    Book Description

Cultural organisations have long been protected from the harsh realities of the marketplace by relying on wealthy patrons or public subsidies. But as these sources of finance become more scarce they now find that they have to compete for an audience. Some have adjusted to this new reality, but many have not. This book describes the new competitive environment in which cultural organisations now operate and how the more innovative ones are re-thinking their marketing strategies. These organizations realise that they are dealing with a new type of cultural consumer - one who is willing to cross the boundary between popular culture and high art but who wants a cultural experience that also entertains. With dozens of examples from the UK, US and elsewhere, this book will be essential reading for those who work in cultural organisations as they struggle to fit into the new marketing environment. It focuses on those aspects of marketing most related to the challenges currently facing cultural organisations, including determining their market segment and the positioning of their cultural product in a crowded marketplace. It will also be ideal for students of arts management or those who hope to work in the cultural industries. The new edition includes a useful chapter focusing on promotion. Each chapter now includes worksheets, which take the reader through the marketing planning process and are an invaluable aid for evaluating the organisations marketing environment and in establishing its strategy for attracting audiences.

Just about everyone has heard a story about a corporate secretary or twentysomething Microsoft employee who retired early--as a millionaire--not because of winning the lottery, but because she exercised the stock options granted by her company. The fact is, many, many working Americans have access to stock and option plans in the workplace, and although it is a bit of a stretch to assume that such plans are a guaranteed ticket to riches, equity compensation can be an intelligent means for building wealth. The trick, according to Kaye A. Thomas, is understanding and handling it properly, and this is where Consider Your Options comes in.

Thomas, a veteran tax lawyer, has written a straightforward, no-nonsense, plain-language guide to getting the maximum value from your equity compensation. He begins with the basics--what stock is and how to buy and sell it, stock grants and purchases, options in general--and proceeds with clear examinations of nonqualified and incentive stock options. From there, he leads the reader through the ins and outs of exercising stock options, vesting, and employee stock-purchase plans, with an emphasis on tax implications and financial planning (an entire section of the book, for example, deals with the Alternative Minimum Tax).

"There are certain things about stock, options, and taxes that are almost never explained because every idiot knows them," Thomas writes. "Unfortunately, there are many normal, intelligent, educated adults who don't know these things--because hardly anyone ever bothers to explain them." Now that Thomas has bothered, novices and experts alike can avoid the common mistakes and poor planning that jeopardize the highest return from these benefits. --Svenja Soldovieri

      Book Description

This is the latest edition of the most popular book on this subject, providing a plain language explanation of employee stock options and related forms of equity compensation. It continues to be the best selling book on this topic because no other book can make these claims:

      * Written in a direct, informal style that makes it easy for a novice to read, yet authoritative enough to be used by a tax professional or investment advisor.

      * Covers nonqualified stock options, investment stock options, restricted stock, restricted stock units and employee stock purchase plans.

      * Includes a balanced discussion of investment aspects, covering advantages of holding employer stock as well as the risks in failing to diversify.

      * Provides the clearest possible explanation of complicated tax rules such as the way alternative minimum tax (AMT) applies to incentive stock options.

      * Stresses sound planning and warns against faulty strategies.

      * Offers pragmatic tips on topics like record keeping, selecting an advisor, and paying estimated tax.

      * Updated for recent changes in the tax law and other developments.

The 2005 edition is a major revision from the previous edition, with new design, content and organization to make it even easier for employees to learn what they need to know about their equity compensation.

      * Reflects tax changes occurring in 2004, including new regulations for incentive stock options and new rules for nonqualified deferred compensation.

      * Now covers restricted stock units (RSUs).

      * New chapter on how to select and work with an option advisor.

      * New graphics and callouts make it easier to grasp the main points.

4 out of 5 stars Mandatory Options Reading!.......2005-10-20

Barring an extensive endeavor to compile the various option programs offered by industry on you own, Thomas' "Consider Your Options" is an extremely helpful text for both individuals new to the options sphere as well as experienced program administrators to pick up on the nuances of the various qualified and unqualified differences. Definitely a must-have for either executives or financial advisors who work with executives to use as a tool to help establish a strategy to protect and enhance their wealth. A solid addition to your desk reference library. 4 Stars.

2 out of 5 stars Covers the basics, but not strategy or advice.......2003-12-30

This book is good in that it covers all the basic mechanics of stock options -- Incentive and Non-Qualified, and ESPP plans. However, this basic information can easily be found on the web or from your employer.

What is sadly lacking from this book is advice on strategy on how to manage options, e.g., ideas on when to exercise and sell. Because of this, the book is quite disappointing to me and not very useful.

5 out of 5 stars If you have any stock options, GET THIS BOOK!.......2002-07-12

This is the perfect book for anyone who has any stock options or who can participate in their company's Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP). It starts very simply, and in a series of short, but complete chapters, covers the spectrum of stock ownership, vesting, ISOs vs. NQOs, the effect of AMT, and much more.

Did you know that stock purchased in an ESPP is treated by the IRS in almost the same way that an ISO is? That there is usually no long-term advantage to buying and holding Non-qualified options? That you only have 30 days to file your 83b exclusion? (If you don't know what an 83b exclusion is, you need this book).

The book does its best to explain Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), and althought this chapter fried my brain, its because of the complexities of the AMT (simplify it IRS!), not because of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for people with equity in their company..........2002-07-09

An excellent resource for anyone seeking to understand and be involved in planning strategies to maximize the after-tax value of your stock compensation. Covers restricted stock grants, options (ISOs & NQSOs), employee stock purchase programs (ESPP). Various areas of tax planning are covered in detail: strategies to minimize AMT, effects of early exercise thru 83b election, gifting or donating options/stock, etc.

The author describes topics in a matter that is both thorough and easy to read. The book is organized into sections devoted to specific topics making it easy to skip or skim sections that may not pertain to your particular situation (e.g. there are separate sections on NQSOs and ISOs). Additionally, the author makes good use of examples throughout the book to illustrate complex rules. This latest edition (Apr 2002) includes updated information regarding changes to tax laws as well as explanations of pitfalls that many optionees have encountered recently (e.g. ISO "wash" sales).

This book is a must have to anyone who receives a portion of their compensation in the form of equity, whether it be stock grants, options, ESPP, or any combination of these. The book is both an informative read as well as a handy resource to keep on your bookshelf. After reading this book, most people will have all or nearly all the tools & info they need to develop their own strategies for managing their stock should they so desire. For those seeking professional advice, this book serves as a great overview so that you can understand the process and ask all the right questions. I only wish I had found this book sooner :)

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Options out of the four I got.......2002-01-22

Structuring a deal with two companies to work for options - and needed some advice. Bought every book that I could get my hands on 1. Consider Your Options Kaye A. Thomas (Harvard Lawyer - (male) ) GREAT! Excellent advise parceled out with just the right amount of depth - but gets to the meaty stuff. Really told me not only what I wanted to know - but other things that I didn't know I needed to know. Easy to read - learned - good stuff.
      2. Better Than Money David E. Gumpert - Not as learned a book - but easy reading and focused on the employee side. Addressed several issues about negotiation of options in a hire situation
      3. Pay Me In Stock Options C.E. Curtis - Hard Back - but cheap. I would not recommend - a hard read, not organized
      4. Stock Options for Dummies Alan R. Simon The basics - and well done - but didn't address several of the issues that I wanted to know....How to get more ....and the psychology aspect of obtaining them.

          Book Description

New standards of corporate behavior have been established in developed countries, obliging them to record information about the "triple bottom line" in their annual reports. It has induced strategic orientations developed by corporations, especially multinational companies. Research about social, environmental and overall ethical behaviour of companies has been developed. The concept of stakeholder has simultaneously gained a kind of "metaphoric evidence". The book comments on the American theoretical foundations of the notion of Corporate Social Responsibility, and more specifically, the concept of the stakeholder, and it defines a European perspective.

            Book Description

The role of consultants in business life has increased dramatically, along with the need for ethical guidelines for their behaviour. This volume explores consultancy at many levels, in different fields and in different countries, including Eastern Europe. The focus is on the ethics of consultants be they in government, private enterprises, or are lobbying large organizations. The ethics of the client is not ignored either and recommendations are given as to how the client and consultant roles should function. An entire section of the book is dedicated to consultancy and ethics in Eastern Europe, where definitions are perhaps not as `black and white' as in Western Europe. Additionally, this volume explores the question of teaching business ethics to the next generation of business leaders. Ethics is a complicated, often very personal subject. This book gives readers an insight into just how difficult it can be to behave `properly' in today's consulting world.

              Book Description

Today’s management is faced with the new task of implementing and dealing with standardised ethics management systems and values programs. It is a widely accepted fact that these have to be designed individually and firm specific, if they are to be a success. On the one hand, these systems are a business card for the companies. On the other hand the companies have to meet the growing public demand for evaluating the seriosity of these systems.

The articles investigate the contents and processes of good corporate practice. Their main focus is on the question of integrating the moral values and ethical demands into economic and corporate decisions by ethics standards in a way that is credible and understandable for society.

The volume presented here is the first of its kind, due to the fact that it contains a collection of all relevant European ethics standards which are a part of a modern Good Corporate Governance. The reader is provided with an overview of the state of the European discussion.

                    Book Description

Leading the problems most critical to government decision makers worldwide are those that derive from privatization, democratization, and decentralization. Dr. Nagel and a panel of academics and practitioners help clarify the ways in which problems traceable to these trends are being handled -- and how they might be handled better -- in light of the goals, experiences, constraints, and other factors affecting participants in world governance. Among the many important features of the book is its interdisciplinary approach and the way it offers African, Asian, Latin American, European and North American viewpoints. It also combines the perspectives of liberal and conservative ideologies. Cross-national with concrete examples and broad concepts and principles carefully detailed, the book is an important source of background and insight. Nagel and the contributors make clear that privatizing can involve shifting from government to private operations, with or without government ownership and with or without liberal contract provisions to protect consumers, workers, or the environment. They show that democratization can include the expansion of political participation and can give minorities the legal right to convert the majority to their positions, possibly the technological and economic facilitators as well. They also investigate ways in which national or state governments can be involved as "high units" in decentralization processes, but show that decentralization can involve local governments, neighborhoods, businesses, or even individuals as the lower or "decentral units." Throughout, the book offers alternative positions and discusses their consequences from a variety of cross-national and interdisciplinary perspectives.

                      Book Description

Dneprostroi, a dam and power plant that was one of the most monumental construction projects of the Bolsheviks' First Five-Year Plan, was a milestone in American-Soviet cooperation and the fruit of the labor of more than 60,000 workers. Little known in the West, Dneprostroi was famous in the USSR--as the largest earth dam in Europe in the 1930s, it represented the first of the giant projects so favored by Stalin. Anne Rassweiler's informative history of this project reveals new aspects of the struggle between Trotsky and Stalin, the debate on the use of foreign advisers, the importance of foreign technology, and the devastating effects of collectivization on the industrial projects of the First Five-Year Plan. Her study also provides insight into the entry of women into the industrial work force and the interaction between party leaders, party membership, and enterprise officials as they sought to realize one of the most ambitious projects in Soviet history.

                          Book Description

Vladimir Ussachevsky (1911-1990), a pioneer in electronic music, was also a composer, teacher and administrator of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. His more than 44 works involving electroacoustics reflect the importance of his contribution to electronic music. Ussachevsky studied with Howard Hanson, Bernard Rogers and Otto Luening and his style varied from neoromantic and Russian Orthodox influences in choral music and other compositions before 1952 to electronic and computer music from 1952 to his death in 1990. This volume in the Greenwood series Bio-Bibliographies in Music includes a brief biography and detailed list of works and performances, discography, mediagraphy, and bibliography of writings about and by Ussachevsky. Music scholars, especially those with an interest in electronic music or those interested in learning more about Vladimir Ussachevsky, will appreciate the detailed information about his works and writings compiled in this one volume. The works and performances section is organized by type of music, including electronic, orchestral, chamber, keyboard, choral and vocal. Also included are both an alphabetical and chronological list of compositions, a list of Ussachevsky's collaborations, arrangements and sound effects, and an index.

                                  Book Description

This collection of essays, written by a distinguished group of literary critics, explores the Jewish woman's experience in Latin America. It came about as an attempt to define the cultural experience of Jewish Latin American women writers, as well as their relationship with their various countries. Included are Ilan Stavans and Magdalena Maiz-Peña writing on Mexico, David William Foster on Argentina, Regina Igel and Nelson Vieira on Brazil, Elizabeth Ross Horan on Chile and Uruguay, Joan Friedman on Venezuela, and Ruth Behar, Ester Shapiro Rok, and Rosa Lowinger on Cuba.

As Marjorie Agosín notes, the role of memory for the writers included in this volume is a central theme. The majority of them are daughters of Sephardic or Ashkenazi immigrants, many of whom fled the Holocaust. They write openly about their identity and their hybrid condition as Jews in predominantly Catholic countries, an issue that has not, until recently, been addressed with candor.

A lively analysis of the major contribution of Jewish women writers in Latin America.

                                      Book Description

Around the turn of the century, the United States was still experiencing the mass migration of millions of Jews and other immigrants escaping oppression and poverty in Europe. Set against this historical backdrop, author Louis Harap examines the development of the Jewish American, as both writer and character, from 1900 to the 1950s. Creative Awakening traces fifty years' development of Jewish American fiction, poetry and humor, as it analyzes fictional portrayals of Jews themselves.

                                          Book Description

This book gives a political reading of E. L. Doctorow's fiction. For Doctorow, there was a tension between the ideals of his socially aware family and those of the new critics under whom he studied as an undergraduate. This tension, making him skeptical about the possibilities of political involvement, has been beneficial because it has enabled Doctorow to avoid the excesses of both polemical writing and formalism. Through a stance Tokarczyk terms "skeptical commitment," he has written political fiction of high literary quality. In part, he has done so by adapting genres such as the western and the romance. Furthermore, Doctorow has used experimental techniques to express political and historical themes, thereby writing a kind of postmodern fiction that still maintains the possibility of establishing some truths, while acknowledging indeterminacy.

                                          Book Description

Adam Zachary Newton couples works of prose fiction by African American and Jewish American authors from Henry Roth and Ralph Ellison to Philip Roth and David Bradley. Reading the work of such writers alongside and through one another, Newton offers an original way of juxtaposing two major traditions in American literature and rethinking their sometimes vexing relationship. Newton combines Emmanuel Levinas' ethical philosophy and Walter Benjamin's theory of allegory in shaping an innovative kind of ethical-political criticism. A final chapter addresses the Black/Jewish dimension of the O. J. Simpson trial.

Not sure how many of you are familiar with the writings of Adam Zachary Newton, but for those who aren't, you should be. I have been anticipating this text ever since I heard (back in March) that it was to be published. A brilliantly educated lecturer and one of the smartest men you're ever likely to meet, Newton has again published a text (following the publication of his award-winning book, "Narrative Ethics") that confronts and educates the reader, this time comparing the writings of a selected number of black writers and the work of a number of Jewish ones on a one to one basis, pairing Ralph Ellison, Henry Roth, Philip Roth, David Bradley, Cynthia Ozick, Bernard Malamud, and others. Frankly, coming from a theater background, I must say that I particularly enjoyed the final chapter relating David Mamet's film "Homicide" to the O.J. Simpson trial. In a day where the O.J. trial has been looked at from more angles than the Hauptmann case, this offers a fresh and dramatic literazation of the event that is both interesting and incisive. Before I get off sounding like some sort of raving AZN fanboy, I will end this review by saying only that you should definitely read the book for yourself. The ideas in this text transcend the normal academic outpouring from the universities and are well-suited for a mainstream thinking audience.

                                            Book Description

The Golem in Jewish American Literature explores the golem in the fiction of Thane Rosenbaum, Nomi Eve and Steve Stern as well as writers such as Michael Chabon. Nicola Morris sees this clay humanoid, created in Jewish legend for practical and spiritual purposes, as a metaphor for power and powerlessness and for the complexities and responsibilities surrounding the act of creation. Further, she employs the golem figure as a device to examine the problematic Holocaust representation in the second generation, the uncertain boundaries between fiction and historiography, the ethics of intertextuality and the writer's responsibility to literary, folkloric and oral sources. Morris concludes with an impassioned plea for the responsible uses of power, technology and language.

                                                Book Description

Conceived as the first work to identify Jewish writers of the twentieth century worldwide, and examining in particular the Jewish themes in their work, Jewish Writers of the Twentieth Century is both an important reference resource and a springboard for further study. It contains some 330 entries on individuals, arranged alphabetically, as well as five introductory essays. The entries on individuals consist of an outline biography, a list of selected publications, suggestions for further reading, and a signed interpretive essay. The introductory essays provide an overview of Jewish writing in America, the emergence of Holocaust literature and memoirs, Yiddish writing in the twentieth century, and the development of Hebrew literature, as well as an essay exploring Anglo-Jewish literature. The book amounts to a literary and social history of the Jewish people in the twentieth century.

This encyclopedia contains one- thousand word entries on three-hundred and thirty Jewish writers. I have read sample entries, and from them have a great deal of enthusisam about the book. In two of these entries Sorrel Kerbel, the editor and one of the many contributors to the volume interviews Anita Brookner and Cynthia Ozick. She incorportates their remarks in the overview she provides of their work. What I especially liked about this feature was that she asked them how they felt about their Jewishness and the part it played in their writing. Brookner was escapist and defensive. Kerbel however shows how strong an element her Jewishness is in the sensibility of her always slightly alienated - from- British- society characters. Ozick in opposite speaks about the Torah and the Jewish text as at the center of Western Literature.
Each entry on a particular author also contains bibliography of their work, and suggestions for further reading.
This seems to me a vital work for every Jewish Library.
