The Life and Times of J. Neville Keynes: A Beacon in the Tempest
Phyllis Deane Manufacturer: Edward Elgar Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1840645342 |
Book Description
`I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book . . . It contains a balanced and informative account of the life and family background of a key figure in the development of Cambridge, the author of what is, by common consent, a classic on economic methodology, and the father of the most influential economist of the twentieth century (and of a world famous surgeon for good measure).'- D.P. O'Brien, University of Durham, UK
This fascinating biography of an economist who was also a logician and administrator, is based mainly upon his virtually continuous diary. The diary provides an intimate commentary on the academic developments and conflicts in which he was closely involved as well as on his life as undergraduate, bachelor and family man.
It is the insight into J. Neville Keynes's personality, as well as his moral integrity as a diarist, which gives this book a particularly illuminating perspective from which to view the social and educational revolution that transformed Cambridge University during the last quarter of the nineteenth and the first quarter of the twentieth century. The Life and Times of J. Neville Keynes faithfully records the shifts in, and debates on, the educational, constitutional and financial context within which the academic revolution gradually and often stormily developed and in which J. Neville Keynes played such a vital and integral part.

Manufacturer: Jossey-Bass ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0787942685 |

They outline a number of professional development strategies for women in fundraising; examine the current status of women in fundraising as measured by compensation rates and organizational position; and analyze the impact of women's changing socioeconomic role on the organizational structures and policies of traditional fundraising institutions, such as religious organizations and the YWCA.

Book Description
The violin master class of Jascha Heifetz was a fascinating mix of nationalities, personalities, and temperaments. Mr. Heifetz, the artist, the teacher, and the man, shared with his students a tradition which he was largely responsible for creating. For eleven years, I was privileged to be among the elite few who were welcomed into his inner circle, and discovered what the outside world longed to know about him.

Sherry allows us to see the care her teacher had not only in his work, for which he gave everything, but the concern he had for the welfare of his students. He was a very generous person in all respects.
I laughed out loud at several passages. The imagry of the fun loving, full of life young violinst, meeting the formal, reserve of the great artist. You must read it, and enjoy it as much as I did!
The pictures are also an additional treat.

Heifetz As I Knew Him
Ayke Agus Manufacturer: Amadeus Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

Amazon.com
As often happens with biographies written from a personal point of view, this book tells us more about the author than the subject. Ayke Agus was born in strife-torn Indonesia, the oldest child in a large, authoritarian, repressive family. Musically very gifted, she studied both violin and piano and was exhibited from an early age as her country's most promising violin prodigy. Her mother was a great admirer of Jascha Heifetz; little Ayke grew up listening to his records and made him her musical and personal idol. She escaped her restrictive life by going to America to study, and eventually entered Heifetz's master class at the University of Southern California. He quickly pressed her into service as class pianist; soon, she became his personal accompanist and increasingly indispensable companion. This is the story of their symbiotic love-hate relationship, which lasted until his death 15 years later. During that time, she found out that her idol had feet of clay and never forgave him for it.There is a certain fascination in discovering the weaknesses and foibles of famous people. Yet this portrait of the great Jascha Heifetz is not really a "warts and all" account, but rather one that's "all warts." It depicts him as demanding, controlling, manipulative, tyrannical, sadistic, inflexible, narrow-minded, suspicious, reclusive, and, as his health declined, increasingly erratic, unpredictable, and irrational. When Agus met him, he had already retired from the stage, but still played chamber music privately with friends and students, and he did not stop playing for himself until almost the end. He poured a lot of energy into his master class. According to Agus's sometimes enlightening, sometimes primitive description, Heifetz's manner of teaching--he had no method--was intensely concentrated, but unremittingly, often unrealistically, demanding and despotic, pedagogically and personally.
But it's his relationship with the author herself that naturally takes center stage. Heifetz very soon added musical and domestic duties to her services until Agus spent virtually all her time at his beck and call, finally doing everything for him, even after she got married and became a mother, from running his household to administering his eye drops. She claims it was entirely due to her coaxing and assistance that he resumed work on his unfinished transcriptions. In return, he taught her a lot about making, performing, and arranging music. They exchanged stories about their lives, and she felt a bond in their both having grown up as prodigies (to whom he developed a lifelong aversion). Agus concludes that, like her, Heifetz was exploited by his parents, but unlike her, he was spoiled as well, and she speculates that this made him "a superannuated, insecure, and immature child," unable to form lasting relationships, craving but alienating friends. She discreetly avoids discussing his marital and family life. Not surprisingly, the sections about herself are written with the most natural immediacy; elsewhere, her style is often clumsy, with forced American colloquialisms, shallow pseudo-philosophical reflections, and pseudo-psychological analyses. There is a note of condescension, almost of contempt, in the way she portrays her tarnished idol, while underlining her own self-sacrificing loyalty, which she calls "putting up with him."
As he got older, Heifetz became profoundly depressive. He underwent a serious shoulder operation and suffered many increasingly dangerous falls. An intensely private person, he lived alone even when his health was failing, and Ayke Agus apparently took it upon herself to cope with all his problems. The reader wonders: should she not have informed his children of his condition before the final crisis? And why did she stay with him when his demands became ever more unreasonable, his behavior more abusive? She says she was held captive by her early, incurable hero-worship of the man and the artist, and by the music they made together. Yet her account reads like an act of catharsis, if not revenge. --Edith Eisler
Book Description
For the last 15 years of Jascha Heifetz's life, Ayke Agus was his closest companion. She came to him as a violin student in his master class at the University of Southern California, but he singled her out when he heard her play the piano. She became his private accompanist and ultimately his assistant and confidante. A sensitive and astute observer, Agus takes up where previous biographers left off; her book is a loving yet unblinking portrait of an aging master by his disciple.Customer Reviews:

A flawed, incomplete biography of the great violinist.......2004-06-22
Heifetz gave his own biography as follows: "Born in Russia, first lesson at three, debut at seven, debut in America at seventeen. That's all there really is." He was a Russian Jew whose father was a violinist evidently determined to turn his son into a great virtuoso. Heifetz became a celebrated child prodigy in Russia. He and his family emigrated to the United States in 1917 at the time of the Russian Revolution, and he played a famous, career-launching Carnegie Hall recital in 1917, also the year of his earliest recordings. He became an American citizen, making his home first in New York City and later in Los Angeles, and continued to concertize and record until 1972, adding teaching to his activities in his later years.
Despite his enormous international fame (RCA Victor billed him as "The Violinist of the Century"), Heifetz was regarded by his detractors as a cold performer, a faultless but soulless virtuoso who played with chilly technical correctness, who took almost everything at a faster tempo than other violinists, and who declined to "emote" during his performances, preferring to play with an impassive expression, the Great Stone Face among violinists. He was a reserved, difficult man, a legendary perfectionist and what today would be called a "control freak." He had two failed marriages and troubled relationships with his three children, and as he grew older it seems evident that he was increasingly hard to get along with.
Weschler-Vered's book is strongest on the early years and the late years of Heifetz's life, but there are serious lacunae in the middle years, extensive periods of time in Heifetz's prime during which he has little or nothing to report. Unfortunately these are the very years we would most like to have a full account of. Occasionally W-V seems to lose focus, as when he digresses at such length about Heifetz's teacher Auer (and other teachers Heifetz had nothing to do with) that the biography threatens to derail. Since Heifetz made the work of any biographer difficult, it is perhaps not surprising that there is considerable guesswork and speculation here. But this gets out of hand in the chapter ominously entitled "Personally Speaking: Mystery," which attempts to penetrate "the impenetrable mask behind the poker face" of the famous violinist by means of none-too-convincing amateur psychologizing and psychological speculation. The author also occasionally gets his facts wrong. For example, he states categorically that Heifetz appeared in only one movie, They Shall Have Music (1938). But in fact he appeared in a second one, Carnegie Hall (1947), unknown to W-V. W-V also doesn't seem to grasp that USC (the University of Southern California) and UCLA (the University of California at Los Angeles), with both of which Heifetz became associated in his later years as a pedagogue, are two distinct and separate universities.
W-V is a Romanian Jew, educated in Israel, who writes awkwardly in English. His prose is wordy, graceless, sometimes unidiomatic, and occasionally ungrammatical; he sometimes chooses what is manifestly the wrong word, and doesn't understand English punctuation well. He is a writer who needed a good editor, but he didn't get one, because this book is full of annoying errors that a good editor would have corrected, and shows evidence of never having been proofread (errors in grammar and punctuation, proper names misspelled, etc.). A sloppy job of preparation for publication by Schirmer Books, the music division of Macmillan, and publisher of many distinguished books on music.
On the other hand W-V is an amateur violinist, and this gives him an advantage in describing the technique and mechanics of Heifetz's playing. It should be noted that his attitude toward Heifetz as a violinist is reverential and dismissive of criticism.
The biography per se is 202 pages in length. The book also includes a useful, comprehensive discography (by Julian Futter, 25 pages) listing all Heifetz's many approved commercial recordings (1917-1972) (no attempt is made to list "pirates" or "off-the-air" issues), two sections of photographs illustrating the violinist's life from childhood to his last concerts, a bibliography, notes, and an index.
In sum, this is far from an ideal biography of Heifetz, but for now it may be the best of a disappointing lot. Its few competitors all have problems, including a couple of personal memoirs by Heifetz students who knew him only in his last years and which have a self-serving component. For a Heifetz buff this book is worth owning for the discography alone. But let's hope that some day soon the great violinist will get the first-rate biography he deserves.

Are the Trees in Bloom over There: Thoughts and Memories of Two Brothers
Menahem Meir , Menachem Mayer , and Frederick Raymes Manufacturer: Yad Vashem Pubns ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 9653081594 |
Book Description
Two young brothers born in Germany were deported with their family to France and held in a detention camp. Their parents were transferred to Rivesaltes. Two years later they were sent to Drancy and from there they were deported to their final destination - Auschwitz. Meanwhile the two brothers were rescued from the detention camp by the OSE (a Jewish organization) and the Quakers. They were shuffled between orphanages in France and Switzerland. Eventually they were separated. After the war Fred, the older brother, made his way to the United States, where he became a rocket scientist. His work brought him in contact with Werner von Braun. The younger brother, Menachem, came to Israel, where he took part in Israel's wars. He raised a family and devoted himself to a career in education. For many years there was almost no contact between the brothers, but recently they felt a need to talk about their experiences, especially with their grandchildren. They renewed their connection with each other and together they wrote the gripping story of their childhood.
This is one of the most touching memoirs to come to light in recent years. The unusual narrative style, the conversations between the brothers as they attempt to bridge the missing years, their appeal to their grandchildren and in fact to all our grandchildren, cannot fail to move the reader.
