Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars International Marketing.......2000-10-17

A very well constructed book that ensures the reader understands what international marketing is and how it can add value to an organisation. The examples are interesting and give students plenty to discuss.

5 out of 5 stars If you are serious about global marketing strategies.......1998-10-07

This book is not for people who are seeking for magic formulas to achieve global marketing success. It compiles scientific articles from top academic researchers. As a whole, these papers can provide a broader view of global markets, as well as invaluable insights for marketing managers. A must for students, professors, marketing managers and entrepreneurs. The article from Sumantra Ghoshal and Christopher Bartlett, entitled "Building the entrepreneurial corporation: new organisational processes, new managerial tasks", is one of the highlights of this book.

Book Description

“Bernstein has become a guru to a peculiarly ’90s group: well-educated, Internet-powered people intent on investing well—and with minimal ‘help’ from professional Wall Street.”--Robert Barker, BusinessWeek

William Bernstein is one of today’s most unlikely financial heroes. A practicing neurologist, he used his self-taught investment knowledge and research to build a popular investor’s website. Now, in the plain-spoken The Intelligent Asset Allocator, he shows independent investors how to build a diversified portfolio—without the help of a financial advisor. A breath of fresh air for investors tired of overly technical investment tomes, this book will help investors:
• Learn the risk/reward characteristics of various investment types
• Understand and apply portfolio theory for an improved risk/reward ratio
• Sharpen their focus, and take control of their investment programs William Bernstein (North Bend, OR) runs a website—www.efficientfrontier.com—known for its quarterly journal of asset allocation and portfolio theory, Efficient Frontier.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A classic book on investing.......2007-07-07

Anyone who is serious about investing in marketable securities should read this book and keep it handy as a reference guide. The author is a brillant student of the market and passive investing techniques. All of the supporting data in the book has been developed by the author and his assistant. I would recommend this book for the investor.

Another book for the beginner and the experienced invesror as well How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 Different Stocks-Pay no Commission

5 out of 5 stars Jewel for long term contrarian investing from a US perspective.......2007-04-19

This book is for investors with a time scale of decades. So think about saving for a comfortable retirement. It argues from a point of view of an US American investor (types of asset classes and their behavior in time, all in US dollars, US tax laws, US investing instruments) but the described principles are general and also well suited for residents of other countries.
Bernstein has the ability of a very clear and down to the earth way of thinking. Even more important his prose is as clear as his thoughts. He takes you by the hand and leads you through quite difficult terrain. But as long as you hold his hand everything is clear and makes a simple impression.
His advice is solid and can be employed easily in practical investing. He even has advice for somebody with only thirty minutes of time for investments a year (Put it into the four asset types: domestic small caps, domestic large caps, foreign stocks and bonds of up to five years of duration. Split your assets in equal proportion to those types. Try to aggressively save fees maybe with Vanguard funds. Adjust the portions of those four asset types once a year to their original proportions.) Clearly this is good advice. If you read this book you also learn a lot of why this is effective. But if you do not know more than this advice: Will you follow it through thick and thin? Just imagine one asset type gets out of favor and loses a lot of value for a few years in a row. Then you have to pour yearly a lot of fresh and good money in exactly that asset type (Bernstein is a moderate contrarian). It is hard to believe that anyone has that strength without a well developed own opinion on that matter. Yes it is exactly the opposite of a stop loss. It is buy more of the losing types and sell the winning ones. The hope is to buy low and sell high.
So enjoy the ease of reading and Bernstein's brilliant simplicity, but don't be fooled by it. You will have to work hard to gain your own standpoint. And you have to invest actual money for a few years to get to know yourself.
For further reading this book has an excellent bibliography and the author runs a great website. I highly do recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fianance........2007-04-01

This is a great book. Don't make it your 1st finance book, but a great follow up to a "Random walk down Wall Street"

4 out of 5 stars Clearly explains the theory, its background, and use........2007-03-26

This is one of 3 books that I have on the subject .... and it complements those books each of which has its own particular bias.

The book is well worth buying, reading (with a few different color highlighters), and keeping it on the shelf for reference (.. in other words to keep one going back onto "track").

There is a bias towards using index funds; and this bias does use all the conventional wisdom -- wisdom that everyone else will be trying to employ. Therefore, there is a lack of ways to "jump-start" a portfolio -- ways that must be obtained from other books and newsletters.

5 out of 5 stars Efficient Frontier - Now I understand.......2007-01-31

This book can "turn on the lightbulb" for all types about what the Efficient Frontier really means! This is the best investment book I have read that attempts to focus the individual on risk - the most important facet of investing.

            Book Description

In this time of change and decreasing loyalty between companies and employees, workers in every industry are expressing feelings of being unappreciated, unnoticed, and uncared for. The situation is ironic because businesses spend millions of dollars every year jumping from one sure-fire approach to the next in unsuccessful attempts to improve the work environment. Why have so many techniques failed? It's because so much of what is presented as good management is only a disguised form of manipulation.

Leading With Love explains maternalisic management: leadership based on true concern for the well-being of the organization, the employees, the customers, and the leader. It explains how to balance the needs of all, and avoid organizational ills while nurturing your own personal and career success.

You'll discover why so many exciting business ideas haven't lived up to their promises. Many companies have adopted a succession of the latest techniques without experiencing significant change. The results: frustrated managers and a growing cynicism among both leaders and followers.

Leading With Love is a compelling presentation of how intuitively correct management theories can be implemented and lead to success for you and your organization when supported by the power of maternalism.

5 out of 5 stars Second Edition Review.......2004-11-09

The reviews from 1999 are for the first edition. The second edition has been significantly revised. It is written for culinary professionals, culinary students and independent restaurant owners and managers. If the text is adopted, it comes with extensive teaching and learning materials on CD.

            4 out of 5 stars Too expensive.......1999-06-03

While I think this bood definitely has merit and is a very good guide for someone starting up in the restaurant business, I think it is overpriced. After all, it is still a paperback and I would have expected to spend that amount of money on a hardbound book.

5 out of 5 stars An easy read, but too wordy........1999-02-14

Overpriced, redundant work. You can skip chapter 2, chapter 3 is the same and more. Not many people write on this topic, so this work is a useful tool.

Governing Boards: A Publication of the National Center for Nonprofit Boards

It goes without saying, that nonprofit Boards of Directors are the most critical key to organizational success. They are responsible for the selection and evaluation of the chief executive, they establish corporate policies, maintain fiscal oversight, are key links to community resources and much more.

Houle's book Governing Boards, is a thoughtful and extensive look at the roles, responsibilities, challenges, and unique concerns which face nonprofit boards and leadership. He focuses on what he calls the Tripartite System (The Board, the Executive and the Staff).

His extensive commentary provides examples that give meat to his observations. He gives excellent suggestions and analysis dealing with Board realities, behaviors and challenges. The book was published in 1989 and though somewhat dated, still provides valuable insights for those interested in nonprofit boards.

I was especially impressed with his chapters on organizational quality, measurement, and appraisal. His commentary on issues related to ethics and conflicts of interest was also excellent.

I found the book to be somewhat difficult to read. There is extensive narrative and few graphics or bullets, which made the book less helpful than it could be as a reference guide. However, the book does have an extensive table of contents and index.

There are a few obvious updates needed, based on the age of the publication, such as new business models used within nonprofits, new emphasis on accountability, planned giving, and new legislation which affects nonprofits. I was also disappointed that the role of Boards, in financial resource development (fundraising), was only briefly mentioned. Despite these weaknesses, Governing Boards is a publication which contains insightful and valuable commentary. I highly recommend it for those interested in nonprofit Boards.

                  Chapters include:

How to think about a Board (history, scope, structure)

The human potential of the Board (why people join, selection, recruitment, orientation)

The structure of the Board (size, tenure, terms, records, committees)

The Board, Executive and Staff (shared responsibilities, functions, choosing an Exec, evaluation, relationships)

The operations of the Board (group cohesion, planning, meetings, responsibilities, problem solving, quality)

The external relationships of the Board (publics, sunshine laws, linkage, social status, systems)

                    Book Description

France's most renowned classical singer shares reminiscences about her personal life and illustrious career in this charming memoir. With candor, affection, and humor, Regine Crespin reflects on her family, friends, and colleagues, her love affairs, and, most of all, the opera.

She recalls her beloved Italian grandmother, the pain of growing up with an alcoholic mother, and her adoring but troubled relationship with her father. Crespin describes her rise from a teenager with "a pretty little voice" to dramatic soprano, and provides delightful anecdotes about her performances at Bayreuth, the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, and other major opera houses and concert halls throughout the world. She openly discusses an abortion, her battles with breast cancer, intimate details of her love life, and contemplates the art of singing as well as the burdens of stardom. Crespin's exasperation with the lack of recognition from her own country is also revealed.

Populated with such figures as Herbert von Karajan, Lotte Lehmann, Jon Vickers, Leontyne Price, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, and Maria Callas, this engaging autobiography offers a vivid and fascinating glimpse into the world of opera. It is also the inviting story of a remarkable woman who was a diva on the stage but never a prima donna in real life.

What an artist! What a woman! This book reveals a lot about Crespin, her very private romantic life, illness, travels, interesting encounters, her views on art, recording, singing, and artists. Above all, it is an entertaining auto-biography of a diva who seems to observe her life with an awe that only the most talented people can access!

                    4 out of 5 stars "Visse d'arte, vissi d'amore".......1998-08-26

Luckily, unlike some divas' memoirs, Regine Crespin's autobiography is NOT a catalogue of concert dates and stage appearances. In her book, Crespin attempts to reveal the woman behind the diva. However, the reader realizes that the heroine and the diva are one in the same (as in "Tosca", one of Crespin's famous roles): Crespin is a real-life opera heroine with her emotions writ large in a manner appropriate for grand opera. Tosca's famous aria "Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore" ("I have lived for art, I have lived for love") could be sung in an opera of Crespin's life as well. In a world lacking real divas, I admire Crespin all the more for her honesty and candor in this book. However, she can't fool me....LA Crespin comes through on every page of this book, and I love it.

                        Book Description

In this book you will find the author's (a born Jew) perspective in his search for God's truth and plan regarding mankind's eternal salvation. The author clearly presents the following:

                        * Overwhelming evidence of God's existence.
                        * A clear explanation as to why the Bible is the true word of God.
                        * Why Jews and Gentiles should read the Old and New Testaments.
                        * God's redemptive plan is for Jews and Gentiles alike.
                        * Through all of recorded history only Jesus of Bethlehem fulfills the messianic prophesies that are found written in the Old and New Testaments. No one even comes close!
                        * A Jew can believe that Jesus is the seed of Abraham, the Son of God and remain a Jew forever.
