5 out of 5 stars Tigue Hits All The Right Notes.......2007-05-22

I picked up this book after reading another book by Mr. Tigue on dividend investing. Like the first book I read by Tigue, this book is simple, straightforward, and very well written. However, I have to admit that at some points it was slow going, but then much of the information is not new to me, so I believe that may explain it.

Tigue borrows a marketing ploy from the infamous Stephen Covey, and uses it to pass on some general, but very powerful ideas on long term investing. The first chapter talks about the various investment vehicles available to save and invest, either tax-deferred or tax-free. This chapter is probably the most important one of the book (apart from the chapter on keeping costs down), because it discusses the critical concept behind any successful long-term investing strategy: paying oneself first. Anyone that works for a living should get into the habit of setting aside a fixed percentage of their net (after-tax) income, and put it to work building capital.

The second chapter talks about diversification, and is probably a very good idea for the small investor. However, I felt this chapter was a bit under-done, because most small investors are of limited means, and to achieve adequate diversification, one would need a sizable bankroll (about fifty grand, minimum I would say). So, I believe most folks would be better off by automatically investing a fixed percentage of their net, after-tax income in a good, no-load, low cost stock mutual fund. Most index mutual funds allow you to participate with automatic contributions of a hundred bucks, and thus would be a good way to achieve diversification- if, of course, diversification is important to you.

The third chapter talks about holding stocks for the long term, and points out that over long periods of time, stocks have low volatility. 'Tis the short term that causes ulcers.

The fourth chapter talks about doing those things you know and understand, avoiding the sophisticated and exotic, and most important, evaluating the business and not the stock. I felt Tigue could have said more on this, but this is a book for the beginner, so I will not mark him down for it.

The fifth and sixth chapters talk about when to buy in, and having done a fair of investing over the years, I feel that these chapters are potentially misleading. Serious investors buy businesses, and not stocks.

The seventh chapter talks about keeping costs down, and is probably the most important chapter for the seasoned small investor, but second in importance to the novice. Costs do matter because all the players know what you know, and most of you achieve the same results as most everyone else. By netting as much as the return as possible, you can very easily propel yourself far above average. However, I think for the novice the concept of paying oneself first, CONSISTENTLY, is the most important lesson to take away from the book.

Chapter eight talks about knowing when to sell, and is good background for the novice and the seasoned small investor.

Chapter nine talks about making investment decisions, and I have to commend Mr. Tigue for his inclusion of various sources information- websites, periodicals and books, in most chapters so that readers can glean further information. The chapter contains good information overall, and would be most helpful in developing a healthy skepticism among beginning investors.

Chapter ten talks about the various types of bonds one can buy. I found it quite peculiar, and very disturbing, that Mr. Tigue spent no time talking about inflation in this chapter.

Chapter eleven basically talks about the joys of compounding- if you have time on your side. I think he basically got it right, so I won't argue with him there.

So, in sum, this book is geared toward the beginner or novice investor. Seasoned investors would do very well to pay close attention to the chapters on cost containment and investment selection, but can otherwise comfortably skip the rest. If I were to run a short course on long-term investment for the beginner, this is the book that I would use as a teaching tool.

    5 out of 5 stars The Standard & Poor's Guide to Long-term Investing........2007-02-07

If you want to understand long term investing, this book is the key to grasping the fundamentals.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for beginninger!.......2005-10-03

Very useful if you are a beginninger in investing and know nothing about it. Explain in very simple term but at the same time, give quite a detail. I enjoy it. Of course, this book is not mean to make you rich in 24 hrs but does provide some tips on how we should manage our personal investment.

2 out of 5 stars Merely states the obvious........2004-04-27

This book is the most basic "investing book" I have ever read. Essentially, Tigue's guide states you should start investing now invest every month and but good divedends paying stock. Well that's great advice. Why didn't I think about that? (note sarcasm) The problem is that he doesn't really give you a lot of information on how to pick these stocks. The reader who apparently isn't smart enough to know he shouldn't waste money on lottery tickets (one of Tingues suggestions to save money) is somehow suppose to find great stocks that increasingly increase their dividends. He gives some suggestions, but most of these seem to be advancing Standard and Poor's research and other agendas.

Tingue does, however, have one good chapter. In it he explains the necessity of keeping down your costs. Once again this is obvious but he gives a pretty lucent description of fees associated with mutual funds and Direct Stock purchase plans. In the end, you should probably takes Tingues on advice and utilize the library rather than spend money on another investment book you don't need

5 out of 5 stars Great Investment Book.......2004-01-08

This book explains, in simple terms, how to be a successful investor based on proven techniques. It covers almost all aspects of investments (stocks, bonds, funds, and more)

A great book. I changed my investment strategy because of this book. I am also going to keep in mind a lot of the tips that were covered in the book. Good job, Tigue.

                              Book Description

In the tradition of James Herriot, Sylvia Jorrín tells her story of unexpectedly becoming a shepherd in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains.

When Sylvia Jorrín first moved to upstate New York, she had no intention of becoming a farmer. Raised to fear animals of all shapes and sizes, she only wanted to create a life for herself and her friends and family in her twenty-five-room shingle-style house. After a neighboring dairy farmer suggested they use her eighty-five acres of hay fields and woodland to start a farm together, she contacted the South Central New York Resource and Development Center, and they applied for and received a grant of nine free sheep. They soon bought ten more.

                              Then her partner quit.

It was the coldest December on record in the Catskill Mountains. Faced with eighteen pregnant ewes and a ram determined to grind her into a stone wall, and equipped with neither practical nor theoretical knowledge of farming, Sylvia gradually learned to be a farmer, both taming the sheep and conquering the elements.

Fifteen years later, this dairy farmer's granddaughter has a flock of 120 sheep, twenty-one goats, two Jersey cows, fifty Buff Orphington chickens, four Toulouse geese, one house cat and three barn cats, one dog, and a donkey, Guiseppe Patrick Nunzio MacGuire.

Sylvia's Farm is the tale of a life on the farm, and all the hard and important lessons it teaches. Told in short vignettes that span a decade, it is a journal of growth, persistence, and the unexcpected joys that a new day can bring.

                              5 out of 5 stars Sylvia's Farm.......2004-10-30

I enjoyed this book very much. It's very easy to imagine meeting all the animals on the farm because the author describes their personalities in such detail. I went to school nearby and the descriptions of the weather and terrain brought back memories. The essays are more than just another new farmer tale. They are smoothly written and tightly constructed. Some describe the sad or profound moments of life. I'll be rereading Sylvia's Farm whenever I want to visit 'upstate'.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect gift book..........2004-07-15

I read my copy straight through. Simple, yet lyrically written vignettes of both the struggles and the great joys of a hardscrabble farm life, told with the Yankee sensibilities of this serendipitous shepherd.

Not only for those who love animals. A real eye-opener for anyone who has ever thought of sheep as not much more than sweet but somewhat simple-minded bits of fluff. Sylvia Jorrin's journal captures their characters and their quirks. I finished this book hoping that she continues their stories.

this is an extraordinary book. I cannot recomend it highly enough. Read it and re read it. Keep it by your bedside and read it whenever you need to feel alive again. beautiful, lucid, and true. read Sylvia's Farm.

This book gives voice to that connection to the earth that so many yearn for, or remember, or even know daily. It is wonderful when such hard won experiences can be shared and given the grace they deserve, accessible to all. Magic though, how Jorrin by subtle turns brings one to a sense of awe for sheep and goats!

I don't know what the previous reviewer was talking about, obviously someone with a chip on his shoulder. This is an amazing story. When I began this book I almost read it in one sitting, I tried to prolong it for another week but when I was done I wished there was a sequel. The telling of her story draws you in and makes you realize the lifestyle of a farmer is not something most people can do and the greatness of her achievements.

3 out of 5 stars How a city woman became a country woman and learned to love animals.......2005-08-06

If you have the spirit of doing things yourself, an appreciation of living with the land, a love for animals, and an interest in preserving old ways of doing things, you will likely enjoy "Sylvia's Farm."

Sylvia Jorrin purchased a century-old mansion on 85 acres in the Catskill Mountain region of New York a couple of decades ago. Farming and raising sheep weren't even twinkles in her eyes when the house captured her heart and she bought it. Sylvia's tale of how a woman who wasn't very fond of animals ended up with a farm full of them is pleasant and enjoyable reading.

Knowing well New York winters, I fully appreciated, in fact was awed by, her descriptions of the efforts required to tend her flock in those brutal months. Reading about the endless gallons of water she carried over treacherous, icy ground to the sheep each winter convinced me I surely was not cut out for farming. But it also made me wonder why she did not place greater priority on ensuring a non-freezing water supply to the barn. She writes about her concern for falling on ice-coated stone steps and frozen ruts, of thirsty animals eagerly waiting, of the difficulty in getting to them on brutally cold nights. Yet in other passages she talks about handymen she hires to build things on the farm, like beautiful gates and an unusual moveable chicken cook, which creates an intriguing dynamic between priority setting, safety versus beauty. Beauty wins, apparently, over safety. As best as I could discern, she has beautiful handcrafted gates but still struggles with buckets of icy water for dozens of thirsty animals to this day. I would like to have read more about why she made choices like this.

Her writing style is a bit choppy, as she makes extensive use of short, incomplete sentences, and not infrequently this required rereading a passage to make sense of it. Sometimes there is a lack of continuity in relating an event, so the reader is left unsure of what happened. The book appears to be a series of essays written over a long period of years, and so some details are repeated, and others, which I would have enjoyed reading more about, are not explained or described further.

For example, the author at times mentions having a conflict about what clothes to wear to the barn in the morning to care for her sheep, after which she will go to work. In another essay, she talks about having a salary at last. In yet another, she talks about various paying jobs ending and money concerns. On top of all that, she describes extensively her work about the huge house, knitting, cooking meals of a labor-intensive, old country French fashion, baking bread nearly daily, managing weekly deliveries of many bales of hay, which all need to be carried and stacked, canning, caring for the animals, and so on. Complicating it a little more, she doesn't drive. She hired somone to drive her town one day a week, to shop and buy feed for the livestock. Throughout the book I wondered how did she get to that job that required nice clothes? How did she manage to balance the paying work and handle the demands of the immense house and farm? How did she manage with not driving in general, living in a rural region, with no mass transit? She describes putting a lot of work into fixing up the house when she moved in, but details about it are lacking. In one chapter she describes picking keds off a small lamb. The reader can figure out keds must be some type of insect, but it would have helped if she'd said they were nasty little wingless biting flies, to better understand how miserable they made the lamb.

The book would be enriched by more continuity and more details, and a little more editing of those choppy, incomplete sentences. It's an enjoyable story, though, and certainly worth a read, although perhaps not on a bitterly cold night unless you snuggle up with a hot beverage and a comforter. You'll surely want them when she takes you through a brisk Catskill winter.

This autobiographical book tells the true story of boy who battled the adversity of a broken home and charted his own course from being a high-school dropout in a prison cell to a PhD from one of the world's finest scientific universities. The story illustrates the power of ideas and persistence in pursuing goals, and clearly demonstrates the wisdom of Aristotle who said, "All things which humans hold sacred can only come from difficulty, struggle, and the growing idealization of bliss and perfection, which can only flourish in the mind when paradise is utterly lost." The book spans a century, beginning with the birth of the boy's father in 1903. It is interlaced with significant twentieth-century events including the development of science and technology at the dawn of the twentieth century, the Great Depression, World War II, the Eisenhower years, and highlights from Major League baseball. This story has already served as a source of inspiration for wayward youths with whom this man has worked on a volunteer basis. It is a must read for any teenager or parent of a teenager who has run into trouble with the law. Above all, it is a story of tragedy, destruction, redemption and hope that shows why young Americans should never give up on themselves. Some of the profits from each book sold will be used to donate copies of the book to young men and women incarcerated in youth facilities.

                                      Book Description

Rifke (Rosalie Wise Sharp) grew up in North Toronto, which felt to her like a foreign place because there were no other Jewish families there in the late 1930s. Yiddish was spoken in her household, and the food, dress, and customs of Ozarow — the Polish shtetl (small Jewish town) from which her parents emigrated — were all maintained.

Rifke’s peers took lessons in tap-dancing, ice-skating, the piano, and the flute; activities that didn’t translate into the Yiddish vocabulary at the Wises, where only hard work, no nonsense, and book-learning were permitted. Rifke secretly decided to pass as a Gentile, joining a bible class and the Christmas choir. She did not bring home friends, in case they were witness to a Jewish ritual like the koshering of meat. Rifke was guilty about her pursuit of Gentile activities during the war time, when her mother was frantic with fear that their family in Poland was being slaughtered by the Nazis.

In high school, Rifke’s life changed when being “a freak” translated to being “eccentric” and “respectable.” It was there that she met and married her soul mate Isadore, who worked in the construction business, much to her parents’ disappointment. Prosperity, took time; however, Isadore’s audacious dream to build a world class hotel chain, The Four Seasons, came to pass. In this memoir, Rosalie Sharp casts a wry and self-deprecating look back on her childhood, with anecdotes about the chance events and comic ironies that make up a life.
