Book Description

The Newbies' Money Guide: for Rookies and Late Starters is a heart-felt gift from the author. It's for all the people losing out on the life they want because of money mismanagement.

If you're a financial rookie, especially if you're getting a "late start" in saving and investing, you can learn some strategies that will save you heartache, bring you security, and help you create a better life for you and your loved ones.

First, the author invites you to put your money on your priorities, starting right now. If you examine how you're spending time, money and energy, you may be shocked at what you're promoting...and neglecting.

Many of us know what to do, but cannot make ourselves take the necessary steps. This book explains why, but more important, outlines simple steps to deal with these "ETs" (Emotional Troubles) that sabotage our best intentions to straighten out our finances.

The author, in a humorous, conversational style, simplifies complex financial material. She has a straight-forward approach that is understandable but not condescending. For example, her chapter on "How Not to Ruin Your Children's Lives", a formidable subject, spells out how to help children learn about money the "millionaires' way". "What About Stocks?" tells you who needs stocks, how to pick them, and how to go about acquiring them. Since she knows people, and her subject, she goes into detail about using creativity instead of budgeting to get out of debt.

The reason this book speaks so directly to common problems is that it evolved from a file that Coleen started when she was counseling clients at Principal Financial Group. Her compassion for financial late starters and rookies drew people to her. She developed materials to deal with the challenges her clients were facing. Every chapter is "by popular demand", featuring the questions that came from her intimidated and overwhelmed customers.

She retired from selling insurance and investments, only to find that those she had helped kept referring others to her. Her "graduates" from what she calls "Money Makeovers"(c) insisted on the chapter on Emotional Troubles, because she had motivated them to take action when they had been too scared to begin.

Most personal finance books aim at your head only; this one reaches your heart, soul, and "funny bone", too.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An ideal guide for the beginner........2000-07-03

The Newbies' Money Guide ins an exceptionally well written and presented guide to personal wealth and economic security specifically designed for readers who have not yet started their personal financial planning and are unfamiliar with the basic steps to securing, saving, and investing money. Author Coleen Moore brings a "real world" practicality to her series of simple steps she has devised for the novice money manager. The Newbies' Money Guide shows how to find the money to save and to invest; how to invest safely and build wealth through "catch up" investment strategies; protect your monetary resources from financial ruin; end unnecessary debt and counter emotional "money blocks". The Newbies' Money Guide is an ideal guide for the beginner and essential reading for anyone who has come to a realization that their current financial arrangements are simply inadequate for achieving their life goals and/or comfortable retirement.

5 out of 5 stars She did it........2000-03-24

We know the author! She really cares about people and that is why she wrote this book. She wants everyone to be debt free and financially secure. She is funny, compassionate and sincere, heck, she even gives out her telephone number. We appreciated the inclusion of the chapters on the E.Ts(emotional troubles) and how not to ruin your children's life, rarely discussed in a financial book. This book can change your life!

Who needs Stephen King when there are such real-life horrors as those described in Dr. Frank Ryan's new book, Virus X to keep sleep at bay? Such exotic killers as Ebola and Necrotizing Fasciitis rub elbows with more familiar, if no less potentially lethal, diseases like tuberculosis as Dr. Ryan constructs a well-researched and well-written study that reads more like a thriller than a science book. The heroes are the doctors, nurses, and patients on the frontlines of plague as well as the researchers at laboratories such as the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia; the enemies are the myriad new viruses and virulent new strains of old viruses that are emerging in ever greater numbers as this century wears to a close.

Dr. Ryan's answer for why so many plagues are ravaging the world these days is simple but chilling: a huge explosion in population (6 billion people alive today versus 1.5 billion a century ago) and the resulting destruction of habitats has brought human beings into contact with aggressive viruses that once lived beyond our reach; our global transportation systems spread them. Virus X is not the first book to raise these issues, but it's a comprehensive one, making for gripping, frightening reading.

A book that reads like a Steven King 'best of' horrors but without the fiction!

5 out of 5 stars Not just another doomsday book.......2005-10-04

Frank Ryan seems to be right at the point. If we are to see more of emerging diseases in the future, this book MAY explain why. The ''agressive symbiot hypothesis'' is a new idea that needs to be examined with a clear head, cause if it is valid there are big trouble ahead. Ryan states that most microbes, especially what we call emerging factors, are in fact guardians of the integrity of their hosts. He must have came upon this after the Sin Nombre outbreak, when it became apparent that Hanta viruses are geograficly restricted to the kingdom of their hosts. If an ecologic competitor appears, a fierce antagonism starts and the Locals will instincly try to kill, expel or outbreed the Intruders. But, under this well documented behaviour, a more clandestine battle takes place. The microbes that host specifically the one will ''attack'' the other, in an effort to expand to the new host. Because of immunologic differences the first ''jumps'' will be pathogenic, killing many of the antagonists, therefore acting as a biological weapon.
This has chilling implications when it comes to the destruction of the rain forests and the tens of thousands of species that live there. Assuming that humans are intruders, certain microbes will jump on us thereby protecting their natural hosts. No logic or strategy needed, we are just steping on someone elses turf and we must be prepared for the reaction... To my mind this seems like the HIV story.

4 out of 5 stars ANOTHER FASCINATING LOOK AT KILLER MICROBES.......2005-09-23

Frank Ryan begins his book on killer microbes with an account of the 1993 Hanta virus outbreak in New Mexico. Although it affected relatively few, he points out that it is actually one of the deadliest diseases known. He goes on to discuss Marburg and Ebola, and finally, AIDS. The last chapter examines the possibility of a Virus X, capable of destroying humanity or at least civilization.

The book is definately material for thought, and will likely stimulate the minds of most readers. The most novel element is probably the idea of symbiosis, which Ryan argues is critical in microbe evolution, and may explain why some viruses live in organisms without hurting them. I disagree with his conclusion, though. He sees Ebola and other rain forest viruses as nature's defense against human encroachment. The rain forests, he claims, harbor these diseases to defend themselves. It seems more likely to me that the great diversity of life in these forests alone explains the existence of microbes like Ebola. There are many reasons to preserve the rain forests, but fear of releasing a defensive virus need not be one of them

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent read!.......2004-02-19

This author gives a lot of information about how doctors with NOTHING, battling plagues in the wilds of Africa, are forced to improvise equipment.

He discusses what to look for in different diseases in Autopsies, safeguards, etc... He talks about docs performing autopsies outside on the ground, in the dirt, in the rain.

He discusses little known facts about projects USAMRIID has been working on (Counters to weaponized Ebola that the Russians have) and other little known facts like that the Ebola outbreak in Reston VA was Spread by Aerosol! It just happened not to be a strain that was easy to catch by humans (Even though lab workers ALL suddenly showed antibodies to Ebola in their blood, and several got "flu like symptoms" from it). I Was always lead to believe that the workers "Coincidently got the flu".. not true, they had a mild case of Ebola!

He talks about 1st world close calls, like the little girl returning to Britain on a mail plane with a doctor that was sick from Ebola (The Doc died).. even though she was in close physical contact with him, miraculously, she didn't catch it.. There have been SEVERAL of these close calls in several countries, the USA included.

He also discusses how diseases suddenly "pop up out of no where" as Asians and Africans move into more remote regions. They STILL do not know what animal host carries Ebola. Ebola is a HIGHLY mutable disease, which is why the Russians grabbed it for Bio-weapons... He predicts we'll see it many more times in the future.

For some reason, Americans think that "maybe a few hundred people have died from Ebola".. this is not true.. there have been several outbreaks in Africa, killing MANY THOUSANDS and forcing troops to quarentine whole cities.

***** Excellent book. A little dated now (Copyright 1997) but the info is solid. What makes it more believable it that the Trends he forecast in 1997 have come true.. like Species jumping viruses, Human/Bird viruses.

It's VERY easy to read. He gets technical, but he explains what the technical stuff means in such a way in the stories that before you realize it, you are reading the technical info with full comprehension without realizing that you learned it... Kinda makes you proud of yourself ;) What's more, you begin to anticipate what the Doctors in the stories should do... "Hey, he needs to run an ELIZA test from a Capture Assay! What idiot still uses a primitive fluorescent label? Look for the fixed antibody enzyme and then compare the color change bud!" *****

    3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 *'s for a well-told tale with missing pieces.......2003-10-11

The author presents an enjoyable, well-researched account of the emergence, identification and handling of killer viruses. He provides an explanation of viruses as biological entities and goes on to contrast their destructive potential with the faltering infrastructure that even the affluent nations have to deal with them.

Needed is a more precise targeting of text to the generalist audience; his biological treatises can be a bit much. Also needed is more extrapolation on what the viruses' killer potential might mean for mankind and potential remedies or alleviatives -- which is what the book advertises itself as addressing.

4 out of 5 stars Great for baking ideas.......2007-06-22

First let me agree with everyone else--if you have a gluten allergy, don't bother with this book. However, if you can tolerate gluten, it's great. I agree with the other reviewer in that you may need to tinker with the recipes to get a result you and your family like. In my opinion, the flour charts alone make this book worth buying. I just wish she would have added the carb, protein and fiber counts along with it.

          4 out of 5 stars Tasty stuff.......2006-11-05

Good recipes for main dish and sides. I like the info. on flours too.

3 out of 5 stars Title is Misleading.......2006-03-16

This book is designed for parents of children who are allergic to the most common allergenic foods. The "everything" means the usual foods, but if your child has multiple food allergies, this really isn't the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as I expected!.......2005-01-08

This book is O.K. and would be helpful to parents provided their child is not sensitive to sugar!! While the author provides substitutes, it would be up to you to "experiment" with the recipes. I for one do not have the time to tinker. My daughter has a sugar cane sensitivity among other things and I'd say that the majority of these recipes contain sugar, and quite a bit at that. I tried the banana loaf cake (this one is made with pure maple syrup)and it was EXTREMELY bland!!! We threw that out and the vinegar choc. cake was an absolute disaster because we had to try and guess at an appropriate substitution for the one cup of sugar! All in all, I wish I hadn't spent the money because there just aren't enough recipes that my daughter can actually eat "as is."

1 out of 5 stars Not for egg and milk allergies.......2003-12-12

This book has recipes with egg. And lots of kids who have milk allergies seem to have milk and egg. There are very few recipes that I found useful. I got very frustrated trying to find something that my son could eat. Sure you can use soy milk but then there is the egg. Does not make any sense to me. There are much better books out there. This one is useless for me.

I bought this book thinking that I would learn more about the ins & outs of buying and selling real estate in Washington state. However, this book is basically just a general real estate book which I might add is not good at all. I have yet to give a book a very negative review but there is no reason to buy this book.

1 out of 5 stars Almost nothing regarding Washington real estate.......2003-12-30

I bought and read this book. The title says it is a real estate buying selling guide for Washington. The book contains almost nothing about buying or selling real estate in Washington. There is a mention of excise tax rates and it includes some Puget Sound Board of REALTOR forms that are so small as to be unreadable. All that remains is a general primer on buying and selling real estate that is so basic as to be available from any Dummies book.

Almost everyhting in this book can be found in free publications from HUD.

Missing are discussions about the liability regarding old and possibly leaking heating oil tanks, discussion of title issues in the state regarding Native American lands, beach rights, or references for further reading to help the person interested in buying or selling real estate in Washington State.

I wish I hadn't wasted my money on this book.

Viviane Wayne is an exquisite writer. In 159 pages the author takes us on a journey through Turkey dating from 1453 (when Turkey was a possession of the Ottoman Empire) to the present. It is an intensely personal journey. On reading this story, I felt that Ms. Wayne had taken me by the hand on an adventure. Each page held new discoveries, historically, geneologically and psychologically. Her writing is beautifully crafted. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for something out of the ordinary. A marvelous read.

                          Book Description

Whether you’re a student or an executive, in an upper income bracket or operating on a tight budget, you need this manual of personal financial management. Whatever your level of income and education, building personal wealth requires a sound knowledge of the 33 basic principles of sound money management covered in this book. It will tell you in clear and colorful language the four most important words you will ever hear about handling your personal finances:

How to make credit work for you instead of against you; how to beat the banks at their own game; places you should NEVER put your cash. You’ll be surprised; how to avoid costly scams that are fleecing unwary victims every day; how to make every dollar you earn work for you; how to minimize Uncle Sam’s piece of your pie; how to recognize “rules” that were made to be broken; how to prepare for and enjoy a comfortable retirement.

You’ll treasure Money as a valuable permanent reference to help you travel the bumpy road to personal wealth.

3 out of 5 stars A WORTHY BIO OF JEFFERSON DAVIS.......2007-10-10

rHE AUTHOR WILLIAM C. DAVIS HAS WRITTEN MANY BOOKS ON THE CIVIL WAR AND THIS PERIOD OF OUR HISTORY. FOR A LONG TIME HE WAS EDITOR OF THE MAGAZINE CIVIL WAR ILLUSTRATED. SOME OF HIS BOOKS BELONG MORE IN THIS MAGAZINE THAN IN BOOK FORM. THISIS ONE OF HIS BEST, COMPARABLE TO HIS FINE WORK ON BRECKENRIDGE AND LIKE THAT EARLIER BOOK THIS OFFERS US A GOOD READ ABOUT THE POLITICS OF THE TIME BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH. IT IS A GOOD READ IN THE SENSE THAT THEE AUTHOR HAS GIVEN A GREAT DEAL OF TIME TO RESEARCH AND THINKING ON HIS SUBJECT. HOWEVER, IT IS NOT AS WELL WRITTEN AS SOME OTHER BIOS OF JEFF DAVIS.
WM. DAVIS ATTEMPS TO BE FAIR IN HIS ASSESSMENT OF DAVIS, NEITHER PRO NOR CON TO A GREAT EXTENT AND THIS SEEKING FOR FAIRNESS TAKES SOME OF THE EXCITEMENT FROM THE SUBJECT. ON THE WHOLE IT IS A WORTHY BOOK FOR ANY READER--PROFESSIONAL OR BUFF.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent analysis of the man and his time.......2004-08-13

Davis presents casual readers and historians with an excellent bio of Davis and his tenure as president of the short-lived Confederate nation. His meticulous research is evident in this interesting account of the man AND his motivations. I had the privilege of hearing Mr. Davis address a Civil War Round Table shortly after the publication of this book. His other works, especially "The Deep Waters of the Proud" are also highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars Davis on Davis........2004-06-23

William Davis has written many has written many wonderful books about the Civil War and quite frankly he has come a long way as a writer since he wrote this book. In this book all too often his sentence structure is poor and I had to read some sentences two or three times to see what he meant. There are also a few typos in this edition but that is hardly Davis' fault. On the other hand there is a reference in the book about Bedford Forrest being from Alabama which is hard to explain. Overall though this book is well written and will certainly hold the reader's attention.

All in all, this is an excellent biography of Jefferson Davis. I would suggest that anyone who reads this book also read William Cooper's biography of Davis because the two authors take different approaches to their subject and together they offer a great insight into the life of President Davis.

This biography tends to delve more into the personality quirks that made Davis who he was and is sometimes very critical of these quirks. In fact, this book is sometimes much more critical of Davis than is Cooper but on the other hand there is plenty of praise for the subject also. The author tends to focus on Davis as commander in chief and generally on his relationship with his generals, especially Joe Johnston, Beauregard and Bragg. These three relationships Davis argues were devastating to the Confederacy and were examples of Jefferson Davis at his worst. Full credit is given to Davis however for realizing what he had in Robert E. Lee and for doing all he could to support his best general through good times and bad.

After all is said and done the author reaches what seems like a sound conclusion. Jefferson Davis probably did as well or better than any of the other possible choices the South could have picked as their leader. He made mistakes but it was he who set up the structure that kept the armies in the field for four years. Davis was the one who persuaded Congress to pass the laws that sent the armies men and food, Davis chose Lee for command when "Granny Lee" was not at all popular, and Davis dealt with the obstinate Governors who tried to keep men and arms to themselves when they were desperately needed elsewhere. In short, Davis held the new nation together longer than most any other Southern leader could have.

Finally, the author deals quite well with the process that brought Davis to near sainthood in the South after the war. It was a process that started with his imprisonment in Fort Monroe and ended with one of the largest funerals in Southern history. Together, Cooper and Davis cover most every aspect of the life of Jefferson Davis and the two books compliment each other quite well. What Davis misses, Cooper takes care of and what Cooper only touches upon, Davis completes. These two books will serve as the most complete biographies of Jefferson Davis for years to come, and they may never be surpassed.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Jefferson Davis: A Much Challenged Man.......2004-05-22

WC Davis writes a thorough bio on one of the most unique icons in our history. Jeff Davis is shown from his youth, painful first marriage, through his political and military rise, to the senate and to the Chief Executive position in the Confederacy. WC's bio helps explain why Davis was so unwilling to give up to the point of unrealistic dreams during the final month of the war particularly when Lee's army collapsed. WC notes the sad loss of Jeff Davis' first wife that left him a social cripple for several years to his slow rebirth. His success in the Mexican war seemed to lead him to conclude that he was a superior military man and his role as the Secretary of Defense perhaps encouraged his perspective. More a man of criticism than bright ideas in the senate, he seemed to hold his perception of honor above all else. WC does a great job describing Jeff's relations with his generals particularly Lee who seems to placate Davis' need for detail unlike Johnson and Beauregard. At the end, Jeff Davis seems to hold the Confederacy by himself and his only last political hurrah may have been allowing Alexander Stephens to make his futile effort at peace in March 65. In the end, WC notes that Jeff Davis seems to rebound with the southern public aided by his cruel treatment at Fort Monroe by his captors; however, his two-volume book seems a disaster of disorganization. One has to respect Davis for holding the Confederacy together in spite of his true desire to be a general and particularly because of his ill health and fractured political support. The book answers the question of how Davis could ever imagine that the Confederacy could survive as he was riding with a small protective band through Georgia in his last hours acting more like a fugitive than the President of a country that could still rally.

5 out of 5 stars best biography on Davis.......2004-02-07

Once more, William C. Davis have provided us Civil War readers with another pure winner. Of all the biographies I have read on Jefferson Davis, this book definitely proves to be the best. It highly readable, interesting as well as entertaining and after you finished with the last page, you actually feel like you know something about Jefferson Davis, his talents which was outweighted by his weaknesses. The biography paint a rather tragic figure of man who was so devoted to his cause but yet, did so much to defeat it. The irony will proves to be unforgettable to anyone who read the book. I would considered this book to be one of these so called "must read" book by anyone who have a slightest interest in the Civil War.

                                        Book Description

Several Supreme Court battles during the Warren-Burger era finally brought public sector employees under constitutional protection, setting forth a new legal framework for personnel management. This new framework requires administrators to manage personnel foremost in compliance with the established constitutional principles without necessarily sacrificing efficiency. Public Personnel Administration and Constitutional Values is a sketch of this new framework in which constitutionalism and judicial accountability become defining characteristics. In the text the author provides, for the first time, a comprehensive review of case law principles in non-technical terms that are central to today's personnel management and decision-making: First Amendment freedoms, procedural due process, equal protection of the laws with respect to anti-discrimination, affirmative action, and compensation, and governmental and official liability. The author concludes that although excessive legalism may undoubtedly cause administrative timidity, a constitutionally competent administrator should be able to overcome this timidity; more important, a democratic administration grounded in constitutional values promises the best of all possible alternatives. This book is an invaluable addition to education and training for the students of public administration, as well as public administration practitioners at all levels in the United States. It also provides an important insight for the scholars of public administration in other parts of the world.

Manuel Antonio Chaves, New Mexican pioneer, Indian fighter, soldier, and rancher, made quite a reputation for himself during his lifetime (1818-1889). Born at Cebolleta, northwest of Albuquerque, Chaves first gained prominence as a foe of his corrupt uncle, the Governor of New Mexico, Manuel Armijo. He participated in the Mexican War and distinguished himself at the Battle of Taos Pueblo. In 1855 he was a captain of New Mexican volunteers in the Ute-Jicarilla War and rode against the Apaches on the Gila River in 1857. In the Civil War, he guided troops at Glorieta Pass, helping assure a Union victory. After the war he settled down to a rancher's life near San Mateo where he died in 1889.

Even though Chaves participated in a number of important events in the development of the Southwest, he was not a major figure in terms of the historical record. Not much has been written about him, and Simmons had quite a task before him to present an adequate picture of the man. He's done an admirable job, however, and the book is an interesting and informative account of El Leoncito.

5 out of 5 stars This is the type of stuff they left out of history books.......2001-06-03

Marc Simmons has done a wonderful job documenting the Southwest through many of his writings. In "The Little Lion of the Soutwest" he brings to life Manuel Antonio (Duran y) Chaves. Manuel lived through a drastically changing political environment of what he considered his homeland since when the Duran y Chaveses first found their way into what is now the American Southwest in the early 1600s. Simmons documents Manuel's childhood, military service, and livelihood through his son, Amado's collection, and other historical documentation. Mr. Simmons puts a face on some of the personalities that helped shape (what is now) New Mexico during the 1800s.

These are the tales of which my family grew up on. This story reminiscents to how well our great+ grandfathers lived compared to what resulted when many hispanic families were pushed off their lands. As a child, I remember hearing tales about the dealings with the Native Americans, having huge herds of cattle and sheep, and that there were a few in the family who fought in the old wars. During that time, I chalked these up as family "fish tales". In reading "The Little Lion", some of these myths come to life. Mr. Simmons helps in piecing together a history of what one great man of the Chavez family went through. For this I am grateful to read about because my fifth great grandfather was one of Manuel Antonio's uncles. Mr. Simmons writing's on Manuel Antonio Chavez makes many proud of the honor of being part of this "Distinctive American Clan".

This book is one I will always cherish, knowing someone took the time in giving a voice to a few lives of the Southwest. This is the stuff that should be taught in American History.

The Little Lion, by the simple peones of New Mexico who knew a century ago. Manuel Antonio Chaves earned that name in more than a score of battle with hostile Navajo, Ute, and Apache, and there can be little doubt that he was one of the finest Indian fighters the Southwest ever produced.
