Book Description
It is not hard to recognize some of the most common symptoms of financial dysfunction. Sometimes the symptoms are easy to identify, and sometimes you need to look deeper. Unlike in medicine, when a financially dysfunctional person learns to treat the symptoms, more often than not, the dysfunction will eventually go away.
Here are seven symptoms I see most often in my planning sessions:
1. Mortgage Aversion
2. Inappropriate Risk Reactions
3. Compulsive Spending or Excessive Debt
4. Poverty Mentality
5. Miser Mentality
6. Acute Financial Paranoia
7. Windfall Woes

Building Your Financial Pyramid.......2006-07-11
Bert shows the reader all of the building blocks for a financial pyramid, and it is a clear guide for where to direct your money. After I came to understand it I bought 3 more copies for my sons so they could build their own pyramids. The pyramid shows me the areas that are covered well and the areas that I need to work to achieve my financial goals. Superb roadmap!

We reached the battalion about midnight, and found it in extended order, waiting to carry on with the advance. There was a good deal of rifle and machine-gun fire going on, and it was very difficult to get one's bearings. The line was stretched across the middle of a great saddle of rock, covered with scrub and huge boulders, and bounded on both sides by a deep ravine, falling away almost perpendicularly for fifteen hundred feet. This, of course, I did not know at the time, but found it out on our way back later.

Customer Reviews:
the book missed one big point.......2007-04-11
I just received this today and skimmed over the pages. There is close to nothing about why the British flew these Jews from Palestine into Europe. There is a vauge reference to intelligence work, but even the young girls' book on Hannah Senesh put out by Scholastic Books states on the back cover that she was sent by the British to set up an escape network for Allied airmen shot down in the region. The group was also sent to help repatriate Russian soldiers from the nearby (to Roumania) Soviet border. The VHS movie "Hannah's War" from the 1980s makes that also very clear and plain.
I felt I was reading a good general history of WW II, with Jewish partisan movement included and major battles, but not a book about why Hannah Senesh voluteered to go to Europe on a dangerous mission, other than to see her mother. As if this was "tourist season" in WW II.
The need for Hannah's mission (it included 30 men and another woman) stems originally from the Allies repeated air attacks on the Ploesti oilfields in Roumania which supplied the Germans 60% of their oil. The first attack in 1943 lead to 200 shot down Allied fliers captured. This lead to two other major attacks on the oilfields because the were put back in production quickly. Flack damaged airplanes can go hundreds of miles before a need for the crew to parachute out. The border distances between Roumania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia (the return route to an Allied airbase in Italy) are small, even for a World War II bomber. In fact, Hannah's group did rescue some Allied airmen. And there was a major secondary reason the British knew about but would not endorse: setting up escape networks for fleeing Jewish refugees AFTER WW II to get to Palestine (Israel) by outfoxing the British blockade, a blockade in effect even before WW II.
But reading this book, I got the impression that the author Linda Atkinson all but thought the British were running a travel agency or a "Make a Wish" Foundation to reunite Hannah with her mother. Despite the worthy inclusion of many biographical concerns of a Hannah as a young woman, including boyfriends, decisions about what she wanted to do with her life, her self-doubts and strengths, I found the extremely limited discussion of why Hannah was sent to Europe an insult to the military mission, the British and the Israelis who risked their lives to fly all 32 native European speakers in to set up escape networks. I thought, in the sections regarding Hannah, that I was reading "Hannah's (Not So) Excellent Adventure." I would recommend the Scholastic book over this for teenage girls.
In Kindling Flame, she sparked a fire.......2006-05-16
When I read this book, I had no idea what to expect. The assidnment was to read a book from the WWII/Holocaust period. There were shelves full, but this one caught my attention. I took it home and started to read, but was so sucked in I didn't want to stop! Hannah Senesh had such a wonderful story, and I could easily compare her to Anne Frank. She had such a wonderful personality; she was poetic, determined, and courageous. Unlike Anne, Hannah didn't go into hiding. She escaped to Palestine and trained for a parachuting mission back to her homeland of Hungary. She was captured and beaten, and eventually killed, but remained a beacon to her fellow women in jail, making dolls for children and teaching Hebrew to the adults. Hannah was such an inspiration, I think everyone should read her story.
An excellent story of a girl fighing for her rights.......1999-07-01
When I first read this book, I had just finished touring the Holocaust Museum in Wash. D.C and I picked this out at the bookstore. I am amazed by this book. The reader immediatly falls in love with Hannah, for her strength and courage. The reader finds themselves reading on wanting to know if she succeeds the Nazis or not. If you enjoy reading about the Holocaust, you will love this book! Thank You for reading my review.
The most inspiring book I have ever read........1999-06-05
I read this book in the 6th grade and it was very heavy, but it is my favorite book. I did a project on Hanna Senesh and I learned so much about the Holocaust. I would recomend this book to anyone who needs to be inspired. Hanna Senesh was a brave young lady.
Excellent, inspirational reading!.......1998-12-28
This biography for young adults uses the diary, letters, poetry, interviews with her mother and brother, and official documents to tell the story of Hannah Senesh. Atkinson begins Hannah's story by describing her happy life before anti-Semitism took hold in Hungary. She uses Hannah's own words to describe her need to make something of her life. Hannah's decision to immigrate to Palestine shows that she clearly appreciated the potential for danger in remaining in Hungary too long. The reader quickly comes to admire Hannah, for she is described as a flesh-and-blood creature. She is forceful, determined, and youthful, but not without self-doubt. It is her self-doubt that makes her want to "do something" by returning to Hungary from the relative security of Palestine to help Jews escape to freedom. Although Hannah's mission was not successful, her willingness to act decisively makes her a symbol of her adopted homeland. By reading the story of Hannah Senesh, young readers will gain a clearer understanding into the national character of Israel.

Very imaginative.......2006-05-21
Only reason he did not get 5 stars...every once in a while character names would be switched in mid-scene, jarring you out of what is going on while you try to figure out who is actually present. Otherwise, an engrossing book with and unusual take on alternate history.
The modern names just add a little in joke to what is going on.
know what to expect.......2006-04-10
The reviewer, Mr. Weaver, is right on the money.
The review by AHR is unnecessarily negative.
It appears AHR simply expected one thing and got another and this caused frustration.
AHR is correct in that the setting is sort of a mish-mash of technology and pop-culture references.
But as Weaver points out, this is not a bad thing.
I found it charming, interesting and original.
I didn't think it was done too over the top, and I don't think it detracted from the main story about the protagonists.
There are MANY books and gaming genres that are a similar mish-mash and they've done well. And in the end, we have to remember this IS science-FICTION and the author has the freedom to use whatever elements he chooses to get the story across.
All of that said, I did find a problem with the way the author's own verbose speaking style bled over unrealistically into some of the characters. For example, Bonnie - essentially a teenage farmgirl - suddenly rips off monologues that are lengthy, detailed, articulate, complex, and full of lexicon that no farm-girl would have. This happened with other characters as well when the narrative descriptions would sound VERY much like the dialogue of other characters. It just made it sound more like the author himself was speaking THROUGH the characters instead of observing the characters and letting them speak for themselves.
A nice beginning..........2006-04-07
...to what seems to be another multi-part series. Now usually, I avoid series like the plague until they're finished (who wants to wait four years between books?), but this one snared my interest.
Now, while I agree with the reviewer below and his critique of Harriet Klausner (speed-reading is not a virtue, my dear), Kindling is by no means an awful book. In fact, it's quite good.
The plot (at least in this first book) is fairly standard: brave young heroes must Band Together To Fight Evil. But what makes this book sing is the setting and the character development.
The descriptions of this alternate fantasy Earth, where evil sorcery rests uneasily side-by-side with early 20th-century technology, are outstanding. Farren's imagery is great, and his prose is lyrical. Sure, Kindling is by no means 'realistic' alternate history, but I don't believe that was Farren's intention in the first place, as should be evident by his sly references to 'that family of moonshiners and horse theives, the Bush family'. It is first and foremost a fun story.
The characters are very accessible and well-realized, I thought. We are not hit over the head with endless pages of needless backstory; instead, Farren jumps right into the story, only working in backstory where appropriate. Instead, he dwells more on how the characters are reacting to current events. Their motivations and actions are clear and understandable; their thoughts and hopes are realistic and elicit sympathy.
I knocked half a star off my review simply because I now have to wait some indeterminate period of time before the sequel comes out. :( The other half a star was deducted because of the font size - I don't know what was going through the minds of the folks at Tor, but a 400+ page book should never be typeset in 8-point letters. Very hard on the eyes.
Don't let the negative reviews fool you - this is a very good book.
Really Poor.......2005-08-01
The guy below me pretty much said what I was about to say. Well, anyway, this book sucks. Avoid at all costs.
A miserable mish-mash.......2005-03-02
The only other review posted, by "Harriet Klausner", is evidently by someone who read the jacket notes or the Booklist comments but plainly did not actually read the book.
"Kindling" is a miserable mish-mash, and the person who recommended it to me is going to have to pay. He said it was an alternate history, but it's the worst kind. Farren threw a bunch of stuff in a blender, hit puree, and this mush with mystery nuggets is what came out. It's set in a world where there apparently is no Christianity or Jewry, but people instead either worship the "goddess" or some evil gods, Aksur and Ignir (apparently lifted from Zoroastrianism?) and Zhaithan. But despite all that, it's somehow set in a world where North America has a Virginia, a Richmond, an Albany, etc. Oh, and a prime minister named Jack Kennedy. How clever! Not. Farren at least avoids trying to explain how such a ludicrous history happened.
The characters are not particularly well drawn, and some of the so-called heroes are not people I would care to meet or associate with. The "Lady" from Albany worries on one page she might be raped, but a couple pages later she is willingly having sex with one of the "evil" Mosul officers. The sex slave Jesamine is a least honest about what she is. The two male protagonists are just sort of there: the kid from Virginia is an unformed kid. The soldier from Hispania might have been interesting if given more play but he seems to get the fewest pages.
And the bad guys being "fully developed antagonists"? Hardly. It's 2/3 of the way into the book before any one of them gets more than a page or two of time, and the sister and brother evil mages of Zhaitan turn out to be cardboard baddies that could have been lifted from any fantasy with requisite bad dialog.
And the plot, well, who knows. Not much happens until past halfway, then it ramps up to a quick climax. And then whimpers out to a final paragraph which says "TO BE CONTINUED".
Bleah. I'm amazed this book was published by Tor. Their editors are better than this.

Gloom and Doom.......2002-08-26
Although much of the information is now out of date, (published in 1995) the author is trying to emphasize the sad state of retirement planning among baby boomers.
-Your 401(k) and stocks are going to be in the dumper
-You will get little to no Social Security
-You will likely not have nearly enough pension money
-You'll probably have to work well past your anticipated "retirement age"
I believe that there will be ups and downs, but to preach this gloom and doom makes for very depressing reading. Those that have not been saving already know they're in for some hard times. Heck, if I were one who hadn't been saving for decades, I'd consider committing hara-kiri with a plastic butter knife after reading this.
A realistic wake-up call to the "Boomer" generation!.......1999-08-14
As a Financial & Retirement Planner for over 15 years, I can attest that Mr Karpel's book is a very realistic portrayal of financial things to come. This book should be required reading for both the "baby boomer" and "X'er" generations!

Book Description
First published in 1863, this book has the immediacy, passion, and intimacy of its wartime context. It tells the remarkable story of Albert Webb Bishop, a New York lawyer turned Union soldier, who in 1862 accepted a commission as lieutenant colonel in a regiment of Ozark mountaineers. While maintaining Union control of northwest Arkansas, he collected stories of the social coercion, political secession, and brutal terrorism that scarred the region.
His larger goal, however, was to popularize and inspire sympathy for the South's Unionists and to chronicle the triumph of Unionism in a Confederate state. His account points to the complex and divisive nature of Confederate society and in doing so provides a perspective that has long been absent from discussions of the Civil War.

May have been slightly, very slightly, useful in the 1980's but not now. Written about a limited demographic -- Silver Spring, Maryland -- and not worth wasting your time over.
Trite.......2002-01-10
Nothing anyone with common sense couldn't figure out for himself. Don't waste your money. I knew the author and could fill a book myself with stories of his unprofessionalism. I suspect the good review was by a relative. There are much better books than this one.
Everything You Need to Know to Sell Your Home... Now!.......2001-01-11
Whether you're a first time home seller or a veteran to the residential real estate market, this book is an excellent reference. Full of practical, common sense advice, Gregory Lerch writes in a clearly professional, yet friendly and approachable style. His personal anecdotes and timeless tips cover all of the bases from marketing to accepting a contract for sale. It's all here, including an extensive section of samples of contracts, closing and related documents. This comprehensive resource is the only one you'll need.

Book Description
Frequently dismissed as a 'nature poet' and an 'Indian Princess' E. Pauline Johnson (1861-1913) was not only an accomplished thinker and writer but a contentious and passionate personality who 'talked back' to Euro-Canadian culture. "Paddling Her Own Canoe" is the only major scholarly study that examines Johnson's diverse roles as a First Nations champion, New Woman, serious writer and performer, and Canadian nationalist.
A Native advocate of part-Mohawk ancestry, Johnson was also an independent, self-supporting, unmarried woman during the period of first-wave feminism. Her versatile writings range from extraordinarily erotic poetry to polemical statements about the rights of First Nations. Based on thorough research into archival and published sources, this volume probes the meaning of Johnson's energetic career and addresses the complexities of her social, racial, and cultural position. While situating Johnson in the context of turn-of-the-century Canada, the authors also use current feminist and post-colonial perspectives to reframe her contribution. Included is the first full chronology ever compiled of Johnson's writing.
Pauline Johnson was an extraordinary woman who crossed the racial and gendered lines of her time, and thereby confounded Canadian society. This study reclaims both her writings and her larger significance.
Winner of the Raymond Klibansky Prize, awarded by the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences
