I have ordered and have read quite a wide variety of personal finance books and investment books over the last 6-8 months. I am pleased to say that Let's get Financial Savvy is not just a neat title. The book blends the topics of personal finance and investment in an easy to read personal style. Your real life experience makes for inspirational reading too. It covers the fundamentals of both topics very well and is not overly lengthy. Since it was written relatively recently is also very up to date. Well written.

Those new to personal finance concepts, such as young adults newly out of college, (as will many an adult in need of a financial mangement refresher) will find Let's Get Financial Savvy! by Lois Center-Shabazz to be an important and effective guide. The author persevered through a financial crisis and here imparts personal experienced based tips on how to invest, handle money, and protect against risky ventures. From online investments to mortgages, as will many an adult comes packed with charts and calculations.

Dr. Shabazz, has mastered the art of "money!" She has focused on very important money issues but has explained retirement, ira's, cd and mutual funds in a way that a beginning investor can begin to invest and an experienced investor can take tips from her to make their portfolio larger. This was an excellent and informative book.

After reading Let's Get Financial Savvy! I now have started to fund my work retirement account, started a balanced budget, written and working a plan for getting out of debt. This book gives you such clear step-by-step instructions for getting your financial life in order. After reading Lois' book no one should be in the dark about money and it's potential.

In this book, Robert Solomon asserts that sound ethics is precondition for any long-term business and that success depends upon alignment with the values that operate within the community that the business operates within. In other words, profit depends upon shared values and companies that ignore this principle eventually end up failing.

Robert Solomon uses an Aristotelian approach i.e. he is quite cognitively oriented. His books appeal to the logical mind, but the implications certainly extend to larger contexts and areas that are important, but more difficult to articulate. This larger processing and application is often left to the reader.

As multinational corporations gain more power to do good and ill on large scales, it is increasingly important for business leaders to look at the ethical implications of how they do business, the economic landscape and even the metaphysics that underlies our economics. This book is certainly a right step in that direction. I would also suggest that we look at how we compensate our CEOs. For example, how would things be different if we compensated CEOs more heavily on their five and ten year performance rather on the very next quarter's results.

A Successful Corporation has nothing to do with football........2000-07-26

Forget Attila the Hun. Ditch Machiavelli. Stop thinking about your corporation in terms of a football game or a war. There is a better metaphor, and you will be happier and more successful if you adopt it. According to Robert Solomon (and he quotes Nietzsche among others, to prove his case!), many of our personal values seem to be in conflict with those of the corporation where we're employed, because our way of thinking about business success has been poisoned by the mental models we use, and the leaders who we are asked to emulate (football coaches and 'The Scourge of God'? ).

"A Better Way to Think About Business: How Personal Integrity Leads to Corporate Success" delivers exactly what its title promises, and has already helped me through a couple of ethical dilemmas that I've had to resolve in the course of my job. This book is very clearly written and provokes clear thinking on the subject of business ethics. It does not insult your intelligence by stringing slogans together and calling the result a 'business ethic'. (Personal note: I am so bloody sick of books that proport to teach me 'Managing by Values' and turn out to be fluff and slogans and bad writing to boot. Business ethics is a very complex and gut-wrenching subject, and some authors need to treat their readers with a bit more honor and dignity.)

Sorry for the above tirade. Read this book. If you don't have time to read the whole thing, dip into the 'Catalog of Business Virtues' at the end of the book and try to schedule a virtue per day to think about on the long commute home. I'm sure I'll keep going back to Robert Solomon for a 'better way to think about' the really tough business situations.

Refreshing, thorough, and exceptional! Read it........1999-11-02

Robert Solomon offers a practical, clear and systematic approach to thinking through the place of integrity in the success of any enterprise. It is as applicable to your life as to your business.

This is a remarkable book in that it lays a sensible, philosophical foundation and builds a compelling, practical case for the place of virtue in business. His definition, that "a virtue, in essence, is a value embodied and built into action", leads the reader to understand the true basis for a successful strategic planning process. Solomon emphasizes the need for corporations to see themselves as communities, people- rather than profit-driven, and, thus, to change to "a better way of thinking". An excellent, careful, scholarly treatment presented in a linear, holistic, engaging style, this book, taken to the boardrooms of the world, can only change business for the better. It is a must-read for those who care to maintain their sanity in the multi-faceted corporate world. The book is aptly named!

Book is weak; text should have the critical and in-depth writing of an attorney, but this weak book sounds like a touchy-feel session given by a pep-talk real estate agent trying to sell some canon-fodder real estate professional wanna-be a class, any class.
book has no place on this site! It should be hustled in the bookstore of a real estate board where they dont know any bettersave your money: this author has very little clues as to Mchigan real estate law, though with better research this Palmer book could be of assist to someone wanting some knowledge of Michigan legal points in real estate, but, again, this book misses the mark,

Most Practical, Most Inspiring book on Money I've read!.......2002-12-09

I love self-improvement books, and I've just recently gotten interested in improving my financial well-being. Although I've enjoyed Rich Dad, Poor Dad, and am now working with the One-Minute Millionaire, this book should be required reading before them both!

Written very clearly, with lovely personal touches throughout, this book focuses on practical exercises and skills to put to use right away. Real Wealth helped me look at my beliefs and habits around money, and then helped me form a real plan about how to do things differently. I love the balance of spiritual and practical application Robinson uses, and somehow he has motivated me to actually DO what he suggests!

"Barbara Espinoza wrote to me to ask for interviews and contacts for a proposed book. She managed the unthinkable: an interview with the reclusive hermit, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond! Jeffrey offered up some Driving In Diverse: A Collective Profile Espinoza Driving in Diverse thoughts on his life and work, which he wouldn't ordinarily share with me - and I see him every few months for lunch or dinner. What a treat to see this in print. He probably made most of it up `though.

Barbara needs a little help on the proof-reading front - a lot of typos and grammatical no-no's here, but still a good read. Published in 1999, her book is curiously named "Driving In Diverse." -IAN ANDERSON

Some good points, but..........2002-01-04

On the plus side, this book succeeds at being distinct from other Tull books in certain respects. For example, a chapter is devoted to fairly long interviews with various (mostly past) Tull members. The photo gallery was also replete with pictures I have not seen. Unfortunately, the writing is somewhat amateurish and the editing/proofreading is even worse. In my first ten minutes or so I identified over 20 typographical errors and mistakes in grammar. An example is the author's CONSTANT misuse of the contraction "it's" in place of the possessive "its". Overall, I would not recommend it.

Driving in Diverse Mild !.......2001-12-25

The book Driving in Diverse would serve well for newer fans of Jethro Tull. Barbara Espinosa is enthusiastic in her collection of facts, tidbits and interviews regarding all things Tull! I would rate Greg Russo's Jethro Tull Reference Manual a more complete reading of Jethro Tull and Dave Rees, Minstrels in the Gallery a close second. Driving Diverse is a good companion to the Jethro Tull stories in print.
