It's quaint that in this day of search engines to help us find more search engines, some old-fashioned reference books are still perennial sellers. When The Irwin Guide to Using The Wall Street Journal premiered in 1984, the future day traders of the world weren't trading much more than Atari cartridges. So, the advent of this sixth edition--penned, as ever, by Michael B. Lehmann, a University of San Francisco economics professor who has developed a popular seminar class around it--receives a round of well-deserved kudos.

Even if, that is, its title remains a bit of a misnomer. For this is not, nor has ever it been, so much a guide to using the WSJas it is a tidy primer on the fundamental workings of the U.S. economy and stock markets, intended not just to help readers enjoy the WSJ more, but to help them more fully comprehend what they read there. Lehmann covers just about everything, like a rigorous-but-not-draconian year of Economics 101: from how and why interest rates affect markets and when to expect the next recession to the Federal Reserve's impact on your investment portfolio and which fixed-income market is right for you. The guided tour Lehmann gives is well organized and accessible to the average financial layperson who can handle sentences slightly longer than those in USA Today and doesn't think "Federal Reserve" refers to an early 19th-century architectural style. A certain amount of patience may be called for, too: though no opaque academic text, The Irwin Guide is far from one of those Dummies/Idiots books that somehow crams the greatest matters of civilization into what generally look like coloring books for adults. Lehmann's text is dense, relieved only occasionally by various charts or articles previously published in the WSJ. Curious is the near-total absence of terms you would have expected to see in an update from the 1996 edition--terms like "Internet," "dot-com," and "WWW." But after six editions you have to think that Lehmann's a sly one--maybe he speaks most eloquently of how the current dot-com/IPO mania will play in the long term by saying absolutely nothing. --Timothy Murphy

3 out of 5 stars Basic Information and not all in the WSJ.......2006-07-30

The book is a light introduction to economics. As such, it is interesting and it does lead you to some of the more obscure corners of the WSJ online (for which even print subscribers must pay a subscription fee, plus another for Barron's online).

A big problem, however, is that a majority of the interesting charts with historical data are drawn from sources other than the WSJ. In addition, these sources (such as the US Census Bureau) provide only the raw data, not the charts.

    5 out of 5 stars ON Target.......2005-11-26

The problem with too many people who have some extra money to invest is that they listen too much to too many who know too little. Everyone is always looking for the fast money. Often the investment money goes down the tubes with the bad advice promising quick reward.

Michael Lehmann has written a book that takes any investor through a thoughtful, fact filled series of lessons on how to use data to make well informed decisions. Listening to Uncle Bob pontificate about his "Big dollar investment tip" for the day should go right out the window. Lehmann's "Using the Wall Street Journal" should become the primer for anyone who is serious about investing with knowledge. A little reading of the right material pays off. Michael Lehmann's book IS the right material and has paid off for me over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars The best economics book ever.......2005-11-19

I used this book in my Internet Data Sources class at the University of San Francisco in the Spring of 2005. The course was taught by the author of the book, Michael B Lehmann. He is the greatest professor ever and this book helped through the whole course, which was the most useful I took in college.

    5 out of 5 stars really useful.......2005-10-29

As someone who never set foot into an economics classroom, Michael Lehmann's book is a huge relief. His book clearly walks the reader through the process of how the economy actually works and demystifies economic indicators. This book gave me a seat at the table of my own financial management.

5 out of 5 stars American Economic System Made Easier.......2005-10-22

Michael Lehmann proves that you don't have to get a college degree in Economics to be able to understand the American economic system. Using the multifold economic data regularly published by the Wall Street Journal as his his focus, Professor Lehmann goes about explaining the background and meaning of the data and how to interpret it for your own advantage. He covers subjects which would be includedin a variety of college courses and does so in a clear and understandable narative.

He provides a rich background and explanation on subjects such as the Business Cycle, Role of consumer demand, the role of the Federal Reserve System, Fiscal Policy, International Transactions, and the Leading Economic Indicators. He also provides information on how to keep up with the data using internet and computer access.

A must have for any person interested in understanding the American economy.

5 out of 5 stars More Fun, Less Math.......2007-10-21

This book is partly More Guns, Less Crime for Dummies. The other parts are how the media works against gun ownership, how the government works against gun ownership, and how these two things cost human lives.

It is a fun and easy read, and afterwards you will be a little more clever about how you view polls, statistics, and news in general.

5 out of 5 stars Very dry reading.......2007-09-01

If you can get past the numbers research then you'll benefit from this book. And, you'll never understand the evidence behind the truth about the benefits of gun possession versus the costs until you read it. The Bias Against Guns easily discredits those opposed to gun possession. Anti-gun folks don't tell the truth about the benefits of owning guns - John Lott does and proves it with advanced statistical analysis and research.

The proof that proves the benefits of gun possession is in this book.

Right wing, non-scholarly press. Then look at where Lott's critics publish--in scholarly journals and with academic presses.

    Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Who should read this..........2007-04-01

Most of the news we see every day is favored toward showing the use of guns as bad. Whether this is because of a media plot to condition the public against guns, or because, in general, the people who work for the mainstream media are horrified by guns is not the point. What this book does is give us the other side of the debate, a side that needs to be heard.
Anyone who is caught by the day to day onslaught of the media bias against guns, but has an open mind and thinks they should have both sides of the story, should read this book. Anyone who instinctively knows that guns are the basis of all the freedoms we enjoy as Americans and would like a better understanding of that, should read this book.
Anyone else, it will be a waste of your money.

1 out of 5 stars The Stephen Glass of econometricsisisis?.......2006-12-30

Fans of this 'scholarly work' (if computerized number crunching and anecdotal evidence can be called scholarly) by a 'much-published academician' (if that is meaningful to you) would no doubt be disappointed to learn Lott has based crucial evidence upon a survey he conducted himself and then 'unfortunately lost all trace of' the data; that he & his family have taken it upon themselves in the past to write stellar reviews for his books on Amazon.com; that Lott has found it necessary to defend his work by using pseudonyms and fake personas ('Mary Rosh')--but why, when the numbers speak for themselves??

Certainly not in order to profit from the audacious frenzy a claim like 'unregistered assault weapons reduce crime' would inevitably create...

Please, read 'How to Lie With Statistics' instead. Heck, read Wikipedia's article on John Lott, which cites the New England Journal of Medicine's statement:

[Lott] finds, for example, that both increasing the rate of unemployment and reducing income reduces the rate of violent crimes and that reducing the number of black women 40 years old or older (who are rarely either perpetrators or victims of murder) substantially reduces murder rates. Indeed, according to Lott's results, getting rid of older black women will lead to a more dramatic reduction in homicide rates than increasing arrest rates or enacting shall-issue laws.'

Controversy is indeed delicious, and who can fault some guy for trying to drum up a little press--but clouding such a serious issue in which lives are at stake with fuzzy math is undoubtedly reprehensible.

You can either be persuaded about this author's ethos by a few dazzling blurbs by 'Nobel Prize winners of Economics' (a solid science to be sure), or by his own behavior in response to scepticism. As Jon Weiner's Op-Ed in the LA Times states concerning the Lott v. Levitt lawsuit:

Lott is not suing those who have said some of his pro-gun research was "invented," "faked" or "cooked." The lawsuit turns on the definition of "replicate," from the "Freakonomics" sentence about how other scholars have tried and failed to "replicate his results." Lott maintains "replicate" means "analyze the identical data in the way Lott did." Because nobody tried to do that, he argues, "Freakonomics" is wrong. Most people, however, understand "replicate" to mean something like "confirm." Lott's reputation has indeed been "seriously damaged" by critics, but only because they have described many apparent holes in his dubious research and misleading citations. Blocking the sale of a book based on a literal interpretation of a single word [is] outrageous.'

Everything You've Heard About Investing Is Wrong!, by respected money manager (and one-time professional blackjack player) William H. Gross, bucks traditional wisdom by predicting that stocks and bonds will average returns of just 6 percent over the next decade. In terms understandable to novice and experienced investors alike, it then suggests ways to maximize profits during this post-bull period. Liberally sprinkled with personal anecdotes, this is a surprisingly entertaining and thought-provoking book.

    Book Description

One of today's best money managers heralds the onset of a new financial era, in which the rules for investors will be dramatically different. With wit and humor, Gross details recommended strategies, revealing where the markets are headed--and how to ride them to success.

5 out of 5 stars Bond Guru Shares His Wisdom.......2007-08-13

    What I Liked About It
-- Shows how to THINK ABOUT INVESTING as opposed to providing rote formulas that will probably be misused
-- Good brief overview of the yield curve and what that means for bond investing
-- Great discussion on strategies for investing in low-volatility rate environment
-- Enlightening discussion of the implicit "put" options in mortgages and corporate issues and how to take advantage of them
-- One of the most human and enjoyable financial books I've read

    What Needed Work
-- Will disappoint those looking for a bond investing "playbook" or formula
    -- Doesn't discuss in-depth strategies for high-volatility rate environments
-- A bit dated in some aspects.
-- Retail investors may not be able to apply these strategies without significant capital

I've written an in-depth review on my enlightened-american.com website but here's the basic gist:

All the great investors share some common characteristics -- an elegant simplicity, an ability to cut through to the essentials and an approach that integrates other disciplines or perspectives. Furthermore, the great investor-writers like Buffett, Greenblatt or Pabrai have that extraordinary ability to distill complex material into a comprehensible explanation that the average person can grasp. Bill Gross has all of this in spades and displays some of it throughout this book.

Writing in 1997, Gross posits that a combination of high debt levels, expanding globalization and shifting demographics would mean slow-growth GDP numbers. As a result, investors should expect bond/stock returns of 6% and 8%, respectively, since corporate returns should eventually track economic output. He lays out a basic lesson in the yield curve, the case for disinflation and strategies for investing in a world of 6-8% returns.

Along the way, Gross treats the reader to the pros and cons of corporate issues, mortgage-backed issues, emerging-market debt as well as more general concepts like macro-economic analysis, the famous PIMCO total return strategy and the plankton theory (especially pertinent in today's [2007] housing bust). As he discusses these potentially dull topics, he weaves real-life analogies into his explanations and as such, the book is entertaining to read while you're learning. Some of these analogies fit better than others (the Plankton Theory working best) but Gross turns a book about boring bonds into an investing page-turner -- an admirable feat.

Highlights for me include the discussion of corporate and mortgage-backed issues. He outlines their inherent drawbacks and then illustrates why and how to use these features to your advantage in a low-volatility rate environment. I also liked his discussion of stretching short-term yield maturities so that you get a nice bump in yield with marginally increasing risk.

I imagine that some may find fault with some of his predictions. Predictions are notoriously difficult and any inaccurate forecasting doesn't detract from the efficacy or validity of the investment strategies he lays out. His methods are sound and his record proves it -- it's up to you to know when to apply them.

Others may gripe about the non-linear nature of Gross' musings. These people are probably looking for a playbook on bond investing -- a no-nonsense, how-to treatment on bond investing. If that's what you're looking for, I would point to Cohen's Bond Bible. I would also suggest that you are doing yourself a disservice. There is no hands-free formula for successful investing. I can't speak for him but I imagine that Gross takes the long, winding path because for him, investing successfully is as much about surveying all of the societal landscape as it is about crunching numbers. Ultimately, an investing education is more than just how to invest -- it's about how to approach investing. The first path will always see you fighting the last war; the latter allows you to prepare for the war ahead.

4 out of 5 stars A great guide to setting priorities.......1998-12-09

It's been a number of years since I read this book, but I still refer to it often. For the person who is trying to figure out his or her mission in life, Tony sets out some great principles and guidelines for doing so. This is a must-read for people trying to determine what they're going to do with their life career-wise.

The second half of the book is much weaker than the first, as Tony gets on his soapbox about caring for the needy, a worthy cause but not necessarily the "calling" that everyone will respond to. Still, the first half of the book is strong enough to make it worth buying. You can always just skip the last few chapters if you wish.

                Book Description

Global Civil Society: Dimensions of the Nonprofit Sector provides a comprehensive country-by-country analysis of the scope, size, composition, and financing of the nonprofit sector in twenty-two countries in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, with new data on nonprofit employment, volunteering, expenditures, and revenues. In addition, it provides a comparative overview and documents recent trends in sector size and composition.

Among other things, the results demonstrate that the nonprofit sector is a far more significant economic force around the world than is commonly understood, that substantial differences exist in both the overall size and the composition of this sector in different countries, that private philanthropy plays a far less significant role in the financing of this sector than either fees or public sector support, and that the sector has grown substantially in recent years in most of the countries for which trend data are available.

Included in the book are Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom in Western Europe; the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia in Central and Eastern Europe; Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru in Latin America; as well as Australia, Israel, Japan, and the United States.

Global Civil Society is essential reading for nonprofit and foundation leaders, public policy makers, educators, and others interested in nonprofit activity around the world. This 511-page volume is the result of years of study by nearly 150 researchers in 22 countries through the Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project.

                    Book Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the market in Latin America face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying distempers, water pigments, varnishes, and lacquers to Latin America? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of distempers, water pigments, varnishes, and lacquers vary from one country to another in Latin America? Do exporters serving the market in Latin America have similar market shares across the importing countries? On the supply side, Latin America also sells to the international market of distempers, water pigments, varnishes, and lacquers. Which countries in Latin America supply the most exports of distempers, water pigments, varnishes, and lacquers? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for distempers, water pigments, varnishes, and lacquers in Latin America. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. Icon Group has developed a proprietary methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for distempers, water pigments, varnishes, and lacquers for those countries serving Latin America via exports, or supplying from Latin America via imports. We do so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.
