Book Description
Honor Your Anger is a clearly written, insightful look at a topic that concerns everyone. You can indeed learn to understand and manage your anger, and this book will show you how."
Robert Epstein, Ph.D., West Coast Editor, Psychology Today, Director Emeritus, Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies, University Research Professor, California School of Professional Psychology
"A critical first step for people who have trouble getting in touch with their anger and expressing it in direct and appropriate ways."
Virginia Williams, Ph.D., coauthor of Anger Kills and Lifeskills
Do you act out your anger in destructive or underhanded ways? Or do you suppress your anger and turn other people's abuse and criticism against yourself? Anger is a normal, healthy emotion. But if it's channeled in negative directions, anger can do real damage to you and your loved ones.
In this provocative, healing book, psychotherapist Beverly Engel explains why your personal anger style may be hurting your relationships, your career, and yourself. She then shows you step by step how to transform a negative anger style into a positive one. Once you've discovered how to express your anger in healthy ways, you'll find that anger can empower you, motivate you to make important changes, and help you gain a sense of control over your life.

How to better understand anger and manage it to achieve emotional health
When most people think of someone having a problem with anger they think the person has a "bad temper" or is a negative and unhealthy person. But in this provocative book, respected author and therapist Beverly Engel shows how anger is in fact a normal and healthy emotion. She also describes the unhealthy anger styles, including being afraid to express anger, expressing anger in underhanded ways, and allowing others to act out your anger for you. Engel shows readers how to create an anger style that is not only healthy but life transforming. She combines prescriptive action steps with inspiring personal stories for a positive, easy-to-follow approach to managing anger, whether the problem is violent outbursts or passive-aggressive behavior.
Beverly Engel (Los Osos, CA) is the author of twelve nonfiction books and has been a psychotherapist for over 25 years. She conducts professional training programs and has appeared on many national television shows, including Oprah, Donahue, Ricki Lake, and CNN. Her books include Loving Him Without Losing Him (0-471-40979-0) and The Power of Apology (0-471-21892-8), which was a finalist in the Books for a Better Life Awards competition.
Customer Reviews:
good look at understanding anger styles.......2006-08-29
A good example of understanding, rather than controlling your anger. I liked the typology of anger styles and descriptions. I like the promotion of healthy anger, rather than managing anger expression. I would of liked more data on repressed anger. A better read than any other on the shelf!
This book gives you control so you don't lose control.......2004-07-25
This book teaches that anger is OK if it is understood and expressed correctly. First know if your anger is justified. Then how not to act irrationally with long term damaging consequences. How to express you anger that is fitting to the situation, or not express your anger. And the book goes into the many diffrent types of anger. Written in a compelling easy to read style kept me riveted to this book. After reading this k I got insight and understanding about my own anger and others that has helped me to greatly. 5 stars for an underreviewed book
Great book!.......2004-03-05
I bought this book for my husband who has a problem controlling his anger but as I looked through it I realized that I had a problem with anger myself. I've been afraid of expressing my anger most of my life because I had a very explosive father. I didn't want to become like him and I was afraid of what I'd do if I ever let my anger out. Engel showed me how to get in touch with my anger and how to release it in safe ways. I feel so grateful for the sound advice in this book. It gave me permission to be angry and helped me to understand that I have a right to my anger.I've even been able to deal with my anger toward my abusive father. I recommend this book to anyone who has issues with anger.

At a time when cookbook authors were covering great stretches of territory (China the Beautiful, say) or claiming entire landfalls of subject matter (Seafood the Beautiful, say), James McNair came along in the mid-1980s with slim volumes dedicated to single subjects and designed with an exacting eye. Beautiful books, really. And they were passive books in the sense that McNair was not out to assault anyone with his style or ideas, or with hundreds of recipes packed between covers. His intention was to share his enthusiasm for great food and beauty, but keep it light. Make it easy: see the picture; make the dish.
What we have here with James McNair's Favorites is the master of the single subject's first fat book, his compendium of greatest hits. This big boy is over 600 pages long. For the food archaeologist, it's the Rosetta Stone of American catering and upscale takeout, covering the last 15 years of the century. Press your nose to the glass of any chic deli, fresh pasta shop, or trendy market and you will find displayed some of the contents of this book. McNair's favorites are the comfort food for the end of the millennium.
Blueberry Corn Pancakes? Sunshine Granola? Any cookbook that starts with breakfast starts right. Then, and only then, he's on to appetizers. And this section, like the one on desserts, is indeed long. The message is graze first, then have dessert. Simple, no? McNair moves from Granny's Onion Dip to Chutney Glazed Cheese to Hummus to Seviche, Satay, and Thai Toast. Desserts start with Venetian Glazed Oranges and end with Passion Fruit Cake.
An über-chapter called "Moving On" includes sections on soups, salads, noodles, pasta, polenta, risotto, gnocchi, and pizza. You'll find Sichuan Hot and Sour Soup back to back with Louisiana Gumbo, Caesar Salad back to back with Panzanella, Thai Noodles vs. Spaghetti Carbonara--and a whole delicious world of food in between. The same is true for other chapters: you'll find fish, vegetable, meat, and poultry main dishes from all corners. The only criterion for inclusion is McNair's enthusiasm for a dish, and he has proved the value over the years of his Good Food Radar. There are sections on condiments and relishes, various breads, and all the basics such as stocks and classic sauces.
There is a selection of those famous, well-designed McNair food photos that can set the most unrepentant misanthrope to menu and party planning. But this is not only a book for special occasions. If McNair has one credo, it would seem to be Eat Great Food at Every Meal. And that includes breakfast. --Schuyler Ingle

Customer Reviews:
A cookbook to be used and enjoyed!.......2006-12-29
This cook book is in my top 50 books (of over 1000 cook books) for it's no nonsense approach to having uncomplicated recipes that taste very good.
I've never read Mr. McNair's 30 some brief previous single subject books that he distilled to get this 600 page book of favorites. I'm glad he did the work for you and me. He truly offers a world of recipes, from Asian to Middle Eastern, and Italian to Swedish and American with Thanksgiving.
His instructions are clear in each recipe. What I like most is that he gives his favorite recipe, and then gives 15 variations to try. For cornbread, for example, he gives a Northern style, with optional sugar and 50:50 cornmeal:flour, and then lists variations that include Bacon/crackling cornbread, buttermilk, cheese, chile, custard, double corn, herbed, nutty, seeded, and Tex-Mex variations.
Similarly, for creme brulee, he cautions not to get air bubbles mixed in, tells clearly how to cook each step and what to avoid ("bake until set, but still wobbles like gelatin when the containers are shaken very gently"). He then takes the custards from their waterbath to the refrigerator till chilled, cautions to rermove all moisture from the tops before sprinkling with sugar and torching or broiling, then letting the melted sugar set firm before serving.
If one had never made a creme brulee before, you'd have yours like a pro with his simple precise instructions. Again, the part I like best is the variations, and for this he has: banana custard, Cajeta (caramelized goat milk) custard, caramel, carrot, chocolate, citrus variants, coconut, coffee, fruited, ginger, lavender, maple, mint, pumpkin/winter squash and various spirited custards...Wow!
Want to bake a pie? He has 5 pages on just how to bake a basic pie crust, and has crust variations such as almond crust, brown sugar, cheddar, chocolate, cornmeal, cream cheese, spice, sweet and whole wheat.
These are not trendy stacks of food, or food foams made with expensive paco jet commercial devices; these are very tasty comfort foods, simply, properly and lovingly cooked.
Other items include South African Bobotie, and beef and wild mushroom stroganoff and smoked chicken salad.
I am minimally disappointed in that while he says he has been a judge for Sutter Home's Build a Better Burger competition, his "better burgers" page has only one burger recipe, and that uses worcestershire sauce, optional crumbled cheese, and a loaf of French bread. John, where's the beef?
His photography is good, not great, with the color photos having the flat, slightly underexposed lighting of the 90's-when this was published...not a negative to me.
As this is currently out of print, get this used on Amazon or at a garage sale, it's well worth reading. For cookbook writers, it's equally well worth emulating.
Delicious & Reliable.......1999-11-18
I received this as a gift and have really enjoyed it. I've tried a dozen or so recipes and they all been delicious. It's true that it does not have the number of photos McNair devotees are used to, but I would say that every recipe is a winner- perhaps not true of some of McNair's single subject books. The directions are very clearly written and easy to follow. Many easy enough for weekday, after work dinners; others require more prep either in cooking or shopping (although good guidance is provided on more hard-to-find ingredients). The best part is the a great range of recipes- a one-stop source for inspiration.

Afternoon Delights James McNair.......2005-09-21
Recipes can be found in so many books. Nothing out of the ordinary. I was a bit disappointed for a James McNair book.
Bravo! The book to buy!.......2003-08-21
The recipes in this book are easy to understand and carry through. The cookies are big, delicious, and a joy to make. Awesome book!
Just the recipes I wanted!.......2002-09-19
I saw James and Andrew teach at Sur la Table last fall and I thought their recipes were delicious! I remain particularly smitten by the old-fashioned brownies (with frosting!) and the gingersnaps. There are several other typical cafe recipes in here--biscotti, some tasty scones, more cookies. There aren't a ton of recipes, but every one of them is for something you already know you love--no weirdos. The book is beautiful and the recipes work--what more could you ask for? Maybe someone to make the coffee.

Book Description
Designed for use by professionals and graduate-level students in public administration and not-for-profit management, this is a comprehensive, clearly written guide to the use of statistical analysis in the management of nonprofit organizations. The volume emphasizes statistical models that use more than one variable and is unique in presenting multivariate statistics specifically with the public and nonprofit manager in mind. Examples throughout have been chosen to be relevant to the not-for-profit organization and each chapter contains several "real-life" illustrations of how statistical techniques can be used in actual practice. In addition to explaining statistical methods and techniques in detail, the author focuses on why statistics should be used and helps the reader obtain an intuitive grasp of the rationale behind the statistics. Because she stresses the logic of proofs and the limitations of results rather than the pure mathematics of statistical derivation, the volume is accessible to students and managers with only a little statistical background. Following a chapter that introduces the concept of multivariate analysis, Stiefel explains simple and multiple regression models in detail. Later chapters discuss other techniques that are becoming widely used in not-for-profit organizations: logit and probit analysis, time-series models, and simultaneous equation models. Two types of examples are used to make the material immediately relevant to the not-for-profit manager: real-world examples culled from professional journals and reports in a variety of fields including health care, education, finance, budgeting, and administrative science; and examples of results obtained using statistical programs run on a personal computer. Thus the book enables the reader to understand and interpret both the statistics used in professional articles and statistical results as they appear on computer printouts. Four appendixes review basic statistical methods such as simple summation operators, the Pearson Correlation Coefficient, and hypothesis testing for the sample mean.

He had the strength to endure tho he never gave up. Dee-Dee wrote some of the ramones best songs and was wonderfull. One of my favortie parts of the book is describing how he passes out in his garlic steak n woke up with puffy eyes n mucis dripping from them saying maybe no one ull notice, no dee-dee i bet they did:). Dee-Dee got clean and turned his life round by the end of the book n maried a total hottie to:)

Love the Ramones, this book could have been better.......2000-12-11
I know that this book was written in a true Punk sense, but it still left me hanging. I wish Dee Dee could have dished the dirt a little more (especially about the lyrics to 53rd & 3rd) I wish it could have been longer and a little more detailed.
Give him shock treatment.......2000-07-19
Really funny. I never heard of anyone having a car accident inside of a car wash.
Such a waste..............2000-05-03
(This book reminded me of Hubert Selby's "The Demon" - same narrative, similar story line of a messed up individual!) There are some AWESOME glimpses into the Ramones, but a majority of the book is listening to Dee Dee complain, whine, blame, etc. I tore out the pictures, and threw the book out - I knew I wouldn't ever want to read it again.

Money Management for Kids.......2000-03-31
If you are looking to have devotions at home, but do not know where to begin, stop looking. This book and the entire series are excellent. They teach biblical values through hands on expereince. As a pastor of a church, I am recommending this series to all members who have children. You do not need to know theology or know how to teach, just have a desire to set aside time one night per week and enjoy time teaching, learning and growing with your kids in a Christ centered fun way.

Book Description
This book tells the extraordinary story of Peter Caulder, a free African American settler in the Arkansas Territory. After serving as a rifleman in the war of 1812, Caulder established a community of free-born African Americans in northern Arkansas and was largely accepted by his white neighbors until an 1859 expulsion law forced the community to flee the state and settle in Missouri. To document such a man's life, and to determine how he thrived within a slave society and came to join a free black backwoods community, Higgins has skillfully interwoven oft-neglected primary sources--many of which are reproduced here--from around the country; and through the information revealed in these materials a fascinating--and groundbreaking--account of Caulder, his family, and his community has emerged.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting.......2007-06-18
Before reviewing, in the interest of full disclosure, I should say that I am Peter Caulder's great-great-grandson.
This came as something of a shock to me, as I'd been told all my life that I was half Dutch and half Cherokee-Choctaw. Nothing about my features, save for a tan that lasts in some degree all year and a high resistance to sunburn, give much of a clue, and I generally think of myself as half white and half Amerind.
Yes, I'm certain of this; I have fond memories of my grandfather - who also had no immediately obvious african features - Henry Elbert Caulder, who is on the last line of the Caulder geneaology in the book. He had three fingers on one hand, having lost them in a combine accident, and died quite some time ago...early 1990's I believe.
So I have a bias.
That said, I really enjoyed the book. For one thing, it gives an insight into a totally different kind of black man in the early 19th century than we are generally led to believe existed - a free sharecropper who joined the army and served for 14 years, helped establish a small colony of free blacks in north-central Arkansas, helped build Ft. Hood...I am generally of empirical mind, but I didn't find enough lacking in the documentation to detract from the value of the information presented or the way it was presented.
I'll concede that much of it is second-hand and speculation, but the basic facts - that Caulder was a free black man born in South Carolina who joined the US Armed Forces with several other colored men (and family members) in his area as 'seconds,' a fairly common practice at that time (and long before the Tuskeegee Airmen, not to detract from their noble accomplishments!) There's no question that he was well-regarded by his fellow soldiers and superior officers, and he seems to have served well, if not in remarkable enough fashion to earn notable commendations.
Regrettably, he also deserted after 14 years, by all indications to be with a woman he loved and help start the aforementioned colony.
There is also no question that when Arkansas made free blacks illegal, a substantial percentage of the commune, including Caulder, moved to south-central Missouri and put down roots there. He still has descendants living there, including at least one of Henry Elbert Caulder's sisters, I *think*. I'd have to ask my mom.
Beyond my obvious personal interest though, I appreciate this book for exposing me to a new way of thinking about what life was like for black people in the years before the Civil War really started building. There is further indication in the book that Peter's father, Moses, was married to a white woman and they lived as husband and wife. Prior to Moses, there seems to be no information, so I can't say if any of my ancestors were slaves or not, and I hope I can say without offending anyone that I don't much care.
It's a fascinating, well-written story that will give you pause to challenge your own notions about the history of race in America, and I think it's well worth reading, regardless of my personal relation to the book.
I *would* like to thank Billy D. Higgins - with whom I've never spoken, nor has anyone in my family that I know of, he seems to have worked exclusively from publicly available information - for putting this book together, both from the personal point of view and from that of a reader.
A Stranger And a Sojourner: A Stranger to Facts.......2006-04-06
The book lacks any proper documentation, and it is full of speculation, in other words, a work of fiction. Higgins portrays the entire population, of Free Persons of Color in Marion County Arkansas as black, this is not the case, most of these families living on white River during that time frame that Higgins talks about in his book, were indeed Native Americans, some of these Indians were of mixed heritage, but I doubt if there were any full Blacks as Higgins tries to make you believe. If Higgins would have done any real research he would have known that there can be a difference between a Free Black Person and a Free Person of Color, anyone atempting to write a book, that covers the issue of race, should make an attemp to do proper research on the subject, before they put pen to paper .
Anyone wishing to use Higgins book for genealogical research is wasting thier time,it is full of errors in most of the ancestrial lines he quotes, but if you have time to spare and like fiction, you might enjoy it, that is if you can work your way around all of the ifs, maybes and probably so's.
A VALUABLE ADDITION .......2005-02-03
Billy D Higgins presents information in this book that broadens our understanding of US history. He tells the life story of Peter Caulder, a man of color, who grew up in an integrated rural community in Marion County, South Carolina where free black and white yeomen lived and cooperated in apparent harmony. Peter, his father, and several friends were recruited into the local milita unit as substitutes for more affluent neighbors and then into the US Rifle Regiment. These people of color served in an integrated army unit during the War of 1812 and, in Caulder's case, long after.
Caulder remained in the army for fourteen years, spending most of his time at frontier posts in northwestern Arkansas Territory. After leaving the army, he became a landowner and taxpayer in a free black enclave on the White River in Arkansas.
Unfortunately Higgins as created his book out of very limited documentation by padding fact with speculation, repitition, and extraneous information. Peter Caulder, like most of the people around him, was illiterate. The written record of his life is scantily recorded in census counts, army records and reports, sutlers' accounts, tax rolls, and the accounts of the few literate people with whom he came in contact. The book is awash in "may have", "might have", "perhaps", and "probably". The factual material is sufficient for a scholarly article, but not a book.
I still recommend it. In addition to telling Caulder's story, the book describes military life on the southeastern frontier and supplies interesting glimpses of US-Indian interaction in the wake of the Louisiana Purchase. Like NEGRO COWBOYS by Durham & Everett, A STRANGER AND A SOJOURNER compels the reader to rearrange the furniture in his attic of preconceptions.

WASTE OF MONEY.......2006-06-21
DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY IT POINTS OUT THE OBVIOUS T. LUCAS
Of limited value, even on your first move.......2006-03-01
The sole market segment this book MAY assist are people who have never moved. The points made are so obvious that it could have been written by your next door neighbor, not an "insider." The only "insider" aspect to this paperweight is that someone on the inside saw a market opportunity to cash in on a segment of the moving population with a catchy title and nice cover graphics. The "ABCs" of relocating, as PART I is described, offers about a couple of paragraphs on MAJOR topics ranging from "Negotiating a Profitable Home Sale" to "Insurance, Finance and Estate Guidelines".....hardly subjects that can even be skimmed in a few paragraphs. Not that I would expect a treatis, but to suggest in the index that such subjects are addressed, is nearly misreprestation. In sum, if you read the index, you have read the book, because the information which follows, to be generous, touches on each subject.

The Sacred Pipe.......2007-01-10
Black Elk is and was sacred Elder. Through his life we are given this knowledge. He has helped many to understand the way of the Lakota; following the natural law. While not all Lakota follow the traditional ways as closely as they did before the arrival of the white man, they are still connected to these rites and inhierently understand these teachings. It's only to outside world that these things become suprising moments of clarity. Joseph Epes Brown took time before it was too late, to record these teachings, which is a blessing and a gift of knowledge to all who would read, understand and heed these words. If you wish to learn what dwells is in the hearts of Native American people, you would do well to open this book and your minds.
Profound and deeply rewarding. .......2006-07-27
I haven't actually finished this book yet but I'm looking forward to doing so. This spirituality is deeply sophisticated and elevated. I think the whole world is greatly indebted to the American Indian Nation. Furthermore, thank you for wonderful service.
Gain an understanding of the Sioux way of thinking.......2004-04-01
A beautiful book. You can learn about Siuox religious practie and beliefs. The reader will come away with a sense of how similar religios faiths can be. The Sioux it turns out are not so different from Christians, Hindus or any other group that uses faith to guide people through what is both difficult and beautiful in life.
Rituals Described in Great Detail.......2004-03-08
I recommend reading this book if you are interested in the rituals and culture of the Lakota. It provides clear and interesting discussions of major rituals that form important components of their way of life. The material is drawn largely from interviews with Black Elk, and the writing really explains significance of important details in the various practices. The book also provides a good basis for understanding how the cultural practices fit into Lakota history. This book is also a fine one to read in relation to "Black Elk Speaks," "The 6th Grandfather," and "When the Tree Flowered."
If you want peace, read this book.......2004-01-31
Joseph Epes Brown was fortunate in meeting men who possessed great human and spiritual qualities, especially Black Elk who had a unique quality of power, kindliness and sense of mission. Born in 1862, Black Elk grew up when his people had the freedom of the plains, hunted bison; he fought at Little Bighorn and at Wounded Knee Creek and knew Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Red Cloud, and American Horse. He traveled with Buffalo Bill to Italy, France and England. During his youth Black Elk was instructed in the sacred love of his people by Whirlwind Chaser, Black Road and Elk Head from whom he learned the history and deep meanings of his people's spiritual heritage. Through prayer, fasting and deep understanding of his heritage, Black Elk became a wise man, receiving visions and acquiring special powers to be used for the good of his nation. Because of his sense of mission Black Elk wanted this book to be written so that the reader could gain a better understanding of the truths of the Indian traditions.
In his foreword Black Elk tells us: "There is much talk of peace among the Christians, yet this is just talk. Perhaps it may be, and this is my prayer, through our sacred pipe, and through this book in which I shall explain what our pipe really is, peace may come to those people who can understand, an understanding which must be of the heart and not of the head alone. Then they will realize that we Indians know the One true God, and that we pray to Him continually. I have wished to make this book through no other desire than to help my people in understanding the greatness and truth of our own tradition, and also to help in bringing peace upon the earth, not only among men, but within men and between the whole of creation."
The wisdom of the Indians is based on such concepts as "The Earth is your Grandmother and Mother, and She is sacred. Every step that is taken upon her should be as a prayer" and "Every dawn as it comes is a holy event, every day is holy." The Indians developed their own religion based on the gift of the sacred pipe given by a very beautiful woman who approached two Lakota Indians out hunting. One of them had bad intentions and he and the mysterious woman were wrapped in a cloud. When the cloud lifted the sacred woman was standing there and at her feet was the man who was nothing but bones and terrible snakes were eating him. Black Elk interpreted this as an eternal truth: "Any man who is attached to the senses and to the things of this world, is one who lives in ignorance and is being consumed by snakes which represent his own passions." The mysterious woman presented the tribe with a pipe and stone, explaining the significance of the gift. On her departure she said to the Standing Hollow Horn: "Behold this pipe! Always remember how sacred it is, and treat it as such, for it will take you to the end. Remember, in me there are four ages. I am leaving now, but I shall look back upon your people in every age, and at the end I shall return." These four ages find a parallel in the Hindu tradition during which true spirituality becomes increasingly obscured until the cycle closes with catastrophe, after which the primordial spirituality is restored and the cycle begins once again.
Through the rite of the keeping of the soul, the Indians purified the souls of the dead and increased love for one another. This rite is followed by the rite of purification, known to us as the sacred lodge. The ritual of "Crying for a Vision" was used long before the coming of the sacred pipe. Crazy Horse received most of his power through "lamenting" or crying for a vision for some great event or ordeal such as going on the war path. "But perhaps the most important reason for 'lamenting' is that it helps us to realize our oneness with all things, to know that all things are our relatives; and then in behalf of all things we pray to Wakan-Tanka that He may give to us knowledge of Him who is the source of all things, yet greater than all things." Chapters are devoted to the Sun dance - one of the greatest rites; to "The making of Relatives" reflecting the relationship between man and Wakan-Tanka; preparing a girl for womanhood; and the rite of "The Throwing of the ball." Through these ceremonies we learn how the Sioux have come to terms with God, nature and their fellow man.
If you question the superiority and validity of the goals of western society; if you are conducting a self-examination; if you are re-evaluating the premises and orientations of our society; if you are concerned about our environmental crisis; if you are concerned about the problems created by highly developed technology; if you are questioning our basic values concerning life, nature and the destiny of man; if you are open to look at the models represented by the American Indians; if you want talk about peace to become action about peace you will find something of value in this book.
