Excellent tool for nearing retirement........2006-04-26
I enjoyed reading Retire Sooner, Retire Richer. The book inspired me to create a successful strategy for nearing retirement. The book especially addresses the needs for Baby Boomers to plan at least five years ahead of retirement. For those who have retired, the book helps them to better plan thier retirement income so that it may last a lifetime! Highly recommend this book to all!!
Retirement--It's more complicated than you think! .......2004-10-12
Being a student of the market and saving like a mad man for the past 14 years, I thought I was on top of my game in planning for retirement. Boy, after reading "Retire Sooner, Retire Richer: How to Build and Manage Wealth to Last a Lifetime", I quickly discovered that it is much more involved in planning for a successful retirement than I had ever imagined. The first thing that came to light in reading this book is how to go about determining "how much is enough?" Once I jumped this hurdle, it hit me like a ton of bricks that I was taking on far too much risk with my current investment portfolio, especially with less than five years until my target age for retirement. After reading about the importance of establishing a personal Investment Policy Statement, I created one, and it's now a part of my estate plan. The book even outlines how to go about tapping various sources of retirement funds and explains the importance of using tax intelligent payout strategies. The worksheets and other helpful planning tips became my personal "to do list" before preparing my formal retirement plan. I even ordered some of the suggested supplemental reading materials. I encourage anyone over 50 to read this book. You'll be glad you did!
Essential Advice for a Person Who Wants to Retire Early.......2004-01-17
If you make a mistake with your retirement planning, chances are you will have to live with that mistake for the remainder of your life . . . and wish you had been more careful. Retire Sooner, Retire Richer will help you avoid the bulk of the mistakes that trip up the majority of people. The book is written in a common sense way that can be understood by almost anyone.
A portion of the author's income from the book will go towards low-income workers and their families affected by September 11, 2001, and to charities serving the hungry and homeless, such as Greater New York Labor-Religion Coalition, Second Harvest (USA), Catholic Relief Services (outside the U.S.), and Habitat for Humanity International.
When I first learned about Retire Sooner, Retire Richer, I was skeptical that it could add anything to my knowledge of investments, tax law, estate planning and how to get practical advice. As a result of reading the book, I was pleasantly surprised to learn a great deal of valuable information that I did not know before. After having assessed that information, it made me realize that anyone who works for a company, wants to retire early and desires to leave an estate behind needs a great deal of help. I strongly encourage anyone who is within 10 years of retirement to read this book!
The book opens with one of the best explanations I have ever seen about why volatility in financial instruments means that you have to be very conservative in planning your retirement investments and even more conservative in withdrawing from your retirement savings. Otherwise, you don't save enough and a down market can cause you to wipe out your savings at a time when stock prices are low. This really hit home after seeing the stock market drop for three straight years until 2003. The suggested guidelines in both areas made a lot of sense to me.
Next, Mr. Netti described many ways that you can choose to reduce the current and future taxes to be paid on your income and savings. Most of these choices are only available to you well before you retire. So if you wait until the day before retirement, you will lose many valuable tax reductions. In addition, if you die before your planned retirement date, failure to use these choices will cost your heirs quite a lot!
From reading the text, I began to appreciate that the tax laws governing pension payouts and IRAs have gotten to be very complex. Only someone who follows these details on a daily basis and works with them all of the time can hope to appreciate and take advantage of all the nuances if you want to retire early. From this, I began to see (for the first time) why the advice from a well-schooled financial advisor can pay a vast multiple of the cost of such an advisor. Mr. Netti certainly seems to be such an advisor.
He goes on to give you a process to locate the right financial advisor for you. The process seems like a good one, although I have never personally looked for a financial advisor. Reading Retire Sooner, Retire Richer will also prepare you to get more benefit from working with an advisor.
If you are totally averse to ever working with a financial advisor, this book may change your mind. Reading the book struck me as being a lot like what you might discuss with a financial advisor. I was grateful for the chance to have this dry run on the experience.

Don't let the title fool you.......2003-09-11
While I found this book useful, I thought the title was kind of misleading. There is really nothing specifically addressing retiring young. In fact, the book will more likely scare you into working to 65+. Also, I sometimes felt like I was reading propoganda material for the financial analyst/management industry. What I walked away with was - work as long as you can stand it then hire as many people as you can afford to help you manage your retirement pot. Granted, not bad advice.
Lastly, just FYI, the book is geared solely to traditional families. Unmarried partners wanting specific advice should look elsewhere. I found this to be kind of surprising for a book published in 2003.
Great book for those planning to retire!!.......2003-06-05
I have worked in the investment business for over 7 years and I have been involved in retirement planning. Too many people have found that investing for retirement has become complex. Mr Netti's book helped me to understand (in easy to understand language) how my plans can be affected by many variables, ie., investment returns, withdrawal rates, longevity, etc. Also, it is important to me to find the right advisors to help me choose and monitor those investments. There are many advisors out there and this book enabled me to determine what type of advisor I need, where to look, how to hire and pay for advice. It will save much time and money as I plan to retire. Since there are no competency or ethical standards regulated under the banking, insurance or securites laws, a book like "Retire Sooner, Retire Richer" helped me to find the right person for me.

Until the 19th century very large areas of western Europe were subject to some degree to common rights, where individual users collectively managed resources such as pasture and wood which were central to the agrarian economy. Much scholarship has focused on the dissolution of these rights and the effects of the enclosure of common land on society and agricultural productivity. In contrast, this volume seeks to assess in a comparative framework the long-term management of the common lands and the relative success of strategies in providing the resources sought by the rural population. Chapters covering northern and southern England, France, the Netherlands, Flanders, Sweden and northern and southern Germany examine the institutional and legal framework of commoning, the resources available and their value, the sustainability of practices, and policies of inclusion and exclusion among the group of commoners. Building on the theoretical insights of recent works on commonly managed resources, this volume, the result of an international collaboration in the CORN network, provides a series of detailed historical studies and is the first major work to address this central aspect of the agrarian economy in a comparative European context.

If you really want to know about this topic . . . ........2003-04-20
This is an extremely useful book. It begins with northern England and covers the continent west of the Elbe and north of the Alps, including Scandinavia. Since most American readers tend to have some familiarity with England if with any region, this may be practical. However, it leads to a recommendation that the reader definitely should not stop with the first chapter, because only later does it become apparent that there were many other ways of handling "commons" and many different definitions of what was "common."

Ultimate and intimate biography of possibly the most pleasant voice the world has ever known.......2007-06-22
This biography is an excellent nice surprise. There are three kinds of biographies: 1)written by a ghostwriter (who often did not know the person itimately or at all), 2) written by a close friend or relative, or 3)autobiography. After reading this one, and many others like Isadora, Rockefeller, Heisenberg, Newton, Einstein, Von Braun, Rembrandt, I opt for the second option. Biographies like this one, written by a close friend or relative simply give the best of both worlds: intimate information normally inaccessible to others, and still an objective but well informed and not too speculative view.
This book is told by Caruso's second son, who was fortunately bestowed with an excellent memory and decided in the last years of his life, thank God, to put this story together before it would be too late. He was only 17 when his father died in 1921. His son said himself he was more a storyteller than a writer, and as for choosing the writer Andrew Farkas he also did an excellent job. The style is very readable and elegant. It is simply fascinating to read about a life in the Edwardian says, and especially such a famous one.
Many biographies tend to become a bit tedious since in trying to be definitive they often sum up too many facts without paying attention to a general idea of the meaning of the biography itself, that is, why that person, in this case Caruso, is worth a written life story and why the reader should care to read on.
This book shows how it should be done. Not only is it an intimate insight in Edwardian life, also it shows how it is to be the child of such a unique artist. Even more unique is that more than going into voice studies and the like, it is about the life of the great tenor at home, after the concerts (of which he did many). It shows Caruso the man, the character, the child, the tragedies (of loosing his wife to his chauffeur), the father, and last but not least Caruso the Italian.
This is a definite great addition to the vast literature of Caruso. There are enough books and studies written on Caruso the voice, but none will ever surpass this one about Caruso's intimate, or as Proust would put it, 'real' life. Although seen through the eyes of his then young son, who was old when he told it to the world, it gets as close to the facts as we will probably ever be. His son is convincing in his objectivity by just telling what happened. This story is no idealisation of his father. As an example: many biographies were supposed to be hostile to his mother Ada after she left the family. This biography shows why she might have left while at the same time it also makes understandable why his son must indeed have loved his (dramatic) father so much. Caruso was a real Italian, having possibly many relationships, but still acting out when his wife left him for it. Apart from this, many other myths and errors in other biographies are corrected. So why read another biography when you can buy this one?
His son was a Caruso as many Italians, although not bestowed with such greatness as his father. Elegantly enough he even admitted himself that at six years of age he wondered he had to be the son of this great artist.
He can rest assured that he has done his job well by telling the world as neutrally as possible who his father Caruso was, with all his flaws and greatness. Turning the last pages we can only agree with his son's enormous affection for Caruso, who was not only a great actor on stage, but full of melodrama in real life, like a real Italian.
How wonderful it would have been had he only lived in our time, but thanks to the recording technology we can still enjoy many of his songs, and thanks to his son, we also have a glimpse of his intimate life as close as it will ever be.
I recommend this book to any Opera lover, or any person who loves this era or any good biography, as I do not see how this will ever be surpassed, not even by Caruso himself were he still alive - since according to his son, he would never have admitted his mistakes, and his autobiography, if existed, would have been too flattered.

The book is gorgeous. Without doubt the best book ever written about Caruso(and there are thousands). And it is exiting to read too... Go and get it! You'll love it! It's just a pitty (and I mean a real pitty) that this is the abridged version - the full one is even better (just in case you love to read ghost stories of how Caruso appeared to his son or you want to know what happened to all the people, Carusos belongings and his body after he died.)
Best book available on the greatest tenor of the century.......1997-08-17
Enrico Caruso is the greatest tenor of this century. I say "is" because every tenor is still compared to Caruso (not to one of "The Three"); his records, all predating the microphone, still sell 76 years after his death; and there are more books about the life and art of Caruso than any other singer. The original version of this book appeared seven years or so ago and was regarded as one of the best Caruso biographies ever written. The book has now been streamlined to remove chapters that were more about the family after Caruso's death than about the great tenor. Not only did Caruso's son have access to family photos, letters, etc denied other biographers but he also has the unique first-hand perspective. Caruso Jr and his co-author, Andrew Farkas, produced a balanced, admirable biography with a smootly flowing narrative. This book belongs on the shelf of every opera lover beside copies of Robinson's collection of Caruso photos and a collection of Caruso's caricatures. Even though I have copies of numerous other biographies of Caruso, this one is the best and the others can be put aside

Exhaustive research?.......2006-08-13
I was given this book by a friend who knows of my love for Caruso's music. The industry reviews on this page talk about the "exhaustive research" done by the author. I had to put the book down after page one: within three paragraphs, the author repeats one of the most preposterous lies about Caruso's life, that his mother had 17 previous children who died within a year of their birth. Then I flipped back to the dust flap, where it claims that Caruso performed "an astonishing 37 major roles each year" at the New York Metropolitan Opera. Newsflash: Caruso's mother did not lose 17 children: Enrico (Errico) was the third of seven children. And no tenor every performed 37 different roles in one year, let alone EVERY year. To accomplish the latter, the Met would have had to run performances 52 weeks a year, with Caruso changing roles every 10 days for 17 years. How can one trust a book that makes mistakes like that before you even get to page 2?

This biography about the best tenor of them all, Enrico Caruso,is very well written and - what is already much in the collection of the hundreds of Caruso biographies - the facts are well researched. The best is the discography at the end, if you are a collector or just a fan -that's the one to get! If you look for an even more comprehensive biography, get yourself "my father and my family" in the unabridged version by Enrico Caruso jr.

An excellent audio-biography.......2004-01-31
If you reading this page, you must know by now that Naxos has been issuing a series called Life and Works, audiobiographies of famous composers. Never shy of surprises, Naxos now gives us what I hope is the start of a new series, A Life in Words and Music. "Enrico Caruso" is now available on a 4-CD boxed set (8.558131-34) with a text and narration by British actor David Timson (the voice of the composers in the other series) and 30 original Caruso recordings to support and illuminate the text.
Caruso was a fascinating personality, prone to human weaknesses but seldom losing his sense of humor. Timson gives us all the pertinent facts about his incredible rise to stardom, his domestic problems, the Monkey House scandal, even the Black Hand's threats on his life, his continuing battle with throat problems. Unlike some other opera stars, he is a thoroughly lovable character and I found myself really getting to like and admire him as the story of his life spun out on these wonderful CDs.
By the way, each of the 30 recordings, dating from 1902 to 1920 (how sad he missed the age of electric recordings,) is played complete; so having this set can even be the start of a collection of all his recordings, all of which are available in 12 volumes in the Naxos Historical series.
The tracking list in the booklet can send you to any point in Caruso's career or to any one of the 30 recordings. All in all, a very worthwhile package from Naxos.

A MUST for all music lovers!.......2004-02-05
Who would know more about Enrico Caruso than his wife! This book is about a man who KNEW what he was doing, how he was doing it and WHY he did it. Caruso's letters will touch your heart because he wrote them in a initable language and you will know the personal side of this great tenor. Dorthy Caruso was an excellent writer gives you an up-close and personal look in to his life and discography. There is also a very interesting appendix in the back of the book. Enrico Caruso didn't live forever but his singing did and still does today. The world will never forget him. He will always be in our hearts. I hope he is singing in Heaven.

The book is written by Carusos wife, who he married 3 years before he died . She describes therefore in great detail and citing many letters by him their life and what happened, how is character was etc. She carefully leaves his private life before their marriage out (get this in "my father and my family" by Enrico Caruso jr.:-), but nevertheless - the book is great to read. The first book she wrote about him, shortly after his death (wings of song) is good too and is may be a little bit closer to truth. But to read Carusos letters in this book here is already worth the while....

Key's biography was written shortly after Caruso's death by someone who knew him and loved him as a singer and as a man. All subsequent bios owe much to this one (even Caruso errors, like the weird assertion that his mother bore 18 children).
I love the intimacy, the palpable sense of loss that permeates the book, as if the author would gladly burn his manuscript if only the great tenor would return.

Key made a lot of interviews with Caruso before he died at the age of 48, the interviews found their way into the book. The book is one of the most important about Caruso.
