Excellent 1st Novel by Canadian Writer!.......2006-12-26

Wow. What an effort by Tanzanian born Anar Ali. The first story of Shamshu Jiwa, vying, although passively, to take over his father company in the presence of his older brother sets the stage for more stories of culture yet to unfold. Tremendous insight is given into the large South Asian community and culture as they existed in the non-traditional surroundings of East Africa. A must read for any world traveller or 'Citizen of the World'!

Hailed by the New York Times as "one of the best soldiers this country has produced," Frank Ross McCoy was, throughout his distinguished career, much more than just a good soldier. As friend and confidant to such leaders as Theodore Roosevelt, Leonard Wood, and Henry Stimson, he disproves the standard view of the military before 1940 as having no role in American foreign policy. Instead, as A. J. Bacevich ably demonstrates, McCoy was intimately involved in the development of U.S, foreign relations from McKinley's administration to Truman's.

McCoy began his military career with Leonard Wood in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. After the war, he and Wood (who became military governor) worked together to establish democratic reforms in Cuba. There followed for McCoy a succession of difficult and sometimes dangerous assignments: the Philippines (during the Moro uprising), Mexico, France (as commander during World War I), Turkey and Armenia, the Philippines again, Nicaragua (during Sandino's guerrilla campaign), Bolivia and Paraguay, and China (with the Lytton Commission investigating Japan's invasion of Manchuria). Following a series of stateside appointments, McCoy served finally as chairman of the Far Eastern Commission, an international body created to determine the fate of postwar Japan.

Based on exhaustive research in McCoy's personal papers and official records, Bacevich shows that McCoy's career provides a unique perspective both on American foreign policy and on civil-military relations.

Superb WWI Memoir.......2006-08-12

French Sgt Maj. Paul Maze, served as a volunteer interpreter and one man recon patrol for the British Army, first with the Scots Greys, then with 2nd Division, then with Gen. Gough and finally Gen. Rawlinson. Maze is a pretty unique character. In 1914, he volunteered for the French Army, but was turned down on medical grounds. He could have sat out the war with complete justification. Still wanting to serve, he attached himself to the British, bought his own uniform [with Sgt. Major rank] and a Triumph motorcycle and became an invaluable aid on division, corps and then army staffs. His personal accounts of the Somme and the attacks on and defense of Pozieres are absolutely hair-raising. And on top of everything else, he's a good storyteller and writer. I highly recommend the book!

Mr. Davis' book is an inspiring yet very personal account of the men charged with fighting one of history's bloodiest wars. Filled with interesting facts and accounts of the generals' lives, this book is the closest thing we have (and may ever have) to really knowing these great men.

This is the only book of it's kind - all the generals of WW1 - there is a picture and short bio of each. Henry Davis has written a book that has filled a niche for any one with an interest in American Military history!

There are a lot of entries about a lot of ideas and thinkers. The information is accurate and presented in a dry informative matter. This can be a useful reference work, but is of limited value to anyone who wishes to understand any of the entries in a deep way. It also is relentlessly even- toned in presentation, an advantage in one sense but in another one which defers continued reading.

This book should be on everyone's shelf. This book is easy to read and is essentialy a dictionary of various philosophies. You won't get much insight from this book, nor will it maintain your interest very long. It is designed as a dictionary, not to be read from cover to cover. Use it as a reference rather than leisure reading.

I Needed This One Years Ago.......2002-12-07

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading or studying - period. I had returned to college after a twelve year absence to study history (I'd studied business before, yuck) and found many concepts, names, and ideas either new to me or fairly well forgotten. "A World of Ideas" became an absolute life-saver and, furthermore, a book that I began to peruse out of enjoyment and interest.

Contrary to another review, there is a list of sources for further reading. However, I doubt the mere 28 books listed will satisfy most needs, a fuller more specific listing would have been the icing on the cake. I usually reference "A World of Ideas" to clarify ideas from specific readings. In this case, the book in hand will usually have additional sources available in its notes and bibliography. Also, if you are taking a class, you can ask your professor. They love talking with interested students and can steer you towards appropriate books, or away from less useful ones.

Since the research position is a new one in our organization I was starting from the ground and working up. I needed some instant answers as to where my researcher could start looking for information on donors until I could obtain professional training for my staff. I checked this book out at the library but have found that I need to have my own copy. I rarely purchase books so that says alot.

Good Overview but Makes it Sound Too Good to Be True.......2002-10-21

The book does a good job at providing a very basic introduction
to land development. However, it does not sufficiently address several key elements:

1. The importance of due diligence. Before purchasing property, one should conduct due diligence to ensure that there won't be environmental issues, wetlands issues, indian burial grounds, endangered species, protected plant life (trees, etc), protected wildlife, etc. Any one of these could severely limit the future use of the land. This book does not emphasize this enough.

2. The potential difficulties in finding buyers for subdivided land. Just because you buy it and subdivide it doesn't mean that there are buyers out there ready to buy the subdivided land from you.

In summary, this book provides a good basic overview, but that's all. I wouldn't go out and purchase land solely based on what's stated in this book.

Great for the Beginner.......2002-04-24

I was thrilled with the book. I am new to the land business and felt that it gave me a great look into the life of someone who has been there. The book was very interesting and easy to understand. It wasn't filled with double talk like some books are. I read it from cover to cover in one sitting. I was told I couldn't put it down and he was right. Thanks for giving me a new look at my future and a light at the end of the tunnel. I reccommend it to everyone.

There's No Business Like Land Business.......2002-03-03

The title should reflect that this book is a "novice" or "layman" view of what the business is about. I work daily within the land development realm. This book paints the subject as being quite simplistic, leaving the reader feeling the buzz normally felt at a Multi-level Networking Seminar. If it was this easy, everyone would do it.

Though the author writes in a very readable style, the content leaves much to be desired. The author paints too broad a picture when describing the process. In doing so, it is impossible for the reader to learn any true specifics that would actually be used to make a deal. As a developer myself, I like to see more substance when any discussion of real estate takes place. This book reads more like a "get rich quick scheme" than a "how to" book.

Great book for the novice and professional alike. I found the book to answer most questions concerning everything from buying to selling techniques... I would have like more indepth coverage on land selection but understand every community is different. If you are interested in real estate this is a must for your collection!
