Book Description
Hero, adulterer, bon vivant, murderer and rogue, Dan Sickles led the kind of existence that was indeed stranger than fiction. Throughout his life he exhibited the kind of exuberant charm and lack of scruple that wins friends, seduces women, and gets people killed. In
American Scoundrel Thomas Keneally, the acclaimed author of
Schindler’s List, creates a biography that is as lively and engrossing as its subject.
Dan Sickles was a member of Congress, led a controversial charge at Gettysburg, and had an affair with the deposed Queen of Spain—among many other women. But the most startling of his many exploits was his murder of Philip Barton Key (son of Francis Scott Key), the lover of his long-suffering and neglected wife, Teresa. The affair, the crime, and the trial contained all the ingredients of melodrama needed to ensure that it was the scandal of the age. At the trial’s end, Sickles was acquitted and hardly chastened. His life, in which outrage and accomplishment had equal force, is a compelling American tale, told with the skill of a master narrative.

Download Description
On the last Sunday of February 1859, Dan Sickles, a charming young congressman from New York, murdered his good friend Philip Barton Key (son of Francis Scott Key) -- who was also his wife's lover -- in Washington's Lafayette Square. The shooting took place directly across the street from the White House, the home of Sickles's friend and protector, President James Buchanan.
Sickles turned himself in; political friends in New York's Tammany Hall machinery, including the dynamic criminal lawyer James Brady, quickly gathered around. While his beautiful young wife was banned from public life and shunned by society, Dan Sickles was acquitted.
American Scoundrel is the extraordinary story of this powerful mid-nineteenth century politician and inveterate womanizer, whose irresistible charms and rock-solid connections not only allowed him to get away with murder -- literally -- but also paved the way to a stunning career.
Once free to resume his life, Dan Sickles raised a regiment for the Union political elite and went on to become a general in the army, rising to the rank of brigadier general and commanding a flank at the Battle of Gettysburg in a maneuver so controversial it is still argued over by scholars today. After losing a leg in that battle, Sickles fought on and after the war became military governor of South Carolina, and later was named minister to Spain, where he continued astonishingly to conduct his amorous assignations.
With great brio and insight -- and a delight in bad behavior -- Thomas Keneally has brought to light a tale of American history that resonates with uncomfortable truths about our politics, ethics, and morality.
"Spellbinding.... Riveting.... Mesmerizing."
THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
"Brilliant.... Rollicking, captivating.... Engrossing, entertaining.... Keneally brings Sickles back to life in every colorful and scandalous detail."
CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
"Panoramic.... For anybody who savors ripely old-fashioned storytelling with a side of modern hindsight."
SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
"Lively and evocative.... Keneally's prose, as usual, is vivid and his research is thorough; he displays an impressive command of the minutiae of 19th-century American politics."
THE WASHINGTON POST
"Entertaining.... Fast-paced."
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
"An especially lively and compelling account of an extraordinary life."
THE SEATTLE TIMES
"Provocative.... [Keneally] shows himself... adept at biography.... [He] breathes full and controversial life into a famous military engagement."
THE ECONOMIST
"Engaging.... Keneally deftly conveys the atmosphere of fervent in pre-civil war Washington.... [He] has the advantage of a novelist's sense of pace, a mellifluous prose style and a profound sympathy for both his main characters."
SUNDAY TIMES (LONDON)
"A fascinating look at a time when powerful men could get away with virtually anything."
HOUSTON CHRONICLE
"A memorable account of Sickles' life, and the political, social and military world in which he lived. Keneally has given us an engaging biography."

Unbridled self-interest as a way of life........2005-03-20
Dan Sickles was a brilliant manipulator who managed to get his own way whenever it counted, pulling strings, bending the truth, ignoring the facts, and turning on his charm, full-force. Not content just to win, Sickles wanted also to convince those who opposed him that they were wrong, and to destroy whatever and whoever got in his way. Manipulating public opinion and the opinion of his superiors, including Presidents, he kept himself constantly in the limelight, and even when he went on trial for a cold-blooded murder, he managed to come out a popular winner, the first defendant ever to use temporary insanity as a defense.
Described as charming, bright, gregarious, eloquent, profligate with money (sometimes other people's), and sexually voracious, he also had a streak of cold-blooded cruelty, as his poor young wife discovered, when, after his countless infidelities, she sought solace with Barton Key, only to have Key waylaid by a Sickles friend and shot multiple times, point-blank, by Sickles. A Tammany Hall insider and New York politician, Sickles thrived on the excitement and debate in Washington in the years immediately before the outbreak of the Civil War. Here Keneally does a remarkable job of presenting complex issues clearly, and of personalizing the trauma of war and its emotional devastation.
Though some Civil War buffs have questioned a few details in Keneally's descriptions of battles in which Gen. Sickles participated, these scenes are not the major part of this book. His maltreatment of his wife, from her marriage at 16 until her death from tuberculosis at age 31, is also a focus, as are the murder of Key, Sickles's trial, and, after the war, his continuing involvement with Presidents and his missions to Panama, Colombia, and Spain. Sickles is an unlikable character, presented with all his flaws, and Keneally vividly illustrates this man's successes and their costs to others. Mary Whipple

A Must Have for the Grant Seeker.......2005-09-17
This large book, now in its eighth edition is a compiled list of grant awarding institutions that have a proven interest in making grants for libraries and information services. It includes some 1,600 granting organizations selected because libraries and information services are specifically stated as a type of organization they support, or because they have given out actual grants of $10,000 or more.
The granting organizations are broken down by state, and within states by name. Information supplied about each organization includes how much money they have, how much they give out, their stated purpose, fields of interest, types of support and any limitations (some organizations limit their giving to local areas, such as Boston).
There are quite a number of books written on how to apply for a grant, what should be included in your application, and so on. But after you get the application written, what do you do with it. To whom do you send it. This book is put together by The Foundation Center, a non-profit organization that was set up to assist other non-profits in their grant writing process. Their overall database includes over 78,000 grantmaking foundations.
This book has only those organizations making grants to libraries and information services extracted from that database. This obviously saves your time, and of course your money. At the $125 price, smaller organizations may be unwilling or even unable to spend that much for such a book. The price however, seems fair. This book is not going to sell in the quantities you would expect of a Harry Potter novel, and The Foundation Center has to recoup their costs.
What you are buying for the $125 is time (it would take you a very long time to find these organizations) and completeness (you would never find all of these organizations). The cost should be recovered in the first grant received from a source you never contacted before.
This book has information that you basically cannot do without if you are seeking grants.

Book Description
Franz Joseph Haydn's importance in the history of music is so great, that it would be difficult to summarize his achievements in a few paragraphs. He inherited the sonata form from Bach and made it into a great form of musical expression. He established the symphony, preparing the way for Mozart and Beethoven. He is often called the father of the string quartet. In fact, Mozart commented that it was from Haydn that he learned how to compose for four stringed instruments.
Haydn possessed a sunny disposition and a lovable nature. He was extremely generous and had a warm heart. He is quoted as saying, "Anybody can see by the look of me that I am a good-natured sort of fellow." Much of his good nature can be heard in his music which lives on nearly 200 years after is death in 1809.
This is the story of Franz Joseph Haydn, who was born in Rohrau, Austria to peasant folk. Though the feudalistic times in which he lived would not have allowed him to rise to the aristocracy, he is what brought much acclaim to the Esterházy royal family of Hungary. In this book written especially for young adults, readers will be taken back in time for a delightful musical journey.
Customer Reviews:
A book to help you better appreciate this composer of the very first rank.......2006-03-30
Karl Geiringer was a wonderful musicologist from Austria. He lived a long life (1899-1989) and wrote many wonderful papers and books. This book on Haydn is typical of his style (his wife, Irene, gets a collaborative credit, and that is just super, since she has helped him in all his books). The book is divided in two parts: the first being a biographical narrative and the second being a biography through his musical works.
The first part is organized chronologically with the chapters focused on key events and periods in Haydn's life. The second part is organized by compositional style and maturity. Geiringer divides Haydn's compositional life into five periods: youth, transition, romantic crisis, maturity, and consummate mastery. The author makes a great case for this division. Each of these chapters takes us through the various types of compositions Haydn wrote in these periods such as piano sonatas, symphonies, string quartets, masses, and so forth.
Mozart's musical genius was fostered by his father, Leopold, who was a famous violinist. Beethoven's father and grandfather were musicians, and J.S. Bach's ancestors and progeny were musicians for generations and produced more than a few of great quality. Franz Joseph Haydn's (1732 - 1809) father was a wheelwright and his beginnings were so modest that when Beethoven was shown a picture of Haydn's birthplace he said, "Strange that so great a man should have been born in so poor a home."
While Haydn's musical ability was recognized early and he was given good musical training, he was not a prodigy like Mozart nor did he achieve greatness early. Most of Haydn's most important study was done on his own and at great personal effort. It wasn't until he earned the chief musical post with the royal Hungarian family of Esterházy that his genius matured. Haydn said, "My prince was always satisfied with my works. Not only did I have the encouragement of constant approval, but as conductor of the orchestra I could make experiments ... and be as bold as I pleased. I was cut off from the world; there was no one to confuse or torment me, and I was forced to become original."
Haydn wrote a vast number of musical works in all the important forms and styles of his day. He set the example for younger composers such as Mozart and Beethoven who admired him enough to imitate him. He and Mozart were great friends whose admiration was mutual and profound. Who else in the entire earth could understand the other's work as well as they?
This year I have been fortunate to sing Haydn's "Harmoniemesse" ("Wind Band Mass"). It is one of the great treasures of the composer's vast output. He wrote 14 masses that we know of, but one is lost. This work being the last of them and the very last major work Haydn ever wrote. As Karl Geiringer noted in his biography of the composer, "... it represents a kind of farewell not only to the Mass form but to music itself. Motives and moods from earlier Masses reoccur, and Haydn displays once more his magical ability to use all elements of the contrapuntal style."
This biography will help you not only appreciate Haydn as a person and give you a greater insight into his music, it will help you realize what former generations knew better than us, that Haydn is in the very first rank of musical genius and that his music is full of revelations and delights.

Book Description
Concerts flourished in London during the second half of the eighteenth century as never before. Enterprising promoters developed subscription series around the new symphony orchestra, and the lucrative environment attracted both Mozart and Haydn, whose last twelve symphonies were written for London. This book is the first detailed investigation of a lively and innovative period in London's cultural life, combining a social study of concert audiences with analysis of their musical tastes and the repertoire they inspired.

Another excellent audio-biography from Siepmann.......2004-01-31
So far, the Naxos Life and Works series has given us boxed sets of CDs with the lives and works of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Verdi. They have all been written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann with the assistance of actors such as David Timson. To this impressive series we can now add "Joseph Haydn" (8.558091-94) on four CDs with a running time of 4 1/2 hours.
The running theme throughout this audiobiography is Haydn's marvelous sense of humor. This trait can be spotted from his music alone, but it is good to hear all the wonderful anecdotes concerning it that fill this recording. Musicians will be impressed by Haydn's loyalty to his players and the remarkable tact he showed in swaying his "serene highness" bosses to his way of thinking.
The recorded text is supported by many musical examples drawn from the deep pool of Naxos recordings. As with other entries in these series, I feel that some of them are a bit too long; but after all, the title of the series is Life and WORKS. David Timson is the voice of Haydn, and he is supported by actors Sam Dastor, Nigel Anthony, Steve Hodson, Roger May, and Frances Jeater.
As always with these Naxos sets, the booklet alone is worth the price you pay for the whole product. Its 146 pages include eight sections: Track lists, cast, historical background, Haydn in his time, his major works and their significance, a graded reading plan, recommended reading, personalities, a calendar of Haydn's life, a glossary, and advice on how to use the CD-ROM feature of these discs.
Highly recommended, as is the entire series.
