How 'business friendly' can business ethics be?.......2003-03-14
I would also like to add that the dedication of the book to the victims of 9-11 'because they were members of the business community' is in poor taste, because many of the victims were not business persons, and because the authors (absurdly) make the victims sound like martyrs for capitalism. It sounds like an opportunistic attempt to recruit the dead for the libertarian world-view. Perhaps the dedication is good for the business of selling the book, but that only shows that what is good for business is not necessarily good, period.

Help Wanted: Effective Leaders.......2004-05-01
As readers of this newsletter no doubt already know, nonprofits no longer have the luxury of being supplementary. As governments face budget cutbacks and nonprofits expand both in number and in reach, their impact on society is becoming more and more significant. Nonprofits are becoming equal partners with both government and the private commercial sector in helping to solve society's most pressing issues. They are no longer home to mere charity work, but are now increasingly more responsible for providing society with essential services. As society depends more and more on the nonprofit sector, it becomes increasingly important for nonprofits to be effective and properly run. This requires strong leadership.
In "Improving Leadership in Nonprofit Organizations", editors Ronald E. Riggio and Sarah Smith Orr assemble an impressive collection of articles by prominent academics, nonprofit professionals, and experts on leadership. The book is the product of a two-day event, the twelfth annual Kravis-de Roulet Leadership Conference, held in 2002 at Claremont McKenna College. The conference brought together leadership scholars, experts in nonprofit issues, and practitioners and leaders of nonprofit organizations to discuss and explore various issues associated with nonprofit leadership.
A great leader can mean the difference between a successful nonprofit organization with enormous social impact and one that may have an important mission but ultimately fails. There are many important issues that today's nonprofits must consider, from mission articulation to program assessment to infrastructure capacity building. However, the development of effective leadership should not be overlooked because the right leadership is crucial to any other nonprofit endeavor.
As this book proves, effective leadership is just as important in the nonprofit sector as it is in the corporate and governmental sectors. Nonprofit organizations are facing significant challenges. As Frances Hesselbein puts it, "The greatest challenge of this nonprofit century is to provide the leadership, the competence, and the management that will determine the quality and the performance of the twenty-first-century society. This is the big picture of our work and our challenge today and the significance of the social sector organization."
"Improving Leadership in Nonprofit Organizations" is not meant to be a step-by-step manual or handbook for leaders. Rather, it serves as a guidebook to help the reader explore a wide range of issues facing the nonprofit sector. Since the book is a collaboration of many different contributors, it does not have to be read chronologically from cover to cover. Instead, the reader can determine which chapters and articles are most relevant for them. The book covers a variety of topics, from board leadership development to increasing the organizational capacity of organizations. With a mixture of theory and real-world examples, this book should be a useful tool for people in all segments of the nonprofit sector - heads of organizations, board members, volunteers, and scholars.
As the book makes clear, society must take seriously the importance of capable leadership for nonprofits. Just as effective leadership is fundamental in the corporate and political worlds, the nonprofit sector needs to increase its capacity to recruit, develop and support leaders who are able to combine practical management expertise, passion for a cause, and a coherent vision for their organization.

Team-Based Fundraising Step-by Step: A Practical Guide to Improving Results Through Teamwork
Mim Carlson , and Cheryl Clarke Manufacturer: Jossey-Bass ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0787943673 |
Book Description
"Although nonprofits have adopted a team approach in program delivery and even management, many nonprofits have not used this same successful approach in fundraising. This friendly guide argues for creating a fundraising team that involves board members, executive staff, line staff, and volunteers and gives examples of how such teams can operate effectively. Along the way, the author makes fundraising seem less mysterious and intimidating, and lead the reader to feel confident and enthusiastic about creating a successful fundraising team--no small achievement."--Jan Masaoka, executive director, CompassPoint ServicesMany nonprofits rely on a lone staff member or volunteer to raise the money they need to sustain or grow their programs. In this insightful resource, leading fundraiser Mim Carlson presents a practical approach to involving the entire organization in fundraising. In doing so, she helps board members, executive directors, and development directors turn their staff and volunteers into a cohesive team with clearly defined goals, specific roles, joint accountability, diverse talents and skills, and strong leadership.
In Team-Based Fundraising Step by Step, Carlson draws on popular team-building theory and successful techniques--as well as on her years of fundraising experience--to offer a fresh framework for helping teams become more unified in their fund development activities. She argues that individuals who act alone cannot make the most of fundraising strategies and instead advises readers to include the board of directors, the executive director, staff, and other volunteers in strategic planning and development.
At last, nonprofit managers, board members, development professionals, and fundraisers at all levels of experience have a dynamic guide to making the most of fundraising opportunities through effective collaboration.

Circle With Stone: Exeter's City Walls, 1485-1660
Mark Stoyle Manufacturer: University of Exeter Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0859897273 |
Book Description
Circled with Stone is the most comprehensive study to date of the fortifications of an early modern English city. The culmination of some twenty years of archaeological and documentary research, it provides a richly detailed portrait of the ancient system of walls, towers and gates which ringed the city of Exeter during the Tudor and early Stuart periods. The book traces the development of the fortifications over time, explores the many purposes which they served, and shows how they were defended against a series of major attacks: most notably during the Prayer Book rebellion of 1549 and the English Civil War. The text is accompanied by a series of extensive transcripts from Exeter's matchless civic archives, inlcuding two newly-discovered documents relating to the Prayer Book rebellion. The book includes a wealth of illustrations and brings together, for the very first time, colour reproductions of all the early maps of Exeter, as well as a series of specially commissioned photographs of the city walls today. Designed to be accessible to the general reader, as well as to the specialist, Circled with Stone paints a uniquely vivid picture of the role which urban fortifications played in everyday life in one of early modern England's greatest cities.
