5 out of 5 stars strong erotic dark romantic fantasy .......2005-05-09

As children siblings Weir and Genevieve Saur watch, the Tribunal steals their family estate leaving them with not even time to mourn the death of their father. Thirsting for revenge, the pair manages to survive; eventually they become pirates plundering the coast of Serenia.

Sailing the Wind Lass, the Saurs and their crew come across a "ghost" ship, a prison vessel with two near dead survivors, a crew member and a prisoner, trapped in the hull. The convict is Syn-Jern Sorn, son of the Duke of Winterstorm, who Weir holds culpable for his father's death. Weir wants Syn-Jern dead while Genny feels he should not be faulted for the sins of the father. She prevails and as he heals, they learn that his step-brother Trace Edward Sorn betrayed him. As the Weirs decide whether to abet Syn-Jern on his quest to devastate the Tribunal, he hides his power that if used could kill many including innocent people even as he and Genny begin to fall in love.

The second novel in the WindTales miniseries trilogy is a strong erotic dark romantic fantasy that can be enjoyed as a stand alone but is enhanced by insider references to other Wind stories especially WINDFALL. The story line is action-packed, yet as expected by Charlotte Boyett-Compo, the key cast members are fully developed and not just the lead couple and her brother; for instance others like the Saurs' piracy partner Patrick embellish the plot as the audience cares for them. A final twist will stun fans as this fabulous author shakes her readers from complacency as few if any authors in continuing series ever do. Encore kudos to a terrific writer.

Syn-Jern Sorn is a man that has been through more suffering in his lifetime than any man should ever have to go through. But regardless of this, there is something deep within Syn-Jern that keeps him going, driving him, and not letting him give up, no matter how much he wants to. He has been stripped of his title, shunned by all that knew him, killed in self-defense, framed for a murder he didn't commit, and sent to a place that death would be have been preferable: The Labyrinth. This is a prison from which no man returns in his right mind, if he returns at all.

When the end of Syn-Jern's 10-year sentence at The Labyrinth comes and goes without his release, he knows he's never meant to leave there alive and somehow manages to escape. This leads him on a perilous journey in which he endures even more pain and anguish, almost losing his life on more than one occasion, but he also manages to find joy and happiness. On his quest to reclaim what is rightfully his, he makes a few friends and finds his destiny. But will he live long enough to fulfill this destiny?

***** Outstanding, A definite must read! This book doesn't just draw you into it, it makes you feel like you are there and a part of the events as they unfold. WINDCHANCE is one book that you definitely don't want to miss. *****

5 out of 5 stars second novel in The WindTales Trilogy!!.......2001-04-23

A storm tossed sea leads the Windlass's crew into a fantastic adventure. The saucy Geneveve Saur (Genny), her brother Weir, and her brother's pirating partner Patrick Kasella, along with crew, stumble upon a ghost ship. Plundered by pirates and left because she wasn't seaworthy, they explore the dredge, and are amazed to find two men locked behind a hidden bulkhead panel.

The last crewmember of the ill-fated ship has saved the life of a convict, but in their hiding, they have became trapped. The convict is filthy, starved and dying of Labyrinth fever. Having served his ten-year sentence for killing a man, a crime of which he is was innocent, Syn-Jern Sorn had escaped the hell-hole two years after his sentence should have ended. But Syn-Jern is no ordinary prisoner. The son of a Duke, the victim of cruelty and injustice, his incredible spirit continues to display itself throughout the novel.

If you love tales of intrigue, magic and mystery, I highly recommend this novel. For those already familiar with Charlee Boyett-Compo work, you'll enjoy the allusions to her other novels. All readers will find themselves enthralled by this gripping tale. As with many of her works, keep a box of tissues handy, for the ending will leave you shocked, tearful, and amazed by the beauty of the tale.

          5 out of 5 stars Windchance.......2000-06-17

The world changed irrevocably the day that Captain Weir Saur and his sister Genevieve boarded the derelict ship. Neither they, nor their pirate crew, realised that their find would have such far-reaching consequences.

Searching the deserted vessel, they discovered that it was a prison ship on it's way to Ghurn Colony - home of the Labyrinth - the cruelest penal colony ever devised. Just as they were leaving the cursed ship to its ghosts, they heard thumping from the hold. Perhaps it wasn't deserted after all, either that, or the superstitious First Mate was right and they were about to be eaten by NightWinds.

Searching the hold, they were nearly overcome by the most disgusting stench - gagging, Genevieve Saur (Genny) discovers a hidden door in the bulkhead. When they finally pry it open, they are horrified to find two men crammed into the space beyond.

Their horror soon turns to pity when they find that one of the men is close to death, having been inhumanely abused. Evidence of brutal lashings, malnutrition and exposure were just some of his symptoms.

Nursing the sick man they discover the Serenian Penal Colony Identification Mark tattooed on his wrist - this man had escaped from the Maze, and the prison transport was obviously taking him back to the Labrinth - taking him back to die.

This immediately garned their sympathy, as the Captain's best friend, Patrick Kasella was similarly marked. Both had endured the Tribunal's punishment, and both had escaped. There was no way they would let the foul Dominion's priests lay hands on this man again.

The crewman rescued with the prisoner was in much better shape and was able to tell the Windlass' crew the horrors the sick man had endured. Crucifixion, whipping and keel-hauling were just some of the punishments he had survived.

Patrick, Genny, and Weir were devoted nurses, until they learned the prisoner's identity...

He was the son of their most despised enemy! His father, Duke Giles Sorn, had turned their father into the Tribunal and taken their lands. Sending Genny to be raised in the hell-hole Galrath nunnery and Weir to the orphanage in Fealst. Separated for nearly twenty years the siblings had only just found each other two years ago, and were united in their love for each other, and their burning desire for vengeance against the man who had ruined their lives.

Patrick had a hard time convincing the pair to let the patient live, but their innate good natures also fought their vengeful desires. Watching Syn-Jern Sorn overcome his injuries and battle to get back into shape earned him Weir's grudging respect - even if Genny's heart was harder.

Returning to the Privateer Brotherhood at Montyne Cay, Syn-Jern Sorn's courage, determination and bravery softens even the hardest heart - until he is considered one of them. Pirate loyalty is a tremendous force and when Syn-Jern is recaptured, the Privateer Brotherhood is not just going to stand by and see him taken. Even unforgiving Genny won't object, as he was captured trying to protect her!

So starts an intricate tale of honour, heroism and friendship that will change the lives of many, as "honourless cuthroats" attempt to overthrow an evil Tribunal that has enslaved the populace for generations.

A gripping saga that has no equal. Charlotte Boyett-Compo does not spare her heroes, so a happy ending is never assured.

Thank goodness there are so many more books in the WindLegend Saga, I for one want to read them all!

5 out of 5 stars This is my favorite of Charlotte Boyett-Compo's books.......2000-04-05

Syn-Jern Sorn is a wonderful hero. He's been through so much but he's still capable loving Genny Sarn with his whole being. He still has to go back to where he came from to right some wrongs though. I was pulling for Syn the whole book. This was most definitely a page turner!

Last year I was diagnosed with lung cancer. This book was a godsend! You can jump around and go straight to the questions most pressing on your mind (Will I need chemo? What are my survival chances? Where should I go for treatment?) Although the book is titled 100 Questions..., it answered thousands of my questions. It's an easy read, reliable and fairly comprehensive. It's a must for the newly diagnosed.

Really a fun book to have for the railroader with someone who loves to cook. Tons of fine recipies from railroads all over the country. SOME EXPERIENCE REQUIRED! I tried my hand at a dish, but it didn't turn out right despite following directions to the letter. Recently, Mom and I were successful. Her years of cooking experience handed down from Grandma paid off, because she noticed a missing step. Some basic preparation steps are left out becuase by the time a cook was assigned to the diner, he didn't need to see everything on paper. Since then, Mom and I have enjoyed many more weekend cooking classes with the dining car cookbook. Although many projects have turned out well, I'll always recall our first as my personal favorite: Western Pacific Rice Cream Pie. Good times!

5 out of 5 stars Nostaligia food at its best.......2006-07-27

The book "Dining by Rail" was purchased at the urging of a ten-year old son who is a rabid railfan. The book not only has a treasure trove of the most famous recipes from all the different rail lines, but it features a marvelous history of railroads from the point of view of the customer, the cooks, and others whose job it was to provide customer service. One also learns how the menus on the trains reflected the relations with the most important commercial customers of the railroad, an aspect nostalgic railfans don't always think about.

The book is well written and carefully researched. The pictures are evocative, and the recipes very easy to follow and recreate.

Altogether, this book is providing my son and me with a interesting and tasty railroad education!

                      Book Description

The American economy and society are undergoing vast transformations, including a renaissance of capitalism, a great wave of technological change, and a restructuring of businesses and industries. A superindustrial society is evolving, and there is a new social cycle that initially offers a greater understanding of problems along with practical means to their solutions. This work addresses the changing state of America's economy and society in its global context, painting a serious but positive portrait of the United States in the next decade. In this context, Irving Leveson carefully explores long term trends and prospects, provides an integrated treatment of issues that are usually examined in discrete fragments, offers a context for planning and decision making, and contributes thorough analyses of specific trends and issues. The book is structured around three major themes. The first is the need for longer term perspectives in both personal and business affairs; the second focuses on key trends, and the way in which some will be significantly weakened, nullified, or reversed in the 1990s; and the third details the serious business, social, and economic challenges that remain to be dealt with. Leveson charts the transformation of America and the economic conservatism and market orientation that resulted in the renaissance of capitalism, as well as the long cycle upswing of economic restructuring. He then turns to the coming superindustrial society and new social cycle, along with the challenges, opportunities, and problems that the 1990s and the next century will bring. Throughout the work, he offers perspectives on such topics as prospects for corporate restructuring, financial globalization and volatility, health futures, and the relation of business strategy to long cycle evolution. An accompanying appendix provides comparisons of long cycles, and the study concludes with a selected bibliography. This work will be a useful tool for corporate managers and executives, government officials, and policy planners, as well as a valuable resource for courses in economic studies and public policy. It will also be an important addition to the collections of both public and academic libraries.

                        Book Description

Few countries in Latin America have undergone as much economic and social change in the last 40 years as Brazil: an annual average rate of economic growth of 7% between 1950 and 1980; 4 decades of state-led import-substitution industrialization; rapid urbanization which in less than 30 years transformed a predominantly rural country into one in which two-thirds of the population live in cities; a significant enlargement of the middle classes whose mass society values and consumer expectations came to match those of the developed world. Yet in spite of these changes, Brazil stagnated in terms of income inequalities and levels of poverty: one third of its population is living below the poverty line, another third only just above it. Brazil now faces the most serious economic crisis in its history, with spiralling unemployment and an ever increasing deterioration in living standards.

This volume concentrates on some of the pressing problems which are essential to understanding the questions of social and economic development and democratic consolidation; it brings together some of the best known academics in the field.

                          Book Description

As a privileged insight into operational thinking within governments and aid agencies, Cities in the 1990s addresses the key issues facing urban areas in developing countries. Based on an important workshop involving representatives and senior officers from a host of aid agencies and governments, it exposes to public scrutiny the approaches emerging in the wake of a sea-change in aid policy away from rural development and towards urban areas. In 1991, the World Bank and the United Nations separately published new policy agendas on urbanization in the 1990s. These argued a new case in the face of burgeoning urban growth in developing countries, where the cities and mega-cities accommodate not simply the majority of the population but also most of the poor. This predominance of the urban domain is acknowledged and reflected in the main thrust of the new agendas: that cities are the main means of transforming society as a whole in economic terms and of alleviating poverty in developing countries. Published in association with the Overseas Development Agency, the book includes summaries of these policy documents, two major papers by Kenneth Watts and Nigel Harris, and the main speeches discussions and summaries at the workshop, which was convened by the Development Planning Unit at University College London. The editor's introduction lays out the context of thought, policy and action within which the new agendas can be located. The book is far from being a work of "ivory-tower" scholarship: the discussions are about how governments should act, and how realistic and relevant the new policy directions are in operational terms. Cities in the 1990s is sure to be regarded as essential reading for anyone concerned with the staggering problems and challenges facing the developing countries today.

The 1990s were a decade of historical significance with numerous and remarkable changes. It was also a time of considerable reforms that strengthened the policy framework in a large number of countries. Yet the resulting growth experiences of developing countries have been extremely varied and
often below expectations. What have we learned from this experience? And how can these lessons be applied to the challenges we face in the new millennium? This book brings together the insights and experiences of some of the world's leading policymakers and global thought leaders, individuals who
have had substantial influence on the policy reforms and development strategies in their native countries. Sharing their unique perspectives, these "practitioners of development" explain the reasons for the uneven outcomes of the 1990s and, with the benefit of hindsight, draw relevant lessons for
the future. Essays by leading global economists cover a wide range of topics, from the Washington Consensus as a policy prescription for development to the successes and failures of post-Communist transition countries. Those interested in economics, political science, and international studies will
find much to think about in this challenging collection.

                                  Book Description

Europe is at a critical stage in its economic development. There seems to be a widespread desire to pursue coherent initiatives which address current issues but it is unclear which policies would fit the agenda.

Europe's Economic Challenge analyzes the wide ranging issues in economic strategy and considers future research possibilities. The book considers broad approaches to industrial strategy; looking at policy mix, institutional conditions for a more dynamic market and the processes of creating a democratic industrial structure. The authors focus on experiences in various countries, both in Europe and North America, in different sectors of the economy, and on the implications of European policies on Third World industrialization. The work includes a detailed discussion of the size of the public sector, innovation, R & D, entrepreneurship and inward investment. Europe's Economic Challenge poses some demanding questions and suggestions, discussion and analysis which provides a valuable contribution to the search for a successful way forward.

Thinking of putting yourself hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt? Buying a house is likely the most significant, exciting, scary purchase you'll ever make. Doing some careful research and knowing all the angles beforehand is well advised--and you can start with The Smart Home Buyer's Handbook. The first chapter, "What Can You Afford?", is quite well done, providing easily applicable formulas for calculating your monthly fees, depending on the amount financed and the interest rates of the loan. It also explains the kind of housing-expense ratio (monthly fees divided by monthly gross income) lenders look for, so you can reach educated decisions about just how much house you're actually in the market to buy. Once that most major of decisions is carefully reached, Keating moves on to assist in choosing a house, taking into account neighborhoods, home designs, issues of construction, and how to go about evaluating a used home. Leading you through all the steps of negotiating and closing the deal, Keating concludes with some practical advice on moving into your new purchase and getting the most financial interest, leverage, and payback from your new financial investment. David Keating's home handbook carefully explores all the issues, from types of mortgages and how interest rates work to foundations, brokers, and tax deductions. He does this all in clear, easy-to-understand language that demystifies the terminology and laws that would otherwise bring on a headache and make you think that renting for the rest of your life isn't really so bad. --Stephanie Gold

                                            Book Description

Duke Ellington (1899-1974) was one of the most romantic, flamboyant, and charismatic figures in the world of jazz. This distinctive biography, published on the centenary of his birth, draws on rare archival material to interweave Ellington's own observations and reminiscences with those who knew and worked with him. The text also includes a wealth of Ellington memorabilia to re-create in vivid narrative and illustration the jazz great's life and musical artistry against the background of his colorful times.

Stuart Nicholson's skillful use of first-hand accounts allows the reader to fully experience Ellington's story and to relive the vibrant jazz scene in which he worked. The author charts the course of his brilliant career, from sign writer, pianist, and poolroom hustler in Washington, D.C., to star performer at Harlem's Cotton Club, to internationally acclaimed bandleader, composer, and arranger. He offers revealing insights into the private man, recounting his strengths, faults, humor, attitude toward business, and love of women. Nicholson also explores Ellington's struggles as a black artist in the white-dominated entertainment world.

This engaging and innovative biography provides the most authentic portrait yet available of the legendary jazz musician.

There are a handful of books about jazz which provide musical insights and feelings and opinions which pull the reader into the lives of those who do the job of making music - still probably the best is HEAR ME TALKIN' TO YA edited by Shapiro and Hentoff along with Stuart Nicholson author of A PORTRAIT OF DUKE ELLINGTON Reminiscing in TEMPO. Another is STRAIGHT LIFE, the story of ART PEPPER. This is not to deny the brilliance of FOUR LIVES IN THE BEBOP BUSINESS or MR JELLY LORD, but it is hard to match the excitement of reading the words of those who made the music, judiciously edited of course. A PORTRAIT OF DUKE ELLINGTON is up there with the best books I've read on jazz. Its added value is that its subject is one of the most important musicians of the 20th century. Its fascination is how his creative juices were pushed by the imperatives of the time - deadlines were something the Duke apparently thrived on. On the other hand, pigeonholing may have held him back from becoming an even greater composer. Some of the great scenes in the book include one recounted by Sonny Greer on a performance in England when the band preceding them on the programme suddenly stopped in the middle of its performance to play God Save the King - The Prince of Wales (nicknamed the Prince of Wails by Fats Waler I believe) had entered the auditorium. But this was nothing to the reception that the Ellington band received when it performed. They were not used to ten minute standing ovations. There's no getting past the fact that Europeans, or music lovers outside the States, seem to have taken "jazz" or "modern improvised music" much more seriously than the place of its birth. This may still be the case today. A PORTRAIT OF DUKE ELLINGTON also contains editorial factual comments, examples of bill posters, advertising, and a series of FBI Memoes which would be hilarious if they were not so frighteningly stupid. A PORTRAIT OF DUKE ELLINGTON is also an excellent social history of the time from the 20's to the 70's, at least from the perspective of members of the Ellington Orchestra. Vivid and touching portraits abound, including Junior Raglin, Bubber Miley, and Sweet Pea Strayhorn. There are a few guffaws, many chuckles and a few tears in this wonderful book. Especially for music lovers, but any intelligent reader would find much to enjoy about one story of America's greatest cultural contribution to the century past.

This is an extremely readable work. The author has compiled extracts from interviews with Ellington, band members and family spanning his life and career, presenting the material as an oral history. The reader is given a strong insight into how Ellington worked and what made him such a great and unique composer, band leader and human being. I found this book to be extremely involving, often moving me to laughter or tears. I would only complain that the writer has perhaps done too good a job editorially with his material in that he could have risked boring us a little by including much more. The upside of this is that the book should be enjoyable to anyone who has even the remotest interest in the man, the music or the period of his life. This book is an extremely fitting testament to a man who is without doubt one of the foremost figures in 20th Century culture .
