Book Description
`This splendid addition to the literature on the Italian industrial districts deserves reading by all those that are interested in the local geography of production and innovation. Ivana Paniccia provides a fascinating critique of the "canonical" industrial district concept which leads her to an empirically based typology of industrial districts, whose evolution and performance follow distinct paths.'
- John Cantwell, University of Reading, UK
Utilizing a wide array of data and rich empirical evidence drawn from a large sample of industrial districts (IDs), Ivana Paniccia presents a realistic, state-of-the-art analysis of their socio-economic structure and performance. This extensive yet detailed study adopts a wide perspective, integrating historical evidence and different streams of literature - from industrial to regional economics - into testable hypotheses.
The multidisciplinary, quantitative approach adopted by the author, enables her to `de-structure' the `canonical' idea of the ID and evaluate the normative value. Supported by multivariate and econometric analyses, she identifies four general types of ID each with different development paths, performances, inter-organizational relations, and regulatory rules and institutions. The results demonstrate that IDs on average achieve better static or dynamic economic performance than non-ID areas. The analysis also highlights critical points of rupture in the socio-economic equilibrium of IDs which may impair their future competitiveness and social sustainability. The author offers a critical appraisal of the organizational literature on IDs, claiming for caution in their depiction as `cooperative systems' and goes on to present the first steps towards a `microfoundation' of a theory on IDs.
Providing the methodology to monitor the performance and evolution of IDs, together with precise policy suggestions, this book will appeal to a broad range of scholars and researchers in a variety of disciplines including regional, industrial and institutional economics, organizational studies and industrial sociology.

If the money that passes through the hands of African Americans was ever centralized, it would equal the gross national product of the ninth largest country on earth. Despite this collective wealth, few blacks take advantage of this country's stock market--a trend financial journalist Carolyn Brown would like to reverse. The Millionaires' Club, written under the auspices of Black Enterprise magazine, is a concise guide outlining the basics of acquiring money through establishment of an investment club. It works like this:
Groups of people pool their money to invest. The club requires members to plunk down a set amount of money each month, which it then uses to buy shares in securities--mostly stocks. Profits and dividends are plowed back into the portfolio until the club reaches its financial goal. The appeal is simple: As a group, people with small amounts of money can consolidate their financial resources to make larger purchases of company shares.
Brown details everything you need to know to start a club, including recruiting members, regulating the group, and how to become profitable. She advises clubs to invest in growth companies, to diversify investments, reinvest earnings and dividends, and to focus on long-term investments. Brown also advocates the use of the Internet, investing in real estate, and the building of youth investment clubs. All told, Carolyn Brown's wealth-building wisdom is sound and realistic: "The good news about belonging to an investment club is that not only are you helping to enhance the group's cash reserves, but you are learning personal wealth building for the enrichment of your family, children, and the next generation." A good investment, indeed. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Excellent guide to organize an investment club from scratch!.......2007-01-06
The author based this book on the official gude from the National Association of Investors Corporation, which is like the bible to organize investment clubs. But this book adds a lot of practical experience from other investment clubs that the official guide doesn't have. Go ahead and buy it if you are thinkiing of getting a good hold in organizing your investment club.
No Fuss No Muss Personal Finance.......2001-05-02
Let's face it. Personal finance is a drag. So many books, so much advice, and so much confusion. That is until you read the Millionaire's Club. Surprisingly, the author Brown does an excellent job. I say surprisingly because most personal finance writers seem to be just as dense as the very books that they keep churning out to the general public. Brown's book, however is short, clear and helpful. She's a straight shooter that believes in serving up no fuss and no muss personal finance. Millionaire's Club has got to be one of the best how-to investment club books currently on the market. I should know. I started an investment club three weeks after reading the book.
churning out.do a poor job of explaining difficult of little to of cutting through the morass of information involved in started starting ersonal finance jargon boiling down difficult concepts and Starting an investment club is Brown's book is not original, but it certainly is
Great Info.......2000-09-18
This book is a must have for those taking the necessary steps to a bright financial future. This book provided necessary information on all aspects of investment clubs from startup to management. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
The target audience for this book is any IT professional responsible for designing, configuring, deploying or managing information systems. This audience understands that the purpose of ethics in information security is not just morally important; it equals the survival of their business. A perfect example of this is Enron. Enron's ultimate failure due to a glitch in the ethics systems of the business created the most infamous example of an ethics corporate breakdown resulting in disaster. Ethics is no longer a matter of morals anymore when it comes to information security; it is also a matter of success or failure for big business.
* This groundbreaking book takes on the difficult ethical issues that IT professional confront every day.
* The book provides clear guidelines that can be readily translated into policies and procedures.
* This is not a text book. Rather, it provides specific guidelines to System Administrators, Security Consultants and Programmers on how to apply ethical standards to day-to-day operations.
Customer Reviews:
Walk the walk..........2005-10-29
It would be good if the author were capable of following his own advice; his personal examples contradict themselves on many important points, and when the moral questions get tough, he (or she) dashes away like a frightened rabbit, metaphorically speaking. A quick Google search turns up several lawsuits and evidence that this author is definitely not someone who should be writing about IT ethics under any circumstances.
This could have been better.......2005-02-02
I really wanted to like this book. There are a lot of good things in it, but the negatives outway them.
Problems:
* No bibliography, refrences or pointers to further reading/research. There have been other books on it/computer ethics, this is not the first.
* The slant seems too much toward ethics as it relates to security and security-related matters. There's more to it/computer ethics then that.
* No mention of the several professional organizations of IT/ITSEC people!!! Slight mention is made of ACM & IEEE, but no mention of SAGE (the System Administrators Guide at www.sage.org) which is THE professional association of sysadmins, who have spent YEARS developing a professional code of ethics. This code should have been included in the book. And what about the several professional groups of ITSEC people, like ISSA (Information Systems Security Association at www.issa.org) which also has a code of ethics, Computer Security Insitute (www.gocsi.com), and so forth?? They should have been mentioned. (and since SANS, the authors group, did stuff with SAGE, ignoring them is pretty bad).
Don't know right from wrong? This book isn't going to help........2004-12-08
Have you ever wondered if you are doing the right thing? Is is okay to steal from work? How about downloading pirated music using the company network? Do the rules apply to everyone? Can I do whatever I want if I'm a system administrator?
These are real topics covered in "IT Ethics Handbook". Sadly, each answer comes in two varieties: Conservative and liberal (each of which get their own font!). If you don't like one answer, you can just choose the other. The (long) list of contributors put their heads together to come up with rationalizations for both sides.
I tend to think that if you have to ask the question, you already know the answer, and if you truly don't, asking your friends, boss, or co-workers will clear it right up. Heck, the employee handbook might even answer them. The book doesn't really lay a foundation for ethics, but sticks to specifics questions. Indeed, it seems to ignore the idea that ethics isn't an absolute, and may vary between different groups and cultures. They merely mention all that stuff in the introduction, but then quickly discard it.
Some other paraphrased questions, in case you still think you need this book. You can quickly find a rationalization for the right and wrong of each and apply the answer that you like best.
- Can I write malicious virus code for profit?
- Should I use somebody else's login and password?
- Can I use company resources for personal gain?
- Can I videotape my co-workers having sex in the hallways? (real question)
- Do I have to obey the law?
- Can I be lazy?
- Can I spy on employees?
- Can I take revenge on a co-worker?
Perhaps this book is for the guy who wears the expensive suit and takes off fridays to play golf.
Clear cookbook for common ethical dilemmas.......2004-11-07
I'm glad that we are finally starting to see books like this. This is a good one but I would like to see more emphasis on this area with even better books.
The book is organized into chapters based on various roles and functions within and organization. Then within each chapter there are various ethical dilemmas which are discussed. The dilemmas is defined, then both liberal and conservative takes on the matter are described and the item is closed with an explicit stance on the issue.
This issues discussed are wide ranging, from storing personal files on work machines, to whether a workplace affair can be tolerated. This wide ranging discussion is one of the problems I have with the book. If the issues had been more focused on IT concerns then each item could have been covered in more depth.
Another problem with the book is it's layout. I found that the layout of the text and the material distracted from the contents. There was too much formatting.
I liked the book because I found the material compelling. If not the discussions themselves, which were too brief. It stretched my mind to think about these issues and to take input from different sides of the fence. I hope this book will be revised so that it is even more readable and valuable. In the meantime it is still worth the look for those in the IT field with ethics concerns.
How Do You Truly Define Ethical Right and Wrong in IT?.......2004-11-02
When do we as information technology professionals cross the line ethically? Who us to say what is right or wrong? Are there absolutes? Or is everything just relative. These are some of the questions posed by Stephen Northcutt in IT Ethics Handbook - Right and Wrong for IT Professionals ( 648 pages ; Syngress, 2004). The only problem is that for this reader, the book left me with more questions than it answered, though I found the many examples and "case studies" included would provide good references for discussion purposes.
The first thing that caught my attention was the author's identification of "moral relativism" as one of the dominant "religious thoughts" in the world today. The author also boldly states that in many cases "moral relativism" will "rapidly get you fired in the workplace". This latter statement may or may not be true, but itstruck me more as an ethical goal in a perfect world than as statement of fact. And there is no way in the world that this reader would consider "moral relativism" a stream of religious thought because it has no grounding in religion at all. It is a by-product of the drive for a secular society in today's world. It seems that the author does acknowledge to some degree that moral relativism is a culprit in the ethical quandaries of today, it serves as the framework for the discussion of each ethical issue raised, casting answers in a "conservative" and "liberal" point of view to show the extremes of the answers to different scenarios.
It is here that the readers of this book would need to be very careful, as is the challenge in looking at any case study, since nothing is always cut and dry since a scenario does not always include all the factors that can drive it. The author does acknowledge this and states that every case study and answer set offered may or may not be applicable to given organizational circumstances.
All of this being said, I would not recommend this book for anyone expecting to find cut and dry answers that they can apply to their organization. I would recommend it as a desk reference to use for ethics training session or to find information for the starting point of discussions for ethics issues that may arise at any given time in the workplace. The price is not that expensive that you would not get at least some value out of the book, even if it just challenges your thinking about what issues really fall under the realm if "IT Ethics" or how you would approach a given situation.

Tenant who used book.......2004-01-06
I had major trouble with a landlord. I was able to use the book to help know my rights and determine Colorado law regarding tenant rights when dealing with problem landlords. I suggest tenants read this book, so they know how to deal with renting and how to avoid problems!

Book Description
The rogue pilot has long been a menace in our skies, but a clear definition of just what a rogue aviator is, and concrete strategies on how to deal with one, havenOt existedNuntil now. Lieutenant Colonel Kern gives clear, practical advice for spotting, dealing with, and preventing the dangerous lapses in judgement and discipline that make a "rogue" aviator. An essential book for any pilot or aviation manager.
Customer Reviews:
Not Just for Pilots.......2006-06-09
It is a shame this book is out of print at this time. I am a commercial pilot and a physician. This book was introduced to me as a part of my recuring flight training. Ultimately, the themes made me redefine my medical practice as well. I have shared this book with dozens of people, pilots and non-pilots alike. Tony Kern has touched a fundamental theme by defining rogue behaviour, including rogue behavior by individuals and by organizations. Fellow pilots understand the themes easily. Other people, including fellow physicians, have privately told me that they fundamentally changed their practice procedures as a result of reading this book. One non-pilot told me that I had "saved his life" by suggesting that he read this book. Contemplative people, involved in aviation or not, will do soul searching as a result of reading this book. Rogues will be angry (as could be expected from the basic tenants of rogue behavior). Almost all will recognize rogue tendancies in their own behavior and will confront a decision to make corrective actions or to continue. This is not a book with a lot of confusing technical jargon. I highly recommend that you read this book if you get a chance.
I hope that demand will bring a new printing.
AN ANSWER TO A PSYCHOLOGICAL PUZZLEMENT!.......2003-09-05
Kern gives practical advice for spotting, dealing with, and preventing lapses in judgement and discipline that make a "rogue" aviator dangerous. This should be a must book for all pilots and aviation managers.
For a perfect complement, also read Keshner's COCKPIT CONFESSIONS OF AN AIRLINE PILOT, which is fun, brilliant, and belies its title.
GREAT BOOK - MUST READ FOR SERIOUS PILOTS.......2003-07-22
Excellent book and a useful outline for self evaluation. Stories used to illustrate the points are, for the most part, well written and also appear to be well researched. I gave it only 4 stars because it seemed to suffer from a mild case of political correctness. Examples - According to other sources the F-14 loss of control on departure accident which took 5 lives had a tie to the push to get Carla Hultgreen and her fellow F-14 pilots thru training. The doomed pilot of this airplane was rated below standards, but above the female pilots in the same squadron and thus allowed to continue. The discussion of the Ron Brown crash places a lot of blame on the squadron leadership for sending the aircraft on a mission in violation of regs. However, the major breakdown was the failure of Air Force leadership to tell the State and Commerce Dept that if you expect us to fly with this primitive nav equipement don't expect service to all these airports and the President and Congress who in their rush to cut defense spending put these aircraft on the line. Perhaps a discussion of the fact that the female officer in command may have felt some special pressure to complete the mission was warranted. Another minor complaint is that more details would help in understanding the issues surounding some of the crashes . For example if the reported weather is included then stating the applicable minimums, rather than just saying the weather was below minimums would have been helpful. Beyond these few issues this is an excellent read.
If you are a pilot it is an excellent gift to a younger pilot.
Darker, disturbing hues.......2001-12-28
Mr. Kern has suceeded in bringing to the forefront what I consider one of the greatest challenges to aviation: the rogue, undisciplined pilot. Rogues will continue to be a source of danger not only to themselves but their crews, passengers and people on the ground and this book should be required reading for everyone with a certificate (and even those who aren't pilots). Kudos to Mr. Kern for an eye-opening look at this threat.
Spot and handle dysfunctional aviators and organizations.......1999-08-31
This outstanding book takes the lessons of Flight Discipline and Redefining Airmanship a step further, by offering insights into individual and organizational traits that can corrupt professionalism and compromise safety.
A must-read for all aviation professionals.

Beautiful Photos, Beautiful Book.......2003-06-26
One of the best books of the year, hands down. Unlike so many books that sit on the table for a few months and then find their way to the back of the shelf somewhere, this book will stay on the coffee table for many years to come. And two great CDs to boot. The photographs are stunning. The work that Fat Possum is doing is underappreciated. I hope this book brings their work to a wider audience. Bravo.
Great combination!.......2003-05-15
I haven't been able to take the R.L. Burnside CD out of my player since I bought this book. As for the book itself, the photographs capture the spirit of this unique and wonderful label. Its mix of down-home and down-town reminds you that the blues is still vibrant, fluid, and alive.

The Extermination of the Jews as a Prelude to the Extermination of the Poles and Other Slavs.......2006-12-27
Leon Poliakov, a French Jew, provides the reader with an information-packed one-volume encyclopedia of the Holocaust. He covers such diverse topics as the rise of Nazism, the early persecutions of Jews, the development of what has become known as industrial genocide, Allied successes in freeing some Jews, Himmler's second thoughts on the extermination of Jews, and much more. He mentions the attempts of Max Naumann, a German Jew, to effect reconciliation between German Jews and the Nazis (pp. 10-11).
Unfortunately Poliakov, with some exceptions (see below), frequently lapses into standard Polonophobic and anti-Christian formulations. On the other hand, he makes the connection between recent German behavior and German attitudes that had long predated Hitler: "For decades, innumerable philosophers, journalists, and teachers had exalted the Prussian ideal of inflexible hardness and blind obedience--while the solemn Hegel himself deified the state. For a century the Jahns, the Arndts, the Lists, the Treitschkes, and the von Bernhardis had proclaimed the superiority of the German race and urged Germany on to new and joyous wars." (p. 284).
Poliakov presents evidence that contradicts the common stereotype of most Poles being indifferent to the sufferings of Jews. It also counters historian Yisrael Gutman's contention that common sufferings did not bring Poles and Jews any closer. The following is from a February 1940 letter from General Johannes Blaskowitz to von Brauchitsch: "The violence publically perpetrated against the Jews is not only provoking in the basically pious Polish people a deep disgust with their perpetrators; it is also creating a profound pity for the Jewish population, to whom the Poles were more or less hostile until now." (p. 42).
In 1936, Polish Cardinal August Hlond described Jews as "freethinkers, vanguards of Bolshevism, etc." for which he has been reviled as an anti-Semite ever since. It is interesting to note that Poliakov, using different words and employing a positive spin, makes basically the same generalization as did Cardinal Hlond. After listing several prominent Jewish Communists (e. g., Karl Marx), he writes: "These last remind us that it is in the Jewish tradition to be attracted to critical and reforming tendencies and to make common cause with the disinherited." (p. 9).
Poliakov devotes some attention to "Jewish passivity." He cites two different German documents in which German soldiers are cautioned to closely watch captive Poles and Russians, and to do so while fully armed. This is in explicit contradistinction to the watching of captive Jews (p. 226). On a larger scale, Jewish leaders long believed that the persecution of Jews could be stopped through the payment of massive bribes to the Gestapo (p. 99).
Ironically, for all the talk about Poles and Jews being "unequal victims", the Germans never saw any need to "protect" the Poles from being "defiled" by Jews: "On the other hand, certain sacral measures, such as the Nuremberg laws, were never introduced into a territory which the Nazis considered to be inhabited by an inferior race." (p. 38).
Poliakov's work is not limited to the extermination of the Jews. In a manner reminiscent of Raphael Lemkin, Leon Poliakov elaborates on the Germans' genocide of Poles in terms of the wholesale murder the Poland's intelligentsia, the reducing of the fertility of the population (including by the encouraging of abortion: p. 274), the mental degradation of the Polish population, etc. (pp. 268-280). He quotes Polish sources whose estimates are that 3 million non-Jewish Poles were murdered, with 35,000 Polish intellectuals among the victims (p. 269). He also recognizes the fact that any mass resettlement of Poles would have exacted a very high death toll (p. 277). This would in itself be tantamount to genocide.
Poliakov also recognizes the fact that the mass sterilization methods being developed by the Germans, not ready for use against Jews, were instead to be used as part of the mass extermination of the Slavic untermenschen: "It should also be pointed out that these ambitious projects were not aimed at the Jews alone, but looked to the immediate sterilization of all the so-called inferior races." (p. 253).
Meanwhile, Himmler spoke of 30 million Slavs killed as one of the eventual goals of Operation Barbarossa (p. 268), while Anthropology Professor Abel recommended the extermination of the Russian people (p. 266). Wetzel opposed the wholesale extermination of Slavs, not because the Slavs were deemed any more inherently worthy of life than Jews, but owing solely to obvious practical considerations (p. 266-267). Of course, as conditions changed, the extermination of the Slavs would become feasible, even through the employment of industrial genocide. Poliakov recognizes this fact: "The same word `genocide' applies to the persecution of `inferior peoples,' even if this was sometimes a `delayed' genocide...Once the `final solution' had been launched out on, all mental barriers were smashed and the necessary psychological precedent created...It was easy enough to see, moreover, by simple induction that so insane a scheme could not stop half-way; if the fortunes of war had given the Nazis enough time, the force of the logic of genocide would have inexorably driven other people and races into the gas chambers." (p. 264).
Poliakov does not mention that the Germans were, in fact, already employing industrial genocide on Poles. For instance, in the little-known death camp of KL Warschau, some 200,000 non-Jewish Poles were gassed and cremated.

The Extermination of the Jews as a Prelude to the Extermination of the Poles and Other Slavs.......2007-01-05
Poliakov defends the figure of 6 million murdered Jews against lower estimates.
