Retirement planning made readable.......2000-11-08

In a user-friendly and down-to-earth manner, R.D. Bly flawlessly purveys the ingenuity necessary to master compound interest. Considering the shaky ground on which social security currently kneels, understanding the difference between an IRA and a 401k is the 411 we need to keep our heads above water, and Money While You Sleep is a smart, effective start. To read this book by the age of 20 is to be 40 steps ahead of the game. Every year you lose a little ground. What are you waiting for?!

Moving Into Silliness.......2007-03-20

Torah Yoga tries to weave together overly simplified, and uselessly simplistic, ideas from Jewish mysticism with hatha yoga practice and philosophy. The result reads like those affirmations Al Franken used to do on SNL. Yes, you may be a spark of God's infinite light, and that may lead to a warm and fuzzy feeling, but it won't deepen your understanding of Kabbalah or improve your downward-facing-dog. In my admittedly limited understanding, both Kabbalah and yoga philosophy are demanding and intricate doctrines. They deserve careful study. This book, though well-intentioned, infantilizes both topics.

If you want a book to enhance your yoga practice, there are many, many titles that far surpass this. I'm sure the same is true if you want to grapple with the rigors of Hinduism or Jewish mysticism.

Superb hatha yoga books that are gentle and user-friendly include Donna Farhi's "Yoga Mind, Body and Spirit," and Erich Schiffman's "Moving Into Stillness." I'd spend the money on either one rather than this.

Torah Yoga.......2007-03-12

This book blends two very different belief systems. I enjoy the commentary and also the link to Yoga poses. I am an "old" Torah studnet but new to Yoga. This is really a beneficial approach for me.

Life Journey.......2004-06-09

Diane offers several suggestions for how to read her book, Torah Yoga. My choice has been to read and reread the introduction. I love Diane's emphasis on first things: the word, the breath, attending to the foundation before moving into postures and finding the origins of our life journeys.
As a midwife, I work with women and families embarking on the life journey of pregnancy. Today in the U.S., alot of technology is available to evaluate the status of pregnancy. As a guide for pregnant women, I try to encourage them to trust their own intuition and the strength of their own bodies. Diane has given me the tools to promote this concept with women.
I've had the privilege to take Torah Yoga classes with Diane, I can hear her voice when I read the explanation of postures in her book. The directions are easy to follow. Perhaps I only want to read the introduction because I don't want to come to the end of the book. But the book is a guide to a journey. Diane has given me and everyone else who reads her book the encouragement we need to become our own guides.

A beautifully written and interesting book..........2004-06-02

Raised as a Presbyterian, a competitive swimmer, and a mathematician (order not important), I am not naturally drawn either to spiritual mysticism or yoga. This beautifully written and interesting book, however, has helped me to understand how one could be drawn to those things. My thanks to the author, who obviously cares very deeply about her subject.

A tomato delicacy... of a book!.......2002-08-01

I had a student working on a report (actually it was his mother doing the inquiring, he was contemplating "other things") VEGETABLES.
The last part of the project that was being worked-on was for a recipe. His topic was carrots. I hate to tell you what transpired during the
recipe search, but he did not like carrot cake. The mother insisted that he did not need make it. He did not care whether he had to make
it or not, he sure did not want her to include that recipe!
I wound-up ordering the attached list of books. They came into the library a week ago. What a great little series. Do take the time to
peruse Amazon. They are a real "repast!"

a good read, much information. Mr Goldberg offers reviews of the day and the reviewers were really harsh at times. With all the bad press the group got I wondered how they stayed popular for so long. Nothing changes. Reviewers review and fans enjoy. The book is an easy read, broken down by year, detailing Egos clashing, members coming and going, It wasn't all peaches and cream. Contains a very fine discography. Glad to have it on my book shelf. This is trusted reference material.

A detailed history, not only of a group, but of an era........1999-04-19

More Than Words Can Say is exactly that--more than the Inkspots, more than the music. Marv Goldberg, a musicologist without parallel, has written not only a complete biography of the Inkspots, from the various embryonic stages of the individual members to the demises of both the career and the members themselves, but also a history of the music business--union control, imitator groups, even the incipience of group harmony acappella recordings (read to find out how union control caused that to happen!.) The format of the book is unique; the Inkspots' music is a backdrop for events which were happening in the world at the time. Indeed, Mr. Goldberg's concept of the book's format followed one that one of the Inkspots had himself suggested--of taking newsreels of historical events, the while playing the Inkspots' recordings from that particular year in the background.

This book is definitely a five-star--and you can dance to it, too!

fairly factual, good photos & news accounts.......1999-04-18

Being somewhat of an authority on the group, I find some claims that are not accurate. Early history & photos are superb, & are mainly due to Mr. Goldberg's friendship with Jerry Daniels. Would have liked more credits listed to the donors, for some items are one of a kind.

"More Than Words Can Say" from the opening line of one of the SWEETEST Ballads ever recorded. "If I Didn't Care" 1939 Decca Records, by The FABULOUS Ink Spots. From the streets of Indianapolis, Indiana and Coffee Pot Bands through their Glorious RecordingCareer. This book covers the origination of the Ink Spots in 1932 up to 1953 and their disbanding. What a road that was. Filled with all the trials and triumphs one could possibly expect. The group endured and we are lucky for it. What wonderful recordings were put on wax by this FANTASTIC VOCAL GROUP. The author, Marv Goldberg, places you right in with the Ink Spots. You feel you are living the legend as he relates it. Starting with the beginnings as street corner and shoe shine stand entertainers, you see how these individuals melded together to become one of the best pioneer vocal groups to have ever recorded. If not for the Ink Spots and groups like theirs,Vocal Group Harmony of the later 50's & 60's might not have ever been. We owe a lot to these gentlemen. The Ink Spots are the personification of Class. This book is only 300 pages. It read so very fast I was looking for more and more. I'm sure you will agree. Thank You Marv!!! The definitive book about The Ink Spots and their music........1998-12-03

The only book (that I am aware of) about The Ink Spots that is currently available. It covers the original members of The Ink Spots from prior to the formation of this vocal group through the early 1950s when Bill Kenny left them. The book is crammed with facts, anecdotes, dozens of rare photos and a complete discography. It is in a well organized format which makes reading it a pleasure.

I highly recommend this book.

To make the Gospel message easier to understand, especially to the younger generation, Wilhelm Baum uses many visual and often astounding illustrations, including not only many Japanese language symbols, but utilizing their necktie designs as will as even Japanese chopsticks.
