Newbies' Money Guide : For Rookies and Late Starters
Coleen Moore Manufacturer: Point-Of-View Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0967695414 |
Book Description
The Newbies' Money Guide: for Rookies and Late Starters is a heart-felt gift from the author. It's for all the people losing out on the life they want because of money mismanagement. If you're a financial rookie, especially if you're getting a "late start" in saving and investing, you can learn some strategies that will save you heartache, bring you security, and help you create a better life for you and your loved ones.
First, the author invites you to put your money on your priorities, starting right now. If you examine how you're spending time, money and energy, you may be shocked at what you're promoting...and neglecting.
Many of us know what to do, but cannot make ourselves take the necessary steps. This book explains why, but more important, outlines simple steps to deal with these "ETs" (Emotional Troubles) that sabotage our best intentions to straighten out our finances.
The author, in a humorous, conversational style, simplifies complex financial material. She has a straight-forward approach that is understandable but not condescending. For example, her chapter on "How Not to Ruin Your Children's Lives", a formidable subject, spells out how to help children learn about money the "millionaires' way". "What About Stocks?" tells you who needs stocks, how to pick them, and how to go about acquiring them. Since she knows people, and her subject, she goes into detail about using creativity instead of budgeting to get out of debt.
The reason this book speaks so directly to common problems is that it evolved from a file that Coleen started when she was counseling clients at Principal Financial Group. Her compassion for financial late starters and rookies drew people to her. She developed materials to deal with the challenges her clients were facing. Every chapter is "by popular demand", featuring the questions that came from her intimidated and overwhelmed customers.
She retired from selling insurance and investments, only to find that those she had helped kept referring others to her. Her "graduates" from what she calls "Money Makeovers"(c) insisted on the chapter on Emotional Troubles, because she had motivated them to take action when they had been too scared to begin.
Most personal finance books aim at your head only; this one reaches your heart, soul, and "funny bone", too.

Who needs Stephen King when there are such real-life horrors as those described in Dr. Frank Ryan's new book, Virus X to keep sleep at bay? Such exotic killers as Ebola and Necrotizing Fasciitis rub elbows with more familiar, if no less potentially lethal, diseases like tuberculosis as Dr. Ryan constructs a well-researched and well-written study that reads more like a thriller than a science book. The heroes are the doctors, nurses, and patients on the frontlines of plague as well as the researchers at laboratories such as the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia; the enemies are the myriad new viruses and virulent new strains of old viruses that are emerging in ever greater numbers as this century wears to a close.Dr. Ryan's answer for why so many plagues are ravaging the world these days is simple but chilling: a huge explosion in population (6 billion people alive today versus 1.5 billion a century ago) and the resulting destruction of habitats has brought human beings into contact with aggressive viruses that once lived beyond our reach; our global transportation systems spread them. Virus X is not the first book to raise these issues, but it's a comprehensive one, making for gripping, frightening reading.

Excellent read!.......2004-02-19
He discusses what to look for in different diseases in Autopsies, safeguards, etc... He talks about docs performing autopsies outside on the ground, in the dirt, in the rain.
He discusses little known facts about projects USAMRIID has been working on (Counters to weaponized Ebola that the Russians have) and other little known facts like that the Ebola outbreak in Reston VA was Spread by Aerosol! It just happened not to be a strain that was easy to catch by humans (Even though lab workers ALL suddenly showed antibodies to Ebola in their blood, and several got "flu like symptoms" from it). I Was always lead to believe that the workers "Coincidently got the flu".. not true, they had a mild case of Ebola!
He talks about 1st world close calls, like the little girl returning to Britain on a mail plane with a doctor that was sick from Ebola (The Doc died).. even though she was in close physical contact with him, miraculously, she didn't catch it.. There have been SEVERAL of these close calls in several countries, the USA included.
He also discusses how diseases suddenly "pop up out of no where" as Asians and Africans move into more remote regions. They STILL do not know what animal host carries Ebola. Ebola is a HIGHLY mutable disease, which is why the Russians grabbed it for Bio-weapons... He predicts we'll see it many more times in the future.
For some reason, Americans think that "maybe a few hundred people have died from Ebola".. this is not true.. there have been several outbreaks in Africa, killing MANY THOUSANDS and forcing troops to quarentine whole cities.
***** Excellent book. A little dated now (Copyright 1997) but the info is solid. What makes it more believable it that the Trends he forecast in 1997 have come true.. like Species jumping viruses, Human/Bird viruses.
It's VERY easy to read. He gets technical, but he explains what the technical stuff means in such a way in the stories that before you realize it, you are reading the technical info with full comprehension without realizing that you learned it... Kinda makes you proud of yourself ;) What's more, you begin to anticipate what the Doctors in the stories should do... "Hey, he needs to run an ELIZA test from a Capture Assay! What idiot still uses a primitive fluorescent label? Look for the fixed antibody enzyme and then compare the color change bud!" *****
3 1/2 *'s for a well-told tale with missing pieces.......2003-10-11
Needed is a more precise targeting of text to the generalist audience; his biological treatises can be a bit much. Also needed is more extrapolation on what the viruses' killer potential might mean for mankind and potential remedies or alleviatives -- which is what the book advertises itself as addressing.

A WORTHY BIO OF JEFFERSON DAVIS.......2007-10-10

Davis on Davis........2004-06-23
All in all, this is an excellent biography of Jefferson Davis. I would suggest that anyone who reads this book also read William Cooper's biography of Davis because the two authors take different approaches to their subject and together they offer a great insight into the life of President Davis.
This biography tends to delve more into the personality quirks that made Davis who he was and is sometimes very critical of these quirks. In fact, this book is sometimes much more critical of Davis than is Cooper but on the other hand there is plenty of praise for the subject also. The author tends to focus on Davis as commander in chief and generally on his relationship with his generals, especially Joe Johnston, Beauregard and Bragg. These three relationships Davis argues were devastating to the Confederacy and were examples of Jefferson Davis at his worst. Full credit is given to Davis however for realizing what he had in Robert E. Lee and for doing all he could to support his best general through good times and bad.
After all is said and done the author reaches what seems like a sound conclusion. Jefferson Davis probably did as well or better than any of the other possible choices the South could have picked as their leader. He made mistakes but it was he who set up the structure that kept the armies in the field for four years. Davis was the one who persuaded Congress to pass the laws that sent the armies men and food, Davis chose Lee for command when "Granny Lee" was not at all popular, and Davis dealt with the obstinate Governors who tried to keep men and arms to themselves when they were desperately needed elsewhere. In short, Davis held the new nation together longer than most any other Southern leader could have.
Finally, the author deals quite well with the process that brought Davis to near sainthood in the South after the war. It was a process that started with his imprisonment in Fort Monroe and ended with one of the largest funerals in Southern history. Together, Cooper and Davis cover most every aspect of the life of Jefferson Davis and the two books compliment each other quite well. What Davis misses, Cooper takes care of and what Cooper only touches upon, Davis completes. These two books will serve as the most complete biographies of Jefferson Davis for years to come, and they may never be surpassed.

Public Personnel Administration and Constitutional Values
Yong S. Lee Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0899306101 |
Book Description
Several Supreme Court battles during the Warren-Burger era finally brought public sector employees under constitutional protection, setting forth a new legal framework for personnel management. This new framework requires administrators to manage personnel foremost in compliance with the established constitutional principles without necessarily sacrificing efficiency. Public Personnel Administration and Constitutional Values is a sketch of this new framework in which constitutionalism and judicial accountability become defining characteristics. In the text the author provides, for the first time, a comprehensive review of case law principles in non-technical terms that are central to today's personnel management and decision-making: First Amendment freedoms, procedural due process, equal protection of the laws with respect to anti-discrimination, affirmative action, and compensation, and governmental and official liability. The author concludes that although excessive legalism may undoubtedly cause administrative timidity, a constitutionally competent administrator should be able to overcome this timidity; more important, a democratic administration grounded in constitutional values promises the best of all possible alternatives. This book is an invaluable addition to education and training for the students of public administration, as well as public administration practitioners at all levels in the United States. It also provides an important insight for the scholars of public administration in other parts of the world.

This is the type of stuff they left out of history books.......2001-06-03
These are the tales of which my family grew up on. This story reminiscents to how well our great+ grandfathers lived compared to what resulted when many hispanic families were pushed off their lands. As a child, I remember hearing tales about the dealings with the Native Americans, having huge herds of cattle and sheep, and that there were a few in the family who fought in the old wars. During that time, I chalked these up as family "fish tales". In reading "The Little Lion", some of these myths come to life. Mr. Simmons helps in piecing together a history of what one great man of the Chavez family went through. For this I am grateful to read about because my fifth great grandfather was one of Manuel Antonio's uncles. Mr. Simmons writing's on Manuel Antonio Chavez makes many proud of the honor of being part of this "Distinctive American Clan".
This book is one I will always cherish, knowing someone took the time in giving a voice to a few lives of the Southwest. This is the stuff that should be taught in American History.
