Book Description
The nineties have seen a fundamental shift in the policy and practice governing the pricing and marketing of petroleum products in Sub-Saharan Africa. Strict government control has been replaced by liberalization. Oil multinationals have been permitted once more to pursue their own strategies in importing and retailing petroleum products. In this volume, the consequences of this shift are examined in the context of two very different cases: Kenya, where full liberalization has been achieved, and Ethiopia, where the transition from state control to liberalization has just begun. A comparative analysis of these cases yields valuable insights into policies and strategies that African countries need to deploy to ensure lasting benefits from liberalization.

Take charge of your financial future.......2006-08-30
Reviewed by Joanne Benham for Reader Views (8/06)
When it comes to managing personal investments, most people leave the task to a portfolio manager, meekly accepting poor returns on their investments as the cost of dealing with a volatile market.
Scott Frush says this is not necessary. He has a simple, proven method to help everyone grow their wealth, utilizing sound asset allocation policies tailored to each individual's comfort zone.
There is so much information packed into this book, I found myself going back to reread portions as I progressed through the chapters. Frush begins by laying out the four phases of successful portfolio management, exploring each phase and explaining it in easy to understand language. One of the most important points he makes is that everyone should know how investment works, whether you manage it yourself or hire a professional. Another important, must-read section is when he shows you how to balance your portfolio to maximize profit and minimize risk.
This book is a must-read for anyone interested in taking charge of their financial future and willing to take the time to understand the methodology of asset allocation.
Key to Investing for Financial Security.......2006-06-28
"Optimal Investing" is an indispensable tool for the individual investor. The book provides basic principles and guidelines for protecting and growing your investments. The step by step easy to read text and checklists provide the reader with invaluable help for designing, constructing, monitoring, and rebalancing your optimal portfolio. The book opens with a definition an overview of asset allocation. Part two deals with applying asset allocation. Part three includes cornerstone principles of asset allocation, Model investment portfolios, rules for building your own optimal portfolio, and mistakes to avoid in managing your investments.
The format is user friendly. The summary definitions, highlighted within the text, and the excellent glossary, at the end of the book, make this a book your will refer to often. The logical progression of the material helps the reader in assimilating and in understanding the principles covered. The excellent charts, graphs, other visuals, and illustrations aid the reader in getting additional insights into successful investing strategy.
Frush has provided a complete index for the material in the book and his research is well documented. I especially enjoyed the quips and quotes on investing by well known investing personalities. I also found the chapter on obtaining professional counsel important in helping me review relationships with my own legal and investment advisiors.
Scott P. Frush, CFA, CFP, president of Frush Financial Group is well qualified to write this award winning book. His firm is well recognized for its success and integrity.
Good Information for a novice investor.......2006-05-04
Before Frush's book and another I recently read (the Intelligent Asset Allocator), I truly knew very little about asset allocation and the ins and outs of "passive investing". Frush gets you started by giving the reader the basics of asset allocation while carefully defining terms and explaining what he considers to be necessary asset allocation steps and procedures. He then builds up some areas where a novice investor can make a mistake, some of his rules ("golden rules") of investing and ends with an investing questionnaire that gives the reader a decent measure of their risk tolerance. There is some good suggestions for asset allocations for the reader who needs a little more specific hand-holding type advice. In addition, some explanation of advice on finding and working with a financial advisor is included. In summary, it is a resourceful book by itself and I would recommend it for someone wanting to get both theoritical and hands on practical approach to asset allocation and passive investing.
Announcement from the Publisher.......2005-06-08
Optimal Investing earns two "Book of the Year" honors, as follows:
- Named a Finalist for Book of the Year in Business and Economics by ForeWord magazine in April 2005.
See www.forewordmagazine.com
- Named a Semi-Finalist for Book of the Year in Finance/Investments/Economics by Independent Publisher magazine in May 2005.

Pass this one up for now........2005-03-14
The bulk of most self-published books, aka vanity press, end up being given away to friends, neighbors and, perhaps in this case, to potential clients. The book is simple, easy-to-read and well written, basically a primer. It is, however, a rather tedious rehash of the literature on asset allocation available free from various web sites.
I've read most of the asset allocation books available from Amazon. This book pales in comparison to Bernstein, Swedroe and Gibson in both style and content. If you have unlimited funds and time, certainly add Frush to your collection. But before you do that, select any of the above mentioned well-known authors for more interesting in-depth coverage of asset allocation.

Book Description
Despite popular belief, the problem of illegal child labor has not been remedied. The practice persists in the United States and even appears to be increasing. Levine, an acknowledged expert in the field, reveals the nature and magnitude of this "old" problem in today's economy. Levine explains that since 1981, there has been a relaxation in enforcement of federal child labor law provisions. He presents the complicated elements and troubling implications of a problem that has come to be ignored or overlooked in American society, focusing especially on matters of occupational health and safety. This book is important reading for the general public, as well as for scholars and policymakers involved with children's and labor issues in the United States. The United States has more of its children in the workforce than any other developed country. They are found in textile, jewelry, and machine shops in New York and New Jersey, in Southeast supermarkets operating meat-cutting machines and paper-box bailers, in Washington state selling candy door-to-door, and in farming operations throughout the country.

The purpose of Research in Governmental and Nonprofit Accounting is to stimulate and report high-quality research on a wide range of governmental and nonprofit accounting issues. A number of papers appearing in Volume 10 differ from much of our existing empirical work. The Bento and White and Copley and Seay studies use time-series data over relatively long intervals. In the case of the Sneed and Sneed and Elder, Kattelus, and Douthett studies, the authors use methodologies which have not been employed in previous studies in either the public or private sector. To the extent that these methodologies permit investigation of previously unexplored issues, the papers will be of interest to researchers outside of the governmental and nonprofit area. Governmental and nonprofit accounting represents an undeveloped research area which would benefit from rigorous examination. The government and not-f

Customer Reviews:
Very Helpful Book.......2004-01-27
After reading several of the "make millions overnight in real estate" books that are on the market, I bought this one. I enjoyed the individual examples given in this book and the down-to-earth advice.
This book WILL NOT make you rich overnight. It WILL describe how you can build a real income and true wealth over a reasonable period of time, with some patience and hard work.
Since buying this book a year ago, I have purchased five houses. It did take some time, it did take some money of my own (although not too much) and it did take some work to get the houses rented. Now I can hopefully pay the mortgages down a bit faster than normal and build equity, which will allow me to have some very valuable assets in my financial portfolio in the years to come.
This is a very helpful book and I recommend it to anyone who is considering the possibility of using single-family properties as an investment vehicle.
What is the biggest check you ever received?.......2003-03-13
Without a doubt the biggest check I have ever received has been from a real estate transaction. Here, Carlos shows us how simple the formula for wealth really is. What else can you buy that appreciates over time while you depreciate it each year?
Since reading this little book and attending the first seminar my wife and I have bought one house and have another in escrow. At least one a year, hopefully more when the deals are right...that is my plan for a retirement income in ten years!
A "must have" book for real estate investing.......2002-12-10
This is a "must read" for those getting into the real estate investing market. I found this book to be easy to read and even simpler to understand. Carlos weaves consistent, logical themes throughout the book which stick with the reader and provide a common sense framework for successful real estate investing. The use of real life examples was especially helpful for me as I am still a novice investor. It proved easier to apply his rules for investing on my own potential investments after understanding and learning from his own real life experiences.
The best part about this book is that it has taken the fear of investing in the real estate market out of the equation for me. I am now quite motivated to jump into the home market and buy my first property with the information I have gleamed from this book. The book covers all of the initial fears you can experience about real estate investing and tackles them all. I highly recommend it!
Bulletproof Home Investing!!.......2002-09-18
During the 1990's I worked a as Realtor for Carlos Royal at Sea Royal Realty in Encinitas, CA. My desk was literally ten feet away from Carlos, so I literally watched him buy dozens of homes and have been in some of residences illistrated in the book.
The "Wow" book is all true, and can make anyone a millionaire who reads and follows Mr Royal's system. His information, techniques, and insights, are helpful to both neophite and can "tune-up" the experienced investor.
I have invested in single family homes for over 15 years. After reading the "Wow" book I much better comprehend the market forces and nuances effecting appreciation and market trends.
This is a well written must read for anyone serious about building wealth through SFR and Condo investing!!!

What We Really Know.......2001-10-11
I met Charlie Lang in January of 1997. Since then, he's become one of my closest friends and favorite musicians, and I was curious about this book. I bought it in spring of 2000, and I just melted. I thought I knew Charlie, but I couldn't believe it when I read about what he went through. Whether it's exaggerated, or not I do think it describes in great detail a brutal mental health system that many have to survive, rather than embrace. I have a healthy respect for people who have been through such a hell as described in this book, and I believe Charlie deserves every ounce of respect he gets, and more. It takes major guts to exist in such a deep mental pit for such a long time. My hat's off to Charlie Lang
Not as promising as it seems.......2000-01-13
I've read all the books in this series and this is the one I liked the least. This can be either a good or bad thing. I found myself not liking Charlie much, but that fact that it was Charlie who I didn't like is impressive. His personality is IN this book and if you like Charlie as a person, you'll like the book.
A roller coaster ride through the mind of a creative genius!.......1999-05-03
The sounds of joy, angst, torment, love and desires jump off the pages of this book! It is being used by actors in acting classes- a fabulous read, and great work for actors who are looking for characters with tremendous vocal range and emotional depth!

I'm No Hero: Journeys of a Holocaust Survivor is a memoir by Henry Friedman, a Polish Jew who escaped internment in the concentration camps with help from a Christian family, who hid Friedman in the loft of a barn for 18 months. He was 14 years old when he went into hiding, and he remembers his flight for safety from the German bombings of Poland this way: "[I saw] buildings burning, parts of human bodies, dead and wounded animals. I was mesmerized by a wounded horse. His blood was bubbling from his stomach, and my mother put her hand over my eyes and dragged me away." When the family was liberated by the Russians, Friedman grew up fast. He became involved in black market trading in a displaced persons camp in Austria, and he began seducing women with great regularity. He moved to America in 1949, and returned to Poland to visit the family who protected him in 1988. His primary avocation, in retirement, is speaking to school children about surviving the Holocaust. Friedman is not a scholar, and his prose is workmanlike. But his book--even considering its detailed reports of his off-color adventures--will be most profitably read by adolescents and young people. It is a harsh, tough, simply-told story about growing up in very difficult circumstances, about forgiving oneself for moral failure, and about accepting second (and third, and fourth) chances with grace. --Michael Joseph Gross
Customer Reviews:
amazing life journey.......2000-08-03
Henry Friedman's life story is played out against the horrors of the holocaust and how one teenager survived with some family members, and ultimately triumphed in America. His life as a hidden teenager is a riveting account of sheer dogged determination to survive under horrendous conditions. The reader is enthralled as he survives one episode to the next. Considering how honest the author is about his growing sexuality, this book should be made into a Hollywood movie. But it is ultimately a tale of the triumph of the human spirit to survive! A must read in any collection on holocaust survivors.
Other books of a similar theme include Harold Werner's "Fighting Back"(although Werner was older and was a partisan, which Henry wasn't), Larry Orbach's "Soaring Underground"(although Orbach lived in Nazi Germany), and Thomas Blatt's "From the Ashes of Sobibor" (although Blatt's adventure included stays in the concentration camp prior to his escape/hiding)

A Powerful book about survival, redemption and hope.......2006-06-16
For me this book was truly a Godsend. Because I was never aware of the complete history of my family's experience during the holocaust, I always hungered to know the truth.
When I recieved the book, "I'm no Hero" written by my Uncle, it filled in a part of my heritage that I truly needed to understand. I could not put the book down and to think that my Uncle has now dedicated the last years of his life re living this horrific part of his past to educate students all over the country I can only say, while his book is entitled "I'm no Hero" in my book he is.

Barrow Alaska from A to Z!
ASIN: 0965482626 |
Book Description
Biography of eccentric entrepreneur Fran Tate who went 300 miles above the Arctic Circle to open the world's northernmost Mexican restaurant, Pepe's North of the Border.
Customer Reviews:
Practically a must-read if you're going to visit Barrow.......2007-07-10
This book lets you get to know Fran Tate, a character who has had a lot of impact on the way Barrow has developed in the past couple of decades.
Fran's near-maniacal devotion to hard work and quality service is every bit as endearing as her complete lack of pretentiousness. If life were a rodeo, instead of sitting in the stands I believe that Fran would run out, jump on the biggest steer, get thrown off, jump right back on and repeat until the steer just got too tired to buck her off anymore. I wish I had read this book before I went to Barrow, it's unlikely I'll ever get a chance to go back and meet Fran in person.
If I had never been to Barrow, I'd probably only rate the book 2 1/2 or 3 stars, though. It's mildly interesting on its own, but if you've been to Barrow (or plan to go there) you'll have a much better appreciation for the story. As I have been there, I give the book four stars.
The Tale of a True Alaska Character.......2002-10-23
Fran Tate has lived a truly amazing and interesting life. This book tells her story in detail, and what a story it is! Fran is a true character, and a really neat lady (I know her) who has worked very hard to build sucessful businesses and provide service to her adopted community. Barrow is a special and different place and Fran fits in well here. Her story is a good example of how hard work, creativity and sheer guts can get you where you want to go. It is also very funny! How can you resist someone who runs a business like Elephant Pot Sewage Haulers (before the town got sewers everyone had holding tanks or "honey buckets" and someone had to "clean up your act" as the slogan went) and sells the T-shirts in her restaurant to boot? Not only that, she does a great jazz show on the local radio station and sponsors (& shoots, with her attorney/pyrotechnician) the New Year's fireworks.
Pepe's North of the Border is a true Barrow experience, and really, the food isn't bad (I've had far worse in the Lower 48). There's always free pie & coffee to local seniors. The cooks are Mexican, too--Fran even wound up marrying one once at least in part to avoid his being deported. If all this sounds interesting, get the book!
Corny.......2001-12-26
As much as I loved eating at Pepe's, this book is really fluff, but it is very light reading and you will enjoy her story. You will appreciate it even more if you have been to Barrow and especially if you get to meet Joe the Water Man.
FROM ONE WHO KNOW'S PEPE'S AND IT'S OWNER.......2001-12-14
I have read Fran's book before but I don't own a copy. I lived in Barrow for 3 years so I know first hand about that which Fran writes. However, as I was the district librarian for the school district my life wasn't quite as hard as Fran's. The food at Fran's probably wouldn't be eaten anywhere else, certainly not in the "Lower 48" and certainly not for the price one had to pay.
Getting back to Fran, she tells it like it is, and she is the very colorful, local figure that she portrays. For those unfortunate souls who have never been to Alaska, let alone Barrow, this book is interesting and full of some strange but true stories.
This book is for people who love to read about people who are "different" and who are probably braver and more interesting than the rest of us.
"Guaranteed to make readers laugh out loud.".......1999-02-03
Review appeared August 1997 Alaska Magazine
In 1975 Fran Tate tried to get McDonalds to open a franchise in Barrow, Alaska. The company, however, was interested only in a town with at least 50,000 and Barrow's population was 3,500. So Tate opened her own Mexican restaurant instead. "Tacos on the Tundra" is a lively and sensibly organized biography. It traces Tate's triumph over her lonely and impoverished childhood through sheer hard work. Author Lyn Kidder liberally quotes her subject's colorful, down-home speech. "Don't tell 'em I m a floozy," says Tate, an allusion to five failed marriages. This executive with an engineering degree scrubbed toilets to pay her bills. "People don't want to struggle that much anymore," she said. "They want to be president of the company, second day on the job." Hollywood almost made a sitcom from her life, a few years before the television show "Northern Exposure." She's too unbelievable a character for fiction, but this real-life book is guaranteed to make readers laugh out loud, and at the same time give them an insight into life in America's northernmost city.

Book Description
Charles Wuorinen: A Bio-Bibliography is a chronicle, a lexicon, a manual, a narrative, and a testament to the life and work of an American musical genius. The work contains a biography, discography, interview, comprehensive listing of works and detailed roster of performances, and almost 1,200 annotated citations of writings about the music of this important composer. The oral history component--the interview--is the foundation of the book in that it expresses the composer's philosophy of music and of life and serves as a contrast to the many annotations featuring critical commentary on his music. No one even remotely connected with contemporary music and the arguments and discussions thereof should be without this book.
