Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A well written book for beginners........1999-04-29

The author writes very well, but all too often the advice is a little thin. I liked his approach to handling money but for real practical advice I found another book more useful: "How To Invest $50 to $5,000" by Dunnan. However, both make excellent presents for young and/or inexperienced investors and savers.

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent advice for thoughtful investors........1999-03-17

Lowell's writing voice is engaging, intelligent, and refreshingly free of finance jargon. This is a primer for people who have more on their minds than their mutual fund returns. One of the very few books of this genre I could actually relate to, as someone with a healthy skepticism towards the American dream of riches and retirement. Written uncondescendingly and with attention to the often ignored but important issues of investors' social responsibilities, and if it is in fact possible to do well and do good at the same time. One of the few books of this genre that doesn't alienate me.

4 out of 5 stars okay.........1998-01-30

I liked it, and it was helpful, except it wasn't geared to COMPLETE beginers who have had zero experience to investing... I would have liked there to be a section telling you exactly what all the numbers (like in a wall st. journal) mean, and how they relate to a company... The glossary was very thin...

4 out of 5 stars Technical Analysis Simplified.......2007-10-15

Weinstein's book is an easy read. His simplified technical analysis or chart reading system for buying and selling stocks is easy to understand and seems very workable. His general concepts are very similar to William O'Neils (How To Make Money In Stocks), except that he doesn't use fundamental data in his buy or sell decisions.

Overall, I really like Weinstein's down-to-earth writing style. But, some of the charts were small so the ink made the lines appear kind of thick which made it lose some important details. Weinstein tells us volume was important in a breakout, but never really mentioned specifically the source of the volume. In the back of my mind, I had to fill in the source of the volume, which I learned from William O'Neil (How To Make Money In Stocks) that it came from professional or institutional buyers such as pension and mutual funds.

5 out of 5 stars Weinstein presents a simple strategy.......2007-08-31

Weinstein presents a simple strategy that I think is worth reading. His strategy involves price action using simple long-term moving average technical analysis with some short term ABC-like patterns (and other technical patterns). His strategy involves buying at favorable risk:reward setups that are subject to manipulation in this market since other participants know how to shake people out of positions and scare them away. However, this strategy can still work with with the additional technique of buying back once the strategy rules are revived. In other words, expect to be shaken out and then buy higher again. If the stock is set to go higher, it will continue the path of least resistance and eventually get in the sweet spot far away from the stop loss point.
The part that was especially notable was learning that the media knows news and emotion, but the price action speaks truth where it counts.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and well written book. But does it work so well today?.......2007-07-05

        I liked this book.
I appreciated the author for his schematic approach, and his desire to keep things clear and understandable.
the first part might annoy you if you still know what the market is.. but it's not so long.
The stage analysis presented here really gives you an important perspective on stocks and market "tone".
Reading the book you will be guided through a way to understand what stocks you should look for, why, and when to pick and discard them.
It doesn't give you "holy grail" tools, but it presents several simple tools working together to make an idea of what stock might be useful to buy long and which to sell short (and when to make it!).
In the final part it shows also some useful tools to evaluate the breadth of the market as whole.

I'm giving only 4 stars because a doubt remained: this stuff seemed to work very well in the 70's and 80's example showed: does it work so well today?
my idea (but I'm still in process to learn profitable trading, and I actually make only paper trading..) is that today could be much difficult to profit only with this strategies.
I think that this approach is invaluable as general guide, but you should use also other tools to have a real edge.

I would also suggest, before you blindly apply these rules, to find in the web some previous releases of recommendations that the authour issued for paying clients and see how they worked.

        3 out of 5 stars Techie's Temple.......2007-03-29

For those technically inclined to chartists and trying to figure out what's going on...

5 out of 5 stars Finally found the strategy which makes sense.......2007-03-10

The stage theory really makes the market clearer than ever before. I am sure the strategy described in the book works.

        5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading.......2006-12-02

Like most of the small handful of great investment books, not many know about this one but that is their loss. If you want to find the best investment books, stay away from the Cramer series and the ones that are top sellers because they are the same song and dance and do not teach you any skills. Another peice of advice is to steer clear of investment books written by professors since they have no real experience managing assets.

Dagnino's book is one of the very best and it is essential if you want a chance to become a great investor. Make no mistake though, following Dagnino's approach will not in itself lead you to riches. It is just one of many skills you must acquire in the long and very difficult process of becoming a good and then great investor.

I am an investment professional and this book is a critical read for novices and pros alike. You had better get this book now, because I do believe it is out of print and only inventory remains.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-06-18

One of the best and very fundamental book. Very well organized I have learned a great deal from this book. Must read.

5 out of 5 stars If you only read one book on investing. . . .......2005-12-24

I've been doing survey reading in investing (including Jim Cramer's new book, Sane Investing..., which is an enjoyable, informative read) because I want to take better control over my finances--even if you hand your money over to a professional, you owe it to yourself to be able to judge the performance of your portfolio and understand your investment risk in any market. Accordingly, you need a proper understanding of financial markets and economic cycles, and more importantly, how the two interrelate. If I had to recommend only ONE book, it would be this one. It is terrific: well written, informative and designed to make you a more knowledgeable (and consequently a more profitable)investor. You will not be disappointed. For me, it put all of the pieces together. And if you like the book, be sure to visit George's website, Peterdag.com. (I'm not affiliated at all, but became a subscriber to George's service after swooning over the book.)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read. Very well structured and organized........2001-07-14

I have read several books regarding the stock market, charting and so forth that pretty much left much to be desired. And after the stock market fiasco of 2000 - 2001 where virtually everyone's equity evaporated, many people were left asking themselves, what happened? George Dagnino's book explains the concepts of the business cycle and how all economic factors correlate together. It gives you a clear outlook on how to anticipate market trends, keep an eye on indicators and protect your investment.

Overall, probably THE best book I have ever read on the economy and the stock market.

                Book Description

The relationship between growth, inequality, and poverty lies at the heart of development economics. This volume draws together many of the most important recent contributions to the controversies surrounding this topic. Some of the chapters help explain why there is profound disagreement on crucial issues of growth, poverty and inequality within academic circles, and among organizations and various groups active in the development field. Another central theme is the cross-country evidence on the relationship between growth and poverty, and the extent to which it is valid to draw policy conclusions from this empirical evidence. The volume also shows how new microeconomic techniques such as poverty maps and microsimulation models can be used to improve poverty analysis and the design of pro-poor policies. The overall conclusion points to the need for diverse strategies towards growth and poverty, rather than simple blanket policy rules. Initial conditions, specific country structures, and time horizons all play a significant role. Initial conditions affect the speed with which growth reduces poverty and can also determine whether policies such as trade liberalization have a pro-poor or an anti-poor outcome. Improved education is valuable in itself, and also contributes to poverty reduction; but its effect on inequality depends on supply and demand factors, which differ significantly across countries. Likewise, the quantitative impact on poverty of redistribution from the rich to the poor vis-a-vis an increase in total national income can vary greatly across countries. Hence the need for creative approaches to poverty which take full account of the specific circumstances of individual nations and which assign a central role to inequality analysis in the discussion of poverty-alleviation policies.

                        Book Description

Journey into the extraordinary life and times of nineteenth-century writer Fanny Crosby, the prolific author of thousands of well-loved American hymns. Blinded at the age of three weeks by medication that was too strong, Fanny determined at an early age to share her faith and the joy of her conversion with everyone she met--and eventually sharing them with the millions of Christians who still sing her sacred words in such familiar titles as "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," "Praise Him, Praise Him," "Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour," "Near the Cross," and "Blessed Assurance." This novelized biography of wife, mother, renowned poet, and social activist is an inspiring example of one woman's personal triumph over heartbreak. The reader is swept back in time through many diary excerpts and anecdotes. Raised by a loving mother and grandmother, Fanny, with her "remarkable memory," burning desire for an education, and early compassion for the homeless and handicapped, is here introduced to the reader. This sensitivity would eventually endear her to many influential friends and advisors, and even some American presidents. She prayed that God would use her music to help others see His grace and goodness. A devoted, outspoken advocate for the needy of New York City, she was the first woman to lobby Congress for schools for the blind at a time when formal education was rare. The book contains many of Fanny's familiar lyrics and poems, written under more than 100 pseudonyms, and the stories behind them.

                        1 out of 5 stars Absolute Dreck.......2006-03-03

Having read quite a few biographies of Fanny Crosby, as she is one of my 'heroes of the faith,' I would recommend the new book by Blumhofer, or the old standby by Bernard Ruffin. This book, by Darlene Neptune, isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

1 out of 5 stars Fanny Crosby Doesn't Live Here.......2002-05-14

If you think you'd like to learn something about the hymnwriter Fanny J. Crosby, don't read this book. Instead, opt for the old standard, Fanny Crosby by Bernard Ruffin, or for Don Hustad's more recent look at Crosby's life. Neptune's book is simply not worth reading, much less owning. The title page bills it as "the most complete history ever written," a risky claim to say the least. It is poorly written ("At the age of three mother and I moved. . .", p. 29), indifferently punctuated, and riddled with errors. Was Fanny Crosby really the personal friend and spiritual mentor of every president during her lifetime? Come on! She met several presidents, generally on formal occasions when she rendered a "poetical address", but only her acquaintance with Grover Cleveland approached close personal friendship. See page 179 to discover that Grover Cleveland was a great Union general who is buried on New York's Riverside Drive! You're unlikely to find that in print anywhere else. The book's one redeeming feature is its collection of photographs. Neptune claims the book is part of her larger response to an urge God placed in her heart in 1996 as she lingered at Fanny Crosby's grave: "Pick up the seed that has been buried here. . . plant it and bring it back to life for My Glory." She steps back into 1914 to interview Crosby. The technique may work for her regular Crosby impersonations, but it does not succeed in this book. If I could assign it less than one star, I would.

                        Book Description

By the beloved director of the Jerusalem International Book Fair, this moving memoir follows the author's life from his Lithuanian childhood to the death camps in Dachau, and his years after the liberation, helping to build the State of Israel. Persuaded by a legion of adoring international book editors and publishers around the world to write his account of the Holocaust, Zev Birger describes in this riveting, ultimately uplifting story how his idyllic childhood in a Zionist family in Kovno, Lithuania, was destroyed-first by the Soviet invasion in 1940, then by the German occupation-and his subsequent deportation to the ghetto. In powerful, simple prose, he portrays his family's efforts to survive there, which ended in their discovery by the SS in a cellar hideaway as gunfire sounded from the approaching front. His family was separated and deported to the Dachau concentration camp, where Birger was forced into heavy labor in an underground arms factory. The only survivor in his family, he was brought to an American-run army hospital after the liberation, where he was so emaciated he was given up for dead. He rallied against all odds and went on to help Jews establish themselves in Israel, where he played an active role in the construction of the Israeli state, especially in building the book publishing and film production industries within the country, and bringing them recognition throughout the world. Originally published in Germany in 1997 by Luchterhand jointly with eight other German publishers, this is the first English-language edition.

It's a short book, but Zev Birger's valuable memoir will not fail to move or impress. As a believer in humanity (despite tremendous suffering) and a champion of culture, he is a gift to the world.
