Dated and disappointing.......2001-02-13

This book promises to teach you how to "Globalize your business with digital and online technology". Unfortunately the book was first published in 1998, so the information is at least four years old. Furthermore, the author is much too pedantic for my tastes. (He begins chapter 1 : "In the eigth century B.C., when Homer wrote the The Odyssey ...).

If you are interested in expanding to international markets via the Internet, this book is unlikely to help.

I was looking for a book that would help me understand what I needed to both consider and execute in order to sell internationally on the internet.

The book helps somewhat with what to consider - having some good rankings of countries and their relative abilities to accept/use the internet and internet based purchasing. However, the book doesn't really tell me how to sell; fulfill orders, manage exports/imports at the nitty-gritty level that I need.

I know there are many anecdotal accounts of the buying habits of individuals in different countries that might help me avoid some pitfalls in marketing to them. I found very few of those in this text.

The text is at a very high level. It provides a framework for thinking about marketing globally. However, aside from the country rankings, I found the actual content to be somewhat superficial.

Another book that takes a more nuts and bolts approach is "How to build a Successful International Web Site" by ! Mark Bishop. However, that is at a very rudimentary level as well. Another text designed to help you sell on the internet is "Selling on the Internet" by Gonyea and Gonyea. This has a helpful "Storefront Planning Worksheet" that helps organize the development.

I still have not seen an overwhelmingly impressive book on the subject. Most texts just help you get foot on the first rung of a ladder but you still have to climb the rest of the way yourself.

Might be so basic it's not worth your time.......2000-01-20

If you're looking for solid guidance as an executer or fiduciary, go elsewhere. "How to Settle and Estate" is the better choice. The handbook gives a scant 7 pages of practical advice on what to do if/when someone close has died. Things like: Contact the funeral director, determine your parent's wishes concerning the funeral, ascertain whether your parents have already paid for their funeral, notify friends, locate the original copy of the will - - you get the idea. I was very disappointed especially given the glowing reviews provided by others.

Rare find........1999-03-08

Most books on estates and trusts are simply clueless in dealing with anything except for numbers and laws, as seen from the perspective of someone setting up a trust.

This book views the subject as a set of human issues, from the perspective of a trust beneficiary.

Though there are no other books on this subject matter to compare this one with, I thought that it did the job well.

Good presentation of "Plus's & Negatives" of alternatives.......1999-01-28

This book is very well written and organized without being "over legal." My recently deceased Father, who was an attorney speciallizing in Estate Law, always down-played Trusts (although he set one up for himself.) From this writing, I now see why they are not for everyone. I plan to purchase a copy for each of my siblings, as our Mother ages, to keep us on the same "wavelength."

A very good book!.......1999-01-06

As a potential beneficiary, I found this to be a very helpful and very readable primer on estate planning, the legal issues, and the emotional fallout that can occur as a result of inheritances. The advice given is all good. The appendices and lists of other contacts are very good. I was disappointed, however, that the author did not include any discussion on: the importance of titling of assets to aid in the estate planning; and how election of beneficiaries for insurance policies, retirement accounts, trusts, and financial accounts can affect the estate plan.

An excellent book for all people who may inheret someday........1998-12-29

This book is well-written and is split into sections for persons who may inheret, persons who's loved ones have died, and persons who have already inhereted. It discusses how to approach parents to determine what plans they have made, and what to do if they do not want to discuss their plans. It explains what a person should do in setting up "his" own estate, and discussing it with children. It lists a large number of resources (support groups, financial, philanthropic, and psychological advisors, and extensive printed materials). If you plan to leave money to anyone, or any entity, this is a good book to read.

useful, but badly incomplete.......2002-12-07

This book has a lot of useful background information on how businesses, non-governmental organizations, and inter-governmental organizations are attempting to deal with the problems of human rights. The interaction of these groups, which is one of my specialties as a business writer, is extremely complex. What is the problem? What should be done? Realistically, what can be done? These are the questions I wrestle with and that I sought to have answered in this book.

Unfortunately, I did not find them covered very well and far too many issues receive only a partial treatment. For starters, Schoenberger does not really define the problem with clarity or consistency. At one point, he goes into the universal declaration of human rights and then into a long chapter on China and whether companies should pull out to protest the repressive regime. There is also a long chapter with a vague political history of Burma that goes into far too much detail to make his point that MNCs, in pulling out, had an impact. But China is too big for any one company to affect much, and too important as a potential market as well, so that is not a realistic or even meaningful option in my opinion - a mosquito can't attack an elephant. At another point, it seems to be the working conditions in factories that concern the author. As such, the book kind of flails around from issue to issue without very clear criteria as to what he is looking for and what would be a good outcome.

Then, there is Schoenberger's choice of Levi-Strauss as the anchor for his story. Now that is an interesting company - it really tried to implement practical ethical practices and/or codes throughout its long history - but I wonder if it was the right choice. While Schoenberger used it to illustrate that there may be unreconcilable contradictions between the demands of profit-making and behaving ethically, I am not at all sure that Levi-Strauss is really at the cutting edge of the implementation of global corporate codes. There are other companies, such as adidas-Salomon AG, which are addressing precisely the questions that Schoenberger sees as problems at Levi's: namely, transparency, credibility, and the balance between using human rights as a crude marketing ploy and really trying to have a positive impact. I witnessed how adidas was, in my opinion, successfully dealing with these questions: that company produced reports that were honest about what areas needed improvement and hence were not a simple PR whitewash. That represents real progress and something new, at least to me, and Schoenberger did not seem to have any inkling of these things, which were under development while he was writing this book.

Moreover, Schoenberger did not successfully get inside Levi's in any deep way, so he has written as an outsider who lacks direct and intimate access to the top thinkers there. That means that, in spite of the legitimate distance that reporters need to maintain from their subjects, many of his conclusions are far more speculative than he lets on. For a reporter, he did far too little reporting.

It was very interesting to me to read on things that I myself investigated here. There is a chapter on Sialkot, Pakistan, which I visited to investigate an initiative to eliminate children from soccer ball manufacturing. Well, Schoenberger covers it very very poorly and fails to ask the right questions: for him, child labor is simply bad but it is hard to get rid of. What I saw was that it was an economic necessity to some families for kids to work - and they wanted to - and the introduction of the program, which was a good one and sincerely well intended, had many side affects that were unforeseen, such as eliminating many women from the work force (due to local custom, they had to work in their homes and hence couldn't travel to the regulated centers in outside towns that the initiative established) and the rise of a new black market that paid less well than it had before because middlemen claimed they took on extra risk. Yet Schoenberger reports on none of these ambiguities, preferring to fault the program's design for poor monitoring of the results. That, in my opinion, is bad reporting and it made me suspect everything else he wrote.

The author is quite hard on NGOs, such as the Clean Clothes Campaign and its shoddy methods, and yet seems to be arguing that they are necessary, if weaker, counter-weights to MNCs. This is a difficult area and far more needs to be written about it. As I see it, corporations need to work with them constructively or they risk becoming pawns in a much larger game, as did Nike which is a favorite "whipping boy" of the NGOs. Schoenberger also fails to cover the media's role adequately, as fashions come and go very quickly and corporations can be attacked ruthlessly regarding conditions that they were not responsible for creating, though may have been abetting indirectly.

Futhermore, the author's writing style bothered me. He often employed this kind of over-heated rhetoric - too many adjectives! - that got in the way of the content. This is a matter of taste, of course, but it is not elegant or cooly written.

For me, the usefulness of the book is that it filled a number of gaps in my knowledge and many readers, both generalists and specialists, would benefit from learning about those. But the treatment is flawed and incomplete, in particular regarding what corporations are actively doing to address the problems he raises.

Recommended with caution.

Insightful on Human Rights.......2000-09-30

This book is a must read for anyone interested in the issue of human rights. It offers a compelling tale of one company's struggle to do the right thing while still remaining globally competitive. This is an issue that will only grow more important with time. Capitalism may be an efficient mechanism for shareholders in American but it may not necessarily be the answer for the developing world.

Human Rights Activists - Read this book!.......2000-06-18

This book is extremely timely in light of efforts in recent years to sue American companies in Federal Court for complicity in HR violations in developing countries; case in point is the effort to sue Shell for its activities in Nigeria under the Alien Tort Claims Act. It seems that profit becomes a talisman allowing companies to ignore their role in perpetuating Human Rights. An important book.

Homer Breaks It Down.......2003-10-18

Professor Homer breaks down many of Primo Levi's works and makes it quite simple to understand each work's significance to Primo Levi's views on survival in "real-life". Definitely the proper choice for anybody interested in previewing or reviewing Primo Levi's work; however, also significant for those looking for more insight into their already well developed understanding of Levi.

Non-emotional.......2007-07-07

A monotone, sort of scientific voice. His story is sad...but is told with very little emotion. It was hard to get into - a little harder to read due to the "scientist' type voice that I'm not used to. I found Elie Weisel's "Night" to be a much more candid look inside a survivor's haunted soul. Primo Levi is good for someone who prefers reading something about the Holocaust that is a bit more textbook vs. memoir.

A clinical memoir of the Holocaust -- and that's good.......2007-06-03

A touching, but not mawkish or dramatic, memoir. One realizes the randomness and happenstance by which he survived, and easily accepts the moral dualism of the life of thievery and connivance, within bounds of common decency and collective group self-interest, that kept any survivor alive. Some reviews seemed to fault the book for being unemotional, but one sees how Levi's essentially scientific and objective personality became a key to his survival, and necessarily informs his voice.

The meaning of being 'human'.......2007-01-16

This account of the imprisonment, internment, survival of Primo Levi in Auschwitz is written as a straightforward chronological narrative. Levi recounts his initial capture , the horrendous suffering of the journey of Italian Jews to Auschwitz, the selection there in which all the woman and children were immediately sent to their deaths in the gas- chambers, and in which the able- bodied sent to the work- camp at Buna. Levi tells the story , detail by detail of his getting into the work- order of the Camp. He describes in clear precise language the horrible humiliations the prisoners were subject to. He also describes in one central chapter, four different kinds of survivors, and the strategies they use to escape death. His accounts of his own getting through to the liberation include his appreciations of his friend Albert, and a few other individuals who with no reward to expect for it, helped him on the way.
The bestiality of the Nazis and their helpers is not sermonized about, but rather portrayed in specific incidents of unusual terrible cruelty.
Levi is deeply concerned with the whole question of what it means to be human , and how it is possible to retain human dignity in the most extreme circumstances.
His carefully written record of his own horrifying experience is to this day considered one of the most moving and effective of Holocaust memoirs.

Book Review for Survival in Auschwitz.......2007-01-13

The book Survival in Auschwitz is by Primo Levi. It is about a twenty-five year old chemist named Primo Levi, who is an Italian citizen of the Jewish race. He was captured by Italian Fascists in 1943 and was transported to a concentration camp in Auschwitz where he spent 10 months known as Haftling 174517. At the concentration camps they were authorized to build a Buna- a rubber processing plant. Those who were unable to work were immediately killed. Those who worked in the "Lagers" had a better chance of living because the Germans decided that the Jews in the lagers would be more of use alive than dead. Levi who works in the lager talks about how some people would trade possessions such as clothing, spoons, bowls, shoes etc. for rations of bread or food in the lagers. Those who got injured in work in the lagers were sent to Ka-Be. Ka-Be is the abbreviation of Krankenbau, which is a temporary infirmary. Those who seem to get better at Ka-Be were sent back to work and those who seem to get worse are sent from Ka-Be to the gas chambers. Later on in this book Levi and two other chemists were authorized to work in the labs. This job had some benefits. They were given a new shirt and were to work indoors, rather than out in the winter weather, and this job wasn't strenuous.

This is a book about survival. I dint like this book too much. I found this book hard to understand at some points and most of the German words are hard to pronounce. I would recommend this book to people who have interest in World War 2 or the Holocaust.

Great book on the Holocaust.......2006-12-19

Ever since I first studied the Holocaust in the eighth grade, I love reading and listening to the stories of the people who were in the Holocaust. This is the first Holocaust book that I read. I first read this book when I was in high school. This is one of my favorite Holocaust books.
