Most tax guides these days are hundreds of pages long, resemble telephone books, and require two arms to carry. And unless you're an accountant, you probably need to refer only to a handful of pages to complete your return--and even then, you might feel like you've missed something. Which is probably what the Motley Fool realized when they put together The Motley Fool Investment Tax Guide. This guide is designed to do one thing--help investors get through the tax year. Written by Fools Selena Maranjian and Roy Lewis, this slim volume covers subjects such as the best time to sell stocks and other investments; how to make sense of mutual-fund distributions; when you should pay estimated taxes; and evaluating whether to opt for the traditional or Roth IRA. This book should complement any overall investment strategy and is a worthwhile read for every investor--and not just on April 14. --Harry C. Edwards

Book Description

Taxes are not just something to be considered in early April. This easy-to-follow guide, brought to you from the creators of the best-known personal investment site on the Internet, is filled with sound advice on minimizing taxes.

3 out of 5 stars Great for the tax novice, or beginner.......1999-05-14

I was a great introductory to the basic tax issues to investors. It gives several tips that pay off immeadiately, and opens doors to things to consider and read further upon. It was a quick read, and easy to understand. A good followup, book is the 'Ernst & Young Tax Saver's Guide'.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful, Easy to Understand and Charmingly Written.......1999-03-04

As someone who began investing four years ago and began doing my own taxes just one year ago, I found this tax guide to be extremely informative. It is a quick and enjoyable read - perhaps an unsurpassed feat for a tax guide - with lots of helpful examples. This tax guide provided great tips for dealing with my taxes this year (i.e., what to do with that one worthless security) as well as numerous ideas for how to plan my investment strategies in the future. It also contained the most understandable explanation of the New Roth IRA that I have read this year. I highly recommend this tax guide to anyone who invests. I certainly feel more confident about preparing this year's tax return. Indeed, in a strange way I am almost looking forward to doing my taxes now.

2 out of 5 stars I know the Fool tries to simplify things, but . . ........1999-02-18

this is probably too simplified. I foolishly (note the lower case "f") assumed this book would be as great as the Fool's other publications, and never checked, say, the amount of pages the book has (the deal was too good . . .). I was a bit disappointed when all I got in the mail was a mere pamphlet. The IRS website is actually more helpful.

Still, the book is an ok start to considering investment tax strategies, and will make the unknowing reader knowing enough to tackle more hefty guides.

5 out of 5 stars Most readable tax book.......1999-02-14

I had never done our taxes. But after reading this most simple and informative book, I am going to try my hand at doing our taxes. I am a 66-year-old woman, and not good at these things. But I shall try this year. This book explained a lot of things for me, so now I'm more confident. (It was entertaining, too!)

1 out of 5 stars Lightweight and highly biased.......1999-02-13

I was looking for a meaty tax guide and should have known better than to buy a 94 page book! The authors spend most of the book bashing mutual funds and praising stock picking while using twisted and contorted logic to brainwash the reader. Tax decisions are rarely simply but these authors seem to think they are.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book on mutual fund principles.......1998-07-16

I recommend this book strongly to all those who are starting out as mutual fund investors. It provides a clear analysis of the issues and tradeoffs involved in mutual fund investing and explains all the relevant concepts and terminology. It also teaches a fundamental tenet of investing - "set a limit on your greed"!!

5 out of 5 stars Great book to make the jump from just saving to investing........1997-03-12

This book assumes a basic knowledge of mutual funds but goes into the nuances you need to really ferret out the winning funds and also helps you put together a great portfolio based on your timeframes. I would have given it a 10 but it was hard to use as a reference after reading it through since the important information was sprinkled throughout the chapters and appendices. It was long enough to have the pertinent information you need but short enough to be able to read through it in a few evenings.

I'm not super interested in tax law, and after this book was even less enchanted by the idea. However, the book did a good job of presenting the tax code, and the class wasn't bad either. I just hope we go to a flat tax.

                Book Description

The book explores comparatively the role of non-profit organizations in conditions of social and economic change. The focus is an investigation of the proposition that non-profit organizations provide sites and processes for enhancing active citizenship, invigorating the public sphere and extending political participation. This is the first national study of the third-sector in Australia, but its conclusions have a general relevance to deregulated welfare societies in Europe and North America.

                  Book Description

John F. Kennedy challenged America to enter and win "the space race," Nixon ushered in the era of the space shuttle "work horse," and Reagan urged us to "reach for the stars." In this study of space exploration from a metaphorical perspective, Linda T. Krug focuses on presidential rhetoric and the ways in which metaphors influence public understanding and opinion of the U.S. space program. After the era of the man on the moon, why did people no longer flock to see a space launch? Why did legislative support for the space program become so difficult to procure? Why were NASA officials willing to compromise their ethics and beliefs to make a launch happen? Krug raises these questions and argues that the answers, to some extent, lie in the metaphorical shadows our presidents have cast over the space program. Beginning with a discussion of the significance of metaphor, this study offers a comprehensive "space chronology" highlighting space program events and presidential responses, from Eisenhower unveiling his "plan" to Bush "taking us to tomorrow." Krug proposes that once U.S. astronauts walked on the moon, thus winning "the race," the nation was unable to find another equally compelling way of looking at space exploration. She suggests that only when presidents learn to combine visions of "space exploration" with "space use" will a sound space program once again exist. With a focus on the dynamic motivating power of metaphorical images, this unique investigation of space exploration rhetoric will interest space enthusiasts, as well as those who study rhetorical criticism, political communication, political science, and space programs.

                            Product Description

Claire Seymour examines ways in which Britten's operas explored and articulated the inherent ambiguity and latent sexuality of music, particularly song, and suggests that they may illustrate his search for a public 'voice' which would embody, communicate, and perhaps resolve his private beliefs and anxieties. She demonstrates how the delicate balance between private and public communication, and the tension between art as self-expression and art as moral resolution were key concerns in Britten's music.
Analyses of Britten's operas from Paul Bunyan to Death in Venice, the three Church Parables, and several of the 'children's operas' offer evidence that, for Britten, opera was the natural medium through which to explore, express and, paradoxically, repress his private concerns.

                                      Book Description

Billy Budd, based on Herman Melville's nautical allegory, is one of Britten's most challenging operas. This comprehensive guide considers the work from both literary and musical viewpoints. Melville's novella is discussed, as is the interpretation given to the novella by the librettists E. M. Forster and Eric Crozier. A detailed synopsis guides the reader through the musical and dramatic action of the opera and in a chapter devoted to the music, Britten's distinctive technique of tonal symbolism is analyzed to demonstrate the effectiveness of his musical response to the dramatic suggestions of Melville's story. The most important critical writings on Billy Budd are represented by an expanded version of Donald Mitchell's 1979 notebook on the opera. A final chapter charts the opera's stage history and fluctuating critical reception.

                                        Book Description

This book is exceptional amongst those that have appeared so far in this well-established series, in that it is largely written by those who worked with the composer and assisted him during the period in which the opera was composed and first put on the stage. It will thus remain a source of first-hand information on Britten's final operatic achievement. Donald Mitchell was Britten's publisher at the time of Death in Venice and his Introduction includes many personal observations on the genesis of the work. The latter part of the book contains essays by T. J. Reed and Patrick Carnegy on the libretto's source in Thomas Mann's novella and Philip Reed compares briefly Visconti's cinematic interpretation of the novella. The volume is richly illustrated with music examples, sketches and extracts from the autograph score, and pictures from the first production. It will make an essential reference work and indispensable companion for opera-goers, students and scholars alike.
