5 out of 5 stars The definitive guide to country-of-origin effect.......2001-10-22

Two of the world's leading country-of-origin academics have collaborated on this strong work on national image. It is not for the faint-hearted: Profs Jaffe and Nebenzahl have backed up their theories with hard, academically rigorous research. It is not a book for the casual marketer, but for a marketing expert that has an understanding of the qualitative and quantitative analyses of marketing research. Despite the academic foundation, the authors have filled this book with up-to-date examples, including the Rover sale by BMW and the revival of the `Buy New Zealand made' campaign in late 2000. There are useful lessons for identity professionals applying national branding to not only nations but any product or service making use of a country's image. Those charged with promoting nations will be advised to read this comprehensive and complete work.

5 out of 5 stars Now this is a great book.......2006-11-26

Out of all the books I've read this one is really unique. I thought it was just a simple book like all the others on technical analysis but there's quite a bit of content. I haven't been able to find anything similar on the internet or from other books. I'm glad I read it. I really understand what's going on in the not only the stock market but other market. I don't owe all my credit to this one book it's a must have for any serious investor. Prings a great teacher and his instuctional cd is great. People too often criticize great teachers because you can't get enough from them and that's not a downfall. I mean let's face it they get put down because some people can't keep up with profectionist. I have wore the pages off of my book from reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Great followup to intermarket technical analysis [murphy]!.......2002-08-22

I like this book a lot. It covers stock selection using a sector rotation and intermarket-analysis methodology. I think everyone who has read John Murphy's classic Intermarket Technical Analysis should go out and buy this book. Murphy gives you the theory, Pring gives you the execution -- both are needed.

Books offering instruction on how to succeed in business have drawn inspiration from diverse sources. Recent titles include Jesus CEO, The Kabbalah of Money, Zen and the Art of Making a Living, and of course, Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun. Now comes a volume of career tips loosely based on the ideas of Niccolò Machiavelli. A citizen of Florence during the height of the Renaissance, Machiavelli scandalized moralists with his now-classic work of political theory, The Prince. In it, he calmly describes and appears to justify the lies and cruelty of effective leaders. He may have been the world's first exponent of Realpolitik.

The New Machiavelli quotes liberally from The Prince and imitates its quaint style throughout. The book offers thoughtful perspectives on many modern business topics--starting a business, mounting an unfriendly takeover, managing people, controlling costs, handling public relations. Yet, Machiavellian it is not. Where the master endorsed dishonesty as though he had read Bill Clinton's popularity ratings, McAlpine warns would-be tycoons that cheaters never prosper. In The New Machiavelli, moralism lives.

Its imitation of Machiavelli's rhetorical style keeps it wonderfully free of modern management jargon. Occasionally its insights strike home with eloquence. Surely everyone in business has sometimes lain awake at night running spreadsheet numbers in his or her head. All will recognize the wisdom of McAlpine's advice, "Under no circumstances should the businessperson engage in mental arithmetic after sunset." --Barry Mitzman

        Book Description

Ignore the latest buzz about the kinder, gentler world of new age, team-based management. It's dog-eat-dog out there, and the sooner you realize it, the better. The New Machiavelli mines Machiavelli's The Prince for the timeless rules and stratagems that can help today's business rulers survive and prosper in the jungle of greed and treachery that is commerce. Alistair McAlpine enriches Machiavelli's text with scenarios from modern business, offering keen new insight into what motivates people. You'll learn the reasons why:
        * Loyalty is not a reliable factor in the workplace
        * Great power is held by the "little people" in a business
        * It is better to spread power than to centralize it
        * You should never believe your own publicity

Fail to read it at your peril.

"For most of my lifetime politicians have been trying to tell businessmen how to go about their tasks ... Both groups, however, will enjoy this shrewd commentary on Machiavelli's timeless principles of skullduggery."-Margaret Thatcher

"Anyone working in corporate America who doesn't find, read, and master Alistair McAlpine's amazing new guidebook to the art of politics in business may soon find themselves self-employed." -Charles Saatchi, Partner, M&C Saatchi

"Written in a style, like Machiavelli's own, at once didactic and charming... A work which is a standing satirical reproof to the various management manuals which promise corporate success."-Times Literary Supplement

5 out of 5 stars Another piece of the puzzle.......2000-06-19

For most of us, navigating the corporate and business world can be difficult, fustrating and even dangerous. Many people negotiate poor agreements with their bosses, clients and partners and in the end are hung out to dry. The perennial complaint of the casualties is that they just 'do not get it'.

If you were not lucky enough to be born into a business family or sent to Harvard B-school, then you probably will need to make a personal study of the topic. This is a book that I would include on your mandatory reading list.

With humor, European sensibilities and hardened, real-life experience, Mr McAlpine develops many parallels between Machiavelli's "New Prince" and today's business life. From the obliging employee to the use of contractors there are many examples that illuminate the undercurrents of the business world.

At my company, I have a reading list of 10 books that I found to be profound and a powerfull aid to life's business lessons. Every new employee gets these texts and this book is included in that list.

5 out of 5 stars Things that weren't taught in business school.......2000-06-06

I just finished this book. As a student of politics and a person who enjoys the art of politics there was little new to me in this book. What the book does do is summarize the basic Machiavellian points and directly apply them to various business scenarios. Had I know these things 20 years ago (before I learned them the hard way) sucess in my career would have been sooner and smoother. There are things in this book you will hate and things you will like. But they are all true. Whether you like politics or not, it is played every day in the office. For the informed, the game will be smoother and more sucessful. One thing however, don't share this book with your boss or co-workers. That would be very un-Machiavellian.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth reading.......1999-06-07

I found this book to be wholly absent of any kind of meaningful discussion of political behavior in the commercial environment. It provides a very cursory, feeble projection and application of Machiavelli's principles in a business context. A disappointing job at what could have been a powerful, interesting and timely discussion.

3 out of 5 stars A lively and interesting read from an unlikely source........1998-12-29

Take a classic text on the art of politics, add a dash of recent political experience (the negative kind) and apply the whole lesson to modern business issues - voila! Lord McAlpine explains it all to you. And he doesn't do a bad job of it, ( I write as a former CEO of a NYSE listed company.)

This book is not to be purchased as a text for the purpose of finding presciptive formulas to be applied to the daily problems facing the serious manager. The Harvard Business review purports to do a better job in that direction.

Rather, find a comfortable chair, light the fire, pour a glass of sherry and enter the world of Lord McAlpine - in this case a curious and unique combination of British politics, international celebrities, worldwide business interests and family inheritances.

In his book McAlpine finds great management insights in the works of Niccolo Machiavelli for application to modern business and draws all kinds of parallels to emphasize the similiarities. To this reader, not all the comparisons fit, but the author is an engaging writer and there is enough real life business and political experience in McAlpine's distinguished career to insure some sensible commentary with a bit of wit and humor. In a sense one learns more about McAlpine than Machiavelli. As luck would have it, he is an interesting fellow, too.

At this price buy one for yourself and a colleague and enjoy a great inside joke together. Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars Way beyond any "Instant book".......1998-11-27

As said, this book goes way beyond any of the so-called instant books, as in "get-rich-now" or in 5 minutes. There is nothing much to add besides the fact that "the right stuff" in this book is quite self explanatory to anyone who pays attention to what he is reading, of course.

What a surprise! With over 30 years of non profit fundraising, leadership and capital campaign consulting experience, I expected to gain little from this "how to" book which I was given to review. Boy, was I wrong.

Step by step, the authors outline and expand upon the key elements of a capital campaign; from determining whether or not your organization is ready for a campaign, to the best ways to celebrate and evaluate its conclusion.

I appreciated the amount of detail the authors included and their emphasis on organization, planning, leadership involvement and communications. They explore the basic process and then give in depth coverage of each step. In addition to sharing their own personal knowledge and expertise, they gathered much of their material by interviewing friends and clients who also had extensive capital campaign experience. They made the book more interesting, and dramatized the points they wanted to make, by the inclusion of short vignettes and quotes by volunteer and professionals, from actual campaign experiences.

Among the important subjects covered by the book are: how to select and use consultants, building the case for support, conducting a feasibility study, creating a campaign management plan, prospecting and prospect research, team building and leadership development, techniques of solicitation, campaign materials and public relations, events, thank yous, recognition, and much more. They even have a trouble shooting guide which focuses on what to do when things go wrong.

I highly recommend this handbook for volunteer leadership and staff alike (whatever their level of previous experience) who are considering a capital campaign. It is a book that should also be part of the libraries of campaign consultants. I have to admit that I picked up several great new ideas and techniques from reading the book.

Keep in mind that this is a "how to" book and will continue to be of value as a reference tool. The table of contents and index are complete and excellent in their detail.

I felt the authors could have put more emphasis on and expand the section on feasibility studies, or as I like to call them, pre-campaign assessments. Too many organizations try to avoid this important process thinking that they already know they need to know. They feel the pre-campaign study will take unnecessary time and resources. A good study not only sets the stage for a successful capital campaign and determines a realistic goal, but also provides invaluable information about the way the organization is perceived in the community, potential for major support, and extent to which leadership and staff are ready or capable to do what is necessary for success.

Organizational culture, leadership styles, personality management and what is often referred to as organizational politics are other areas which I felt deserved expanded coverage by the authors. Human factors, organizational history, and communication styles are all addressed in the book but are not given as extensive or in depth presentation as is warranted.

In summary, this book not only meets, but exceeds its very appropriate title: Capital Campaigns-Strategies that Work.

            Book Description

In recent years, growing attention has been focussed on real estate education. The objective of Real Estate Education Throughout The World: Past, Present and Future is to document the current status and perspectives of real estate education and the underlying research throughout the world. The intent is to inform students, academics and practitioners about the situation in the widest possible range of countries and to provide a foundation for the future of the real estate discipline. The structure of this monograph follows the organisation of the world-wide network of real estate societies. In Part 1, Stephen E. Roulac sets the framework for the other contributions. Part 2 contains 20 chapters that examine real estate education in Europe. Part 3 consists of two articles covering North America. Part 4 includes two chapters dealing with Latin America. In Part 5, 8 countries in Asia are examined. Part 6 contains two chapters covering the Pacific Rim. Finally, Part 7 focuses on Africa. This collection of papers is unique, in the sense that 50 authors have contributed to the monograph and 37 countries or regions in total are covered. The editor does not know of any comparable book.

4 out of 5 stars Gonna Kick It Root Down.......1999-12-19

This book is pretty cool. Its pretty much just a collection of articles about the boys and stuff like that so its not truly grand royal, but its worth having if you're a true Beastie Boys fan. Personally, I liked Rhyming and Stealing a lot better, but this book isn't all that bad. Lots of interesting little bits of information here and there.
