not a book for beginners..........2007-04-04

My suggestion is to read The Complete Idiot's Guide to Buying and Selling a Home, or a comparable beginners book, before reading this one.
You need to know the basic home buying process and terminology first. The greatest value of the Kiplinger book is on the elaborate discussion on financial and tax issues related to buying and selling a home.
The book is divided into two major sections, each starting with those two issues (why buy/sell, tax repercussions), before discussing the buying/selling process.
I found the discussion on tax benefits of home ownership, tax breaks on mortgage interests, and tax laws that allow tax-free profits from selling your primary residence, very informative. It has many sample forms used in the home buying/selling process. You might find the details overwhelming, but that's because there's so much great info which is not covered in Idiot/Dummy books.

We found a By Owner property we wanted so we needed help in representing ourselves instead of having a realtor do it. The book had good advice for general buyers but was lacking some advice in things to watch out for to avoid being taken advantage of by the sellers--and especially, it had very little on buying a "by owner" home. It had much more however on selling by owner. It was great book for the perspectives also of a first time buyer and had lots of tax information if thats what youre seeking. I would buy it again but its not suitable as an only for FSBO transactions.

A must for 1st time home buyer to understand the process.......2000-03-16

We are trying to decide whether or not to buy or first home (since we may or may not move away in a year). This book took me through the process step by step, including tax benefits. I even took the information from the book, entered it into last years Turbo Tax file to see how this years return would have been different. I've heard so much about how a home is a tax shelter, but now I see the numbers of how and why. The explanation cleared the muddle of the different types of loans and many other things to think about.

I found many helpful suggestions but more importantly, it helped me to understand the process of buying another home even better so that we won't make the same mistakes we made when buying our first home. I understand the details of mortgages much better now and am shopping around for one that is best suited to our needs. For help with selling a home, I found Terry Eilers' How to Sell Your Home Fast and Mary Donnelly Pilgrim's It's Showtime to be most comprehensive.

Chip on His Shoulder, But Interesting.......2007-01-29

Having grown up in the AOG denomination, and having witnessed much of the corruption of the 70's and 80's, I could believe most of what the author details. It has a gossipy feel...rather "National Enquirer" for the pentecostal set. It kept my interest, although I could have done without the gratuitous description of his first intimate encounter with the woman who would become his wife. The tone is self-pitying, but perhaps he had reason to feel poorly-used by the powers-that-were at the time.

How Bizarre? REALLY!.......2006-04-20

How bizarre (and unbelievable) is this: "Gathered together at that retreat center was a group called Camps Farthest Out (CFO). . . baptism was conducted in this group. A gourd of water with a hose attached was hung from a tree limb . . . the other end of the hose was inserted in the rectum of the person being baptized . . ." (p.238, DCMB, 1989)

I laughed out loud at that nonsense. Brothers and Sisters, we will have a baptism today at the old oak!

He had me going until THAT. Now, although I accept some of what he says, I wonder, Does this man have a problem? A deep problem?

Interesting, but..........2003-10-19

...parts of this are hard to believe. Mr. Miles became a circus ringmaster on the way to his dream of Hollywood stardom, and got entangled in the late-80s web of evangelical Christian corruption. That part of his book, and the surrounding stories, are (relatively) believeable. What isn't is the connections to the Kennedy assasination, Marilyn Monroe's death/murder/suicide, and the Jim Jones religious cult mass suicide in Guyana in 1977. Otherwise, those with an appetite for this kind of stuff will, as Austin Miles himself puts it late in this book (quote approximate), "[you] will read this book, cover to cover, because it [has] lots and lots of juicy gossip and that will certainly appeal to the likes of you!"

Whether it will appeal to the likes of anyone unfamiliar with the PTL scandal--now more than a decade removed--is difficult to say at best.

The blame game?.......2003-03-23

First published at the height of the televangelism scandals of the late 1980's, "Don't Call Me Brother" recounts the story of a boy who ran away to join the circus, became a well-known ringmaster, found Jesus after a miraculous healing of an audience member that occurred after Miles asked for silent prayer for the man, and later became a fixture on the PTL Club. Much of the material here will not be shocking to anyone who followed PTL scandal (and who didn't?), but the slander, hatred, and hypocrisy shown by rank-and-file ministers of the Gospel was quite surprising, at least to me. Also surprising is the contention by Miles that homosexuality and adultery run rampant in the Assemblies of God denomination. I can't help but think he's overstating this just a little. But, there's more to the story than what is emphasized.

Miles is somewhat mysterious early in the book about his first marriage. It almost seems like his daughter just arrives on the scene with scant explanation. As the story unfolds, it seems that his first wife was responsible for getting him caught up in a conspiracy concerning the Kennedy presidency and Marilyn Monroe. Thus, Miles has to go through a name change from Al Maddox, his previous stage name, to Austin Miles. Toward the end of the book, we learn that the FBI has been harrassing acquaintances of Miles, paying them off (or not paying them off, in the case of the good church folks) to come up with dirt on him to destroy his reputation. Therefore, the FBI seems to be as much or more to blame than the church. The hostility he received from the church could have simply come from fear of the FBI. But then, this is a book attacking the church, not the FBI. Miles will probably never write that book.

His second marriage to the love of his life, a Swiss heiress, is threatened by his religious conversion and subsequent departure from his life as a ringmaster to constantly be on the road to speak at churches and religious functions. Once again, it seems the church is to blame for destroying his family. However, if he'd have handled things with a little more wisdom, he could have had Jesus and his family, too. Could it be that he was at least a little bit to blame for the situation?

Interestingly, he still cannot bring himself to explain away the healings and miracles that were part of his ministry. If what a previous reviewer said is true, that Austin Miles has returned to the ministry, then it's probably the undeniable power of God that he experienced firsthand that kept him connected. Hopefully, there are some needed reconciliations that have taken place since this book was written. With all that said, this is a book that is hard to put down once you've started, and is a worthwhile read if the reader keeps things in perspective.

The author is not a particularly loveable guy. After all he was one among the traveling preachers whom he exposes here. However you probably will feel for him as his life and family fall apart. His stories of the evangelists who travel from church to church rang true to me. My childhood church was involved with the things Miles talks about and he even mentions my former church's pastor by name. (See Angels on Assignment.) I have a childhood memory of a one eyed traveling preacher coming to preach at our church. After having someone blindfold his good eye he proceeded to `read' people's names off their driver's licenses. Once the congregation was all worked up by this `miracle' they passed the collection plate. (If you're wondering how he may have managed this trick of reading with an empty eye socket read James Randi's book The Faith Healers.) Read this book for an eye opening peek behind the scenes of Pentecostalism, televangelism, and the Assembly of God church. If you or someone you care about is involved with this movement I especially urge you to read this book. The connection to Jim Jones (remember poison kool-aid?) was a shock to me.

Music came to Willie ruff early in his Alabama boyhood. It came from Mrs. Nance, the solo bass drummer of the Sanctified church, whose beat "gave her right arm the churning motion of a set of steam locomotive wheels." It came from singing at the grocery store for candy, and from the "chitlin struts: at his home, with young Willie sprinkling cornmeal on the floor to make "gliding" easy for dancing. It came from eavesdropping on the porch ladies, listening to the rhythm of their revelations. It came from the Sheffield School for Colored the day the second grader met a storied Alabama neighbor, W.C. Handy, who played his St. Louis Blues on the trumpet and spoke to the children about "the music of the Negro race."

Music and learning ("Can't nobody take nothin from outta your head," said his first mentor, Daddy Long) set the course of Willie Ruff's life. He sopped up music and learning when he joined the army at age fourteen, coming under the influence of various fatherly music masters. While he was an undergraduate at Yale, it was Paul Hindemith's magnetic presence that expanded Willie's musical horizons. Later, playing the French horn with the Lionel Hampton band and forming the "Duo" with his old piano-playing army sidekick, Dwike Mitchell, Willie learned firsthand from powerful influence like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie. And through his years at Yale as a professor of music, the quest for learning never stopped.

But music wasn't all. A powerfully recurring theme of A Call to Assembly comes from Willie's curiosity about the black soldier in American history. It began when he was in grade school and witnessed an air show by an all-black squadron of fighter pilots from Tuskegee. Later, in the army, Willie met some of those pilots who had fought over Germany and Italy and risked courts-martial to gain the same rights white officers enjoyed. Years later, through a set of extraordinary circumstances, he came across a statement written in 1902 by another Alabama neighbor, an ex-Confederate general who commended the valor of Negro soldiers fighting in the Spanish-American War. It was, Willie writes, as if this general "laid a hand on me from the grave and gave me pride and understanding."

Young girl in Holocaust.......2003-02-11

A moving and informational account of a young Latvian girl during WWII. Her memories of the Holocaust are alive with detail, and her courage and spirit are inspiring. Highly reccommend.

ToGorgive...but Not Forget: Maja's Story.......2002-09-01

I absolutely recommend this book. i read it in one day and could not put it down. Maja writes so honestly, elegantly and so beautifully. she's keeps it simple and straight forward. i recommend this book to anyone of any age. i am so proud that she had the courage and strength to write about her experiences because it is imperative that we do not forget about the atrocities of the Holocaust. it took a lot of will-power and she has surely made her family and friends proud.
we are so proud of you granny.
