    Book Description

U.S. firms doing business in Germany are succeeding far better than usually reported. Indeed, 14 of the top 1,700 American companies with direct investment in Germany placed among the top 100 German industrial firms in sales in 1994, a fact that made big news in Germany but was never mentioned in the U.S. press. Here now, in one succinct, readable volume, is all of the vital information that American companies, and companies elsewhere, will need to enter and succeed in this lucrative German market. Certainly there are drawbacks, but attorneys James A. Hart and Dieter Schultze-Zeu make clear there are significant advantages as well, and in certain important ways it may be even easier to do business there than in other major industrial countries such as Japan. The authors look carefully at the scope of U.S.-German business, and then compare the three economic superpowers -- Germany, Japan, and the United States -- in terms of such variables as gross domestic product, economic growth, and industrial production. They review the political, economic, and social considerations that have emerged from the unification of West and East Germany, and show their effects on the ways in which business in Germany is now done. They examine the principle methods of selling to Germany, the impact of the German government and legal system on American businesses. Then they discuss in detail specifics such as the legal forms of business, Germany's accounting and tax laws, and laws relating to product liability, anti-trust, labor, and social security. Also covered are the German banking and accounting systems, stock markets, and the presence of U.S. commercial banks in Germany. Of special interest are case histories of several important U.S. companies doing business there. An exceptionally useful guide for corporate executives, attorneys, and a cogent introduction to the German business environment for students, researchers, and analysts in the academic community.

5 out of 5 stars Great beginners book........2000-06-21

In starting an investment club it's important that everyone involved has a good idea of what to expect from a club. In signing agreements and feeling as though you are going to be bound to a group for a long term endeavour, this book helps to ease the anxiety that goes along with the club forming experience.

As with any other Motley Fool book this one has a reasonable balance of good, clear concise information, and foolish humor.

As a primer for beginners, this book is the best I've seen. It has lots of samples of forms and the agreements and by-laws. It is written at a level that any investor should understand what is going on.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in starting an investment club.

4 out of 5 stars Very very useful and practical reference tool.......2000-05-17

My friends and I (all women) just recently started an investment club and this book was just great. It provided useful forms, guidelines and warnings on how to setup your club and who should be in your club. A lot seems like common sense and lot isn't. We took this book with it's nice forms, etc. and ran with it. Today we have a bonafide investment club, filed our taxes and have been making investments that make us happy (not necessarily rich).

Like some of the others I bought other investment club books but you really don't need them. This one will do just as well and it's entertaining to boot.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......1999-05-07

I have read both Starting and Running a Profitable Investment Club: The Official Guide from the National Association of Investment Clubs and The Investment Club Book in addition to this book.

While the other two books are very thorough and very well done, this one is the easist to read and understand.

I recommend all new Investment Club members to try this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for a summary of how to start an invest club........1999-03-30

My sister and I were looking for info on starting an investment club for our family and we turned to the Motley Fool book. It was great for everyone in our family as we are all novices to the investing game. It was easy to read and everybody got through it before our first meeting. A big, big help!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Quick and easy.......1999-02-14

My friends and I at my work place were interested in starting an investment club but we were not sure how to do it until one of the women said: "Aha, Motley Fool has put out a book about it!" So, we ordered the books, highlighted everything, and got excited about starting a club. And we did it all because of this book.

    Book Description

A good reputation is certainly an asset for any company, but to a public that has raised its expectations of business' responsibility to society, being good just isn't good enough. More than public relations posturing or kowtowing to political correctness, social responsibility in corporations is proving essential to the long-term success of companies in today's globalized economy. Businesses must now contend with a globalized public that is increasingly aware of business' obligations to society and expects a level of accountability that most companies cannot meet. Good companies must go beyond merely being good-they must have integrity and a strategy aligned with it.

Integrity in business has traditionally meant being honest, upright, and ethical, but in response to globalization, companies are being forced to move beyond this definition and add to it another fundamental quality-integration with society. Corporations must anticipate and respond directly to the demands of public opinion rather than waiting for government intervention, mediation, and regulation to force them into action. When Good Companies Do Bad Things explores the strategic relationship between know-how, integrity, and integration, demonstrating how companies that fail to embrace the deeper meanings of these terms jeopardize their reputations and future prosperity.

The notion of corporations taking on social issues for the greater good is gaining momentum, not only because of political correctness but because it can strengthen a company's long-term strategy. Peter Schwartz and Blair Gibb examine well-known cases of companies like Shell, Nike, Texaco, and Nestlé, illustrating the huge financial risks of corporate assumptions that lead many companies to make poor choices. When Good Companies Do Bad Things explores the strategic relationship between know-how and integrity, demonstrating how companies that do not embrace the deeper meanings of these terms can jeopardize their own reputations and future prosperity. The authors present new approaches that demonstrate how it is possible to translate social value into business value.

Peter Schwartz, author of The Art of the Long View, and Blair Gibb recount well-known cases of companies like Shell, Nike, Texaco, and Nestlé, companies that found themselves facing accusations of hazardous environmental practices, racism in the workplace, and human rights violations. To themselves and the corporate world they were each considered good companies, until they were blindsided by issues on which large segments of the public felt that their trust had been violated. Schwartz and Gibb present new approaches to avoid the financial pitfalls of bad corporate assumptions and enable good companies to make good on translating social value into business value.

    2 out of 5 stars Quite a disappointment.......2005-08-17

I was quite disappointed by the book - rather shallow rendering of facts, practically no analysis, theoritising without any practical conclusions. Simple internet search provides more useful information...

1 out of 5 stars Case studies packed in with bs.......2002-02-26

This book was terrible. The writer presented several interesting case studies of good companies doing bad things, and even of good companies doing good things, which was a well written 30 or so pages. The rest of the book was just nonsense or obvious ideals thrown in there so that the author would be able to sell the book instead of making it a smaller article.

1 out of 5 stars As Intelligent as its Title - A Great Gift for Morons.......2001-11-06

This book is a collection of repetitive excerpts written by reds about green politics. It has little merit as a source of real data, and is very biased. I had trouble believing that some portions were even based on truth, especially when a quote was preceeded by the phrase "As one expert said..." or some such thing. What expert? What was there name? Finally, as anybody with a head on their shoulders can tell, few of the business strategies suggested in this book could ever really work. The author frequently gives the example of Ben and Jerry's and Levi Strauss as corporations who have profited while implementing the afforementioned suggestions. I ask, what about GM? Walmart? Boeing? It is clear that it is only profitable to use this book as a business manual if one has a very narrow customer base.

The issues tackled are stuff companies might usually ignore. But unless companies do anything do about these things, who else could make a difference in this world?

      Book Description

The book describes the construction method for a global accounting framework, referred to as the world accounting matrix (WAM). The WAM allows for the consistent presentation of international trade and finance figures in relation to domestic saving and investment. The book shows how a WAM can be used for the analysis of trade and finance in a global context. In addition, it shows how the WAM can contribute to the solution of the large statistical problems in national and global macroeconomic data.

4 out of 5 stars Coping With Cutbacks: The Nonprofit Guide to Success.......2002-06-12

This book was published several years ago, when shifts in funding began to indicate a new perspective was needed as nonprofits faced funding cutbacks. The authors note that they originally thought these cutbacks would be similar to those experienced in the 1980's, but quickly realized that changes in the 1990's were due to devolution - the delegation of power from the federal government to state, county, and local governments. They perceived this to be a fundamental shift in how Americans want to solve long-standing social problems. Thus, the book became a new way for nonprofits to think about solutions to these changes and new ways to meet mission goals.

The book is divided into chapters that address the steps in identifying current situations, models for alternative approaches to the challenges identified, and strategies for change and growth. Comprehensive worksheets are provided to assist in working through the steps each nonprofit will need to address if they are to survive. The results of their survey of nonprofits are presented in detail, showing the differences and similarities in thought processes throughout the nonprofit community. It is a very practical and easy to follow system for identifying the issues and challenges your nonprofit faces and steps in planning for a positive and proactive future.

The authors found that when they queried nonprofits, very few considered such options as modifying their mission, collaboration or advocacy. Most focused on cutbacks in staff or programs, or identifying new ways of raising money. While not eliminating these strategies, the book focuses on thinking outside the box - moving beyond basic cuts and fund raising. They believed that these typical responses simply won't work - and explain why. They focus on two broad categories of response they feel nonprofits overlook, Structural Strategies and Engagement Strategies. A large section of the book explains these concepts and outlines ways to achieve a more positive future, for your nonprofit and your community. Information is presented on dealing with engaging your community by identifying arenas of influence and using this information in strategic planning; generating alternative strategies; selecting strategies appropriate in your environment and implementation through collaborative efforts. For those wanting to focus on more traditional approaches, there is a section that details how to identify when to make cuts and effective methods for making efficient cuts.

Emil Angelica came to Orlando in May 2002 to discuss the book and new strategies he has developed since publication. It was very interesting and informative to have the opportunity to reread the book and then listen to his updated concepts. Attending the lecture was an opportunity to have words turned into an animated, personal presentation. Mr. Angelica is a fun, fascinating and organized speaker. His manner compels you to take notes, so as not to miss a single concept. The amount of information offered was almost too much to absorb, but so fascinating you couldn't disengage. Exhausted but exhilarated, was the reaction when he was finished.

Mr. Angelica presented much of the material contained in the book, using a fresh, new approach. He stressed thinking outside the box and involving your entire community. Many of his definitions are new and unexpected ways of approaching old issues. A large amount of the second part of the lecture was focused on the details of identifying, forming and working with collaboratives. Actually, the section on collaboration seemed too detailed and over stressed, more information on the topic than many of the attendees wanted.

I had read the book when it first came out, at that time it was a lot to absorb. Rereading now made so much more sense, hindsight is a great learning tool! The exciting element was having the author present his concepts and beliefs in an energetic, refreshing way, reinforcing the philosophy and adding his dynamic personality to the mix. Thanks, Emil!

          Book Description

The songs of Roger Quilter are a staple of the English art song repertoire, yet little is known of his life, and his popularity suffered an eclipse in postwar years largely through changing musical fashions. Championed by the great English tenor Gervase Elwes, Quilter became famous for songs such as 'Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal', 'Love's Philosophy' and 'Go, Lovely Rose'. The BBC included 'A Children's Overture' in their first broadcast concert, and the success of his atmospheric music for the children's fairy play 'Where the Rainbow Ends' ensured his immense popularity. Access to numerous sources worldwide, many of them unpublished, and extensive interviews with friends and family, have enabled Valerie Langfield to write a sympathetic and authoritative account of Quilter, the first full-length study. The first part focuses on Quilter's life: she examines his relationships with his friends, particularly Grainger and the de Glehn family, and how his wealth, ill-health, family and homosexuality affected him. Her researches testify to Quilter's quiet philanthropy: his many practical actions included his founder-membership of the Musicians Benevolent Fund, generous and discreet assistance to young musicians, and help to Jewish friends fleeing Germany and Austria before the second world war. The second part of the book discusses and contextualises all his music: songs, chamber, orchestral and theatre music, and his light opera, 'Julia', performed at Covent Garden in 1936.

              Book Description

This fascinating tapestry of four interwoven voices documents the experiences of each member of an Italian Jewish family during World War II. Kate Cohen, a distant relative, masterfully juxtaposes the memoirs of Aldo, the Neppi Modona patriarch, his son Leo's "fictionalized" account, and the oral histories of the mother, Rachel, and the daughter, Lionella. The result is both rich and revealing, an account of a perilous and disturbing period that also illuminates how each individual lived a different war and kept conflicting memories of it.

An academic by profession, Aldo is also a member of the Fascist Party at the time his memoir begins. Cohen seeks to unravel this seeming paradox and finds that for Jews in Italy, who by the end of the First World War had experienced several generations of freedom and prosperity, Fascism was a way to express love for the Fatherland and opposition to the Bolshevik upheaval. But Aldo's nationalist loyalty cannot ward off the anti-Semitism that follows with terrifying speed Mussolini's alliance with Hitler. The family's initial recollections of the heartache created by the "racial laws" soon expand from discrimination and suppression into real hardships: displacement, deprivation, bombings, blackouts, rationing, to hiding for their lives during the German occupation. The polyphonic voice of the narrative communicates with wrenching vividness the Neppi Modonas' pain and strength, and at the same time, through Cohen's mediating consciousness, provides insights into being a Jew in a post-Holocaust world.

5 out of 5 stars More useful than PC reviews indicate.......2002-12-13

It's a great book and I use it in my class to explore the shadings of life in those years--shadings obscured by the media reviews who would make us believe that Mussolini's fascist state was OK UNTIL they started stepping on the toes of JEWS.

But by 1935-36, Italy had used poison gas against Africans, had used genocide, and Italian Jewish fascists just cheered! This book is a teaching tool far more useful than the PC reviews would indicate.

                    Book Description

Waite Hoyt was much more than a baseball player. A multi-faceted, sometimes troubled man, Hoyt was a vaudevillian, a mortician, a writer, a painter, and (of course) a Hall of Fame pitcher. He was also an alcoholic who overcame his demons and became one of the first players to make the transition to the announcer's booth. His teammates and managers were among the all-time greats, but he'll always be associated with his friend Babe Ruth. He was there when Ruth hit 29 homers for a new record in 1919; when Ruth hit his 60th in 1927; when the Babe hit his 714th, and last, home run; he was even a pallbearer at Ruth's funeral. His career on the mound and as the Cincinnati Reds announcer lasted from 1915 to 1965, and to walk in his footsteps is to journey through the history of baseball in the 20th century.

This biography of Waite Hoyt involves many great moments in baseball history, and includes some of the classic tales that Hoyt, a natural-born storyteller, would tell about his teammates. It follows his transition from a career on the field to his career behind the microphone, and his struggles with alcoholism that almost cost him his dream of working as a broadcaster. Later chapters chronicle his years in the announcer's booth, his induction into Cooperstown, and his longtime championing of Babe Ruth as beyond compare, even as Ruth's most prominent records fell to Maris and Aaron.

While the book has several factual errors (George Bryson did the Reds TV games starting in the mid fifties not the late fifties; Gene Kelly not Gene Kell as reported replaced Jack Moran in 1962 on radio to name two errors), it is okay if you grew up listening to the Reds. For others it's probably not worth the time. Borrow the book from a library, if you feel that you must read.

                    4 out of 5 stars A lifetime of baseball.......2004-12-21

I grew up in the 70s listening to Al Michaels, Marty Brenneman and Joe Nuxhall broadcasting Cincinnati Reds baseball. I also spent many nights catching late game broadcasts by Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey, Jack Buck and Mike Shannon, Bob Prince, and Jack Brickhouse, Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau on fading AM stations. But my Dad always told me that it didn't compare to Waite Hoyt and his legendary rain delay stories.

This book does a fine job of tying together the story of Waite Hoyt as Hall of Fame pitcher and Cincinnati broadcasting legend. His playing career, especially as a member of the colorful Ruth/Gehrig Yankees, made him a teammate of an amazing number of legendary players. His reputation as a "big game" pitcher is lost on the generations that followed his active career. This obviously gave him the material for his later broadcasting career. It also rounds out the picture of a man that many only knew as a broadcaster. His transition to radio broadcaster in an environment where ballplayers were considered unacceptable material is interesting, especially in an era where being a player is a prerequisite for a color commentator. The story of a broadcaster who was known for his story telling and not for soundbites or a "catch phrase" is unique.

This book fleshed out for me the story of a Cincinnati broadcasting legend that I only knew from my Dad and Hoyt's unmemorable try at television broadcasting in 1972. I only wish that he had completed his own autobiography so I could experience his story telling abilities first hand.

This is a great read for those who grew up listening to baseball prior to the "Big Red Machine" days of the 1970s.
