        Book Description

Learn How To Apply The Theory Of Constraints To Management Accounting.

The Theory of Constraints, a management philosophy derived from physics, assumes that constraints prevent organizations from achieving better performance. The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is based on a scientific method that has been developed and refined for nearly three decades by Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt. As a tool for business management, TOC is now accepted as a mainstream alternative to cost accounting.

        Throughput Accounting

Reveals a new management tool for managerial accounting and shows an alternative path for other management practices.

Enables managers to quickly see if their decisions increase profitability.

Demonstrates some of cost accounting's flaws, and shows how these errors will lead to bad decision making.

Compares the paradigm of TOC-based throughput accounting with more conventional cost accounting methodologies and in the process, demonstrates a new way to solve the complex problems of modern management.

4 out of 5 stars Good if you're familiar with TOC.......2004-02-24

This is a good explaination of why the various allocation based account methods lead to poor management decisions and a good introduction to a better way of accounting. It does not include how to reconcile throughput accounting with required GAAP reporting. The only book I know that does is The Measurement Nightmare, which is a rather difficult read. It would be very helpful to have a book with example problems to work, an explaination of the GAAP reconciliation process, and more detail into what costs are totally variable and non-totally variable.

4 out of 5 stars Stop waisting time and start making money!.......2003-07-31

This is a funny little book. It's not too well written and the content is not that new, once you have read Eli Goldratt's basics on the topic.
However, Thomas Corbett simply put the stuff together and proves, beyond any doubt, the fallacy of classical cost accounting as well as the "new & improved" fallacy of ABC.
Examples are quite simple to follow and the outcome is very exiting!
Makes you seriously wonder if there is add-on software out there that extracts the relevant data from present accounting systems, and helps top and middle management make the right decdions for a change on a daily basis. Key question is; how can this software help non-TOC companies help establish their bottle neck?

        5 out of 5 stars Helpful book.......2003-02-19

People who did not understand the message, find the Throughput Accounting a useless framework. But if you are a smart and open mind person, this book is for you.

The theory is very well explained illustrating an alternative path to the old and nosense cost accounting.

I advice you to buy it.

        1 out of 5 stars Useless book.......2003-01-19

I really think I have lost money buying this useless book I advice you not to buy it.
The nosense theory explained is even explained bad.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a TOC book that addresses accounting specifics!.......2002-05-22

We've all read Goldratt's work on the Theory of Constraints (TOC) and the improvements that can be made in manufacturing processes. However, what is often overlooked in those books is the reality of getting these changes to work with our traditional cost accounting systems. TOC sounds great in theory, but how do we, as accountants, measure and report financial results in a way which supports TOC, yet still fulfills our responsibilities for external reporting? Don't we still have to apply overhead to products and calculate product costs?

In this book, Corbett does a great job illustrating how our old cost accounting techniques are inadequate, and, more importantly, can lead us to make decisions which actually harm the bottom line. But he doesn't stop at simply pointing out the shortcomings of cost accounting, as most texts do. He takes the additional step of providing real financial statements and measures that support the concepts in TOC, and allow accountants to give production management the data they need. You can begin using these statements right away in your own company. In addition, he shows us how to use TOC to make various financial decisions. He even spends a chapter showing some of the criticisms of Throughput Accounting and provide warnings about its proper use.

After reading this book you will realize that calculating a product cost is like buying a house and then trying to figure out how much of the purchase price to assign to the bathroom faucet. "Product Cost" is a fallacy, and impossible to determine. All that really matters is Throughput, the difference between selling price and totally variable costs.

If you are a controller or cost accountant stuck between production managers who are eager to implement TOC improvements, and financial managers who still insist on overhead application and product costs, this is the book for you.

A student guide for Overview of the Theory of Constraints for Industry. Workbook explains what TOC is starting with the analogy of a process as "a black box", where things go in (i.e. material and money) and things come out (aka finished goods out). It then expands upon this system in how it can me measured using Throughput Accounting principles of Throughput, Inventory, and Operating Expenses (T,I, OE). It then explores the application of TOC in developing the TOC soluction for production using the "5 Focusing Steps". In summary,is a set of logical tools known as the Thinking Processes and their applications. In industry the applications cover finance, production, engineering, distribution, marketing, sales, setting the strategic direction of the company, and, no less important, management skills.

Each year thousands of biomedical and behavioral researchers submit grant applications to the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) for support of their research or research training activities. The majority of these applications are submitted to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). By describing the inner workings of the NIH extramural programs and providing practical information about grant programs and processes, this authoritative work is designed to help investigators gain a more favorable edge in obtaining support for their research proposals. It offers practical insights into a broad spectrum of the basic and clinical research interests of the 21 NIH research granting components, and identifies the various mechanisms of support. Descriptions, guidance, and advice are also provided on specific areas such as how to prepare a grant application; the peer review system, the procedures leading to award decisions, the responsibilities of the NIH staff in managing the review and referral of applications, and managing grant programs. Other extramural policies and procedures are covered such as the appeals system, animal welfare, the privacy act, and research involving human subjects. Legislation, funding, and the NIH budget are also discussed. Written by two former senior-level managers at the National Institutes of Health and current consultants to several USPHS agencies, A Guide to NIH Grant Programs is a valuable reference source for members of the biomedical and behavioral research community.

2 out of 5 stars I just saved you $ and time !.......2004-09-04

I just saved you the price of this book and the time it takes to read it...so please send me a scholarship! Seriously this book is not good for the average individual looking for a scholarship. I read the entire book, carefully taking notes on possiblities, checked them out online and did not find even one scholarship that was a good match for my high achieving, caucasion, college freshman daughter. Not one.
The majority of scholarships in this book are geared to high school seniors and they are obscure.
Are you very fat and live in New England then yes there is a scholarship here for you by the New England Fat Acceptance Association. Are you a licensed pilot who is a member of the 99's..ok this book works for you too. Are you planning to study outdoor recreation AND you are a Canadian citizen AND you are a second year student AND you have financial need AND it is preferable that you have a background in canoeing? I bite my tongue..there is a scholarship in here for you too.
And please buy this book if you live in the general area of Tyson City, Tennessee are a US citizen and have a Tyson facility near you along with demonstrated financial need and proof that you held at least a part-time job in the summer.
And you may also want to buy the book if are a member of The Catholic Library Association.
BUT for the majority of wanna-scholarship students you are better off doing a websearch on a good scholarship site and inputting your background. Reading this book is a laborious way to discover that you need more generalized scholarship offerings.
Other details...book opens with "A Potpourri of Scholarships" and lists the top international scholarships for non-US students, top women scholarships, celebrity scholarships etc. Again..they may be top but they are very very specific. Next are pages and pages of scholarships sorted by categories. Then a list of career information sources, followed by an index.
Save your dollars and search online and at your guidance office.

                    1 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR $.......2003-06-29

This book was simply a waste of money-awful. The requirements to qualify for the scholarships is too incredibly specific. It is also the worst organized book i have ever read. It took so long to comb through the whole book only to find nothing. Please, I beg of you to buy a diffrent book. Don't waste your money.

                    2 out of 5 stars Too specific.......2002-12-26

I'm a junior and didn't really find this book of much use. There aren't a lot of general scholarships. There's a lot of scholarships relating to specific schools or organizations. There weren't a lot of scholarships for essays, for juniors, or just an average person.

3 out of 5 stars Slightly long-winded bio stretching entire life..........2004-06-21

I'm sorry, but this book just was not what I expected it to be. Though Harry Dunai did experience the Holocaust as a Jew, his deafness barely entered into it, except to maybe save his life. His typical experience of being sent away to residential schooling in Budapest probably saved his life, since his parents and brothers were collected and sent to the gas chambers.

Dunai's life was not easy by any measure, but he had many protectors and many people who cared for him and did so much for him in the way of providing homes and jobs. I don't know if it is the translating of Dunai's own words through his daughter and ghostwriter, but Dunai comes across as a very self-centered human being, who often does not show either the gratefulness for his blessings and for those who do things for him, nor does he express much concern for others.

Since I've read so many histories and biographies about those who did care on all sides, this one was very disappointing. The section on the war is short...mainly about how hungry he was. A lot of people starved to death...a lot of other people never had the people caring for them nor the opportunities for escaping a horrific existence that Dunai had.

If you are looking for a good book on the Medical Holocaust as it affected the Deaf, read 'Crying Hands' about the Deaf in Germany who were targeted before and during WWII. This book is okay as a demonstration of deaf life during the war and afterwards in Europe, I guess. (...)
