5 out of 5 stars Puts money in the proper perspective........1997-08-04

The first six chapters of this book shows the true purpose of money. Very very few people cry out on their death bed that they should have worked more and earned more money. Why is that? These 6 chapters explain the TRUE PURPOSE of money. Don't wait until you're on your deathbed to find out! The remaining chapters assist you in working out your financial situation.

Ron Blue brings to light the burden of debt, inflation - good or bad?, why invest?, what should I invest in?, 4 criterion of when to go into debt (debt itself is not bad, but most of the time the REASON for going into debt is bad).

This book is the first book that explained to me not just WHAT I should do with my money, but WHY I should do it!

4 out of 5 stars a comic book sequel to "The Prisoner".......2007-07-17

A comic book 'sequel' to Patrick McGoohan's 1960's cult series "The Prisoner", released by DC Comics in the late 80's. The paperback collected edition is about 200 pages in length. Recommended to those already familiar with "The Prisoner"(in other words, newbcomers to the show might be a bit lost).

4 out of 5 stars Like the Series...you must Work At It........2007-01-31

I found this graphic novel challenging, and a bit dizzying in places. The plot IS hard to follow, even for people who loved the original series, because so little is explained, and so much shown (I guess with the authors' assumption you will automatically understand.) I can honestly say I actively studied the illustrations more than any book I own, but many questions remain. There are implications that the young girl (agent?) may be #6's daughter, as the book "Drake's Voyage" appears in the bookstore window. Fans of the series should notice how many times the Village "Bicycle", symbol of the danger of advancing technology without the morals to control it, appears over and over in the background of most of the comic panels, hidden in the shape of posters, lamps, and other items. Also obviously left out or poorly planned is the complete abandonment of the Village, with the Prisoner in it, after the hodge-podge of the Fallout episode. (Even if you accept the book's assertion that 6 cracked and retreated into madness at the end.)

Flawed? Yes. But it carries it off with such style, you are more than willing to attribute it's shortcomings to your own lack of insight. And isn't that how the Village would view you?

Be seeing you!

1 out of 5 stars Curses! What was the point?.......2003-02-27

I am a huge fan of The Prisoner TV series and go cuckoo for anything associated with it. I'm even keen on the so-so novels by Thomas Disch, but the DC Comics graphic novel "Shattered Visage", by Motter and Askwith, is an absolute mess.

The basic plot is interesting, in a nostalgic way, and if the authors would have gone deeper, maybe this story could have been salvaged. Focusing on a grim-and-gritty "post-Village" life for Nos. 2 and 6 sounds like an interesting read (especially No. 2's incarceration and subsequent book, and 6's breakdown). The problem is that you barely get to read about them at all. The focus is instead on bland new characters who are uncovering the existence and purpose of the Village, and 2 and 6 are secondary. Furthermore, it undoes some major points that were established in the series finale "Fall Out", and once they go messing with that, I don't get interested; just angry. So I guess that this book isn't meant for long-time fans of The Prisoner, because why would we want to read about the adventures of a bunch of nobodies uncovering (or undoing) what we already know?

The writers, however, try to reel the fans back in and impress us with their "clever" use of dialogue and scenery from the TV series, but this is another thing that makes the book so irritating. It's as if they picked their favorite blocks of dialogue from the show, and purposefully wrote the entire book around their incorporation. An occasional "be seeing you" would be fine, but Motter & Askwith use SO MUCH dialogue from the TV series that I challenge their claim to be the writers of this book.

Let's not forget the art: horrific pencil scratches that benefit little from the inking, and flat washed-out colors that make deciphering the panels a chore. Also, would it have hurt to include some backgrounds in the panels? Overall, the art has no detail or depth and makes this a visually boring tale. My advice is, watch the TV series, revel in its greatness, and skip this book.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating story from an even better concept..........2002-12-08

I had never seen The Prisoner prior to picking up this graphic novel, but this book was intriquing enough and so well written it lead me into collecting the episodes of the TV show.

The art is a bit of an acquired taste (particularly the coloring), but the story riffs on some of the same themes and ideas that made the original such a cult favorite, while bringing it into modern times.

Some reviewers have complained about it not making any sense, or being obtuse, but I disagree. Like anything worthwhile, it takes a bit of effort, and if you only try to passively "be entertained" you may not get everything out of it.

Overall, solid story work by Motter with art that grows on you. A worthy "sequel" to the TV series.

2 out of 5 stars For the Prisoner Completist Only.......2002-02-27

Probably the closest we'll ever get to a Prisoner sequel, SHATTERED VISAGE is all the more disappointing as it could have explored literally any storyline and expanded on any character, yet did so very little.

A revisitation of the Village and Numbers Six and Two (appearing in the favorite Leo McKern incarnation), SHATTERED VISAGE is likely to leave the casual fan entirely befuddled and even the hardcore enthusiast scratching their head. As obtuse as the final series episode, FALL OUT, and poorly illustrated, SHATTERED VISAGE satisfies only in that it faithfully maintains the clever wordplay of the series in its dialogue, but this is little compensation for the lack of a cohesive story.

Many Prisoner fans enjoy the mystery of the series' finale, forever exploring possible meanings behind its intriguing images, but a successful sequel must answer at least some existing questions before asking others. Therefore, SHATTERED VISAGE fails in nearly every department. Only the most devoted completist need bother - and even then, this title is likely to simply take up space on your shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference tool........2006-08-16

This is another great A&P reference book that I had to add to my collection. It's well written so you don't need a degree to understand it. Each body system is covered very well with the main points explained in depth. The diagrams are excellent and plentiful. I would certainly recommend this book to any A&P student. It's inexpensive enough and extremely useful that you can add it to your collection without it collecting dust

5 out of 5 stars The best quality/price reference for non-professionals.......1999-07-23

This book is intended for non-medical professionals, and thusdoes not explain things in much detail or depth. However, it explainsenough for the people who are interested in health and human physiology. One of the strength of this book is that the author tries to explain how things work in human body. This isn't just the atlas like other atlas books where authors simply list lots of terminologies of the parts with the figures (only with few explanations). Especially, I liked the way the author explains about how hormone system works. One might wonder the quality of the pictures (or the book overall) would be any good considering the price of this book, and I can say that this is a quality book. This book is published in 1999, so I guess that at least it has the most updated information regarding human body. I can hardly think of any other book that can surpass the quality/price ration that this book offers. There is another book that is complementary to this book: Atlas of the Human Body, by Takeo Takahashi. Some pictures are better in Takahashi's book (actually, many figures are better). But this book is more expensive and published in 1995. If you need only one "Know Your Body" will be the one to choose, because it has more explanations of "why/how". In my case, I bought both. Note that these books may not be intended for medical professionals, they are detailed enough to get you bored unless you are really interested in human body, health, and physiology. So, be prepared. It is like a text book reading.

Trevor Hooper of Raku Restaurant in Vancouver, B.C., shows how to add Japanese izakaya to the Spanish tapas, Mediterranean mezze, and Chinese dim sum already in your repertoire of small dishes from around the world. In Japan, izakaya are served at pub-type drinking halls. Hooper creates his own wildly eclectic versions, using a fusion of European and Asian techniques and ingredients, along with spot prawns, salmon jerky, and other uniquely local items from the Pacific Northwest.

Recipes are grouped by the four seasons and presented in sections titled "Looking East" and "Looking West." Orange-Spice Lamb Shanks, Asparagus with Mustard Butter, and herbed new potatoes steamed in butter and garlic found in the "Looking West" sections require ingredients stocked at most local supermarkets, but Asian ingredients are needed for many of the Eastern-style dishes, from fresh Chinese vegetables to tamarind paste, mirin (Japanese sweet cooking wine), and other staples. The sushi section focuses on maki, rolled sushi. Many use cooked ingredients in the filling, as in the Chicken Satay Sushi Roll.

Luckily as a one time professional cook my imagination can fill in the blanks. For others this could be a reason not to purchase this book. It has lots of exciting & different ideas. It would be great to see what the author & chef came up with from a presentation perspective to compliment these recipes. It's a wonderful book and I hope the lack of visuals won't deter the more adventurous out there..

On the cover of this wonderful cookbook of recipes from Trevor Hooper's Raku Restaurant are the words "A Nibbler's Delight of Fusion Cooking". I'm an old fashioned cook so I don't know about fusion in cooking, I always thought that had something to do with Neutron bombs or unlimited energy for free, but I do know good cooking. And let me tell you, you will not be disappointed in anything this book has to offer.

Last night I did up the Yucatan Salmon with Tomatillo Sauce on page 69 and I have to tell you, this is a dish that had my mama drooling, and she is the queen of Mexican cooking. Oh yeah, it's hard for her to admit that lil old Katie can match her when it comes to serving up a mouth watering dish, but I did it last night and you can impress your mama or mama-in-law or the best man in your life if you get this book and serve up some of the Nibbler's Delights found inside.

I am very fond of appetizers or small portion of food before the meal. While I was in Spain, I had the opportunity to sample some tapas, that's why I wonder about this book on asian tapas. So I bought the book and sample some of the recipes. My comment on the recipes is excelent, no wonder some of their (Raku restaurant) customer keep coming even from the other part of the world. BTW, this book is the recipes of the Raku restaurant in Vancouver. And even if the book mention Asian, some of the recipes originated in non asian countries like Berebere from Ethiopia or confit of duck from France.

The analysis of the mortgage market is a specialised field but examines a financial market with extremely wide-ranging implications; it affects the stability of the whole economy. The key thing about this analysis is the increasing importance of the secondary mortgage market - which in the US is now several times larger than the market for government debt. The UK secondary mortgage market is also growing and the book will provide a timely resource to those active and interested in this important financial market. The 1990s saw an enormous growth of mortgage market analysis as an academic subject and there is a vast literature scattered among the key real estate journals. There is now a great need to not only bring this very complex subject area together, but also to abstract the main issues and to render them intelligible. The book will provide an organised research resource and also inform and motivate further research into the microeconomics of mortgage markets.

This grand collection of paintings by the accomplished historical artist Mort Kunstler makes the past come alive on canvas. Generals Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee appear in most of the paintings, but not all of them. Union colonel Joshua Chamberlain's glorious charge down Little Round Top on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg is included, for example, as are portraits of General Ulysses S. Grant and others. What's more, Jackson & Lee isn't just a picture book, although it would be a worthwhile investment for that element alone. The text, written by acclaimed Jackson biographer James I. Robertson Jr., provides an interesting narrative about Jackson and Lee and their relationship.

                  Book Description

This spectacular collection of seventy-nine works of art by America's premier historical artist is a stunning visual portrait of the two legendary Civil War Confederate generals. Text is by an acclaimed historian.

I have read and "studied" several of Mr.Kunstler's books and enjoyed them all.I particularly enjoy the artists comments as to why he does some of the things the way he does. This book is different in that his art is not accompanied by his explanations but by another writer's text. This text is very good and really brings out the personalities of these great characters. As one who believes that it is important to understand the personalities of the people involved if one is to understand why things happened the way they did;this is very well done.
As to the title of my review;I find eyes fascinating. The first thing I look at in Mr.Kunstler's paintings is the eyes.Let me point out Confederate Sunset on pg.56 both Lee's and Jackson's eyes are very beady and staring resulting in them looking like figures in a wax museum;giving the painting a posed and unnatural feeling.Other examples are of Jackson on pages 38and 40.Note the difference in Jackson's eyes on page44.Another thing I like to study is how some paintings look very stiff, posed almost like a diorama in a museum,eg.The Return of Stuart on pg.126.Compare this to The Last Council on pg.102 which is so realistic. Am I alone in seeing this aspect of Mr.Kunstler's work?

Outstanding compilation of information, and the best images of primiere Civil War artist Mort Kunstler. A "must have" for all serious students of the American Civil War.

                          Book Description

Adapting dialogues and presentations from the National Civic League's 103rd National Conference on Governance, this issue examines the critical role of philanthropy in building community. Areas discussed include strategic grant making, the role of foundations in influencing public policy, foundation initiatives and the dialogue on race, challenges posed by devolution and welfare reform, and the role of community foundations and regional associations of grant makers as successful models.

Articles explore these themes in further detail through an examination of the importance, often overlooked, of the civic sector in national policy debates; professional obstacles within academia that may be discouraging potentially beneficial partnerships between the civic sector and universities and institutions; and the growing need for foundations and local government to provide effective and comprehensive support to grassroots community organizations.

Also, in a special focus section on Civic Infrastructure, contributors argue that the mission of civic society to produce three types of capital--market, public, and social--opens up new possibilities for reconceptualizing the social contract and the kind of education we give our young people. They also explore "study circles" as a new tool for encouraging effective and lasting opportunities for civic engagement.

4 out of 5 stars before you write the check.............2006-08-18

This small book is a builders check list w/ side notes and clarifications. Very simple and to the point. I have seen similar texts in the log home magazines, but for an all in one place reference its pretty good. This manual tells you how to HAVE SOMEONE ELSE BUILD YOUR HOME, it gives ZERO technical info. Its all about costs, estimates, contractors, sourceing ect...and the tricks and info needed to construct and save money on your project. Many explanations on what is standard, what is an extra. What you will pay extra for what should be included in most situations.I cant see paying the $17.95 cover price, but at less than $10 used its worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Good for what it is.......2006-08-05

For what it is, this is a good book. It is NOT a prescription for how to build a low-cost log home. Neither does it cover everything you need to know to be your own general contractor. It is a good overview of the steps that go into building a log home including several suggestions for saving money (or getting more for the same money) at every step of the way. And it's a quick read. I read it in one weekend. If you are early in the process of designing a log home this is a good book to start with once you are ready to leave the dream world to take a more realistic look at what is involved - particularly if you are considering being your own general contractor or you just want to know what your general contractor will need to do.

5 out of 5 stars How To Afford Your Own Log Home.......2002-03-12

this book was an excellent reference for us in our search for a log home and gave great information on what was necessary to get the job done! give it a try if you have always wanted rustic living at its best!

2 out of 5 stars The title is misleading........2000-04-03

Instead of "How to Afford," the title should be "How to Build." The book offers suggested contracts for construction, price and fee contracts, a materials description sheet, certificate of insurance, etc. It is very thorough in what the log home builder will need to do it themselves, but since I'm not a do-it-yourselfer it really wasn't what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars One of the 2 best books ever written .......2005-05-12

Reading is the most boring human activity there is... unless it comes to reading certain books, those actually being the only objects that should be called "books"as opposed to the rest which are just printed paper sheets. Writing a real "book" takes the best there is in humankind and the authors were lucky enough to have it all during the writting of this book.

3 out of 5 stars Recommended on official Hopi website.......2004-03-30

I haven't read this book yet, but wanted people to know the Hopi themselves recommend it. See this website: www.hopi.nsn.us/Pages/Read%20List/readlist.html.

1 out of 5 stars One star is being very generous!!!!!!!!.......2003-05-06

If I were to pick a more accurate rating I would make it a -2. This is book is very thorough and detailed to the point of boredom. It should have about 160 pages instead of 380.

If you are into this topic then you would love it. But as for me I had to force myself to read 5 pages in a setting. The only reason I read it was because I had to write a paper on it.

                              5 out of 5 stars Insight into turn-of-the-century Hopi.......2002-03-07

I enjoyed this book so much that I finished it in a couple of days. In my opinion, Don Talayesva is a charming narrator. His sometimes humorous, many times heart-breaking recollections underscores the tremendous cultural, social and religious upheavals the Hopi tribe were going through at the beginning of the 20th century, as no anthropological or historical work could ever do.

1 out of 5 stars Sun Chief Review.......2002-01-07

This book is incredibly uninteresting and poorly written. The writing style doesn't flow well, and there is no particular plot to speak of. I wouldn't recommend it.
