This book is incredibly shallow and I regret that I bought it. I didn't expect it to be the best book ever, but I thought it would at least be decent or that I might get some good ideas from it.

The comments from publisher make the book sound well thought out, insightful, and helpful. I should have paid attention to the reviews from other readers and saved my time and money. Its only saving grace is that it is a quick read.

The book makes claims and assertions without citing any sources or authorities and that in some cases were the opposite of my experience. For example, the book claims that no one would even think of buying a house without a lawyer, so we should get one to buy a business. Securing the services of a lawyer to buy a business may be good advice, but the book's reasoning is faulty. I have bought four houses and sold three in three different states and I never used a lawyer. No realtor I've ever worked with suggested getting a lawyer. I suppose some people do for complicated transactions or maybe it's customary in certain parts of the country, but I've never known anybody to use a lawyer to buy a house. Little things like that detract from the credibility of the book again and again.

I found the book's frequent grammatical flaws and heavy use of the passive voice distracting. The book makes reference to exhibits that never appear or that show up elsewhere. The exhibits that are in the book have poor explanations and are weakly referenced. I could not get the numbers in one exhibit to add up. Also, the book at times contradicts itself. In one section it advises the reader to never go to friends or family to help finance a business. In another section, it says to do just that. It doesn't really give you any practical ideas or ways to implement them. The few ideas the book does give are so basic that it appears that the author is simply trying to capitalize on a few experiences he has had and make a book and a quick buck out of them.

I felt like the book was the equivalent of something an average high school student might have written who had procrastinated a big assignment until the night before it was due and then tried to throw something together at the last minute.

I'm not even going to go into how basic and well... bad this book is. I recommend you go search some free websites on how to buy a business, you will learn everything that's in this book and more.

Worst Self Help Book I have Ever Purchased.......2004-04-08

This is by far the worst self help book I have ever purchased. To put it simply, this book is titled incorrectly. There is only one chapter, 15-20 pages, on financing a business. At no point does the author explain in detail how it is possible to purchase a business for little to no money down. As a matter of fact the author continuously mentions that you need a large cash source to purchase and run a business. If you are looking for an EXTREMELY basic book that outlines the process of buying a business this is for you. If you are looking for a book that will explains how to buy a business with little or no money down, look elsewhere.

Wonderful showbiz biography........2004-07-17

Behind the scenes peeks into the inner-workings of show business are often self-congratulatory, full of tired insights and recycled anecdotes, and little more than glorified puff pieces. The arrival of Pierre Cossette's "Another Day in Showbiz" is all the more a truly welcome addition to the biography canon in that it both offers a plethora of quotable stories and a real attempt by its author to explain how an insider rose from being an outsider to becoming the proverbial insider without losing humility or a wicked sense of humor.

Particularly striking is Cossette's willingness to reveal his failures in addition to his many successes. A man whose winning track record includes celebrated productions in Las Vegas, on television, on Broadway and throughout the music world could easily have omitted his duds, but his candidness helps make the book resonate all the more as an instructional primer on the entertainment industry. The clear lesson here -- that it is persistency that can and does succeed -- is hardly unique to Cossette, but his cheerful yet no hold's barred spin on it gives the reader a glimpse that they could never have been privy to prior.

Getting rejected by Angie Dickinson with a romantic overture might not be something most would boost of, but the author's ability to see it as a reality check and to move forward is a perfect example of his self-deprecating style. Then again, his success with woman has obviously been quite good as witnessed by his glowing words for his current wife. In fact, his clear love for her, as well as for the other key woman in his life, is one of the book's strongest suits. Despite, or perhaps because of, his tremendous success, the obvious tenderness of the man serves as a winning example of a "nice guy finishing first."

To call him a true renaissance man may sound like a cliché, but it is perfectly apt. He knew everybody before they were anybody. Among the many highlights of "Another Day in Showbiz" are lengthy sections on his career in Las Vegas (where he not only began the tradition of the lounge singer, but booked Ronald Reagan and nearly every star of the era), an odd but telling encounter with Howard Hughes, his dealings with superstars ranging from Andy Williams to Celine Dion, his Broadway success with "The Will Rogers Follies" (including some interesting Marla Maples' anecdotes), the founding of his Dunhill Records label, and of course the book's main highlight -- his producing the Grammy Awards telecast for 35 years.

The manner in which he was able to convince a reluctant television network to air the Grammys live for the first time nearly 35 years ago is a perfect example of juggling, risking and trusting your guts. Incredible as it may seem today, there was no real interest from the network brass in such a telecast. Again though, Cossette's persistency and obvious smarts paid off. Cossette has been rightly referred to as "The Godfather of the Grammys," and anyone who reads this book will probably want to kiss his ring -- and want to go into "Showbiz."

Great showbiz insider's tale.......2004-06-26

I've been reading "insiders" books on the entertainment industry for decades, and can't remember having as much fun as when strolling through Pierre Cossette's "Another Day in Showbiz." I think the first thing I'm drawn to when reading an autobiography about someone in the industry is how many times I'll stop and go "Wow" after seeing a juicy anecdote. This book is just loaded with them.

For example, the tale of how he got Ronald Reagan to do his one and only stint in Las Vegas is a gem. Even better is the story of how Howard Hughes kept trying to meet with Cossette, but kept canceling. Hughes was able to get two police cars to intercept Cossette at the airport, dragging him away to security to deliver a personal message from Hughes, apologizing for being unavailable.

I think I learned the most while reading the section about how Cossette turned a small-time, industry only event like the Grammys into one of the biggest annual events on TV. As the networks kept rejecting it, he was finally able to secure a deal with ABC to put it on live, providing he could get Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin to host. Apparently, the network was worried about those "long haired hippy-types" on primetime, so a squeaky clean host was needed. Well, Cossette was able to pull some strings, get Williams on board, and get the Grammys on the air.

Other highlights range from the poignant -- he's pretty frank about his strengths as well as weaknesses -- to the absurd. The anecdote about Ringo Starr meeting Lucille Ball comes to mind, in a meeting of superstars too weird to make up. Other tales involving Celine Dion, Donald Trump, Sammy Davis Jr. and Ann-Margret are woven in nicely, and you never feel like he's name dropping but that he's just having fun retelling stories that will put a smile on the face of even the most jaded reader.

I suppose my biggest feeling upon finishing was a sense of being inspired. His climb from humble origins to the top of the pack involved amazing drive and an ability to tackle hurdles while overcoming the countless nay- sayers who told him what couldn't be done. These are issues I think we all have to deal with in our lives, and reading of his rise made me feel that if you dream big enough, there's little you can't accomplish.

Anyone interested in how "the biz" really works will like this book, especially with its breezy style that honestly makes you feel like you know the man by its end.

As the logic of the title states, you cannot worship Jesus without thinking that he is the Messiah. This is another vain attempt to bring the original lost to the fold.

However, as Aryeh Kaplan points out in The Real Messiah -- Jesus was not even a decent human being much less the one promised to bring the world back to its Eden glory. This book should only be read as a historical source for a sad time when there was a religion that blasphemed against Jewish Messianic hopes and dreams.

I found this guide to be immensely helpful in getting the real story - good, bad and ugly - about the leading consulting firms. The book also has a fascinating new poll/ranking of the 50 most prestigious management consulting firms to work for. (As might be expected, the consultants surveyed rated McKinsey as the #1 most prestigious and BCG as #2). I would highly recommend reading this guide.

A Savvy & Respected look at POW life.......2001-04-18

Frank Farnsley weaves a tale of hardness with a rare sensitive approach. In "Prisoner of War", Farnsley takes the reader through POW camplife like a tour guide in New York City! Unlike many war authors who lose their style of writing to grasp the fact of horror, Farnsley maintains his sly storytelling tongue and produces an epic that will go down in his family's history. I found out, after reading this book, that Farnsley died shortly after it's release. He end's his tale with Thomas Wolfe's quote: "You can't go home again" and disagrees saying that: "As long as I have one close,living relative, I shall go home again, because it's one of the most wonderful experiences I've ever had." In light of his passing, he truly has gone home again.

Gripping, intense, yet easy-to-read.......1999-08-01

This is a moving, first hand account of humor and horror, the torture and deprivations experienced by bombing crews shot down and captured over Nazi-occupied Europe in the closing days of WWII. It is a subject much overlooked by students of WWII and the daily trials and tribulations are painstakingly detailed by the author over fifty-years later in a short, simple but gripping narrative rarely spoken about by the men who lived through it.

While searching for a book on music therapy for people on the autistic spectrum, I came across Lorna Glassmans book. She takes the reader on a journey through her personal explorations leading to her quest to become a music therapist. Her stories take the reader to the sensitive and vivid realities of helping the elderly as well as the disabled in their need to still feel whole. Music therapy brought her clients through many journeys of self discovery and ultimately revitalized the joy in their lives.
This book is a must read for anyone seeking knowledge in music therapy as well as the expertise of the writers clinical skills in neuropsychology. I could not put this book down once I began reading it. It showed me the true value of music therapy through the visual guidance of the author.
