        Book Description

In 1762 James Boswell, then twenty-two years old, left Edinburgh for London. The famous Journal he kept during the next nine months is an intimate account of his encounters with the high-life and the low-life in London. Frank and confessional as a personal portrait of the young Boswell, the Journal is also revealing as a vivid portrayal of life in eighteenth-century London. This new edition includes an introduction by Peter Ackroyd, which discusses Boswell's life and achievement.

        5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2005-03-31

I read this book to prepare for a trip to London a few months ago and loved it! What an honest journal that sums up the wonderful daily life of a prolific man. There are no big ideas or revelations but I got so much out of each and every detail Boswell offered. Extremely insightful and engrossing!

        4 out of 5 stars Where's the video?.......2002-09-17

Tired of all those solemn "memoirs" and "remembrances" that are on the library shelves? Well, this one will knock your socks off!
If Boswell were alive today and using videotape instead of a quill pen, the talk shows would have him as their constant guest.

I'm not sure if I'd want to have known him, but this lecher, alcoholic, and moocher had a keen eye for London high- and low-life that will keep you hanging on every page.

        5 out of 5 stars Pure delight.......2002-02-19

To anyone who, like myself, has found a real and deep enjoyment in reading the Life of Johnson, I can only recommend Boswell's own diaries. The first volume - his 'London Journal' starting in the year he met Johnson - is pure delight. Boswell always saw himself as a character acting in the drama of life, and he could be almost excruciatingly honest and objective about himself. His voluminous diaries record all the trivia, triumphs, and despairs of his own life, day by day and year by year.

My own opinion is that Boswell is a far better diarist than Pepys, though not nearly as well known in this respect. There is a fascination about seeing his whole life recorded from youth to shortly before his death, with all the same force and liveliness that went into his Life of Johnson. His inner life is at least as entertaining as his outer life. He seems totally determined to write about himself as he wrote about Johnson - warts and all.

It's this courage and honesty about himself that makes us respect Boswell even when he is at his most foolish or debauched. The diaries make it extremely clear that he was no idiot, and that the Life of Johnson was no fortuitous masterpiece. From his diaries he comes across as a deeply sensitive, romantic, self-conscious man. Charming, likeable, and often playing the clown to his acquaintances; but often filled with self-doubt, frustration, insecurity, and a deep depression that he concealed from all except his closest friends.

We see Boswell puffed up with vanity at some silly social success, and the same Boswell quietly devoting large amounts of time and money that he could ill spare to helping people in trouble. We see Boswell in love again and again with totally unsuitable women, and eventually marrying the cousin who had always been a good, close friend rather than an object of wild romance. We see Boswell in his vibrant youth, and his tragic final years, as an alcoholic filled with bitter shame and despair, yet unable to reform.

His diaries are certainly one of the great undiscovered treasures of literature. They deserve to be a lot better known than they are.

        5 out of 5 stars A timeless classic.......1999-11-19

It has been quite awhile since I have read this book but and can remember few details. What sticks in the mind is the complete humanity displayed by its author. Frankly, Boswell is unlikable and hardly to be admired but his passion and candidness make this book very readable today. Not many tomes from this era can make this claim. It is a must read for both those interested in Johnson and those students of the human condition.

5 out of 5 stars Why is the rest out of print?.......1999-11-04

Here's a Boswell diary entry. 'Good heavens, what a loose did we give to amorous dalliance! ...In a moment I felt myself animated with the strongest power of love, and, from my dearest creature's kindness, had a most luscious feast. Proud of my godlike vigour, I soon resumed the noble game. I was in full glow of health. Sobriety had preserved me from effeminacy and weakness, and my bounding blood beat quick and high alarms. A more voluptuous night I never enjoyed. Five times I was fairly lost in supreme rapture... Louisa had an exquisite mixture of delicacy and wantonness that made me enjoy her with more relish. Indeed I could not help roving in fancy to the embraces of some other ladies which my lively imagination strongly pictured. I don't know if that was altogether fair... I have painted this night as well as I could. The description is faint; but I surely may be styled a Man of Pleasure.' (12 January 1763) Indeed. Get hold of this book immediately.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool for Learning About Planned Giving.......2000-11-18

Many not-for-profit organizations do not have a Planned Giving Program. The basic reason for this is they feel it is too complicated to establish and maintain one. After reading this book they will think differently.

Legacies for Libraries: A Practical Guide to Planned Giving is the Bible for establishing an effective and successful program. Although the book was written for libraries the principles and concepts can be used for any industry. So don't let the title scare you away from buying it. This is a must read book.

The authors, Amy Smith and Matthew Lehrer, are experienced in the fund development process. However, they write the book in easy to understand language. You don't have to be a lawyer or scholar to understand what you are reading. In simple terms they explain the value of establishing a Planned Giving Program and then lay out the necessary steps for implementing such a program.

The book discusses the different types of Planned Giving gifts and give examples for each one. The authors have also put together an excellent appendix chocked full of valuable information. There is a list of Planned Giving resources, a glossary and bibliography.

When you finish reading Legacies for Libraries: A Practical Guide to Planned Giving you will be ready and willing to tap the $43 trillion in assets that demographers say that the World War II generation will be transferring to the next generation.

Don't lose out on this critical source of funding for your organization.

Vacation properties are not just for the elite and wealthy!

If you were a rich man… Stop right there! Just because you’re not rich doesn’t mean you don’t want a second home to get away from life as you know it. Whether you dream of living on the beach with sand between your toes or getting away from civilization in a mountain cabin, you don’t have to be a Rockefeller to enjoy your dream home.

In Profit From Your Vacation Home Dream: The Complete Guide to a Savvy Financial and Emotional Investment, vacation home buying expert Christine Hrib Karpinski shows you how to not only make your vacation home dream a reality, but to get others to pay your mortgage when you’re not enjoying your home away from home. By renting your vacation home using Karpinski’s recipe for successful vacation home ownership, you will soon be on the road to buying, enjoying and profiting from your second, third – and even fourth home.

Karpinski will show you how to: •Evaluate the different types of vacation properties and weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each. •Determine how many weeks you need to rent your home and how much you can charge to break even. •Become a master at managing real estate transactions –from negotiating the purchase price to maintaining the property – from the comfort of your hometown. •Determine if renting-by-owner or working with a property management company is right for you.

This book is as weak as the last book. Unfortunately, my wife bought both of her books without reading the reviews. Big mistake...
I read the book and it was basically a re-hash of her old book. It looks like she has quite a marketing arm behind her now though, as she is working for one of the big vacation rental websites now. Go figure. I guess they are making her publish the same junk, but with their spin on it. I also noticed that all of the super positive reviews for this book seem pretty fake and contrived. Watch out!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for first timers.......2007-07-29

Great read if you are thinking of buying or have just purchased a second home.

Having read Christine's first book "How to Rent Vacation Properties by Owner," I was pleased to find that she had written another. After reading the Amazon description, the author's bio and the acknowledgements in the front of the book, I was sure that it was a sequel to the first book. Amazon even has a co-marketing deal where you can buy both books.

I was greatly disappointed to find that most of the info in the book - down to the examples and quotes she uses - came straight out of the first book. Many of these were word-for-word. There's a few new ideas, but this really should have been marketed as a 2nd edition of "How to Rent Vacation Properties by Owner" than as her second book.

In fairness to Christine, I have to say that the content of the book is still great. I just wish it wasn't a near replica of the first!

I feel it is wrong to advertise these books like this so people can read up on them, enter into your rental property, use what's in these books to destroy your property, then call up zoning and building inspectors, to have them on there side, then you have to fix these problems at your expense. We just rented a brand new mobile home to a man, that had never been lived in, who has already destroyed this property, voided the warrenties, and is still there, due to people writing these books, and the laws protecting them, even though it's wrong.

This book was an excellent resource for someone who is a first time renter, like myself. It provided information that I would have never thought of without guidance from Sacks. I think it saved me by showing me the right questions to ask a landlord and also how to get results once I moved in. I learned important information and used the many checklists and worksheets to help me make the move from home to home smooth. I highly recommend this book to anyone with first time jitters or someone who thinks they may be a seasoned pro.

Franz Schubert is a singularly undocumented composer. Direct accounts of his life are scarce, incomplete, and contradictory; even the memoirs of his closest friends, mostly written long after his death, reflect the writers more than the subject. His own surviving letters and diaries are often poignant, but sparse; it is in his music that he truly revealed himself. No wonder he has been the victim of endless speculation and rumor, leaving his image encrusted in fantasy, sentimentality, and condescension. Numerous serious, conscientious biographies have attempted to rectify this. Christopher Gibbs's excellent, informative, generously illustrated new study is a welcome addition. Gibbs has written and lectured widely on Schubert; his style is lucid, scholarly but not pedantic, and except for a stiff, ponderous beginning, flows with natural ease.

Gibbs focuses on some relatively unexplored areas, notably Beethoven's profound influence on Schubert, both personal and musical, though they never met. He also demolishes several popularly held misconceptions, showing, for example, that Schubert took an active part in promoting his own career, enjoyed frequent successes, and lived to see his fame begin to grow. Gibbs demonstrates that Schubert was by no means a "natural," untutored composer who simply shook melodies out of his sleeve, and that it was not his untimely death that caused so many works to remain "unfinished." Some of these refutations have already been offered by previous writers, but are well worth repeating. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, in his splendid book On the Trail of the Schubert Songs, points out that Schubert's self-criticism often drove him to compose the same text several times, though unlike Beethoven he left no "sketchbooks that resemble battlefields." Hans Gál, in his Franz Schubert and the Essence of Melody (a beautiful book despite the clumsy title), suggests with a composer's empathetic insight that Schubert may have abandoned a work, like the C-major Piano Sonata, because he had modulated himself into a corner or hit a snag in the development, going on to something else while hoping for future inspiration.

Gibbs deserves special gratitude for attacking the credibility of the most recent Schubert scholarship, which claims to have uncovered evidence of heavy drinking, debauchery, and unbridled sensuality, both hetero- and homosexual, born and bred from Vienna's depraved climate, Schubert's hedonistic circle of friends, and his own allegedly immoral nature. These assertions reveal more about our own times and attitudes than about Schubert and his world. --Edith Eisler

                              Book Description

Franz Schubert's tragically short life was lived in one of Europe's most richly musical cities: a Vienna that worshipped Beethoven and where Rossini and Paganini drew crowds. Christopher Gibbs considers how and what Schubert composed, taking a fresh look at this misunderstood composer, particularly the unfolding of his professional career, his relationship to Beethoven, the growth of his reputation and public image and his darker side of drinking, depression and sexual ambiguity. This searching and sympathetic biography questions the customary sentimental clichés and the recent revisionist views concerning this elusive genius.

3 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introductory Biography of the Composer.......2005-03-16

This is an excellent and concise introductory biography of Schubert for the general reader. Gibbs debunks many of the Schubert myths that have arisen since his tragic early death, and explores Schubert's social mileu. Of primary importance in Schubert's life is his circle of male friends. In addition he tackles some of the recent research concerning the composer's possible homosexuality, and explores some of the rudimentary evidence that exists about Schubert's relationships with women. What is lacking in this book is more analysis of Schubert's oeuvre.

2 out of 5 stars equivocal, halting, and awkward.......2001-02-15

I'd cut this more slack if it were the only biography of Schubert ever written. Obviously it is not, so how does it distinguish itself from the others? It was more recently published, and that, I'm afraid, is it. It is always hedging, it wants desparately to offend nobody, and manages in this way to offend at least me.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing clarity to a misunderstood composer.......2000-11-02

Poor Schubert! The Viennese-born composer was little appreciated in his day, even by the circle of close friends who periodically sponsored programs of his songs and chamber music. Despite the fact that several of his friends were writers, none seem to have thought to record their memories of the composer until decades later. After his death at age 31, the composer was turned into a Romantic symbol, a sentimentalized ideal of the tragic genius who's life was cut short, etc. In more recent times, Schubert has been the subject of intense scholarly debates about issues like gender, which also want to idealize the composer (as gay icon). Christopher Gibbs acknowledges all these issues and provides a clearly written and frequently insightful study of the composer's life, without taking sides in any of the academic debates that have consistently misinterpreted his significance. For example, Gibbs notes that 19th century writers often said (selfishly) "Alas, we have been denied more glorious examples of Schubert's work." Instead, Gibbs suggests that the real loss was that Schubert died just before he gained the popularity his music deserved, and before he had the chance to clearly distinguish between mature works and juvenalia. You will gain a sense of Schubert as a real flesh-and-blood artist with desires and problems (he sometimes drank too much, it seems), rather than as a romanticized image of "doomed youth." A very welcome addition to the literature!

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, lyric baritone, was born in Berlin in 1925 and was one of this most important and widely acclaimed singers in the post-war era (was drafted in 1945, captured by the Americans in Italy and spent two years as a prisoner of war). He sang a great deal of opera in a huge range styles from Classic to Romantic to Wagner to opera of the Twentieth Century such as Berg and Britten. He was able to do all of this because of his great technique, natural vocal gifts, and keen intelligence. Above all, however, Fischer-Dieskau is remembered as a great singer of Lied, especially of Schubert. He actually sang all of Schubert's more than 600 songs in recital!

It is natural that a talent and a mind with such a close affinity to Schubert would also have studied the composer's life deeply enough to write a book such as this. It is a book with grace and charm that helps us understand Schubert's life on a very personal, even intimate (emotionally) basis. The author carefully connects the music with the life without the fatal mistake of the amateur of making the music biographical. We understand what was happening in Schubert's life, what he was writing at the time, and how that music involved those around him.

The musical detail never gets too technical, but only serves to illuminate the beauty and significance of the song and helps the reader understand its musical poetry and its illumination of the text. There are no musical examples or pictures, but plenty of excerpts of the texts of the songs so they may be discussed.

There is also a wonderful immediacy to the writing. We are taken to concerts, recitals, parties, and share in Schubert's triumphs and disappointments. We learn about his love and disappointment over Theresa Grob (who married a master-baker instead - so much more practical!). We never get bored or find the writing dry or dusty (which is pretty darn good for a translation!)

The last two chapters discuss what happened after Schubert's death, his legacy, and a short look at a number of interpreters of Schubert's lieder (songs) over the past hundred and fifty years or so. Again, this is more about flavor and illuminating the songs than an academic study of who sang what when and why.

If you want to have a pleasant experience with the songs of Schubert from an intelligent man who was one of the great performers of those songs, get yourself a copy of this book. Some are available on the used market at reasonable prices.

The author may not be especially inspired, but she's very readable, and she takes a straightforward approach to Schubert's life. She discusses the nature of Schubert's "sexual profligacy" and the possibility of his being homosexual without coming down on one side or the other. She believes that Schubert was manic-depressive (and that several other members of his family were as well), and advances some convincing evidence for her view. This is a worthwhile addition to the shelf of Schubert biographies, a shelf that is certain to continue to expand in the bicentenary year of his birth.

                              Book Description

In his short, tumultuous life, Franz Schubert (1797-1828) produced an astonishing amount of music. Symphonies, chamber music, opera, church music, and songs (more than 600 of them) poured forth in profusion. His "Trout" Quintet, his "Unfinished" Symphony, the last three piano sonatas, and
above all his song cycles Die Schone Mullerin and Winterreise have come to be universally regarded as belonging to the very greatest works of music? Who was the man who composed this amazing succession of masterpieces, so many of which were either entirely ignored or regarded as failures during his
lifetime? In this new biography, Elizabeth McKay paints a vivid portrait of Schubert and his world. She explores his family backround, his education and musical upbringing, his friendships, and his brushes and flirtations with the repressive authorities of Church and State. She discusses his
experience of the arts, literature, and theater, and his relations with the professional and amateur musical world of his day. She traces the way Schubert's manic-depression became an increasingly significant influence in his life, responsible at least in part for social inadequacies, professional
ineptitude, and idiosyncrasies in his music. And she examines Schubert's decline after he contracted syphilis, looking at its effect on his music and emotional life.

3 out of 5 stars For those who love Schubert..........2007-09-28

This biography covers the typical details of the composer's life from birth to death, albeit quite in-depth. The author chooses to rely on depression and syphilis as recurring themes tying this work together, while disagreeing with another scholarly article as to the date Schubert contracted syphilis. This volume was intended for the general interest reader (according to the preface), but is quite scholarly with numerous references on each page, and myriad names of acquaintances, family, and friends. One almost needs a supplemental guide to keep track of all the characters. The "select" bibliography is quite thorough, as are the two indexes on both musical works and general topics within the biography. The author is quite credible, however; she was granted honorary membership in the Schubert Institute, United Kingdom (SIUK) and previously wrote an authoritative book discussing Schubert's dramatic works
