This fact-packed reference book contains statistics on economic conditions, demographics, trade, investment, labor, consumer profiles, public services, infrastructure, business opportunities, investment incentives and also the cost of living in all Mexico's states and their major cities. I enjoyed this edition immensely because the charts and graphs were very easy to understand, the information was current and reliable and it was written in both English and Spanish. This book is wonderful for investors or anyone looking for facts about Mexico.

Markets in Mexico turned out to be a great source of information for me as I was looking for specific facts about different states in Mexico. The book provided me with all kinds of information regarding the conditions of the economies, infrastructure, business activities and consumer markets. As an investor it was important for me to have a clear understanding of the potential risks and benefits involved before deciding which of Mexico's states to invest in. I also appreciated the list of state government agencies that the book provided as a source of contact. Markets in Mexico was very beneficial to me and I hope others will find it as useful as I did.

Just the facts, ma'am.......1999-02-25

This book contains an exhaustive volume of data and statistics about Mexico and its states that you simply can't find ANYWHERE else.

I use it in my law/consulting firm in Monterrey on a daily basis.

I have looked for other publications, and nothing exists like this book, put out by the American Chamber of Commerce.

My only worry is that if enough people find out about this, I might be out of a job!

Not Very Useful, But Has Some Insights.......2005-05-17

As others have said, this book really doesn't tell you anything about trading. Instead, it focuses more on what kind of person would make a good trader. It reminds me of the articles about different professions my high school guidance counselor gave me when I was a kid.

There are many contributing writers to this book, which is a bit confusing since the cover only mentions Leslie Masonson. It appears he was basically the editor of the book, who also wrote a few chapters. He conducted a survey, and published the results, which is worthwhile, and could be interesting to prospective traders.

I found Chapter 11 on tax evasion (er, I mean planning) by Ted Tesser to be written poorly. I haven't read something so repetitive since Wade B. Cook's "Wall Street Money Machine". Tesser has a few ideas (which may be good, who knows), which he repeats (often in bullet form) over and over again. I couldn't imagine buying Tesser's book which he plugs in that chapter. Just hire a tax attorney... might cost more up front, but the at least you won't be wasting your time.

The last few chapters contain interviews with many different traders. Masonson plugs each of their websites (about half of which are out of business as of May 2005). Some of these traders seemed to have intelligent advice, others seemed to barely know what they are doing themselves.

In summary, I found this to be another run of the mill book on trading. Like so many books on the subject, you feel like the main goal of the book was to promote other businesses offered by the writers. I suggest if you still want to read it, you do as I did, and borrow it from your local library rather than waste your $$.

One of the dozen.......2003-02-15

If you want to be successful in this field. You probably need minimum a dozen books for perodically refreshing your mind. Just like you need a minimum 12 stocks to achieve the diversification.

This one will do the job. I doubt you have the time to go over all the books ever published in this field.

I have heard the importance of money management in every of the hundreds book I have read in the past few years. I believe it is true. But this is the only book finally push me to the immediate action. After I spent whole afternoon do a experiment try to veryfy the statement on Percentage of Risk on page 184. I only did 33 tosses instead 100 tosses.

I also believe day trading is hard. But just as the old adge "you will not shed the tears until you see the coffin." This book will do the trick. This book give you some of the other side truth.

This the second time I read this book. Both time by borrowing it from local library. Now I am going to buy one for keep. Even though not every chapter is to my liking.

Great overview/introduction.........2002-02-18

I have been looking into trading in general for the last 2 months or so. I strongly believe this should be one of the first books to be read.

Why such a strong recommendation/endorsement ?? Because of a very interesting survey and discussion about the success rates of day traders and their age profile for example. How much money did aspiring day traders make during the first 6 months ?? And so on ..

So it is a strong overview of the industry. It is available in the local library for me. If it weren't I wouldn't have bought it because some of the reviews on this forum were so negative. But I did read it. It is a great source of information ..

This was a fun book to read if you like trading books in general. There are some good points on system selection (almost too much), tax tips and an interesting section on Psychology. The interviews with traders are very general and do not contain any information on strategy of the traders. Had the interviews contained more strategy and less chit chat, this would be an excellent selection. As is however, just so so..

If ever I have bought a worthless piece of #### this is it. This man has absolutely nothing useful, except to warn you time and again not to be a day trader. He repeats the same very basic concepts in all the beginning chapters. I learned nothing useful except a ton of webpages and daytrading courses offered by the daytraders who he interviewed complete with thier 800 numbers....A real waste of ... I kid you not.

Useful Primer on Ethical Dilemmas in Journalism.......2004-06-21

This is an extremely well written collection of essays and case studies outlining the ethical issues behind journalism, which can be useful to both practicing journalists and media watchdogs. The book starts by dividing journalistic ethics into political, philosophical, and economic categories, in addition to issues of objectivity and privacy. This is followed by real-life case studies in which reporters and editors had to make tough ethical decisions regarding everything from crime to suicide, AIDS to car accidents, and political scandals to war reporting. The most refreshing aspect of this book is its insistence that none of these ethical crises have clear cut-and-dried answers, and that the process of examination and decision making in the face of such dilemmas is most important, while much can be learned from the experiences of the real-life journalists profiled here. The book was thorough and efficient. The cases are challenging but are given to expand and open a journalist's mind ethically. The commentaries help the reader sort out what they just encountered while it presents all sides of a possible ethical decision. The commentaries doesn't demand that the reader take on a certain ethical decision, but instead produce options that exercises the student's mind. Literally, a reader's brain will hurt after closing this book. However, it's a good thing, the book works to produce ethically thoughtful journalists who will venture out into the field. It is a book I plan on keeping on my shelf, while keeping it's teachings in the back of my mind.

Managerial Accounting.......2000-08-14

Though I've not yet instructed managerial accounting with this text, I will be using it for next year's courses. The text provides excellent supplementary materials for the instructor as well as the student. The text has been in publication for several years (currently the 9th edition is in use) and the problems have been reviewed several times over for accuracy. Within the instructor's edition, are numerous examples from popular current events and for the average undergraduate student. Additionally, the text is suitable for a graduate course. Brilliant pictures, colorful asides, and practical, real-life examples enhance the readings. Managerial Accounting by Garrison/Noreen is an excellent resource for any practitioners collection.

Detailed and Heavy Reading.......2004-01-23

I have, in the past, collected most if not all of the zappa books. I have read the Negative Dialetics, Electric Don, MOTHER! and a host of other semi famous books - not to exclude FZ's own book on himself... they all have good parts and not so good parts... but this particular book is pretty impressive.

It has a detailed account of each release, the people that FZ ran into, most of the silly stories of encounters. And the best part, the author does not seem to have an opinion of the subject. This makes the reading easy to read... a lot of the books mentioned earlier, either tried to paint FZ as a communist or a socialist or this or that, and the agenda they had writing the book really disjointed the writing.

So, if you are looking for a good book to read about frank and what he did music wise, entertainment wise, this is a very good place.

However, I am not knocking the other books, they were, at the very least, entertaining. I enjoyed reading them. They are all worth the purchase price (Maybe not Negative Dialetcts Of Poodle Play).

This book has its place. If you're looking for a very complete reference of Zappa recordings and band personnel changes here it is. But this is not much of a biography apart from a few key facts about schooling, kids' birthdates and such. There are no quotes, and only the most succinct and dry accounts of events. There's a great deal of shallow "sidebar" material on the order of "the single release was a 1:05 longer than the album". If that's what you're after, go to town, but look elsewhere for a serious (or humorous for that matter) Zappa biography.

An amazing read!.......2002-05-19

Sometimes it makes me wonder what book people are reading when I look at other reviews. I have more than 20 books on Zappa and this is the most amazing collection of Zappa information ever compiled. Since more than half of the information in this book has not appeared elsewhere, it was certainly not cut and pasted from another book. It is, in fact, Neil Slaven's book which is rife with errors. This book, in a convincing fashion, proves Slaven wrong time after time with the documentation enclosed within. Why can't other books be put together like this one? If you want to learn about Zappa, this is the place to go after you purchase Frank's book. It should also be noted that the author of "Cosmik Debris" was also greatly involved with the Original Sound CD reissue of Frank's earliest recordings. No other FZ book author can claim this on their resume. I would suggest that all FZ fans buy the book now!

I have read the following books about Frank Zappa:

THE REAL FRANK ZAPPA BOOK by Frank Zappa and Peter Occhioigrosso

NO COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL: THE SAGA OF FRANK ZAPPA by David Walley

COSMIK DEBRIS: THE COLLECTIVE HISTORY AND IMPROVISATIONS OF FRANK ZAPPA by Greg Russo

BEING FRANK: MY TIME WITH FRANK ZAPPA by Nigery Lennon

With the exception of BEING FRANK, all were well written, interesting, thought provoking and worthwhile reading material.

Each of these books (again with the exception of BEING FRANK) creates a picture of Frank Zappa. Each shows a different dimension of the same person. COSMIK DEBRIS is unlike the two because it provides greater technical details. For example, Russo provides the greatest degree of information regarding the business and artistic aspects of Zappa's life and musical history. He shows how classical artists had an impact on Zappa's musical proclivities, but explains historical linkages based on the artistical/musical techniques. For years, I've been attempting to explain Zappa to a friend in Maine who is a classical pianist. I don't think she understood me until I gave her some passages to read from COSMIK DEBRIS.

COSMIK DEBRIS provides an important dimension into the understanding of this artist that none of the other books do. It is more technical than the others are. However, and most importantly, it is a critical addition to everyone's Frank Zappa library.

Well...it's concise........1999-12-31

Russo's prose, admittedly is better than Walley's, but the text is essentially a watered down version of Slavin's superior biography. The only interesting aspects of the book are collected newspaper clippings (most of which are illegible) and assorted photos, although they feature none of the bands from the latee 70s and 80s. By far the worst aspect of the book though is Russo's attempts at deciphering conceptual continuity, which run: '"Zomby Woof" is a corruption of "Zombie Wolf"' No! Really? Wow, how insightful. And '"Evelyn, a Modified Poodle" was yet another canine reference.' If you've read any other bio, this is relatively useless, and far too expensive for what it includes.

Varieties of Reading Experience.......2004-05-05

This book is a fascinating, thought-provoking meditation on religious issues related to William James' classic work. Taylor's take on religious developments in Western Europe/North America is fascinating and enlightening in several senses of the word. And while truly respectful of William James and his insights, Taylor is no cheerleader and convincingly discusses a number of James' key blind spots along with their probable sources. The book's brevity and readability belies the punch it packs.
The one glaring imperfection is the pedantic and pretentious refusal to translate French quotations, some of which seem like they're probably quite important. Too bad, I'll never know for sure.

What the heck?.......2002-09-20

Seeking enlightenment? Seek somewhere else? This "update" to the classic is a classic waste of time. Unlike the original, you will give it to your library to write it off on your taxes.

A reflection on religious belief and the state.......2002-06-29

This book is a collection of a series of lectures Charles Taylor gave reflecting on the legacy of William James. In thinking about James' work, Taylor reflects on the tensions between private religous experience and public religious expression; the problem of belief and unbelief; and the implications our religious beliefs have for our political organization. It is almost impossible to do justice to the richness of Taylor's thought in a short review.

Taylor's first task is to situate James within his own religious context. James inherited the strand of religious belief that was quintessentially Protestant -- with an emphasis on private feeling as against public expression. For James, the ultimate religious experience is private and fundamentally individual. This precludes James from fully grasping the types of religious expression that are more communally-based.

Taylor's second task is to reflect on James personal struggle with the question of belief and unbelief. In James' day a strong argument was being made that religious belief is intellectually dishonest. Taylor offers a good summary of James' defense of belief as a viable choice.

Finally, Taylor integrates James' thought with the question of how our religious belief interacts with our political structures. Taylor offers an invaluable historical narrative of the variety of relationships between religion and state that we have seen in the past. In doing so, he makes our current dilemmas much clearer. We are moving from a country that has a broad consensus in some sort of belief, but which allows individuals to join whatever church best gives expression to that experience, to a country in which there is no such broad consensus. If there is no shared understanding of the sacred, we are forced to ground our political structures in the purely human. It is not yet clear whether the new project will succeed, but in his reflections on the tensions between belief and unbelief and their relationship to our political organization, Taylor can only enhance our discussions as we move forward into this virgin territory.

Wittgenstein and Fin-de-Siecle Vienna.......2002-10-09

This book is a follow-up to Janik and Toulmin's earlier study, "Wittgenstein's Vienna". Unlike the earlier book, this book consists of a series of essays which are loosely connected by some transitional passages and melded into a book. In spite of its somewhat patchwork character, this book is a good study of Vienna and the influence of its writers, psychologists, and composers on Wittgenstein. A major goal of the book is to place Wittgenstein's thought in the context of European culture and thought rather than seeimg him solely within the context of the English (and American) analytical philosophy which he influenced profoundly.

Of the twelve chapters in the book, the first six have little to do with an analysis of Wittgenstein's thought. Rather they consist of expositions of certain turn-of-the century Viennese thinkers. Chief of these, and probably the most fascinating figure in the book is Otto Weininger who wrote a book called "Sex and Character" at the age of 23 just before his suicide. Weininger is known as an influence on Wittgenstein. He is also remembered, when he is thought of at all, for his anti-feminism and anti-semitism. Janik attempts to capture something of the complexity of Weininger's thought by placing him in the Kantian tradition and as a practitioner of what Janik terms "critical modernism."

There are also good discussions in the first half of the book of Arnold Schoenberg and, surprisingly to me Jacques Offenbach. These composers are juxtaposed with Weininger for their critical, deflatonary tendency in art and thought. They are presented as challenging the tendencies of turn-of-century Vienna towards an entertainment, theatrical culture -- shades of the present.

The second half of the book deals more directly with Wittgenstein. It discusses the thought of the logical positivists, of the philosopher of science Hertz, the satirist Karl Kraus (the focus of the earlier "Wittgenstein's Vienna), Freud, and the Viennese poet Trakl. Here again, Janik does not analyze Wittgenstein's thought in detail. Instead, he takes certain broad themes suggested by Wittgenstein such as the distinction between saying and showing, "the mystical", the nature of religous experience, and the living of the everyday and shows possible sources of these themes in the thinkers he examines. The material is interesting and valuable, probably more for the light it casts on the thinkers Janik discusses than for the light it casts on Wittgenstein.
