1 out of 5 stars Ellie Kay.......2005-07-15

This book did have a few good ideas but the more I read the more I was put off by her constant plugs for her other book and her website, this occurs on nearly EVERY page. There are also several biblical references, which are fine I guess since that is her audience but will put off the non-Christian reader. "More with Less", "Extending the Table", "Tightwad Gazette" are by far better choices. I checked this out at the library and would suggest you do that before purchasing for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-04-22

I stumbled across this one on my library shelf.

I like how the author writes alittle story about what she is talking about before she helps you with ideas on how to save on all different subjects.

She give web addresses for the internet and how to save, and at the end, she has letters from readers and how she has helped them.

Great fast read, with useful information.

Ellen

5 out of 5 stars A Woman You Love to Hate.......2003-04-15

I can see why another woman would love to hate Ellie Kay! She tells a great story, loves her husband and kids and tells us how to save money on top of it all! I'm a guy who found this book to be incredibly full of helpful information and the only reason I can see for a nick picking review is that others may be jealous! I didn't see the God factor in this book, although it's plain her family goes to church. I was also impressed by the debt reduction tips and how to find a good financial counselor. If you want to save money and be entertained at the same time, then ignore the sour grapes and you'll find this book to be sweet pickings!

1 out of 5 stars This book is just plain annoying!.......2003-03-23

I'm sorry but this is just not good! I mean, her money saving tips are creative but honestly , it takes hours to cut enough coupons to save that much money off of a grocery bill -- I don't know what her time is worth an hour but it's more than 10 dollars in my life. I also grew up wearing thrift store clothes (before it was cool) and hearing the kids taunt "your mama shops at K-Mart" -- if only my family had the money to shop at K Mart!

The point is, this woman is rediculous and incorrect in her statements at the least. If you can handle the god references and obsessive coupons and rebates (if you got that kind of time) than this IS the book for you. It's definitely NOT the book for me. I want my 10.50 and the two hours of my life back that this book cost me.

5 out of 5 stars Like discovering a gold mine.......2003-01-31

A whirlwind of great ideas. I love her stories, they made the rest of the book more fun to read. Some books are so idea oriented that they become boring. Ellie Kay is funny! I wish I could sit across the kitchen table from her and get to know her better.

Buy this book! I have save tons of money by following only a few of her ideas. I wish I had this book three years ago before we started having money problems. Because of Ellie we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.

            Book Description

Through portraits of four figures—Charles Willson Peale, Hugh Henry Brackenridge, William Dunlap, and Noah Webster—Joseph Ellis provides a unique perspective on the role of culture in post-Revolutionary America, both its high expectations and its frustrations. Each life is fascinating in its own right, and each is used to brightly illuminate the historical context.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An American Revolution Review.......2002-11-24

Ellis presents the American Revolution in six "bite size" stories. This structure allows the reader to enjoy American History without wadding through hundreds of pages of text. The six short stories presented by Ellis don't make conclusions, but present, in very simple terms, what occurred and presents options as to how the event may be interpreted. A real easy read, especially if you are an American History buff, and a great review on the American Revolution.

My favorite story was where Ellis presents the dinner meeting between Jefferson, Madison and Hamiliton on the subject of the federal assumption of the states' debt. Here, Ellis tells us why the Capitol is in Washington, D.C and not Philidelphia. Without elaboration, it was a deal struck between the two Virginians, Jefferson and Madison, in exchange for assumption of states' debts by the larger federal government. Assumption of state debt assisted the northern colonies (Hamilton was from New York and a great financial mind) who had larger debt; moving the Capitol from the north to the new District of Columbia allowed Virgina to have closer access to the nation's Capitol (travel was difficult in these times and, right after the war, there was concern with having a government so far away) as well as an economic boost. The story is conveyed effortlessly and well and leaves the reader felling as though he or she were sitting like a fly on the wall listening to these intellectual giants discuss this deal.

I would recommend this book strongly and, read together with John Adams by David McCullough, providers a great backround in the American Revolution. If the reader decides to read only one of these, the Founding Fathers is really a short and great priemer on the American Revolution. Thanks go to Ellis for providing such a good read on the American Revolution.

5 out of 5 stars A young boy keeps getting hoodwinked........2006-10-23

A young boy goes out in search for his dad in a department store after getting separated from him.

There are several picture books out there to help instruct your child about safety. That is not the point of this book. The boy thinks he spots his dad hat, shoes, or tie but when you turn the page it turns out to be someone or something else. It's like a lift-the-flap book but it never gets ruined because there are no actual flaps to flip.

                    A storytime favorite. Delightful.

5 out of 5 stars my children love it!!.......2006-06-27

My children loved this book when we borrowed it from the library.
They wanted to read this book for a whole week. They could not get enough of it.
The graphic and the story line kept them interested. They are delighted by
the flip pages and cut outs.

5 out of 5 stars Children LOVE Taro Gomi.......2003-01-05

This book has been critisized for being a cold and uninviting treatment of the subject of a child getting lost. In my experience as a mother and elementary school teacher I have found the exact opposite to be true. Children respond with rapt interest to the colorful illustrations and marvel as the die-cut pages are turned to reveal something unexpected every time. The language is simple and easy to follow, and the story of a young child separated from his parent in the mall is something children can all relate to. Taro Gomi's books are especially popular with young children (1-7yrs) for their simple text and unique illustrations and "I Lost My Dad!" is no exception. I recommend this and all Taro Gomi's books to parents of children who love to read.

                      Book Description

At the height of the Serbian siege of Sarajevo, Ellen Blackman could no longer bear the televised images of wounded children desperate for medical care. So she set off for Bosnia. There she shared the tragedies and occasional triumphs of a brave people whose world was crumbling around them while a seemingly indifferent world stood by. And despite tremendous bureaucratic and dangerous obstacles, she got the children out.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Political indifference & the effects on a new generation.......2001-10-01

Despite editorial reviews rating Ms. Blackman's account of her actions and experiences in Sarejevo to be "unfocused" and Ms. Blackman "her own personal heroine", I found her writing to be clear and concise regarding the "peacekeeping" mission and it's reception from those it was "protecting". Her personal story of the chaos and destruction of the country and it's people was informative and gripping at the same time, bringing home the reality of one woman's determination to do more than watch the horror and politics of war from her television set. Although I read her book in it's pre-edited format, her talent for telling the real story of the victims of war is obvious, and her selfless acts of giving and loving make this a book worth reading for those interested in not only the historical and religious reasons behind the conflict, but for anyone wanting to understand the psychological impact of patriotism and forced allegience on a young and idealistic generation.

                      My Lost World

Set in the early 21st century, this novel chronicles the journey of one survivor across the eastern United States and into the Midwest after a devastating plague nearly eliminates civilization. The book tells of the struggles in his quest to determine who and what else may still exist. The story gathers momentum with each chapter, offering an all too real look at a world struggling to recreate itself amongst chaos and fear, yet with a glimmer of hope and humanity. It is a novel of science fiction suspense and realism. The author's gift for intrigue and storytelling will leave the reader begging for the next installment in the series. Two thumbs up!!

I found this book to be an exciting adventure. Fast and easy reading with unexpected events. This is a heart-tugging story of a kind and loving man who is struggling to find his place in a new world. Bravo!!

5 out of 5 stars it could happen.......2002-11-03

This book is about a doctor who suddenly finds himself in a world deccimated by a strange virus. At first I was repelled by the horror of such a thing happening but then I got into the character of the hero. I was touched by his finding of his family all killed by the virus. Then I became facinated because he contacts people caught in outer space and they plan to meet in Prairie Village, a town close to where I live. The story tells a griping tale of his travel to get to Prairie Village and of the people he meets along the way. All of them have also somehow survived this plague. And I couldn't help but think this all could happen in this time.

The book has very strong characters, deals with present day fears and will make you wonder if you could survive in the same circumstances. I will guarantee that you will not be able to put it down. I have passed it on to several friends and they agreed with me. Buy this book and you will have a fascinating evening that will take you into the wee hours of the morning!!

There are advantages of being a fulltime pastor for forty-three years. Then there are the disadvantages. I try as best I can not to dwell on the disadvantages. But the one that did bother me the most, was not being able to answer the questions of children. Adults seldom ask really hard to answer questions, like, What is Gods favorite color? or Are their toys in heaven? or Why is everything that is fun to do a sin? I remember this one well, Why did God choose the Jews instead of us? Forty-three years I have been talking about God, only to learn that I knew very little about Him. This book is The Spirit at work. A Minister who has not read this book is unlearned regardless of their education.

4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking - and then some!.......2000-01-25

I liked a lot of things about this book. It's a short read in that it's a series of statements by folks with 'answers' from God in bold below them. Each statement/answer then is a stand-alone thought that can be read and appreciated for itself. I think that God watches Judge Judy on occasion. One person says, "God, I feel like believing in you is a complete waste of my time." God answers, "I know the feeling." Another statement hit home strongly with me. A man tells God that keeping his pickup truck from starting won't stop him from going out & getting drunk that night. God tells him the truck will start after he's gone back inside to say goodbye to his mother who won't be there when he gets back from the tavern. His Mom dies in his arms, in the house, 2 hours later and the man has not had a drink since.

Unfortunately, for me personally, there are several examples of answers from 'God' that perpetuate the 'fire and brimstone,' "You're going to burn in Hell forever" God that turned me off to Him years ago. Fundamentalist Christians will love them but I tend to take that kind of statement with a grain of salt and look for the loving message that I know underlies it if it's really from God. I highly recommend this book as something to have handy for a quick pick-me-up since you can open it almost anywhere and find a useful inspiration of some kind. Even the ones I disagree with make me think and that's not all bad. It was worth the price to me.

5 out of 5 stars The concept of God, seemed a little far fetched........2000-01-24

A friend knowing my feelings about God, sent me this book. Be it a real or an imaginary God in this book, it is a God I can believe in. It feels good not hating television evangelist. It was the first time anyone had laid it out so clearly.

5 out of 5 stars My Review of "Give My Heart Ease" by Jack Schroder.......2005-06-14

"Give My Heart Ease", a novel , by Jack Schroder is the second book I have read that was written by this author. Jack Schroder has written several books and I am confident I will read more of his books because, in my opinion, he is an outstanding writer.

"Give My Heart Ease" is a book about a young girl that gets into prostitution at an early age. It takes place in Oakland, California during the WWII era . The book contains some strong language and sexual content due to the nature of the story of Betty who is a young girl who became a prostitute and tells of her experiences in this profession. I feel that it is not over done as this is an amazing, well written story. There is a lot of suspense in this book and it is difficult to not go to the end of the book to see how it will end.

This book is interesting reading from the first page to the last. This book answered questions I have had for many years about prostitution. I could never understand why or how young women could get into prostitution. After reading this book I can now see some of the why and how's. Betty is the main character in this book and you will enjoy reading her story.

I would recommend this book to anyone college age and older. In fact this book would be an excellent choice for a required reading book in college social science classes such as social work or criminal justice.

Young Laurence didn't really where he fit in. He thought of himself as American, especially since he didn't speak Chinese and couldn't understand his grandmother, who lived in Chinatown. But others saw him as different in the conformist American of the 1950s. In this engaging memoir, the two-time Newbery Honor author tells how writing helped him start to solve the puzzle.

I had to read this book for Language Arts. I didn't like it at all. It's good read, don't get me wrong, but unfortunently it just doesn't have that...um...spark that I'm looking for. It's a good book for a memior, but I wouldn't suggest it. In short, you shouldn't read this book.
