Great photos from a master.......2007-07-26

Charlie Waite's black and white photographs are every bit as good as his colour work. I particularly appreciate his infrared work shown in this book. Although I am a digital photographer now and this book features only film based pictures, it is very educational just to look and absorb Charlie Waite's images. Well worth the price. Highly recommended (by me!)

Design Is Not A Subject.......2004-03-18

In the nicest possible way, it is difficult to argue with successful published photographers who lead classes to exotic destinations, but let me try. Into every camera, besides film or flash card, is loaded the aesthetics of the medium. Each release of the shutter a photographer tests their knowledge of it and against what they see "In Their Minds Eye." The first part of seeing with "The Mind's Eye" is choosing a subject to photograph and then coaxing design to help organize the image. Mr. Waite's travel snapshots of the world fall below this threshold. The SUBJECT takes a back seat to DESIGN. A few of the images, like the terra cotta face with water pipe at the mouth, page 101, is not worth film, paper or ink. Many of Mr. Waite's images are bad forgeries of SUBJECTS other photographers' have done with greater care and ability. Mr. Waite's travels took him to America and his subject was the jaws of an earth mover and rock. If he could have spent a few of his travel days moving through the "Grand Circle" in the Southwestern Landscape of America, he would not of included so many cliché photographs of Tuscany. When I buy a book, what I am thinking about is to revisit it, and feel the same way about the photographer's efforts as when I purchased it. For Mr. Waite's book "In My Mind's Eye, Seeing In Black & White", this purchase was returned for the lack of the latter. Craig Carlson, Chula Vista, California, carlson1@mail.sdsu.edu.

I knew the author as a younger man ...has morphed into an amalgam of Dr. Ruth and Dr. Phil. Death of a close relative effects people in profound ways, yet personalities are mostly immutable. Ann Arbor is a granola city, but please. I found the prose stilted and the examples right in line with the general tendency of people in the helping professions to generalize their advice to the masses to sell books. Waste of time!!!

Not just a self help book........2000-08-29

This book is thoughtful, gentle, deeply reflective and wonderfully written. It brings a literate touch to the self-help genre.

Saferstein walks you through some important events in his life in order to derive general lessons that will be helpful for anyone who has suffered a loss, or is going through a change of life, or working their way through a relationship. It is his first book and is a very worthy effort. I look forward to reading more from this promising new writer who moves the self-help genre to a higher plane. Highly recommended.

Love Lor The Living by Dan Saferstein Phd.......2000-08-22

I was touched by the sensitivity, wisdom and honesty of the writer. While written in an easy readable style, it's a book that goes to the core of human needs and feelings:love,pain, understanding,belonging and other. I appreciated Dr. Saferstein's approach to relationships often from the woman's point of view.At times it seemed that it was a woman's voice speaking to me. Reading about the writer's personal life, I found many subtle lessons to apply to my own life. I found it uplifting that grief at the death of his younger sister resulted in a new reawakaning to all the things that were dear to him. It made me reflect on my relationships and what was important to me in life.

Real Protrait of a Real Woman.......2003-08-06

As a nurse I have heard and read about Clara Barton for years. This book finally reinvents the tired images - melodramatic icon of female self sacrifice and courage, angel on earth and of the battlefield - and offers the reader a compelling, warm and very real picture of the person and personality of this famous individual. We see all aspects of Clara's character and the impact of the many choices she makes. We even get to see a few of the skeletons in her closet. Without this book, I doubt we would know that there were any! The amount of detail - and it is considerable - is so beautifully woven into the historical narrative that the story, like the Civil War, sweeps the reader from one new experience to the next. Read this and you will feel the jolting of army wagons along rutted roads, struggle to rest as the canvas flaps of your tent crack and strain in storms, gallop with joyful abandon along the beaches at Hilton Head - and much more. I purchased my copy at Gettyburg and it is the best "souvenir" purchase I ever made. Bravo to Stephen Oates!

Educational and Entertaining to read. A must have book!.......1997-04-07

Mr. Oates has done it again. You will know Clara Barton ambitions, downfalls, her emotions as well as her eager drive and personal duty to serve those who suffered so much during the Civil War years. The contents of this book will jump out at you and you'll feel that you're right next to the personalities involved. Oh, what women had to go through to pursue a dream or an ambition to contribute to society. Clara has a heart of gold as her patients in and off the field well knew, yet she was being torn apart on the inside by the constant fear that she wasn't doing enough for "her boys". Her personal life was put on the back shelf as she persued her one desire, to help those who were less fortunate. You'll follow Clara as she goes through the blood, sweat, tears, agony and the horrors of the war. This is a true story of a dark chapter in our american history when brother fought against brother literally. It is also of a dream turned into reality that Clara Barton followed with a sincere robust ambition to pursue the betterment of her fellow man. By caring for the soldiers on the battlefield, she proved to the Union Army that those suffering needed love, compassion and of course medical care where it was most needed - on the front lines of battle. This is a must read book for those interested in hero's, Civil War history or nursing history. Stephen B. A couple of years ago, I decided it was time to move out of my parents house. Because I didn't plan on having a family of my own for some time, I decided that a condominium was the best choice for me. After about 5 months of searching and not coming up with everything I wanted for the price I was willing to pay, a friend gave me this book. After reading it, I knew what questions to ask to who(and what answers I needed to hear),how to research the people and situations I was dealing with, what to watch out for, and how to really find my dream condo. It made me realize that I wasn't only getting my own place, I was investing in my future! It took me almost a year, but I finally found what I was looking for AND paid MY price. The best part was that it was easy to read and understand,got to the point, and stayed interesting from the first page until the last.
