With all the controversies of variable annuities today, Michael does an excellent job of showing the appropriateness of the annuity. The book was written at the basic level for the investor, capturing an informative overview of the many different investment options such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds and how the annuity fits into the investor's overall investment strategy. I would highly recommend this book to all investors!
Excellent book..........1998-11-25
I've read many different points of view about the value of VAs -- this book explains them clearly. Lane's book shows how tax deferral wroks. He takes you step-by-step so you can see how all the parts relate and why. Read chapters 5 "Suitable Uses of VAs" and ch 18 "Analyzing the Payout" and you will know more than most advisors. Great book congrads.
A great guide for financial planners and end consumers........1998-11-25
Having been in this business for 5 years it's nice to find a refreshing look at the real uses of variable annuities and when they make the most sense. Michael is very enlightening in his approach to when a variable annuity makes sense and for whom. He also is very concise in his description of all the factors which contribute to determining the above. In an industry which is muddled with both the pros and cons of variable annuities this book is a straight shot to doing what is in the best interest of the client.

I am a novice investor and had no idea what an annuity was. Lane's book gave me the basics of what stocks and bonds were all the way through how to buy and annuity and use it to create a income to last my lifetime. I highly recommend this book.

An excellent primer on annuities. Any investor should read this book before considering purchasing an annuity. As a financial advisor I found his explanations simple yet definitive. Written in manner that any investor will be able to benefit from Michael's sound advice. While I believe that in general annuities are the most oversold product in financial circles (not becuse they are great product but because sellers earn huge commissions), Michael clearly demonstrates that annuities are appropriate in certain situations and tells you how to avoid the annuities that were designed to be sold not bought. He shows you what to type of product to look for when annuities are appropriate. Highly recommended.

Mike and Chris have done it! This is an easy and fast read for individuals looking to start a business. AND, if those starting a business do not have management experience, I strongly suggest you dive right in! They really hit the nail on the head - relationships, relationships, relationships. People working with people, inside and outside of the company. First customers are important and a good sales team (person) is critical. US companies doing business with the government need to keep a watchful eye on the owner structure....51% of a business needs to be owned by a socially and economically disadvantaged individual(s) before it can qualify for 8A status.
I'd also like to mimic their comments about MBAs - they're not always necessary. A sharp witted professor from the University of Maryland said it best to me: Higher education is for people without talent. When he said that, I was struck with how simple, but true this statement is. I would caution (especially Washingtonians) to keep in mind that the whole person is what should be considered, not just a decorated resume.
Mike and Chris have made a bevy of good and useful points in this expose. I would highly recommend reading it!
Simple, insightful, and fun.......2002-10-25
Does a book have to dense to be thoughtful? Does it have to use ten-dollar (or should I say pounds sterling) words to be smart? I don't think so.
Mike and Chris do a great job of clearly describing some of the key points and milestones of building a successful business. As a business advisor, MBA graduate, and entrepreneur, I agree with Chris and Mike that business is easy. The problem is there are several key points that you must tenaciously focus on and get right to be successful.
They do a great job of organizing and describing some of these key points based around an elevator pitch, a mentor, and your first customer. Other business books and scholars might describe it differently, but not in as interesting or entertaining a fashion.
If you're an entrepreneur, with little time to spare, The Beermat Entrepreneur, provides you many key insights in a quick, breezy, entertaining way. Enjoy.

Having seen Mike and Chris speak in London recently, and having read this excellent, practical guide to being a successful entrepreneur, I have to say this is a must-have for any aspiring professional businessperson. It's witty, entertaining and full of some really great stories that really are TRUE! I'd suggest this as a great gift for companies who want to kick-start their teams to really get their ideas off the ground. A terrific read!

Good Advice For Growing A Business.......2007-07-18
I picked up this book in the airport bookstore in Dublin while awaiting a flight back to the USA. I was impressed by the real world explanations and advice that the authors spell out for entrepreneurs who are looking to grow their business.
I loved the title (even though as a yankee I call that thing under my beer a coaster), but because of the title I expected more tips on cultivating an idea...and not as much about the growth management of a business. Although, the book is still a good read for anyone wanting to found a company.

This book aimes at giving the reader a comprehensive picture of the budgetprocess from the creation of the different parts of the budget to the finished result, and the processes after the completion.
The authors try to make it the most complete, practical and readable book about budgeting.
I think, that the result is very good. The only things I miss is more emphasis on the subject of making the budgetassumptions and the difficulties in educating people in the company in the budgetprocess.

The black separatist movement led by Marcus Garvey has long been viewed as a phenomenon of African American organization in the urban North. But as Mary Rolinson demonstrates, the largest number of Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) divisions and GarveyÕs most devoted and loyal followers were found in the southern Black Belt. Rolinson remaps the movement to include this vital but overlooked region, and offers a view of what southern Garveyites were like. Even after the UNIA had all but disappeared in the South in the 1930s, she says, the movement's tenets of race organization, unity, and pride continued to flourish in other forms of black protest for generations.

The reasons for the success or failure of neighborhood organizing efforts have been a persistent concern of policymakers and political analysts for decades. However, most studies of the subject have been limited in their ability to offer generalizations beyond their target area due to the constraints of local conditions or idiosyncratic group histories. This volume employs a case study of Birmingham Alabama's successful citizen participation program to examine the dynamics of grassroots political activity and the techniques that are effective in promoting such activity. As Haeberle demonstrates, the Birmingham neighborhood associations have the same rules, structure, and reliance on outside assistance, and are numerous enough to facilitate statistical analysis, thus offering an unusual opportunity to separate some of the long-term issues of organizational development from those that are more ephemeral. Planting the Grassroots relies on interviews with neighborhood presidents and with city decisionmakers involved in creating the Program, archival data collected on participation in neighborhood elections, and census data. Beginning with an overview of the origins of Birmingham neighborhood activity, Haeberle goes on to address the determinants of neighborhood activity and the effects of neighborhood participation. He examines why the programs were especially successful in certain neighborhoods, how the city structured neighborhood groups to achieve maximum participation, and the associations' abilities to stimulate activity beyond their own volunteer groups. The final section of the book looks at neighborhood organizations in the large context of city politics, and especially at the role of the local neighborhood association in dealing with urban race relations.

Amazing Book, Amazing Story for an Amazing Woman!.......2007-01-27
I received this book 2 days ago and I was so satisfied by the service! The book is written by a British celebrity journalist Robin Eggar and it is just great.
The story starts with Shania's great-grandfather's amazing story of survival, and ends when the breakthrough artist Shania Twain released her Greatest Hits album in November 2004.
It is a very-well researched book that gave me information about the Queen Of Country I have never heard before, even being a big fan of hers since 2002.
For Shania fans and non-Shania fans, this book is the ultimate story of her rags-to-riches adventure.

One bad point: the story ends as Shania starts her Come On Over tour... (a little outdated) but Shania's childhood is what matters... GREAT!!!

This is to (Larry S, "Mad Puppy") AWWWWWWW poor shania grew up poor. Well so do alot of people including myself. And shania's music is about a bibble gum and elementary as britney spears. Shania is one big joke to us country fans. Quantity does not = quality. Just cause she sells a whole latta cd's does not mean her music is good and it shore as hell dont mean her music is country. Theres a sucker born ever minute. She is a nashville POP singer. And Of course shania has sold more than any other country singer, she is marketed world wide. And if her music is country then why is it advertised and marketed as pop in other countries????????? And the scenstories thing is just another way for shania to suck the money out of the pockets her gullabe obsessed fans. And what would reba know?? Reba aint sang a country song it 17 years. Reaba is a big ol' sell out just like shania. All shania has is her look. she cant sing to save her life. Shania is a has been in the country world. Bye bye shania. All you shania fans should go listen to Hank Sr. Now THATS country. How many of shania's fans listen to hank. Probably NONE.

This book does a good job of covering the life of Shania in a summary manner due to its Reader's Digest nature (mini-book or long article).
The Nashville power base or good olde redneck boys hate Shania cause she ain't "true" country. No matter that she has sold more CD's than any other country artist, male or female.
Country music was declining in sales before Shania was discovered. She has brought new life to country music on a global scale, but gets few awards at the annual CMA ceremony and too many bad reviews by the media critics(magazine, radio jocks). Like Jesus Christ she's being crucified by the power politician's or "priest's" of country "religion".
Critics say she's a bubble gum singer(lyrics) which laughingly describes most country artist songs; she's too pop; she can't sing before a live audience (when she delayed in going on a concert tour after the Woman In Me CD)... on and on.
What matters most is her millions of world-wide fans love her, which shows in the number of CD's, DVD's sales, tickets sold at her live concerts around the world.
Shame on Nashville for crucifying this highly talented, and lovely lady. Jealousy is a nasty character flaw, along with hate, revenge...
Reba McEntire is quoted in the book "... It's almost like everybody is jealous of her success and I don't like that."

surprisingly tasty.......2004-04-13
Picked it up waiting in line in an east-kansas wal-mart. Couldn't put it down. I was expecting your garden-variety teen idol trash that you usually read while waiting in line to pay for your Funions and Blue Star Ointment. I picked it up for the cover shot of Shania, but kept it for the intensity of the words that lay behind the photo. Gray is obviously a guy as passionate about Twain as I am. To him, the scribe, I would like to say: "Keep scribblin'". After tossing a Carmex and a pack of Chiclets in my bag, I gladly paid the blue-vested cashier and rushed home to learn the rest of the story. Thank you Shania, for the music, and Mr. Gray for the courage to bring her story to us!
On Her Way is a must-read for anyone who waves the young-country flag.
Not My Kinda Biography.......2004-01-03
I love Shania, and this book has some great information about her life, and the experiences that shaped her. The problem is that the author's "extensive research" consists of reading every magazine article ever written about Shania, which the author has to acknowledge every time he quotes one. That means that almost every paragraph in the book contains a sentence like, "As she said in the May 1998 issue of Canadian Country Music Disgest...". I found this aspect of the book very annoying! If not for my interest in Shania, I wouldn't have had the stamina to finish this book.
