Book Description
Despite the regional currency crisis of 1997-1998, Asia-Pacific economies continue to be among the most attractive markets in the world. Japanese, American, and European firms have invested heavily in the past decades, and now are positioning themselves to take advantage of the post-Asian recovery, phenomenal Chinese growth rates, and deepening economic liberalization. This pathbreaking work focuses on understanding the market and nonmarket strategies employed by US firms to boost their share of the developing Asian market and to rally the US government in support of their initiatives. In addition to advancing a novel theoretical framework to analyze strategy, the book contains an overview chapter focuses on US investment and trade trends in Asia and original case studies of the banking, automobile, telecommunications, chemical, software, and electronics sectors that provide insight into winning strategies in Asia.

Customer Reviews:
A Comprehensive "Survey" of The Full Scope of The Literature of EMT.......2005-12-31
My career as a retail stockbroker for six years, then for twenty-seven years as an institutional stockbroker selling portfolio analytics and investment research to professional asset managers (pension plan managers, mutual fund managers, and hedge fund managers) has provided me with the opportunity to explore modern portfolio theory, market efficiency, and the investment returns of active managers. I have read many of the books and academic papers Professor Ross uses as resources in this very coherent and thorough explanation of why the attempt to "beat the market" is futile, and fraught with risk.
Professor Ross uses his deep understanding of statistics, economics, and behavioral finance to explain market efficiency. He weaves a tight, coherent, and entertaining explanation of why the statistical evidence (manager performance databases) demonstrate most active managers cannot sustain above market performance for any significant time period. And he explains the risks of believing that the few active managers who have "outperformed" will continue to do so.
Professor Ross' book is the drawstring that pulls the elements of the Efficient Market Theory into a focused, concise, entertaining, and very readable format. I give Professor Ross' book my highest recommendation.
Intelligent Investing for Retirement.......2005-03-03
This is the best book I have seen regarding investing for retirement. Don't waste your time or money trying to beat the market, just understand Dr. Ross' basic principles for dealing with a volatile market. Forget the "get rich quick" models and come down to earth and use common sense and indexing. The first 2 chapters alone are worth the price of the book.
Contentful and serious, yet understandable.......2004-07-12
This book is an excellent and easily understood survey of the arguments in favor of the Efficient Market Hypothesis. Material is compellingly presented, abstract ideas are made easy to understand, and strong arguments are put forth in favor of passive funds (ie Index Funds) as against actively managed funds.
This book is one of few business books directed toward the general public that isn't trendy, insulting, ridiculous, or trite. I intend to buy this book for the next friend of mine that starts "day trading" or doing anything similar.
WAKE UP AND READ THIS BOOK!.......2004-06-11
I just finished this book and it has completely changed what I think about the stock market. The author starts off with background information on basic economics which is then used throughout the book to prove why and to what degree the stock market is impossible to beat. Before reading this book I was an avid technical analyst and despite my horrific returns, I felt that beating the market just took some more talent, skill, and a bit of luck. After reading this book--and realizing how sensible each of the author's arguments are--I've decided to face the facts and hang up my trendlines for good. Although the book is quite frankly disheartening, I am glad that I read it before I wasted any more of my hard earned money trying to find hot stocks.
The only thing that I felt should have been more thoroughly covered in the book was the effect that emotion plays in the stock market. Clearly the market isn't quite as efficent as the author believes when we see stocks such as amazon and yahoo get bid up to such astronomical levels in the late 90s. And it would be tough to explain how efficient stock prices are to those who were smart enough to short those stocks in 2000.
All in all though, this is an amazing and eye-opening book to say the least. Anyone who tries to beat the market through actively managed mutual funds or through trading NEEDS to read this book. Well written, easy to understand, and convincing as hell. Take the commission fee from your next trade and use it to buy this book instead.
Highly useful!.......2003-12-09
Correctly understanding the securities markets and how the financial industry ticks is critical to one's financial health. No other book I know does a better job in wading through the patently false, unscientific nonsense that banks, brokerages, the financial media and nine out of ten book authors typically disseminate. Why to they do that? Simple. It maximises their commissions or circulations at the expense of investors' net returns. Why is it simple? Because a large number of investors believe the rubbish that Wall Street and the media yells at them since it sounds somehow plausible and sophisticated. Other "eductated" investors allow their greed and "overconfidence" to get the better of them and hence fall for the same hogwash. This book explains it all and it is surprisingly entertaining. Strong buy!!

Book Description
The purpose of this panel study of nonprofit organizations in the metropolitan area of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, over the period from 1980 to 1994 is to explain why some nonprofit organizations grew and others shrank, and why some NPOs survived and others died during this decade and a half. The authors are particularly concerned with the different tactics or strategies employed by the NPOs and the consequences that these choices had for the organization.
The research yielded some striking results for understanding NPO performance. Galaskiewicz and Bielefeld have been able to explain why some organizations use different strategies; to describe the effects of strategy use on growth and decline of revenues in different funding streams (government, earned, and donated income); and to account for the unintended effects of strategy use on organizational climate and structure. Survival
and growth depend upon the organization's ability to juggle its commitments to donors, grantmakers, members, and service populations, while trying to keep costs down and maintain worker morale. The authors show that often these tasks are at odds with one another, and this impasse keeps many NPOs in a constant state of emergency and management crisis. Whether or not organizations prosper in such an environment depends upon their choice of tactic or strategic response.
Not much is known about the long-term behavior of the charitable and philanthropic organizations that constitute a "third sector" of the economy. This book admirably fills that void. It should speak not only to students of organizational theory who want to understand more about how NPOs function, but also to practitioners, donors, and government agencies concerned with the tactics and strategies elected by those entrusted with funding and planning the work of the organizations studied here, and others like them elsewhere.

Big Muddy Blues: True Tales and Twisted Politics Along Lewis and Clark's Missouri River
ASIN: 0700606483 |
Book Description
Snaking 2,540 miles from Montana to the Mississippi River, the Missouri is the longest waterway in the nation. Its basin--stretching 530,000 square miles--extends broadly into ten states and twenty-five Indian reservations. For millions of years the river and its tributaries meandered untamed. But that irrevocably changed with the passage of the Pick-Sloan Plan, part of the Flood Control Act of 1944.
In River of Promise, River of Peril, John Thorson takes the first comprehensive look at how and why the Missouri River basin--now with six major dams and hundreds of miles of navigation canals--has become one of the most significantly altered drainage systems in the country. He also looks at the consequences.
The Pick-Sloan Plan, he argues, has not fared well over time, particularly in its failure to provide an effective blueprint for regional river management. Persistent conflicts over the river, he contends, illuminate important weaknesses of federalism in dealing with regional resources, the most glaring being the exclusion of any proactive role for Indian tribal governments.
To support his argument, Thorson examines the physical, demographic, and political features of the river basin; analyzes the comprehensive river development that gave birth to the Pick-Sloan Plan; reveals why the original goals of the legislature were never achieved; explores the deep-seated and continuing tensions between basin governments; and investigates how Indian tribes, the river's ecology, and federalism have been damaged as the river has been developed. He also describes the various associations created and later abandoned from the sixties to the eighties and assesses their virtues and limitations.
Thorson sees in the story of the Missouri River Basin the vertical and horizontal strains of federalism--the states chafing against federally mandated and controlled projects exacerbated by the lack of constitutional guidance for handling conflicts among neighboring states and with Indian nations. Not just bent on spotlighting problems, Thorson also evaluates different approaches for improved river system management and recommends a Missouri River management institution based on environmentally sensitive policies, a strong state role, and full participation by the basin's tribal governments.

Book Description
Water is vital for the survival of human beings. The increasing demand for water from population growth, rapid industrialization, urbanization and expanding agriculture is so high that the present availability is not sufficient. This is particularly serious for the countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. With each passing day the gap between the needs of the growing population in these regions and the diminishing fresh water resources widens. Countries are meeting increasing water demand by building reservoirs and by diverting water from one area to another. When the water belongs to an international river system, these measures lead to riparian conflicts. However, water scarcity not only brings conflict to these regions, but also plays its part in building co-operation.
In several international river basins in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, competing and disputing riparian countries are now moving towards a co-operative sharing arrangement. The signing of agreements on water sharing may be easy, but the real problem is how to keep these arrangements on track. Such agreements can positively contribute to peace and co-operation by addressing future needs, making sustainable decisions and being progressive in their management. This book looks at the these current stresses and likely future scenarios for this vitally important subject.

Book Description
An evaluation of the use of water by the riparian Central Asian states, with a primary focus on Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The paper discusses the basin's water resource geography along with other critical water issues including irrigated agriculture, the Aral Sea problem, water sharing among the basin states, national water politics, and the future of water management. These complicated management issues are central to understanding and tackling the environmental and agricultural challenges confronting Central Asia, and also have the potential to generate conflicts both within and between states.

Book Description
A multi-disciplinary analysis of the evolution of water politics and policy by an international team of distinguished experts. Water management in the Middle Ages in Europe, its evolution in the USA, the elaboration of the European Water Framework Directive, the British experience of water management, the over-exploitation of African aquifers, and the evolution of the water situation in Southern Africa are all examined. This volume underlines the fact that only an integrative and interdisciplinary understanding can lead to genuinely improved water management practices that will not benefit some social groups at the expense of others.
