b /b b i The Spirit of the Soil /i /b challenges environmentalists to think more deeply about the ethical dimensions of agriculture's impact on the environment. Paul B. Thompson considers environmental problems in industrial agriculture such as the use of chemical pesticides and biotechnology. He compares the four "worldviews" which frame these issues-- productionism, economics, stewardship and holism--and examines potential responses to them according to different philosophical priorities. br br Thompson concludes his analysis with an open-ended and necessarily incomplete formulation of sustainability as the key goal for recapturing the spirit of the soil. He discusses the work of Baird Callicott, Wendell Berry, Wes Jackson and Allan Savory, and reviews the potential of conventional environmental ethics and resource economics.

The educated layperson will find Dr. Thompson's *Spirit of the Soil* to be a perfect introduction to the bewilderingly complex ethical and economic questions that increasingly surround modern agriculture. The author ruthlessly dissects politically charged and often intentionally vague terms and concepts such as "sustainability," "stewardship," the consumer mentality, and the flawed yet indispensible materialism of modern production agriculture. This book will be enormously helpful to anyone who wants to attack farm policy with a more mature understanding of the ethical issues upon which the cultural and physical sustainability of modern agriculture depends

Authors discuss the importance of these professionals accepting and asserting leadership roles in the complex gift planning process, thereby educating advisors in the process. They emphasize that the planned giving professional must expand from estate planning to "life and legacy planning" and become well versed in both technical information and skills needed to maximize the donor's interest as well as be able to build healthy relationships with donors and potential donors. The proposed IRS regulations on required minimum distributions are thoroughly discussed as well as the special challenges involved in retirement benefits. For individuals planning major charitable gifts, this issue helps define which assets can produce substantial tax savings. Authors also examine the beneficial role of consultants. as well as present an overview of where future planned giving professionals will come from and what skills they will need in order to succeed.

Having just returned from France after World War I with a medal of honor and serious shell shock, Inspector Ian Rutledge struggles to settle back into his duties at Scotland Yard. When, despite his tenuous condition, an envious supervisor assigns him to a traumatic case involving the murder of an army colonel and a young captain as the prime suspect, Rutledge must gather all of his strength to not only solve the case, but fight the town people's prejudice against military personnel. To make matters worse, the prime witness is another veteran--on the brink of insanity--scorned by the villagers for what they perceive to have been less than honorable conduct during his tour of duty.

MysteryLarge Print EditionA newcomer returns us to the essential pleasures of the well-crafted puzzle in this debut. starred, Publishers WeeklyIn 1914, Ian Rutledge left a brilliant career at Scotland Yard to fight in the Great War. Now, in 1919, hes back but hes burdened by a heavy secret: hes suffering tremendously from shell shock. With him almost constantly is the taunting voice of a young Scots soldier he was forced to have executed on the battlefield for refusing to fight. As Rutledge struggles to unravel the clues in a murder case involving a retired military officer, he also grapples with the tormentor in his head. A Test of Wills is an extraordinary novel that combines psychological suspense with vivid atmosphere and a tantalizing mystery.

4 out of 5 stars Passed the test!.......2007-01-28

All I need to get me thru airports and business travel is a comfortable paperback, preferably a mystery. This one did the trick! It was not the heavy tome of a P. D. James or Elizabeth George, all of whom I have read, but it did elicit the English dynamic as does Deborah Crombie. Two American writers who give us a fairly short procedural to figure out.

I must admit the solution to this mystery came out of the blue; perhaps I am critical because I just never figured out who it would be - in other words I didnt have a clue!!!! :D

Hamish as a sidekick (conscience) is a different ploy. But I liked Inspector Ian Rutledge and I hope he grows as I continue to read this series. Picked up Charles Todd on these review boards - am so glad I did.
I never even suspected the killer; a plus for me even tho it was a bruise to my ego!!!!

1 out of 5 stars sloppy plot ruins a decent premise.......2007-01-11

I have always relied heavily on the recommendations of other readers here at amazon.com, but this book shows me that I must be more careful in the future. Apparently I expect considerably more from mysteries than other reviewers here.

I had high hopes at the outset but very soon the book devolved into a messy muddle with far too many loose ends that were never tied up. I expect that if a question is introduced, it will at some time be answered; either answers were never given or the answers were so implausible, I lost faith in the author and had lost interest in the outcome of the story. Rutledge should be a compelling and fascinating character but instead falls flat for me. Hamish is nothing more than a substitute for a sidekick with a quaint accent. Most of the characters are cardboard cut-outs and all the female characters are indistinguishable and interchangeable. Contrary to what the other reviewers report, I found the background info about the war and the time period to be superficial at best.

My advice? Read Pat Barker for a masterful handling of the period, situations, and people. Read Agatha Christie for airtight plotting and Dorothy Sayers for delightful writing.

I find the fact that so many readers and reviewers rave about Charles Todd's books disturbing. I suspect the publisher's marketing jockey decided this book fit the right profile for some target audience and painted it with such praise as to fool us into mistaking it for good writing. I won't be fooled again.

              2 out of 5 stars A Test of Patience.......2007-01-11

By the time the killer was revealed in "A Test of Wills," Charles Todd's debut mystery with shell-shocked Inspector Ian Rutledge in charge, I had pretty much stopped caring "whodunit." The identity is indeed a suprise, and a good one at that, but I found getting there an extremely hard slog. Perhaps it's the polite Edwardian sensibility of the characters, perhaps Todd just isn't that skilled a writer; but the pace is glacial, and the presence of Hamish MacLeod, the ghost in Rutledge's head, while initially a unique plot device, for me quickly became a tiresome intrusion. And Todd doesn't quite, psychologically speaking, blow the lid off of British repression as much as he and his publicity machine would have us believe. More people than not have flipped over this mystery series, however, so you might give it a shot. But it's far from the taut, crackling good yarns of a Ruth Rendell or a P.D. James. I'd even reread an old Agatha Christie before continuing with the Rutledge mysteries.

3 out of 5 stars Fair cozy mystery.......2006-12-18

WWI, demons still haunting, and then a typical unremarkable English mystery. I did not unfortunately find this to be the outstanding mystery the reviewers did. I'm afraid I can't quite fathom how it was named one of this century's 100 favorite mysteries. Well-written, but overall not too compelling, and the revelation of the murderer at the end was lackluster and lacked any excitement imho.

4 out of 5 stars Many of us have our own Hamish.......2006-06-14

This is the firs in a series of Inspector Ian Rutledge Mysteries. It does not take us long to know the man and the burden he carries. It is this side of him and the descriptions of the world after the Great War that adds a unique value to the writing and our lives also.

A week ago headstrong Colonel Harris was unceremoniously dispatched. All signs point to the dispatcher being a war hero with friends in high places. Who ever takes the case needs to be expendable. Rutledge's superior Bowls suspected Rutledge's secret and decided he would make the perfect scapegoat.

It is interesting as the story unfolds we see mysteries within mysteries, maybe a few red herrings and many unwell people that can usually be detected by Rutledge but not always. As there is a race with time Rutledge's trying to regain his uncanny detective skills we also but figure out who did the deed and who. To some the answer will be obvious to others it will feel that he pulled a clue out of the closet at the last moment. In any case you will be intrigued to the conclusion.

                          5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book.......2007-04-20

I had some of the stationary years ago, and didn't realize until I was at a second hand booksale the other day that the artwork was from a book. What a treasure of drawings!
And how wonderful to think that someone a)saved it and b) had the courage to reprint it exactly as it was, handwriting and all. Worth it just for the artwork, plus you get a view into the world of the women of that time. Having just seen the film "Miss Potter" and how hard it was for a woman to be taken seriously as an artist in England, this book is a delight to find.

4 out of 5 stars what are your opinions on this book?.......2001-11-07

5 out of 5 stars The best nature notebook I've ever seen!.......1998-01-09

Charlotte Mason was an educator in England in the last century, and one of her main educational methods was to have every student keep a Nature Notebook or Nature Diary---a record of the natural world as the children observed it first-hand. The student's Nature Notebooks were filled with poetry, prose, line drawings and watercolors.

"The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady" is the perfect example of a fully developed Nature Diary. The author went out amid the English countryside and recorded what she observed---the flowers, trees, birds, insects.

The artistry of the drawings and watercolors in this is absolutely breathtaking. If you're looking for an introduction to the idea of Nature Diaries, or you simply enjoy a book of true grace and beauty, then this is the book for you.

                            Book Description

Jean Langlais (1907-1991) was among the foremost French musicians of his time. He was the successor to the musical tradition established by Cesar Franck and, like him, was organist at the church of Sainte Clotilde in Paris. Though blind from early childhood, he became one of the most celebrated touring virtuos of his time, his legendary recitals always concluding with an improvisation upon a submitted theme. Langlais wrote a body of music for organ second only in extent to that of Bach, and his compositions for organ remain widely played. This biography by one of his favorite pupils examines both his life and music. HARDCOVER.

Jean Langlais: The Man And His Music by Ann Labounsky (Chair of Organ and Sacred Music, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an exhaustively researched biography of a grand virtuoso of twentieth-century French music, Jean Langlais (1907-1991). It is interesting to note that in addition to asking Labounsky to be his authorized biographer, Langlais also requested her to record his complete organ works. This is an impressive twelve volume project for the Musical Heritage Society begun in 1979 and which is still in progress today. Though he was a blind man born in poverty, Langlais lived to create unique and wondrous music as well as enjoy a long career as a traveling performer. This outstanding biography focuses heavily on his life, his virtues and flaws, as well as a thoughtful assessment of his great musical contributions. Highly recommended for students of 20th Century music history and academic reference collections.

5 out of 5 stars Great portrait of a great composer.......2000-09-28

Ann Labounsky, former pupil (and one time love interest) of Jean Langlais, composed this biography at his own request. Just as Paul Hillier has been for Arvo Part, so Labounsky proves herself to be for Langlais: uniquely and wonderfully understanding of both the man and music; definitely qualified to write authoritatively about him.

The book is brilliantly laid out. Taking as a frame narrative the composer's life story itself, Labounsky charts his progress as a musician from first lessons with various teachers at the French Institution for the Blind to his further education at the Paris Conservatoire, under Paul Dukas and Marcel Dupre and alongside some equally celebrated names (including Olivier Messiaen and Jehain Alain). It focusses in great depth on Sainte Clothilde, his lodestar, where he worked with Charles Tournemire, succeeding as director of music and holding the post for over forty years. It continues with tales of his work in America, his two marriages, children and grandchildren, his late-life heart problems and the obvious effect on his career, right up to his death and commemoration, before finishing with a complete list of works and some interesting notes on his teaching method, quoted from one of his own treatises.

Tied neatly in with this historical account is a description of Langlais' developing musical style- with each passing event, Labounsky provides a guide to the principal works composed at the time, showing how the music was affected by what happened and where, in addition to describing the essential features of the music itself.

Some surprising details of Langlais' life are revealed- for instance, his reputation as something of a ladies' man (he was attracted to women depite being married, and often gained inspiration for new works from his relationships with pupils, friends and acquaintances) may shock those who have thus far only seen him as an austere, mystical and religious figure, characteristic of his music. Fundamentally, we learn from this book that Langlais was as human as any of us, musicians and otherwise, and it makes his life seem all the more rich and poignant for knowing how he lived it and what it brought him.

This is a great book, an indispensable guide for any who wish to explore Langlais and his music in more detail than is provided by CD notes and concert programmes. Even having read only a little, I am already finding myself engrossed, enthralled and moved by it...
