Book Description

`This is the first book to comprehensively examine how OEM works in a major industrialising nation (South Korea). OEM is the main mechanism by which Korea and other East Asian countries entered markets and gained technology. It's remarkable that so few scholars, students and researchers have noticed this. At last, through detailed case analysis, we have an authoritative account of how OEM works, what the pitfalls are, how they can be avoided, and the limitations of government policy. This is essential reading for those concerned with contemporary economic development.'

- Mike Hobday, SPRU - Science and Technology Policy Research, University of Sussex, UK

Korea has been at the center of intense debate concerning the role of government in economic development. Taking an in-depth approach, this book analyzes the path of Korea's industrial technology development. In contrast to many previous studies on Korea, the author argues that the role of foreign multinational enterprises has been significant while the government's was surprisingly limited in scope.

The author addresses three main questions:

• How was Korea able to develop so effectively despite the low inflow of foreign technologies and capital?

• What is the role of multinational enterprises in `teaching' technology to the firms from developing countries?

• What has been the influence of public policy on Korea's technology development?

The author demonstrates that the key to the Korean electronics industry's spectacular growth has been through its participation in and learning from an inter-firm arrangement called `original equipment manufacturing' (OEM) arrangement, and a number of firm-level case studies support this argument.

This book will be of special interest to scholars of industrial and development economics, innovation and Asian studies. It will also be of use to policymakers responsible for industrial policy development.

5 out of 5 stars Korea's road to multinational electronics production.......2002-08-10

Technology Transfer And International Production: The Development Of The Electronics Industry In Korea is a scholarly and in-depth look at Korea's road to multinational electronics production. Three main questions are the source of discussion: 1) How was Korea able to develop its technology so successfully with such a limited influx of foreign technologies and capital? 2) What is the role of multinational firms in the process of 'teaching' technology to firms of developing countries? 3) How has Korean public policy influenced its technology development? Case studies, a careful eye for business, an analysis of the inter-business arrangement called "original equipment manufacturing" and more puts together a candid picture for answering these three key questions. An erudite study of a dynamic issue, Technology Transfer And International Production is recommended for students of the Korean electronic industry and technological innovations.

Book Description

" Everyone knows Warren is the greatest investor of our time. . . .This book for the first time captures his genius as a manager." -- Jack Welch
The first book to reveal the investment and management strategies of the Berkshire Hathaway all-star management team. Much has been written about Warren Buffett and his investment philosophy; little has been made public about the inside management of Berkshire Hathaway. With a market cap exceeding 100 billion , Berkshire Hathaway has a market value surpassing many icons of American business such as Dell, AT&T, Disney, Ford, Gillette, American Express, and GM. Drawing on his personal experiences as well as those of Berkshire's chief executives, officers, and directors interviewed for this book, Berkshire insider Robert P. Miles provides a unique look at the Berkshire Hathaway culture and its management principles.

4 out of 5 stars BUFFETT RULES.......2007-07-07

Warren Buffett is the god of investors. Thus, there's a plethora of books about him and his investing methods. Reading anything Buffett says is good. My concern with these books is they become dated very fast. For example, right now, in mid 2007, Warren is buying up railroad stocks, specifically Burlington Northern. Yet we don't glean that from this book, because it went to print before Warren got into RR's.

I've read most of the Buffett books and this one is above average. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting stories.......2007-07-03

The book has a lot of interesting stories about managers at Berkshire Hathaway. It's not much about Warren Buffett. And it has nothing to do with investment.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-06-08

Robert Miles knows Warren Buffett, and it's clear that he also knows a thing or two about the people who run the companies in Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway. Armed with information gleaned from eight months of intensive interviews, Miles uncovers what makes a Berkshire manager tick, and covers the workings of Berkshire, itself, as well. Writing through the voices of the CEOs he portrays, Miles skillfully weaves the colorful histories of 18 firms into a revealing set of success stories. Many tales are similar - the CEOs love their companies; they worked hard to build solid businesses and no one regrets selling his firm to Berkshire. They all sound genuinely happier than you might possibly believe, and each chapter has business models you shouldn't miss. We invite any executive to enter these pages for an insider's view (still, it doesn't hurt to remember, they all knew Warren was gonna read it).

2 out of 5 stars A Pedestrian Book Saved Only by the Managers Themselves.......2003-12-27

Thank goodness Berkshire Hathaway is populated by so much management talent. Even Robert Miles' mediocre writing and pedestrian insights can't obscure the real value of this book, which is to document, in a detailed and therefore fairly convincing way, Warren Buffett's exceptional ability to choose and motivate people.

Buffett's techniques for dealing with people are well-known (he talks about them constantly) and this book has almost nothing really new to reveal, but Berkshire junkies will enjoy the anecdotes and facts that bring Buffett's concepts to life in a more concrete way. Even though many of the stories are recycled, hearing a few of the managers speak in their own words and tell their own versions is revealing. That Buffett himself made a kind remark about this book is unremarkable. What else could he possibly say about a book that features some of his key people? Bottom line: this is definitely a book for those already familiar with, and enthusiastic about, Buffett.

Miles' publisher, Wylie, has created a virtual industry out of quickie trade books about Buffett. Wylie's new twist in this book is the Berkshire managers, who provide whatever shine it emits. But somewhere along the way, a mighty big assist must have been delivered on the editorial end to tone the writing style down into something publishable. How so? Miles himself comes across as one of the most self-aggrandizing, uber-promotional, un-Buffett-like people imaginable. That someone could write about Warren Buffett, with seemingly so little concept of what the man is about, is amazing. It wouldn't be the first time Buffett's name has been exploited by someone who barely knows him, but Miles takes exploitation to a whole new extreme. The Robert Miles web page, which reminds one of a three-card monte dealer or perhaps, one of the more gelatinous used car salesman types, speaks for itself. The headline, "You May Never Meet Warren Buffett, But Hear Robert P. Miles Speak and You'll Feel Like You Have" says it all. If you want to read a book about the value of humility by an author who has the nerve to compare himself to Warren Buffett, well, this is that book.

3 out of 5 stars You don't have to read it.......2000-10-30

This book covers 19 controversial issues. First the authors bring an issue, give some comments and give two articles that discuss the issue, but are contraversial to each other.

The reason why this book cannot get more than three stars is that the choise of articles wasn't really successful. Sometimes some of the articles seem not to make sence at all. Some of them don't answer any questions.

For instance, the one about Patenting Life; second article, which keeps ripping on Rifkin (the author of the previous article) instead of discussing some of the issues Rifkin mentioned in his article against Patenting Life. It's obvious that he's for patenting lives, but he doesn't come even close to some of the issues that Rifkin talks about in his article. He just tries to avoid them because he doesn't know how to answer to those claims. The author could pick a different articles in this and many other cases as well.

Also the second article of CEO Compensation Issue doesn't make any sence. Actually, the author of the article was Lisa H. Newton herself. She asserts that CEOs do nothing but writing memos and lay offs, at the same time receiving over 47,000 times (if I remember correctly) more than other people in developing nations like Africa and Asia do, and 209 times more than his employees.Common, this is not called Ethics in Business. She doesn't face the facts brought up by the author of the article who gave pretty reasonable arguements why CEOs should get that much compensations, why they are worth it.

Some of the articles do not provide with any references or sources of citations from outside sources when needed. I can mention one from Rifkin's article on patenting life.

The reason why this book got three stars is that, the issues brought by authors are pretty interesting and some are thought provoking. Even though one doesn't agree with the arguements, you can still learn something by reading them, and try not to repeat some of the blunders made by the authors.

I do recommend you to go for alternatives if you want a book on Business Ethics.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nice little book.......2005-08-24

I've got to hand it to the author, this book did exactly what it said it would do. I needed to learn Premiere fast and now, although I'm no expert, I'm pretty comfortable. I was surprised it was in color too, especially since it was less than $15.

4 out of 5 stars Useful as an Overview, Not a Tutorial.......2005-08-20

I am really of two minds about this book. My impression is that it would be almost useless to teach someone how to use Premiere Pro. I still liked it.

I am no great video editor but I do have some, small familiarity and have learned some things from other books. Based on that experience, I doubt this book would have done much good at all in learning to operate the program. Where I found it useful is in its overview and presentation. It does a great job of explaining broad concepts and giving a feel for the capabilities of the program. It also give some of the very basics of the mechanics of how to edit. I suspect I will find this book useful as a continuing reference not to explain the particulars of how to do something but to explain conceptually what can be done. I will use it as a jumping off point to investigate specific topics in other books.

The illustrations in this volume are luxurious. They are full color screen shots and are big enough, barely, to see what is happening on the screen. How I wish other training aids had as nice visuals!

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Tool.......2004-08-04

The Focal Easy Guide to Premiere Pro by Tim Kolb is just that - easy. As a longtime Premiere (and now Premiere Pro) user, I found it very easy (there's that word again) to search through the book and find references to tools or procedures that needed "refreshing" in my mind. Even if you use Premiere Pro everyday, you don't use every tool or technique on every project, so the help file and good reference books like this are essential when deadlines are looming or you are just experimenting with new ways to jazz up your videos. The descriptions are easier to follow and are better organized than the online help included with the program. They often go well beyond the information that Adobe includes in the help files.

Aiding me in my searches (and for new users, making Premiere Pro easier to understand) are the book's graphics. The graphics used for the screenshots in this book are, in a word, spectacular. They are crisp, clear and large enough so that even a casual viewing conveys lots of information immediately. They are what sets this book apart from so many other "getting started" books.

I really wish that I had had this book available when I was first learning Premiere; it would have saved me lots of time and lots of bumps from banging my head against the wall.

5 out of 5 stars Get working quickly with this book.......2004-05-06

A great find! This little book helped me get up to speed with Premiere Pro quickly. It is not a watered down "for dummies" book, but is not an 800-page bible either (which I don't need!!). Instead it gets right down to business and shows you how to get through your first couple projects with ease. The full color, price and ease of use make this a great package.

5 out of 5 stars Quick read, great info. Can't beat the price........2004-05-05

This book is certainly a great way to get your chops, being taught by someone who uses the application for real world work - on a daily basis.

I've followed Tim around the web for years, on different forums and as a respected expert editor and Adobe guru. You can find him online and pick from his reviews, articles and posts that all clearly demonstrate his qualifications and insights before you buy the book... But no need, it's cheap! Very easy to get way more than 15.00 of value from this book. You really can't go wrong.

It's far better than trudging through a boring black and white book (typical software manual) that covers everything but what you really want to know! The book is laid out very well, lots of color. It offers a very visual method of learning the app and why the different parts of the app are there..what they do.

I've used Premiere for 4 or 5 years now. Premiere Pro is quite different. This book is a great primer and companion for learning the ins and outs of this newly revamped Non-Linear Editor.

            Book Description

The Jordan River waters are essential for the development and well being of the people of its basin. Plans for the development of its water resources were considered since the beginning of the twentieth century, and have long been central to dispute between riparian nations. This volume reviews the roots of conflict over the Jordan between Arabs and Jews and the development of that conflict over the past 150 years. It analyzes the positions of Arabs and Israelis and the role of the United States in promoting a settlement. The work then presents the development of a negotiated resolution of that part of the conflict related to Jordan and Israel through the Middle East Peace Process. This book approaches the Jordanian-Israeli water affairs in the Jordan River Basin with a wide interdisciplinary perspective. It unfolds the full history of the dispute and negotiation process, beginning in the 1950s and ending with the water accord in 1974.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Get your heads out of the sand.......2006-02-16

To all those reviewers who didn't like Donald Clarke's five-star book, get your heads out of the sand, or wherever else they are. All or Nothing at All is outstanding on America, politics, gangsters, Sinatra, his music, his family, his friends, enemies, and more.

I'm rereading it now. It is marvelous!

1 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Worthless Book.......2005-08-13

One thing I'm happy about is that I didn't pay full price. What a waste of paper and cardboard. There's nothing new in this book, nothing you couldn't find elsewhere. It's actually written in the first person, believe it or not, as evidenced by the not so infrequent "I never liked such and such" or "I found it to be." After a while, who cares? And evidently, the author didn't rate either a first rate editor or a fact checker. For example, there's no "e" after the "g" in judgment. He does this repeatedly. Moreover, for someone allegedly so well-versed in the entertainment industry, he's apparently rather ignorant of some basic knowledge. When discussing Reagan's inaugural parties planned by Sinatra, Clarke mentions "someone named Ben Vereen who performed in blackface", and then trashes Sinatra's "judgement" in arranging such entertainment. Uh, Mr. Clarke, Ben Vereen WAS black, he couldn't help BUT be in blackface!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent and Opinionated Book.......2005-08-06

Frank Sinatra was always a puzzle -- he sang like an angel, behaved like a jerk, and yet was apparently an extremely generous individual who kept his many charities secret.

Donald Clarke sits with all the contradictions of Sinatra, both musical and personal, without attempting to simplify them. The reviewer below who complained that the book is like an extended essay is right. Clarke does not attempt, in this relatively slim volume, to write the definitive biographical work. It is instead a shrewd, opinionated, and often funny review of the man and his music.

I'm not a FS fanatic, but I do own about 40 or 50 of his albums, which I guess makes me more than a casual fan. I almost always agreed with Clarke's musical judgements (although I think rather more of "Live at the Sands" than he does) and found a lot of value in the way he attempts to separate Sinatra's own bloviations from the facts (e.g. was Mitch Miller really responsible for how bad much of Sinatra's mid-50s work is? Not really, says Clarke, and gives reasons for this opinion).

This book is not a replacement for a full-length biography -- if you want the details on who slapped who first in every fight he had with Ava Gardner, you'll have to go elsewhere. It's also not a replacement for an annotated discography, although it made me hungry for one -- I thought I had a pretty good handle on Sinatra's recorded output, and Clarke made me realize there's a lot I don't know.

As for Clarke's writing style, I say "bravo." Judging by the impish grin he's wearing in the jacket photo, I'd say he's well aware of how provocative some of his comments are, but there's nothing arrogant about this book. Clarke has his opinions, and states them very strongly, but it's clear the reader is welcome to his or her own. If you're the sort of reader who is secure enough to enjoy strongly held and amusingly stated beliefs rather than be upset by them, I recommend this book most highly.

            1 out of 5 stars Amateurish trifle.......1999-10-21

Mr. Clarke's "book" is really more of an extended ( and poorly written ) magazine essay. However, I'm not sure what magazine would publish it ( surely not the NEW YORKER or DOWN BEAT ). Clarke never sheds any light on Sinatra's upbringing, personality or musicianship. Not for a moment do you feel either the man or his music come to life. There are literally dozens of examples of his amateurish writing; in one amazingly idiotic passage ( page 132, 3rd paragraph ) he states that the title of Sinatra's famous album "SONGS FOR SWINGIN' LOVERS" has become "mildly irritating" (!). He goes on a moment later to ask whether "swinging" was a euphemism for suburban wife swapping (!!). No one should shell out $$ for this type of drivel. By the way, Mr. Clarke, if you're amusing yourself by reading this review in between writing your "books"; I DIDN'T buy it ( thank God I merely checked it out of the library! ). To concur with some of the other reviewers: regarding the music, try Will Friedwald's "THE SONG IS YOU; A SINGER'S ART" or Charles Granata's upcoming "SESSIONS WITH SINATRA". For an extremely well-balanced, thorough account of Mr. Sinatra's life, try Randy Taraborelli's "SINATRA: A COMPLETE LIFE". For a short but poignant essay, try Pete Hamill's "WHY SINATRA MATTERS". For a famous account of Sinatra c.1966, try Gay Talese's essay entitled "FRANK SINATRA HAS A COLD" ( available in the FRANK SINATRA READER ). Other short but informative passages on Sinatra have been written by Shirley MacLaine and Mia Farrow ( I forget the exact titles of their books ). As far as Clarke's volume is concerned, it only ranks slightly above Kitty Kelley's stinker; in other words, it deserves a spot deep in the bowels of Dante's inferno.

            1 out of 5 stars A third-rate book written by a second-rate writer.......1999-08-19

You get the feeling reading this book that Donald Clarke sees himself as a far more noble and heroic character than some mere mortal like Frank Sinatra. Clarke has taken self-righteousness and developed it into something approaching an art form. A waste of time, a waste of money, a waste of paper, glue, ink, and whatever else was needed to print this "biography". By the way, give the word "biography" the loosest interpretation possible. Donald Clarke has even less of a clue as to what the word "biograpy" means and his book is the best evidence to support my thesis.
