Portrait of a hero .......2004-10-31

Mainly and above all, this book gives you a great insight into what might be called "the golden age of archaeology in Egypt". I greatly enjoyed all the little stories covering the various social events of that time (particularly the "party at the ombdeh's") which manage to cover Weigall's own colourful imagination and way of storytelling.

Nevertheless, this biography never quite suceeds in bringing you near Arthur Weigall as a person. What I disliked most was the apologetic tone in which Hankey tried to "answer" several references to Weigall made by TGH James in his book "Howard Carter - The Path to Tutankhamun". It almost seems as if Hankey desperately tries to make clear to the reader that in reality, Weigall was a truly "heroic" guy, fighting for Egypt's heritage, while the "evil" Howard Carter was putting stones in his way.
There is no doubting the fact that Carter was a pretty difficult character but reading Hankey's book, one begins to suspect that Weigall was one as well - a fact not really admitted by his granddaughter.

In comparison to James, who painted a very objective and not in the least biased picture of the person he portrayed in his biography (Carter), Hankey trusts in letting Weigall's own views and thoughts speak for themselves without ever trying to question them.
For me, Weigall's behaviour towards Carter and Carnarvon during the Tutankhamun excavation is still more than questionable, even if one has to share his views concerning the "Times"-agreement and the division of antiquities.

In the end, for me, Howard Carter with all his faults remains the more interesting personality, especially when compared with Julie Hankey's semi-perfect Arthur Weigall.

Great story about a great story teller.......2001-12-08

This book is really a great read. Not only does it give you a great deal of insight about Weigall and his exploits, but it also has a lot of good stories about Egypt and it's exploration during it's most colorful time period of the early 20th century. I have always enjoyed Weigall's books and his ability to weave a good story and describe what it would be like to be exploring various sites while on his inspection tours.

This book really goes into a great deal about his crusade to save and catalogue monuments instead of just digging for "treasures". He doesn't seem to get his due for what he tried to accomplish under the difficult conditions he had to work within at the time. What I also found interesting was the perspective of his relationship with Howard Carter from more his point of view versus what is more often seen discussed from Cater's. Being that it was written by his grand-daughter I'm sure there's a little bit of bias there. Either way, it is truly a great book written about a great author.

Wiegall showed that a history book doesn't have to be dry and boring. It seems that his grand-daughter inherited that trait too!

This exuberantly illustrated book celebrates the sophistication, vivacity, and significance of improvisational African-Aemrican quilts, both as artistic achievements and as expressions of African-American traditions. The knowledge, attitudes, and values carried across the Atlantic by enslaved Africans appear to have informed a quiltmaking tradition so powerful that, to this day, it preserves its identity in a special province of African-American quilts. Such "Afro-traditional" quilts are made by people who have no formal art training and who usually do not consider themselves artists; they learned their craft and absorbed its aesthetics by watching and helping their mothers, aunts, and grandmothers who, in turn, learned form previous generations. The resulting--often highly idiosyncratic--quilts call out to be seen as the works of art that they are. The brilliance of this work must be partially credited to a tradition which encourages individual expression and provides a context in which the talents of individual artists can flourish. Improvisation, pervasive in black African art and familiar as a basic element of many African-American musical forms, is a vital force in this tradition. The artists maintain a generous attitude toward the accidental, embracing innovations that originate beyond the conscious domain. they use approximate measurement and "flexible patterning," in which the design, conceived of as a an invitation to variation, will not repeat, but will materialize in a sequence of visual elaborations. Afro-traditional attitudes and methods are antithetical to the standard American quiltmaking tradition--practiced by both whites and blacks--in which great value is placed on precise measurement and exact pattern replication. M. Y.'s experience with Shakespearean acting goes back to Bassanio in 'Merchant of Venice' in grammar school. His formal training took place with the Youth Theatre at Oxford. He appeared in 'Twelfth Night' while a student at Oxford Univesity.

He lived as extraordinary characters in an extraordinary world. Acting was in his blood early on as he'd posed in an Indian outfit, and photo of him mugging it with his swim trunks falling off. His amateru acting jobs rounded him into a professional actor who could play many diverse parts. He was a classically trained performer.

Other Shakespeare performances include appearing in the movie, 'The Taming of the Shrew,' with Richard Burton, the 1967 movie, 'Romeo and Juliet,' and 'Hamlet' in 1970. Zach wrote his Master's dissertation on the religious aspects of 'Hamlet' and used the word 'tainted' multiple times.

He appeared in Tennnessee Williams play, 'Out Cry;' he considered that prodigious playwright as a friend, as he did Cary Grant. On Broadway he was in 'Bent' in 1980 and played at the Palace with Jeanne Moreau. In 1981, he was Robinson Crusoe in 'Vendredi.' In Santa Fe, he was Cyrano de Bergerac in 1981.

His movies include 'The Three Musketeers' with Oliver Reed, 'The Four Musketeers' with Raquel Welch, 'The Master of Ballantrae' with Sir John Gielgud, 'The Secret of the Sahara,' with Andie McDowell, and 'The Long Shadow,' with Liv Ullmann. "My work is also my collection -- a portraait gallery of characters ... some modeled with truth and detail."

The photo sections speak louder than words. He married photographer Pat McCallum from Jamaica, who snapped a lot of the pictures in this book. He called himself "a traveling player" a la Shakespeare's time. Some big names such as William Holden, Peter O'Toole, Jennifer Jones, Michael Caine, Betty Pinchard, Robert E. Lee, Anthony Hopkins and Betty (Lauren) Bacall to whit your interest in their connections. It was a pleasure.

I found Michael York's book to be funny and very humerous.He injects his English wit into his life story w/is a joy to read.He starts w/his birth and goes on form there.It is a funny documentation of his life,rise in the theater and everything in between.This book is a must for Michael York Fans.

What a bunch of low life criminals. I bought this book as a lark, but came away mad. The energy some people put into getting your money is almost more then if they went out and got a job. This book is basically a history of all the most popular scams and con men in America over the last 200 years. The author must have spent a tremendous amount of time in researching the book because it is very detailed. If there is a scam out there and not in this book then I doubt it made money. The writing is good with an easy to read pace and sentence structure. My only complaint was the amount of detail, at times I got a little tired of hearing about the 5th best guy at the so and so scam. The book could have used a little more aggressive editing. With that said, if you are interested in scams you will get a lot of entertainment out of this book.

The History of Fake Injuries, On Purpose.......1999-12-01

If you ever want to know how the history of screwing insurance companies came about, this is the book for you. And for some reason I'm sure Dornstein left out about 10,000 more stories that he could have added in the book. Like a book with a lot of "stories," some stories are better than others and you tend to have to sift through the ho-hum parts but the book is very well written and composed. Get it for that uncle that's still waiting on his accident claim of "slipping in the supermarket aisle as he was trying to reach for some generic beer" to settle while he has to "do time in the barcalounger while detectives with video cameras have to monitor him."

As a Property and Casualty Investigator for Nationwide SIU, I found the book to be very informative, and enlightening.

This is one of his best poems and also included in his last book, IN THE CLEARING. It goes along well with the Michael York autobiography. I am wondering if his title was 'lifted' from this poem about Darwin and evolution, about love and sorrow.

The Universe is but the Thing of things,
The things but balls all going round in rings.
Some of them mighty huge, some mighty tiny,
All of them radiant and mighty shiny.

They mean to tell us all was rolling blind
Till accidentally it hit on mind
In an albino moneky in a jungle
And even then it had to grope and bungle.

Nach den Türkenkriegen war der südliche Teil des Habsburgerreiches verwüstet. Dessen Neubesiedlung durch deutsche Auswanderer führte zu einer der größten Kolonisationen der Neuzeit. Eines dieser Gebiete war die Batschka, dem Land zwischen Donau und Theiss. Die Vorfahren der Autorin wanderten großteils unter Joseph II. dorthin aus und wurden in der größten Gemeinde dieser Phase - Tscherwenka - angesiedelt. Deren Nachfahren lebten dort bis zum 8. Oktober 1944 als mitten im 2. Weltkrieg die Flucht/Vertreibung bedingt durch das Vordringen der Roten Armee und der Partisanen Titos ihren Anfang nahm. Anne Jung (später verehelichte Holden) beschreibt aus der Sicht eines kleinen Mädchens tagebuchähnlich in "In Search of a Warm Room" (Warren Publishing, Cornelius, NC, 2002) was sie danach alles erlebte. Am besagten Tag um 12 Uhr mittags verließ ihre Familie auf Pferdewagen Tscherwenka. Ihre Irrfahrt durch ein Europa im zu Ende gehenden 2.Weltkrieg beschreibt den Wahnsinn dieser Zeit. Auf der Suche nach einem Entkommen aus der Not emigriert die Familie mit Anne, dem Mädchen, in die USA, wo sie die Schule besucht, einen Bachelor und einen Master macht, heiratet und mittlerweile 3 Kinder und 6 Enkelkinder hat. Ihre Erlebnisse auf der Flucht/Vertreibung haben sie jedoch nicht losgelassen, sodaß sie beschloß, ihre Erinnerungen niederzuschreiben. "In Search of a Warm Room" ist das Ergebnis. Lesenswert!

In Search of a Warm Room.......2003-04-08

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to know what life was like during WWII for the everyday ethnic German. Although not widely known, the everyday German suffered at the hands of Nazi Germany. This is a compelling read of suffering and triumph of the human spirit. It is a must read for all students of WWII.
