Service Asia.......2000-05-18
A God sent! For years I have been hunting for a book which could be put into the hands of my executive colleagues engaged in extending our service operation in Asia Pacific. This has been a frustrating process as most books in the market neither understand the Asia-specific challenges nor offer achievable benchmarks which our Regional executives could relate and aspire to. Then I discover this book. The reason this is a god sent to us is in its successful distillation of the best that is available in the literature, and the best that is practiced in this Region, and integrate both into a robust framework( the service temple) and fascinating language for our busy executives. Eversince our top management has endorsed this book and put a copy into the hands of each executive through a workshop, the payoffs have been substantial. Our colleagues could now speak the same language, and could collectively and consciously experiment with developing and formalizing our unique approach to service excellence. This translate into demonstratable imporvement and bottomline result. Truly useful book !
Too simple for serious readers.......2000-02-29
I bought this book because it promises insights into the great service companies in Asia and I thought I could learn a lesson or two from such leading companies. I was to be dissapointed.
First of all, the lessons depicted in the book were very simple. I believe most marketing students would have studied them at some point during their university days.
Secondly, the book seems to be a summary of all the current theories of management and marketing. There was no real insight.
Thirdly, while the book's title is Service Asia, the companies are mainly in Hong Kong with a couple in Singapore, Philippines and Thailand. There was no mention of service excellent companies in Japan, South Korea, India, China or Taiwan. Without representation in such important countries, the book cannot be truly about excellent service companies in Asia.
I can only say that the authors spent a lot of time on their research. They have interviewed many people as can be seen from the abundance of quotes in the book.
They have also tried to provide a framework for excellent service. They termed it as the sevice temple. However, I am of the opinion that the framework is still basic and not extremely useful for practitioners or students.
I recommend this book for people who have no knowledge of customer service and wants to have a quick overview of what customer service is all about. For more serious readers, this book is only useful for the quotes from executives of top firms like DHL and Singapore Airlines.

Bishop T.D. Jakes invites readers to "pack three bags" for the journey of life: finances, family, and faith. On this three-legged stool rests his formula for success and the basis for the book The Great Investment. His concepts are simple, yet solid. On family: "Accept your mate's differences." "Compromise." "Teamwork." "Be grateful." On finances: "Get a receipt." "Learn to distinguish between your needs and your wants." "Don't waste your hard-earned money on the lottery or games of chance; invest it instead." On faith: "Divine guidance is an invaluable resource. Without it, you are like a sailor at sea unable to find his way because he has no compass on his ship."
Jakes is a familiar figure to many, hosting a weekly television program on the Trinity Broadcasting Network and Black Entertainment Television. The New York Times recently named him one of the nation's most influential ministers, and many of his books, including Woman, Thou Art Loosed and The Lady, Her Lover, and Her Lord, have found a wide readership.
In The Great Investment, Jakes challenges Christians to hang on to their Christian ideals, yet still build a bridge to those who live less-than-ideal lives. He endeavors to make faith and biblical wisdom accessible and relevant to those both inside and outside the church who are seeking practical help for stabilizing their lives. A lofty goal, and with his large audience, one that will hopefully succeed. --Cindy Crosby

Amazing.......2007-08-24
T.D. Jakes is a wonderfully blessed man. In reading this book you know that he is touched by God and highly favored. This book was AMAZING. I looking forward to reading more by him. This book is well worth the five stars I gave it and I highly recommened it. I was touched, moved and motivated to get myself in order (Faith, Family, and Finances!!!!).
TD Jakes is deceived.......2006-02-14
TD Jakes is deceived by wealth... see Jesus' parable of the sower. He is right to say that we should avoid both extreme's (poverty and wealth), but then he goes into how we can get a 100-fold financial blessing.
I'm very happy to see him expose the false teaching of the prosperity teachers. But how can TD Jakes live in mansions and have luxury cars when he knows his brothers/sisters in Africa (for one example) are dying of starvation? Truly, his conscience has been seared as with a hot iron:
1 Timothy 4:2
Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
Example, pg. 69:
"Money is to serve you, and you should serve God by using it according to His plan."
How is living in luxury, when our brothers and sisters are dying, spending money according to God's plan? That's what TD Jakes does; live in luxury.
Please, learn the truth from our Lord Jesus. He taught what stewardship is, in the "Parable of the Talents." Ten percent doesn't belong to God, as TD Jakes says,,, 100% does! We are to manage all of God's money for the kingdom, and only live on what we need (not want). That's the lifestyle of Jesus and His disciples.
TD Jakes is teaching people to be deceived by wealth. Those who are deceived don't know it, or else they'd refuse to be decieved. TD Jakes is deceived... just look at his lifestyle and seared conscience. What will he say when he meets his brothers and sisters in heaven, the ones who have died from starvation because TD bought a new luxury vehicle or another vacation home?
Insightful, Scriptural, Practical ! ! !.......2004-07-02
T. D. Jakes describes life as a journey in which some people pack more than is necessary for the most productive trip. He wisely advises carry three bags, faith, family, and finances. I think it is no accident that he arranges them in that order either. Faith is needed for this life and preparation for the next. Family is something you can take with you, provided they share the faith and finances encompasses effective stewardship principles that reveal what you have to show for your existence.
Although each of these subjects is familiar, Bishop Jakes sheds new insight in each of the three arenas. He builds to a climax in his teaching on Romans 8:28-30. It is worth the price of the book just to read what he says in the few pages devoted to that topic alone! He will build your faith because he speaks from the perspective of a credible source, i.e., it's lived it.
This book is comprehensive in that he covers both Old and New Testament teachings on the topics. He includes personal experiences. Bishop Jakes is even confident enough to be vulnerable in places, not one who claims in a phoney way to have all the answers. His advice is practical, doable, workable. I highly recommend this book.
Kudos to Bishop Jakes!.......2001-12-25
Another masterpiece by Bishop Jakes! I was particularly impressed by his practical teachings related to financial matters. He takes a look at the two extremes - poverty and abundance. Rather than teaching 'pie in the sky', he shares the importance of financial responsibility by maintaining a budget and using credit wisely. He goes on further to discuss saving, investing and sowing into good ground. It's very inspirational to hear messages from the clergy that go beyond `naming it and claiming it', but rather teaches that there is a part that we must play in setting our financial affairs in order. Kudos to Bishop Jakes!!
Woman Thou Art Loosed,The Devotional.......2001-07-31
What a wonderful book. I bought this book when I neeed it the most. As a woman, I am my worst critic, and at times I feel I am not worthy of the wonderful things in life because of my past. T.D.Jakes words describe how God loves us regardless of our color, our pasts, the shape of our body, or our hair color. Its the size of our heart and the beauty within that is the most important to God. I learned through his words to accept myself as I am. I am truly grateful I have found T.D.Jakes! I realize now that I am a masterpiece to God. What a wonderful thought that brings !!
Thank you, Karen Michelle
Book Description
Good Intentions Aside addresses the theoretical and practical issues of recognizing and responding to ethical dilemmas. By looking at numerous instances in which individuals face tough moral choices at work, Laura Nash provides managers with real-world problems that make clear the link between good ethics and good business. She shows managers how to get back in touch with their commonsense standards of integrity by providing a set of conceptual tasks and practical questions that help them take a fresh look at their own business thinking. Drawing on extensive interviews with scores of managers, Nash identifies the two primary reasons why well-intentioned people do not always maintain high personal standards in the workplace: traditional management assumptions about the goals of business, and habitual patterns of problem solving that tend to obstruct ethical thinking. The solution, according to Nash, is for managers to adopt a new framework that focuses on providing value to others. By making social relationships the top priority in decision making, managers can act on their good intentions without sacrificing strong economic performance.

Enjoyable Reading.......2001-05-30
I found this book extremely helpful in getting started in real estate investment. It included helpful tips and the chapters flowed together in a comprehensive guide. Definitely worth the money. I have spent more $$ on other books that were nowhere near as helpful. I highly recommend this to other people who are interested in getting started in flipping properties. As you can tell from his successful real estate investing, he obviously practices what he preaches. This book isn't meant to be a complete guide to real estate investing. You need to do your own homework, too, which the other reviewers obviously have not done.
Includes lots of stories. Lacks strategy........1999-06-30
Would not recommend for the novice investor. Lacks the guidance that is needed in the beginning of real estate investment. Not informative at all.
Save your money.......1999-06-09
I picked this book up because I liked the title. House flipping for fun and profit. This is what I do for a living and have been very successful at it. I believe that you get what you pay for. $11.96 for the book and $11.96 worth of useful information, and that is being very generous. If my daughter hadn't accidentally spilled grape juice on the book, I would ask for my money back.

Locating East Asia in Western Art Music (Music Culture)
ASIN: 0875861792 |
Book Description
Western classical music has become as Chinese as Peking Opera, and it has woven its way into the hearts and lives of ordinary Chinese people. This lucidly written account traces the biographies of the bold visionaries who carried out this musical merger. Rhapsody in Red is a history of classical music in China that revolves around a common theme: how Western classical music entered China, and how it became Chinese. China's oldest orchestra was founded in 1879, two years before the Boston Symphony. Since then, classical music has woven its way into the lives of ordinary Chinese people. Millions of Chinese children take piano and violin lessons every week. Yet, despite the importance of classical music in China - and of Chinese classical musicians and composers to the world - next to nothing has been written on this fascinating subject. The authors capture the events with the voice of an insider and the perspective of a Westerner, presenting new information, original research and insights into a topic that has barely been broached elsewhere. "Every chapter is as exiting as it is revealing. The book is thoroughly researched, with superb bibliography. I am ecstatic; my students will be electrified." - Clive M. Marks, Chairman, The London College of Music, Trestee, Trinity College of Music and The London Philarmonic Orchestra
Customer Reviews:
From Ricci and Paci, via Mao and Mozart, to Tan Dun.......2005-03-14
"How and why did Western classical music develop such deep roots [in China]? This is a question that we [Sheila Melvin and Jindong Cai] have often asked ourselves-and been asked-and it is this that we set out to answer in writing Rhapsody in Red: How Western Classical Music Became Chinese."
This very readable short history of western classical music in China is more thoroughly structured than a "rhapsody," not just about music and certainly more colorful than just "red." The three most interesting chapters, in fact, cover the pre-communist era. It is generally known that the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci introduced Euclidean geometry to Chinese mathematicians in 1607, but did you know that he also presented Ming Emperor Wan Li with a clavichord? The chapter "Musical Voyages" tells the incredible story of this somewhat politically motivated adventure. In the beginning the Jesuits were sabotaged by the corrupt imperial eunuch Ma Tang and later, after the Emperor had finally received the gift, Father Pantoia, himself an amateur musician, had to instruct palace eunuchs in the art of playing the clavichord. Emperor Wan Li happened to be "on strike" and was unwilling to receive any guests. But he did seem curious enough to hear the sound of the clavichord and thus was the first "piano" recital in China given by palace eunuchs.
During the reign of Qing Emperor Kangxi, Western music had become far less exotic to the monarch. He had taken lessons and "supposed himself to be an excellent musician" though he probably "knew nothing." "There was a cymbal or spinet in almost every apartment [of the palace], but neither he nor his ladies could play upon them; sometimes indeed with one of his fingers he touched a note, which was enough, according to the extravagant flattery practised at the court of China, to throw the by-standers into ecstasies of admiration [...]." Needless to say, these extravaganzas had no musical influence beyond the palace.
"The Best Orchestra in the Far East" is another very interesting chapter dealing with the pre-communist era. It tells the early history of the (then) exclusively non-Chinese Shanghai Municipal Orchestra under the leadership of the Italian pianist Mario Paci and also describes the beginning days of the Shanghai Conservatory. The exotic mix of Eastern and Western, that decadent yet energetic cultural atmosphere of Shanghai during the "Golden Twenties" and early Thirties has always fascinated me and this chapter is giving a vivid portrait of persons and events. Yet it is quite objective in its judgment of the period, which has sometimes been hyped as the non-plus-ultra in cultural refinement but was more often denounced as bourgeois and racist in politically tainted distortions. The picture that emerges after reading this chapter is, that the Western music culture in Shanghai at that time was indeed dominated by foreigners. But it was also the cradle of all those important Chinese musicians who became the founding fathers of China's present music life, of all those early composers conductors, educators, organizers, etc. and it seems that only this fundamental exposure to the vibrancy of Western music gave them the humanity to survive those later horrors of the "Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution."
I recommend the chapter "The Cultural Revolution" not so much for the description of the miserable yet popular model operas that were produced at that time under the supervision of Jiang Qing (Mao Zedong's wife) but rather for the touching stories about the individual fates of various musicians who either became victims or used various tactics to survive. At the Shanghai Conservatory alone 17 professors and spouses committed suicide. Some others, like the Conservatory's "hard-boned" director He Luting, defied their attackers without ever "lying down." By the time He, who reminds me a bit of Nien Cheng (Life and Death in Shanghai), was finally released from jail and rehabilitated he had written 64 rebuttals of the charges leveled against him. Central Conservatory president Ma Sicong (Sitson Ma) took a different approach: he escaped China in a very dramatic way which caused terrible suffering to many people related to him. Other famous musicians on the other hand seem to have managed to advance their careers during the Cultural Revolution. Even though Red Guards twisted the wrists of pianist Liu Shikun, he was later invited by Jiang Qing herself to play Liszt's First Piano Concerto. Pianist Yin Chengzong became a member of Jiang Qing's "inner circle of favorite artists" and contributed to the construction of the (in)famous Yellow River Concerto performing it frequently. Interestingly both pianists manage to adapt equally well to capitalism now and the Liu Shikun Piano Arts School, headquartered in Hong Kong, has branches all over China.
Personally I find the story of conductor Li Delun the most amazing document of human adaptability I have ever read. "Rhapsody in Red" could also be called a biography of Li Delun, because his life is a metaphor of artistic survival and this is actually the "leitmotif" of "Rhapsody in Red." Especially revealing is the uniquely subtle manner in which he apparently went along with and yet manipulated the erratic moods of Jiang Qing. Sometimes I am reminded of the relationship between Shostakovich and Stalin, but the relationship between Mao's wife and the conductor seemed to be more flexible.
The last chapter about the "New Era" is a bit disappointing. Unlike the earlier chapters it fails to project personal experiences. The music life of China after the Cultural Revolution seems to have suddenly mutated into a carbon-copy of other Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, Singapore or Taiwan. What is lacking in this report is a clear explanation of how the earlier history has managed to influence this development and given China's music life a personal note which would distinguish it from that of the other Asian countries. Taiwan, for example, has had no "Shanghai" and no "Cultural Revolution." Yet all those modern "Chinese" phenomena described here, the (somewhat superficial) popularity of western classical music, the curious but sometimes strangely behaved audiences, the diligent but slightly narrow minded students, the naiveté, the will to succeed, the ambitious parents, the energetic but sometimes corrupt music market, etc.....; all those phenomena can equally be observed in Taiwan and in Japan and Korea as well. I fail to see what is particularly "Chinese" about this. The chapter also cannot make me believe that-inspite of the enormous outward success of China's music students-the spirit of western classical music has sunk deep roots into China's society. Music seems to be approached, rather, as an "Olympic discipline." The title "How Western Classical Music Became Chinese" may thus be somewhat misleading.
Nevertheless, I found this book to be a very interesting read and enjoyed listening to "Rhapsody in Red."
Bravo!.......2004-11-17
Ignore the drab cover, Rhapsody in Red is as dramatic, moving and packed with unexpected twists as China's own turbulent history. Although the theme is Western, classical music the book is really about the people who fought over its evolution in China. From missionaries and mandarins to maestros and Mrs. Mao, the lives described are full of bravery, treachery and above all passion for music and their country.
The style is refreshingly direct and although the research is extraordinarily thorough it never reads like a dry, academic history book. There are many wonderful anecdotes drawn from face to face interviews and the descriptive passages are beautifully written.
From imperial times right through to modern China the writers not only provide an incredible wealth of detailed information, but they also manage to capture the atmosphere of the times. Whether it be in the imperial court in the Forbidden city, or in Shanghai during the swinging thirties, or behind the scenes in China's first conservatories of music, or in the caves of Yanan where many of the theories about the role of culture in Communist China were first set out, the combination of the occasional poiniant descriptive passage, biographic details of individuals and thorough historical research really bring these places to life for the reader.
Western classical music also proves to be a fascinating vantage point from which to analyse and develop a deeper understanding of the many debates that raged about the role of culture in Chinese society as a whole, as well as how The Middle Kingdom should respond to foreign powers.
For musicians and musicologists, sinologists, historians and anyone interested in the cultural interaction between East and West, this is one of the very best books on the subject out there today.
best story this year.......2004-08-06
"How Western classical music became Chinese" doesn't capture the real subject of this book: this is probably one of the five best books in print on Chinese history and cultural interchange. Using "classical music diplomacy" as a uniting thread, these authors tell the story of China's encounter with Western Europe and North America from the mission of Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci in the early 17th century through the "model operas" of the Cultural Revolution, one of which was performed for Nixon and Kissinger, to the break-through popular composers of contemporary China. They use fascinatingly detailed personal stories to illustrate these convergence points. Musicologists will love it, but it is no more about music than Nixon's diplomacy was about ping-pong. This book cannot be missed by anyone who loves a good story.

TOTAL FRAUD.......2006-03-04
I happen to know this author from his early escapades, and he was well known among his friends and acquaintances as a greasy con man -- hence his bankruptcy early on. For kicks, I got his book and confirmed that it is as worthless as the man himself. He's a total fraud, and if you want to do worse than waste your money you'll buy his book instead of applying yourself with truly worthwhile business ventures. Buyers beware -- avoid at all costs!!!
Robert Long
I Returned this worthless rag.......2005-10-27
I have read numerous wealth-building books. This one is worthless. It appears to be a hastily written collection of his personal stories which may or may not be applicable to you. He in several instances tells you how to bend the rules precariously, such as moving to other states to avoid bankruptcy and also tells you how to perform deceptive marketing. I have never, honestly never, felt so scammed by a book purchase, and wish I could give negative stars to warn the reader away.
LIKE AN INFOMERCIAL.......2005-10-21
This book is an intro to writing business plans filled with examples, but not saying very much.
It's like being able to read the script of an early morning infomercial in your hand and every bit as worthwhile. Some of the stories can be construed entertaining or inspiring, but relying upon Bruce Berman to get you started would be unwise.
Help is on its way.......2005-03-16
I was given the book from a friend of mine. My business just failed and the creditors were moving in fast. I folowed Bruce Berman's advice and was able to renogiate with them and keep my business open. It has only been three months and we are now running at a positive cash flow. I was going to put it up for sale on Amazon but decided to keep it in case I need to refer back to it.

Description:
Studies on the use of rainwater and greywater to promote potable water savings have been performed in different countries. The main objective of this article is to evaluate the potential for potable water savings by using rainwater and greywater in a multi-storey residential building composed of three blocks, located in Florianopolis, southern Brazil. Water end-uses were estimated by applying questionnaires and measuring water flow rates. An economic analysis was performed to evaluate the cost effectiveness of using rainwater and greywater either separately or together. Results show that the average potential for potable water savings range from 39.2% to 42.7% amongst the three blocks, considering that water for toilet flushing, clothes washing and cleaning does not need to be potable. By using rainwater, the potable water savings would actually range from 14.7% to 17.7%. When greywater is considered alone, potable water savings are higher, i.e., ranging from 28.7% to 34.8%. As for the use of rainwater and greywater combined, the potable water savings range from 36.7% to 42.0%. The main conclusion that can be made from the research is that the three systems that were investigated are cost effective as the payback periods were lower than 8 years, but the greywater system was the most cost effective one, followed closely by the rainwater one.

Customer Reviews:
Faith in God who works in history.......2001-07-12
What has Archaeology to do with Faith, edited by Charlesworth and Weaver, is a collection of four excellent papers on what is typically called `biblical' archaeology and its relationship to ones faithful devotion to the Bible. The papers examine the implications of archaeology, and its scientific reconstruction of ancient social history, on Biblical studies. These implications can often be archaeological contradictions of biblical accounts, and even when archaeology can verify biblical events, there is no way to verify the work of God. These papers examine such issues. Faith is more than archaeological understanding, yet this historical knowledge can ultimately inform our faith. These four papers address the often-ignored (by non-archaeologist) reality of `biblical' archaeology.
Archaeology and faith?.......2000-01-22
What has archaeology to do with faith? Obviously nothing. Archaeology is a social science that utilizes the scientific method. Archaeologists analyze artifacts and their distribution to help understand the lifeways of those who came before us. Whereas faith is accepting something as truth which has no evidence indicating it as such.
