    Book Description

The number of advertisements is steadily increasing around the world as affluence grows and more economies shift to a market system. One way to ensure that these ads are truthful, accurate, and wholesome is to rely on industry self-regulation. Through it, peers set up standards of good advertising practice and enforce them as an essential complement to government regulation. With the global expansion of advertising, the tasks of self-regulation have grown, together with some doubts regarding the industry's willingness and ability to develop and enforce ethical guidelines. This unique global study of the subject explores the spread of this social-control institution through a discussion of its relative strengths and weaknessess, a reporting of several surveys conducted by the author, and thirty-eight country profiles prepared with the assistance of practitioners around the world. The first chapter defines self-regulation, analyzes its pros and cons, relates it to government regulation, investigates its structures and processes, discusses the involvement of non-industry members in its functioning, evaluates its effectiveness, and considers its recent spread around the world in the light of new developments such as the completion of the European Common Market. A second section reports the key findings of surveys conducted by the author for the International Advertising Association in 1986 and 1988-89. The last part offers profiles of advertising self-regulation as practiced in thirty-eight countries--including such leading nations as Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. An appendix includes samples of key codes as well as various evaluations of the practice of advertising self-regulation around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginner investors .......2006-11-03

If you are like many Americans, many of the concepts and processes surrounding investing are a mystery. This book makes it very clear what investing is, spells out the risks as well as rewards, and identifies strategies for successful management of a personal strategy. While the explanations are simple, they are not condescending.

The book helped me change my perceptions of money and financial security. How? It pointed out fallacies I had about mundane matters such as spending habits. Further, there are tips and suggestions for defining and achiveing personal goals.

4 out of 5 stars Great place to begin.......2005-01-31

This book is a great place for the beginning investor. In fact, it oughta be required reading for anyone about to get married. It gives the basics on everything from retirements accounts (of all types) to buying a home, to creating your own financial plan, even advice on divorce. Just about any basic information on finances that a person would need can be found here. Someone looking for something a little deeper might do well to skim the book to glean usable info and then to find something a little more specific.

As a side note, if you've read this title, skip reading "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Investing Like a Pro," as these two books are essentially the same.

5 out of 5 stars Yellow Brick Road to Financial Security.......2004-01-29

Most Americans can relate to one or several of the following concerns: the acquisition, lack, loss or continued possession of financial security. Simply, the CIG to Savvy Investing has altered my perception of financial well-being as it relates to my life.

I am the son of a financial consultant. I grew up being beaten about the head with money management techniques, to the point I became deaf. A friend suggested that I try out Savvy Investing in order to 'get out' of the rut in which I felt I trapped. I purchased this book in early fall of 2003 and quickly began changing negative spending and re-crafting saving habits because Ed Koch and Debra DeSalvo do such a wonderful job of describing financial pitfalls and solutions to everyday problems.

The book helped me change my perceptions of money and financial security. It helped me uncover what I refused to see in my spending habits. It helped me focus my efforts and get serious about saving by providing helpful hints and easily attainable personal goals.

The simple explanations, of what I previously considered complex financial options, allowed me to 'see' a way out and to plan an attack for getting ahead. In October of 2003, I was sure that I was two years away from purchasing a house. Last week, I put money down on a new home. This book helped me see that I was in a far better position than I believed myself to be, and it opened my eyes to financial opportunities around me.

I highly recommend this book for parents to send with their children off to college. I wish I knew going into college what this book taught me over the last few months. I also suggest the book to anyone that feels stuck or burdened by money. Tax time is a great time to read Savvy Investing, because you will quickly understand the benefits of changing your habits. The book will point out tax pitfalls and suggest ways to improve your utilization of YOUR money that you might be throwing away to the Feds. The tips and warnings are invaluable and the suggestions can quickly teach you how to subtly change your spending habits, without infringing on your perceived happiness, while creating future wealth and financial stability.

The book offers accessible, adaptable strategies for dealing with a broad spectrum of nonprofit concerns, such as increasing attAndance at special events, stepping up board involvement in fundraising, and handling negative press. Throughout the book, Reiss poses the practical questions readers need to answer in order to apply the case study strategies to their own organizations' experience.

                      Customer Reviews:

                      3 out of 5 stars A First-Aid Kit: Not Comprehensive Medical Teatment.......2001-02-21

This book is a collection of forty-six 3-page vignettes arranged into chapters on major challenges facing a nonprofit: marketing, public relations, making a special event work well, board issues, soliciting corporate donors, etc. The stories, many drawn from New York City-area nonprofits, are designed to show how the profiled organization faced a challenge, planned a response, and achieved a result. Challenge, plan, and result -- "CPR."

Each vignette uses the "CPR" format, followed by "questions to ask" (if you're facing the same challenge), "lessons learned," and "last word," usually a one-sentence summation of the "moral" of the story.

All kinds of organizations are profiled, and it was fun to see CharityChannel regulars as Lynn Shaftic-Averill among the experts sought for their expertise and "war stories." "The Pig that Saved the 'Y'" chronicles the success of the YWCA of the Tonawandas in staving off financial collapse. They used a board member's connection with a local nonprofit theater to arrange for a benefit showing of the movie "Babe" as a joint fundraiser, and the 'Y' was saved from serious and imminent financial danger. The film showings are now annual fundraising events.

Like the first-aid kit on the cover, the book contains a lot of tools that are specific to a situation. Just as you wouldn't use all the tools in the first aid kit at the same time, the book is best read sporadically, almost as a reference manual, when you're looking for help or inspiration.

Unfortunately, also like the first-aid kit, the book is unable to provide comprehensive relief, or information, for the patient/reader seeking assistance. To say that the book uses a "band-aid" approach sounds pejorative, but it really isn't. Band-aids are important tools, as are many of the stories in the book. However, people buying this book believing that they'll find the answers for an organization in trouble will be disappointed.

CPR for Nonprofits is a good "ready-reference" book for stimulating ideas and brainstorming, best read in small doses over time. If symptoms persist, you'll need to look elsewhere for additional help.

                        Book Description

The world today is a complex place, and quality of life—yours and your familyÂ's—is more important than ever. The chance of getting saddled with pitfalls has never been greater. Congestion, crime, greed, immorality, and indecency top the list of ills that exist in far too many locales in this country. Overwhelming bureaucracy, unseen loopholes, and outright deceit are valid concerns in any real estate transaction. You simply can't afford to buy a home blindly. To avoid the pitfalls that plague far too many places, you need to arm yourself with as much information as possible. Safe & Sound—How to Buy A Safe, Private, Quiet Home is designed to do just that. Written by a veteran law enforcement officer, Safe & Sound is chock full of vital home buying information that doesnÂ't exist elsewhere. In four vital categories— security, road and traffic safety, nuisances, and catastrophe precautions—Safe & Sound identifies hundreds of quality of life variables involved in the purchase of a home, including a host of things you won't notice, your real estate agent wonÂ't think of or inform you about, and the sellers of the home won't—and aren't required—to tell you.

                          5 out of 5 stars A Holocaust Survivor's Story - A Child Separated From his Parents .......2006-09-29

There is something very special and moving in the telling of author Benjamin Hirsch's life story that is much deeper than just his own memoirs; it is like he is here to remind all of us about events that happened long ago. In his well written and inspirational book, "Hearing A Different Drummer: A Holocaust Survivor's Search For Identity", he becomes another voice for the victims of the Nazi extermination camps. It is clear that his voice is needed in today's world that tries to forget, hide or worse yet--to deny the holocaust ever happened.

Hirsch tells us about his childhood in Germany and how his father was arrested in his own home and taken away by the SS and put in a work camp. His mother sends off her older children--three boys and two girls to France to remain in hiding and eventually to find their way to America. His mother keeps her two youngest children with her so the family is broken apart in many ways and not just physically. The author finds out after the war that both his parents and his little sister and brother have been killed in the Nazi Extermination Camps.

Hirsch ends up in Atlanta, Georgia joining the rest of his surviving siblings. He is raised in a supportive Jewish community but he is an orphan none the less and there is all the emotional pain and loss of not knowing what happened to his family. This story is heart wrenching even though the author himself understates the obvious emotions that must have troubled him in his youth or even today.

The bulk of the book focuses on the author's U.S. Army experiences in Germany and his personal search for what happened to his family. In the course of discovering his family history, he reconnects with his Jewish roots and rediscovers his spiritual life. It is a touching account of a young man alone in Europe finding his old country of Germany. However, it is not a home coming since he remembers so little; having been just 6 years old when he was sent off by train before the out break of WWII.

There are some touching moments of reconnections with others from his past in almost miraculous ways and he reunites with the French couple that took him into their home some man long years before. There is so much more that I wanted to know about this man and his life that he left closed or veiled for public reading; it is my hope that his next book takes us on an inner journey to learn more about this most interesting man who also designed memorials to Jewish holocaust victims.

I found myself on a personal level with his story for two reasons. One reason is that I have a six year old grandson and wondered what life would be like if he was suddenly taken away and sent to another country never to see his parents or grandfather again. The other reason deals with my wonderful experiences in Atlanta in 1968 with an Army buddy from Fort Benning. He had relatives there and had asked me to join him for some Jewish holidays with them. I was accepted into their home and at their temple for services and ate at their table afterwards. I was emotionally made to feel so welcomed and loved. I felt like family. That memory still makes me feel, warm inside remembering it.

The only negative note from that visit was when one of the relatives told me about some of the discrimination that they had to deal with even in the late 1960's in the south. It seems socially there were still some major barriers to clubs, organizations and even employment. It blew me away because I never thought that was an issue before. It was never a part of my world. They seemed very surprised that I joined them in their temple as well. But to me, there is but one God and all temples and churches are places of worship so I saw no conflict. After all, didn't Jesus to the temple services.

This book will make you think, feel and have emotions. It also has some lighter moments and is an easy to read book. If you were only going to read one book this coming year make it this one!

The MWSA gives this book its top rating of FIVE STARS! I also give it my personal endorsement!

                          4 out of 5 stars A wonderful read.......2000-07-13

Fascinating story of a man with a quest. Not only is it interesting to try to understand the mindset of a holocaust survivor, but also paints a very real picture of what it was like to be in the US Army in the 1950's.

5 out of 5 stars A well written contribution to Judaic & Holocaust studies........2000-07-05

In Hearing A Different Drummer: A Holocaust Survivor's Search For Identity, Benjamin Hirsch offers a riveting memoir that related how as a nine year old refugee he first arrived in 1941 at New York Harbor. He, along with his two older sisters and two older brothers, had been sent away from Frankfurt am Main, Germany, by his mother to avoid the holocaust that was descending on the Jewish communities throughout Nazi occupied Europe. During the years of the Korean War Hirsch was an American solider stationed in Germany, where he discovered the horrific fate of his parents and younger siblings. Hirsch writes with candor and vivid description, in introducing us to the life of his uncle Philipp Auerbach, who recorded German atrocities that are still denied today -- that soup was made from some of the bodies of the murdered Jews. Hearing A Different Drummer is an important, exceptionally well written contribution to 20th Century Judaic and Holocaust studies.

A child escapes from Germany with 4 of his siblings and finds his way to America. This is his history including joining the army even though he is still a German citizen, and afterwards becoming a prize winning architect.

5 out of 5 stars The Jewish Discovery of Islam.......2001-08-06

Starting in 1976, Edward Said has argued that Western scholars of the Middle East are continuing "an unbroken tradition in European thought of profound hostility, even hatred, toward Islam," and he singles out Bernard Lewis as their de facto leader. Strangely, when Lewis in turn argued in favor of the Orientalist tradition - that unique effort by members of one civilization to understand the outside world in depth - his colleagues with near-unanimity abandoned him. Still, the battle is not entirely over. While Lewis himself retired from the fray, his highly talented ex-student, Martin Kramer continues the not-entirely-lonely effort to defend several centuries of Western scholarship on the Middle East.

In The Jewish Discovery of Islam, Kramer takes as his starting point several comments by Lewis about the important role of Jews in developing nineteenth-century European attitudes toward the Middle East and Islam, then asks: Did Jews actually made a distinct contribution to the Western discovery of Islam? His reply - and that of his nine contributing authors - is a resounding yes. He and they argue that nineteenth-century Jews found in the Muslim world a model directly relevant to their current situation. Looking about for arguments to bolster their case to join the mainstream of European life, they pointed to Islamic civilization at its height as to show the benefits of integrating Jewry. This in turn meant they had to prove that Baghdad and Cordoba represented peaks of human achievement.

These "pro-Islamic Jews" routed the opposition and their empathetic, sympathetic approach rules the roost today. Kramer's book has many implications: By showing that the main Orientalist tradition derived far more from sympathetic Jewish approach than from the hostile Christian one, it devastates Said's grand theory of Orientalism. It establishes that recent Western attitudes to the outside world - such as the Third-Worldism of the 1960s and the multiculturalism of today - owe their existence in good part to the success of the pro-Islamic Jews' long-ago efforts of humanize Islam. Muslims eventually also picked up on the romantic Jewish myths about Islam and made these a standard part of their own self-image. Finally, Muslims now living in the West owe much to the Jewish scholars who laid the groundwork for their finding an at least partially hospitable reception.
