Let's Be Honest.......2004-08-30

This book has a religious orientation that is not revealed until you open it and start reading. I have no objections to religion for those who choose it, however, I resent the "hidden agenda" aspect of this book. If I had known in advance this was a religion-based book, I would not have bought it. I think that's the idea behind their keeping quiet about it.

Great Handbook for the Beginning Pilot.......2007-05-17

I really enjoyed this book. There is enough humor to keep your interest high when the going gets technical. It is a great adjunct to use in addition to the more traditional flight school textbooks. It really helped the information take hold in my brain, and was a great book to review for the knowledge test.

Austin, Texas, entered the aviation age on October 29, 1911, when Calbraith Perry Rodgers landed his Wright EX Flyer in a vacant field near the present-day intersection of Duval and 45th Streets. Some 3,000 excited people rushed out to see the pilot and his plane, much like the hundreds of thousands who mobbed Charles A. Lindbergh and The Spirit of St. Louis in Paris sixteen years later. Though no one that day in Austin could foresee all the changes that would result from manned flight, people here—as in cities and towns across the United States—realized that a new era was opening, and they greeted it with all-out enthusiasm.

This popularly written history tells the story of aviation in Austin from 1911 to the opening of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in 1999. Kenneth Ragsdale covers all the significant developments, beginning with military aviation activities during World War I and continuing through the barnstorming era of the 1920s, the inauguration of airmail service in 1928 and airline service in 1929, and the dedication of the first municipal airport in 1930. He also looks at the University of Texas's role in training pilots during World War II, the growth of commercial and military aviation in the postwar period, and the struggle over airport expansion that occupied the last decades of the twentieth century. An interesting, informative autobiography of the war years.......2005-02-24

I enjoyed this book, centered in the years of World War II, about one woman's contribution and about the Waves, an auxiliary of the U.S. Navy that was formed at that time. Over 100,000 American women served in the Waves. It is a book similar in tone to Jackie Cochran's biography which told about the creation of the Wasps. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about the Waves, or wishing to read a charming story about a young girl growing up during the depression, coming of age during the war and going on to raise a family in the suburbs.

Entertaining reading for those of us who like to dream.......2000-02-17

Have you ever dreamed of moving in to the home of your dreams in a blissful, secluded location that spoke to your soul and tickled all your senses? Oh, but that's the last chapter. This book, sometimes comically, mostly profoundly chronicles the account of one man's dream to transform a largely unbuildable, but wonderfully located piece of land into his dream. I truly enjoyed it. But, strangely I almost passed it by, because what could I possibly have in common with an architect whose likely approach to such a dream must certainly come not from his heart but from his profession. I was wrong. Small town politics, mother nature's wrath, and more did not deter the author from his dream. And he accomplished it with uncompromised stewardship to the land he loved. I have to admit there were times I was rooting for the home-town folks. But I appreciated the honesty that came across with every word the author wrote. I was only left wishing there was a regional map on the inside cover that marked with a star the exact location of the dream home chronicled in the book. If you're planning to build (especially in Door County, Wisconsin) or even just dreaming, read the book, have a few laughs, sigh a few sighs, and realize that if it's your dream - it's worth it.
