4 out of 5 stars Two Proud Regiments.......2006-08-28

This is a first class narrative of two very proud and successful regiments of cavalry. It is obviously well researched.

The author nearly goes astray in at least two places by going off on a tangen but recovers quickly and gets back to the point. He certainly likes the word "deprecate" and by the end of book I wished he could have used a thesaurus. Also, he discribes their maneuvers as "marches" where in fact the 9th and 10th must have ridden as they were, after all, mounted soldiers.

The biggest fault, in my opinion, is the very ending. What happen to these two regiments? Where they disbanded and if so, what happen to some of the major figures? This interesting story seems to come to an abrupt halt without so much as a wave goodbye.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent narrative of the forgotten west........2006-02-06

William H. Leckie's Buffalo Soldiers proves to be a well written and well researched book on the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments which were stationed mostly in the southwest section of the United States from Texas to Arizona. Both regiments were manned by black soldiers although officered by whites. Long forgotten by history, the book reflects on the valuable services these black soldiers contributed to the creation of our nation in that region. The book, I thought did a great justice in retelling this story that Americans in general have forgotten. The book traces the history of these "buffalo soldiers" (as coined by the Indians for black soldiers' woolly hair) between 1866 to 1891. The book covers all the military activities of these two regiments and provides insights to the campaigns and battles they fought. The book also reflects in part, the near unending forces of prejudice these buffalo soldiers had to put up with from the rest of the army and its civilian overlords.

As far as I can see, this remains one of the few books that gives a definitive accounts of the buffalo soldiers during this period. Only real weakness I see in this book was that it didn't give great details into the lives and insights to these black soldiers who fought so well. But the book is still worth reading if not for anything, to see how well men fights, if well led and well trained, against the prejudices of their own nation and against cunning and powerful Indian foes who ironically, was fighting for what these black men were fighting for, respects and equality. I will end this review with an ironic quote from the movie, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, "Men in dirty-shirt blue, only a page in history books to mark their lives. But wherever they rode, whatever they fought for, that place became the United States". Thus lies the legacy of the buffalo soldiers.

4 out of 5 stars THE BOOK WAS VERY INTERRESTING........1999-04-20

I FELT THAT THE BOOK WAS VERY SPECIFIC. IT DEALT WITH MANY DETAILS OF THE BUFFALO SOLDIERS AND THE INDIANS AND THE GENERALS. IT ALSO WENT AS FAR AS TO SHOW SOME OF THE PICTURES THAT WERE INVOLVED. I READ THE BOOK FOR A BOOK REVIEW FOR CLASS. BUT I WILL READ IT AGAIN FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING. MY 12 YEAR OLD NEPHEW READ THE BOOK AND INJOYED IT.

      Book Description

Originally published in 1967, William H. Leckie's The Buffalo Soldiers was the first book of its kind to recognize the importance of African American units in the conquest of the West. In this revised edition, the authors further explore the lives of buffalo soldiers in the Ninth and Tenth Cavalry Regiments, showing that they were increasingly confident in their fighting ability and, above all, determined to prove themselves worthy of their newly entitled citizenship.

Before William Leckie's groundbreaking work, buffalo soldiers had been relegated to historical obscurity. Thirty-six years later, with sales of more than 75,000 copies, The Buffalo Soldiers is a classic. Now, in a newly revised edition, the authors expand the original research.

Written in accessible prose that includes a synthesis of recent scholarship, (I>The Buffalo Soldiers: A Narrative of the Black Cavalry in the West, Revised Edition, delves further into the social impact of being an African American soldier in the nineteenth century. This work also explores the experiences of the soldiers' families at frontier posts. In a new epilogue, the authors summarize developments in the lives of buffalo soldiers after the Indian Wars and discuss contemporary efforts to memorialize them in film, art, and architecture.

The revised edition of THE BUFFALO HUNTERS: A NARRATIVE OF THE BLACK CALVARY IN THE WEST updates a classic originally published in 1967, when it was the first book to recognize the importance of Afro-American units in the opening of the West. This revised edition expands the original research to explore the lives of these soldiers in the 9th and 10th Calvary Regiments, using recent scholarship to expand and enhance discoveries and creating an eye-opening title recommended for any college-level or in-depth collection of either military or Afro-American history.

      Book Description

The first novel in an ambitious new series, a fictional history of the west as seen through the eyes of runaway slave Nate Gordon. He has returned to Louisiana as Sergeant Major Nate Gordon of the Tenth United States Cavalry. His job, to recruit and form the second US colored cavalry, the Ninth Negro. Three years have passed since Nate left Louisiana and his life as a slave, to join the Union Army. The war is now over, and it is clear that the South has paid a heavy toll. Nate's former home is a tattered collection of dilapidated buildings and ruined plantations.Where once opulence and order ruled, poverty corruption and crime now thrive. Resentful and disgruntled white Southerners want nothing to do with Nate and his stripes. Racist Union officers and noncoms only make his task more difficult. Nate struggles to quell dissent from the ranks and to keep outside forces at bay as the Ninth Cavalry moves from the docks of Louisiana to the wide open West.

5 out of 5 stars Buffalo Gordon On The Plains.......2004-06-03

Bravo! I did not want this book to end!
I laughed out loud and at times was so deeply moved, I cried.

While I cheered the romance between Nate and Cara, I found the descriptive encounters between Nate and the Plains Indians, captivating. Rich in historical detail, this is an engaging and thought provoking book.

The author has certainly left this reader anxiously awaiting the next installment of this powerful saga.
      Cheers to J. P. Lewis!

5 out of 5 stars Grand entertainment and important history as well.......2002-03-01

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good, fast-paced historical adventure. Lewis is a good storyteller, as well as a careful historian. The book, which tells the story of Nate Gordon, an African-American "buffalo soldier" on the western frontier, is well-plotted, action-packed, and very atmospheric, really putting you there on the ground with Nate. Lewis is also very attentive to historical detail, perhaps a bit too much so for some readers who may not want to know all of the technical and historical detail, but this is a minor quibble. More importantly, Buffalo Gordon provides us with an African-American hero of the "wild west," reminding us that it was not only the stereotypical "Marlboro (white) Man" who populated America's western frontier. Nate is a bit one-dimensional in the sense of being perhaps too perfect (he never behaves badly, always does the right thing), but that is largely what heroes are about. Lewis's writing style is not perfect - this is apparently his first novel, and he is still finding and perfecting his voice - but he is a fine storyteller, the writing is perfectly serviceable, and as the series continues, I imagine he will further hone his narrative skills. Overall, I give it five stars because I wholly enjoyed it (raced through it actually), and look forward to Nate's further adventures.

      1 out of 5 stars Buffalo Gordon.......2002-02-03

I read this book expecting to find a well written, entertaining and historically accurate piece of fiction based on the cover blurbs. The book may have been researched, concerning McClellan saddles and post-Civil War uniforms and some battles on the northern plains. Some of the characters even ring true to their historical reputation. However, the great number of spelling errors and factual inaccuracies leave me distrustful of all the "facts" portrayed in the book. Most glaring of errors was the rising sun in the West on page 179 of the hard cover edition, followed a few pages later by the mention of "crape myrtle." The author's attempt at slave dialect left me totally cold. Perhaps I could be mistaken about the rank of Sergeant Major, but prior to June 1, 1958 the title of Sergeant Major was the designation of a position and not a rank. The designation was given to the senior noncommisioned officer of a regiment who was also the senior noncommissioned administrator of the regiment. What could have been a great book was ruined by the lack of an editor. Hopefully the next book in the series will be edited prior to printing. The steamy sex scenes added little if any to the over all effort and could have been somewhat less explicit. After reading other reviews of this book, I believe that those reviewers read a different edition.

5 out of 5 stars A Fresh Perspective about the American Frontier.......2001-07-21

For readers who enjoy fast-paced, historical fiction, I highly recommend Buffalo Gordon. Even though the post-Civil War, American frontier does not rank high on my list of interesting historical eras, I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about it through the exciting adventures of Nate Gordon. Mr. Lewis has provided a well-researched account of this period with a fresh and dramatic fictional perspective. The book also is timely and in step with recent publications about African American military history, including Gail Buckley's AMERICAN PATRIOT. I recommend an earlier review of Buffalo Gordon by Celia DuBose on this site. She succinctly summarizes the book and provides an excellent critique of the book that is "spot on" in my opinion. I look forward to reading Mr. Lewis' sequel to Buffalo Gordon.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Buffalo Gordon.......2001-03-22

J.P. Sinclair Lewis offers his readers a kaleidoscopic peak into post-Civil War social relations as experienced by runaway slave Nate Gordon, who stays in the U.S. Army to fight in the Indian Wars as a Buffalo Soldier.

At turns grisly, moving, and altogether unexpected, the story never fails to entertain with bodaciously colorful bits of history both real and imagined. Characters like General Custer, Wild Bill Hickock, Cougar Eyes, and Roman Nose come so vividly into view that the reader might scratch her nose at the tickle of feathers or reach out to touch those dandy duds.

Nate, from the beginning, is such an appealing character that the reader just sighs to learn how elegantly he handles the contradictions of his alliance with the white man against the indigenous population-then smiles to read that in the end, whether he knows it or not, Nate has found love, and we will be treated to a sequel.

This reader hopes that in the next adventure the author tames some of his awkward action sentences and that we get to meet a woman who hasn't either been raped or forced to work as a prostitute (i.e. raped). And next time Nate and Cara make love I want to know less about what's happening with Nate's pelvis and more about what's happening with his heart.

      Can't wait to find out.

This book takes you there, Vietnam, that is. Christopher talks about what it is like to be on the sharp tip of the spear day after day after day, with little rest. Leadership in such circumstances takes its toll. He survived somehow despite all of his close calls. A Ranger and Cavalryman both, he was a great soldier and a good man in a bad place, but he kept his man alive.

If you are or were a soldier, especially cavalryman, read this book!

I enjoyed the real life stories told by this author..it was evident that he volunteered in this kind of work because he truly cared about people and wanted to help those in crisis..Our world would be alot better if more people would treat their fellow man as Mr. Reding has !!! This is easy reading and one you can pick up again and again...don't miss it.

Mr. Reding has quite an insight into everyday living and dealing with crisis! He very poignantly describes many predicaments and crises that everyday people fall into. His stories cover the gamut from amusing to heart-wrenching and unusual. This book is quick and interesting reading. No one story is alike. The insight conveyed by someone working in crisis intervention is quite fascinating! I found myself not wanting to put the book down, but read on to hear what the next "situation" might be. The end of the book has a very comprehensive list of crisis numbers and phone lines throughout the U.S. I highly recommend reading this interesting book!

5 out of 5 stars great insight into humans problems.......2001-08-24

This was a very interesting book; more like a set of short stories-all different and interesting. Made me respect the volunteers that deal with these problems on a daily basis; it not only takes a lot of compassion, but also a lot of patience. The book also makes one realize that sometimes our own problems are very small in comparison to what others may be going thru.. great reading!!

                    Book Description

Lotteries and state-sponsored gambling is big business. This is the first study that evaluates the business strategies of state lotteries on two fronts. First, it examines which of the lottery strategies produces the most consistent source of revenue for the state. Second, it analyzes possible overall gambling strategies that states will need to utilize as they seek to expand gambling revenue. This is must reading for those operating lotteries, state legislators, vendors to state lottery commissions, taxpayers, and scholars in public policy and government. The whole question of state-sponsored gambling is explored, integrating both the business and policy strategies of operating a state lottery. Initially, gambling and lotteries were introduced into the public policy process in times of social unrest, brought on by the outbreak of war. Since regular sources of governmental revenue were diverted to the war effort, proceeds from gambling activites were used to finance the building of roads, canals, and schools. An "Ethics of Tolerance" also had to evolve in order to engender the public's acceptance of lotteries and gambling. Today, states are using gambling revenues to support education, public transportation, and aid to local towns and cities. Hence, gambling revenues must be maintained or increased. States now must decide whether they should introduce other gambling initiatives, possibly cannibalizing their existing activities in the process. The basic question, of whether it is actually possible for a state to establish an overall gambling strategy, is explored by an analysis of the gambling policies of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. The future of gambling in the United States, as states move beyond lotteries to sanctioning casino gambling by private entrepreneurs, concludes this most relevant and provocative book.

                            Book Description

This text has been developed to satisfy two major goals. First, we build the confidence, assurance, and poise of the reader with regard to energy matters, in general, and energy effects on real estate, in particular. The reader must have a basic understanding of the energy sectors so that he or she can be comfortable with what is to follow. Secondly, the text strives to develop competence in the reader, so that he or she can proficiently perform the analytical evaluations needed to incorporate energy factors into his or her business routines. The intent of these goals is to provide the reader with the tools needed, and to demonstrate how these tools can be used to improve the reader's way of doing business. The text includes applications of these tools to actual energy saving methods, but it does not dictate "pat" answers to the energy crisis. Instead, it strives to provide the reader with the best answers for a particular market area. This approach also enables the reader to adjust to changing conditions and to evaluate new energy conserving devices not discussed in the text. This report was originally prepared for and published by the U. S. Department of Energy. At the time of original publication Hans R. Isakson was Assistant Professor, Department of Real Estate and Urban Development, College of Business Administration, University of Georgia; and Deena D. Kushner was Staff Consultant, Small Business Development Center, College of Business Administration, University of Georgia.
