5 out of 5 stars The most user friendly guide for Florida probate that I have encountered.......2007-02-19

For Floridians, this is a terrific resource for probate of an estate. Simple, straightforward and concise, it gets you where you need to be quickly, and is an instructive primer to review before retaining a probate attorney.

4 out of 5 stars Useful and informative.......2007-02-12

Some of the data my be 4-5 years out of date and the legal forms provided my not be county specific. Still, the book provides very useful information by an experienced Florida attorney, in a clear and well organized fashion.

Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Good info but accuracy of forms questionable.......2006-08-26

Overall, the guide was informative, but don't use the forms without additional research! The author DOES mention that the forms may not be correct for your particular county. They weren't. Headers, and signature blocks were incorrect for my county (Brevard). I found other examples of the correct documents online and adjusted accordingly. Simple items, such as providing the court with a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of judgements, seems like info that should have been in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent primer - will surely get you up on your feet quick.......2002-10-09

Highly recommended book. Besides a very pragmatic approach and rudimentary explainations of the basics the excellent feature about this book is the "further reading" section. It helped me discover "security analysis by graham and dodd". Just for that I'd pay many time over for this book.

The book itself explains things for the lay-person in non-complicated language. Sections on stocks, bonds and high level elementary strategies are also explained. Enough to get you started. What is best about this book is that you can read this book, buy a newspaper and get started.

    Highly recommended. Buy the book.

5 out of 5 stars excellent reference, good 'big-picture' book.......2000-10-18

I'm not sure what a 'beginning investor' is, but I used to have some investments, then suddenly had to deal with a lot more money. At that point, I read a number of these what-to-do-with-your-money type of books, and this one was far and away the best. It's not about how to pick individual stocks. But it will give you an excellent perspective on how to think about your needs, your goals, and your asset allocation and really make a coherent plan for handling your investments. It is well-written, clear, covers a lot of ground, pretty solid and can be pretty sophisticated. It doesn't just discuss different types of investments (although the discussion is pretty thorough), it helps you understand how to think about them in the context of your own investments. This is the only one of these books that I still refer to for information. It should be useful to beginning and experienced investors alike. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Useful for the beginner.......2000-01-10

This book is great for the beginning investor who is just starting out and considering his or her investment options. It explains the basics in clear language and defines key terms. However, if you are a novice or experienced investor and want more advanced guides to making investment decisions, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book.......1998-09-17

From Option Logic, September 16, 1998 Option Logic recommends this book to clients. The book has a deliberate approach that is necessary for surviving and succeeding in the investment arena. The book discusses the psychology of risk and reward early, and uses real life examples to help readers develop a perspective on what investments to choose and how they can be used to meet their goals. This look before you leap approach will serve serious investors well.

5 out of 5 stars Practical advice for the most common ministry field.......2005-01-19

This book has helped me in living out my faith in the workplace. Ross West has the hard won experience and spiritual depth needed to really be a guide to many of us in this challenging area. He addresses many areas such as responding to unethical situations and seeing spiritual value in our work/in others. He establishes a useful theology of why we work and what our work means and then proceeds to show many practical examples of how that theology can be applied in everyday work-a-day life. One of my favorite parts of the book is the simple but profound observation that we can and should view our work, no matter what it is, as ultimately helping another person somewhere. It's hard to think of a job where this is not the case and even though my technology job is somewhat removed from people directly, it does help them elsewhere. The book caused me to reflect on my work in constructive ways after years of confusion on this topic. I have already recommended the book to some close Christian friends who have the same challenges. It is not easy to find books that are as theologically sound and practical as this one. I am starting to read William E. Diehl who has also written in this area.

        Book Description

Andrew Wedeman argues that economic reform in China succeeded because government failed to prevent local officials from forcing prices to market levels. Reformers opted for a hybrid system of price controls in the 1980s, wherein commodities had both fixed and floating prices. Depressed fixed prices led to "resource wars," as localities vied for control over undervalued commodities while inflated prices fueled an investment boom that saturated markets and led to import barriers. Although local rent seeking and protectionism appeared to carve up the economy, they had actually cleared the way for sweeping reforms.

5 out of 5 stars An informative introduction to this volume of selected papers.......2005-07-05

The fifth volume of Liberty Fund's "The Selected Works of Gordon Tullock" series, The Rent-Seeking Society: Gordon Tullock is expertly edited by Charles K. Rowley (Duncan Black Professor of Economics, George Mason University) who also provides an informative introduction to this volume of selected papers by economist and academician Gordon Tullock which he wrote between 1954 and 2002. This collection has the specific focus of Tullock's views on the integration of rent seeking (outlays by individuals and interest groups to secure economic rents and privileges through government) into a general public choice model of political markets, the cost of rent seeking to society, and the current status of the field. Of special note are two critically important monographs: "Rent Seeking" and "Exchanges and Contracts", as well as definitive chapters drawn from Tullock's "The Economics of Special Privilege and Rent Seeking". This fifth volume, and all four of its predecessors, are core contributions to academic and professional library reference collections for Economic Studies.

This book focuses on the negative effects of planned price controls and regulation in generating an `underground economy' of black markets, rent-seeking behaviour, and other directly unproductive activities. The author presents econometric models of these effects in partially suppressed and completely suppressed markets.

                Description:
This paper incorporates rent seeking from state coffers into a general equilibrium model of economic growth and endogenous policy. Self-interested individuals try to extract, for personal benefit, part of tax revenues that could be used to finance public investment. We solve for a non-cooperative Nash equilibrium in individual agents' behavior. The determinants of rent seeking in general equilibrium are identified and we consider the efficient size of public sector given the rent-seeking activity. Cross-country data from 108 rich and developing countries provide support for our predictions.

                  Description:
Volunteer labor is analyzed as a selfish, rational investment activity that people undertake to compete for rents, or prizes, auctioned off by a nonmarket, output-maximizing organization. The model is located at the intersection of the tournament and rent-seeking literatures and proves that, with identical risk-neutral individuals, only two prizes, and free entry, the organization will find it optimal to set the bottom prize at zero and thus promote a volunteer contest. A broad range of real-world examples is shown to fit well with the model.

                    Description:
Bigger governments raise the possibilities for corruption; more corruption may in turn raise the support for redistributive policies that intend to correct the inequality and injustice generated by corruption. We formalize these insights in a simple dynamic model. A positive feedback from past to current levels of taxation and corruption arises either when wealth originating in corruption and rent seeking is considered unfair, or when the ability to engage in corruption is unevenly distributed in the population. This feedback introduces persistence in the size of the government and the levels of corruption and inequality. Multiple steady states exist in some cases.

                      Description:
It is known that the option of delegation in a rent-seeking contest between two individuals leads to a prisoner's dilemma. In equilibrium, no player hires a delegate, while it is Pareto-efficient if both hire one. This paper shows that this result does not generalize to a contest between the members of two groups. I further provide the conditions under which zero, one, or both groups hire a delegate in equilibrium.

                        Description:
In competitive-share groups, groups of players compete for a rent and members of the winning group share the prize according to a weighted average of relative outlay and egalitarian shares. In strategic groups, group members compete individually for a rent and the winner keeps a part of the rent, and divides the rest among group members. In this note, we show that these two portrayals of rent seeking with groups are equivalent.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in both art and history. I found it well documented and scholarly. The author includes many of Szyk's beautiful full-color illustrations.
