1 out of 5 stars I'm doing something right........2003-06-06

I know I'm doing something right to save money when I felt good about borrowing this book instead of wasting a single penny on it. It should be titled "A Simpleton's Guide to Spending Less".

2 out of 5 stars Save even more by NOT buying this book.......2001-04-24

If you are looking for money-saving advice beyond what any middle class mother already knows then don't bother with this book. You would have to be very profligate in your ways to really get any benefit from the ultra common sense advice Ms. Anahid offers. The book is easy to read and understand. The book is well organized by topic like Travel, Shopping, Automobile, etc. Each chapter is made up of short topics like "Shop around for dry cleaning prices" or "Wash your own car" followed by a short paragraph of supporting text but there is really no meaty "how to" info here; not that there needs to be with such simple ideas. The book is shamefully overpriced for what it offers but if you really don't have a clue on how to stretch a dollar then this book might be worth it. I say save your money and just ask your mom or grandma for ideas on how to save a buck.

Book Description

They are called the Bird Spirits. Each night the humans worship them and leave food as an offering. But Cutter and the Wolfriders know the Bird Spirits are not gods, or even spirits--they are real. Because the giant winged creatures attacked the tribe and carried off four of their kin to the distant spire of Blue Mountain. Now Cutter wants them back. Called "completely enthralling" by Andre Norton, the bestselling Elfquest saga has captivated fans all over the world, growing from a small independent comic into a smash hit series of beautifully illustrated, full color graphic novels. Now the adventures continue in this unforgettable new novel from the creators of the Elfquest universe, Wendy and Richard Pini.

4 out of 5 stars good, but..........2005-03-19

Of course, being an ElfQuest fan, I love pretty much everything ElfQuest, including this book, and so will you if you like ElfQuest in general.

However, this is the paperback/black and white edition-don't buy it! Warp and Marvel comics are coming out with hardback, color editions of I believe all of the ElfQuest storyline, just slightly re-organized from the last hardcover/color edition of their graphic novels that they released- heads up, don't go paying fifty bucks online for someone's used old copy! Unless you're really impatient don't go buying this! The next one to be redone in color and hardback should be #3! They've done 1 and 2!

Although it will be more expensive that way, if you're going to bother getting into something that is primarily a visual medium, why not in color as it was meant to be seen? Nothing "artistic" about this kind of B&W, it just loses.

5 out of 5 stars Wow...this is good!.......2000-12-16

If you are new to the world of elfquest this is the third book in the elfquest line. Before it comes the books Fire and Flight(book #1)and the Forbbiden Grove(book #2). In this book, you meet the Gliders, a group of elves that claims to be the High Ones. You also meet the dark and evil Winnowill, a healer but one which uses her powers for hurting rather then healing.Lastly you learn the secret of the Wolfriders... I won't give away the story but I do reccomend you buy this book for its art, story and feeling...

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......1999-10-13

I thought this was one of the best books in the EQ series, and coming from me thats saying quite a bit, oh and Winnowill is a subject worth thinking about.

5 out of 5 stars This Graphic Novel is the piece that has shaped my life!.......1999-09-17

ElfQuest is a wounderful series for anyone whom reads it. It is full of some of the personal expierences from Wendy and Richard Pini's own life, it contains moral lessons, it has incredible insight, a dynamic story and georgeous artwork, do not pass this book up! IT ROCKS!!!

5 out of 5 stars Only one word needed here........Awesome!.......1999-07-12

This is the third book out of four collections of the original quest which are, in my opinion, works of genius!! The first book is Fire and Flight, the second - The Forbidden Grove, and the last (In my opinion, as the stuff that follows doesn't really seem like Elfquest to me) is the Quest's End. I have been reading those same four books over and over again for 15 years and I feel that they have enriched my life.

When an entire society is told that thinner is better and studies everywhere agree diets don't work, it's time to take a look at the assumptions behind the messages. For better or worse, this happens in Paul Campos' (Jurismania) book The Obesity Myth. Packed full of lengthy discussions of popular studies (particularly the Harvard nurses study), dense chapters run through statistics and conclusions at a breathtaking pace. Campos regularly insists on two points: BMI is basically meaningless, and a variety of media-based sources are contributing to an enormous industry that blends oversized portions with trendy, potentially harmful, diets. He grabs attention to the first claim with early assertions that by BMI standards, Brad Pitt is overweight and George Clooney is obese; more detailed discussion covers how insurance companies developed the BMI tables in their earliest forms and the federal government later tinkered with measurements in a way that accounts for much of the sudden "explosion" in obesity (yes, a BMI chart is included at the end of the book). Repeatedly, Campos rails against media stars whose main qualification is their leanness, questions medical conclusions, and demands that we look at weight as a class issue. Also highlighted is the idea of the diet industry being an extremely powerful political force, which may be at the root of the controversy; the hollering about his sources is likely to be louder than the comments about his accuracy in assessing those sources. As with any highly inflammatory topic, a single book presents only a part of the whole picture--but the myth-busting opinions offered here are an important part of the weight-based discussions. --Jill Lightner

      Book Description

“Campos makes his case against the “fat kills” dogma with unimpeachable evidence. The Obesity Myth should be required reading for every health professional in America. I believe any open-minded person who reads this book will conclude that we've been duped by a pack of self-serving lies. And we cannot get at the truth without first recognizing those lies. The Obesity Myth is a great place to start.” —Glenn A. Gaesser, Ph.D., professor and director, Kinesiology Program, University of Virginia

Is your weight hazardous to your health? According to public-health authorities, 65 percent of us are overweight. Every day, we are bombarded with dire warnings about America's “obesity epidemic.” Close to half of the adult population is dieting, obsessed with achieving an arbitrary “ideal weight.” Yet studies show that a moderately active larger person is likely to be far healthier (and to live longer) than someone who is thin but sedentary. And contrary to what the fifty-billion-dollar-per-year weight-loss industry would have us believe medical science has not yet come up with a way to make people thin.

After years spent scrutinizing medical studies and interviewing leading doctors, scientists, eating- disorder specialists, and psychiatrists, Professor Paul Campos is here to lead the backlash against weight hysteria—and to show that we can safeguard our health without obsessing about the numbers on the scale. But The Obesity Myth is not just a compelling argument, grounded in the latest scientific research; it's also a provocative, wry exposé of the culture that feeds on our self-defeating war on fat. Campos will show:

      * How the nation's most prestigious and trusted media sources consistently misinform the public about obesity
      * What the movie industry's love affair with the “fat suit” tells us about the relationship between racial- and body-based prejudice in America
      * How the skinny elite—with their “supersized” lifestyles and gas-guzzling SUVs—project their anxieties about overconsumption on the poorer and heavier underclass
      * How weight-loss mania fueled the impeachment of Bill Clinton

In this paradigm-busting read, Professor Campos challenges the conventional wisdom regarding the medical, political, and cultural meaning of weight and brings a rational and compelling new voice to America's increasingly irrational weight debate.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding job, Dr. Campos!.......2007-09-19

The "War on Obesity" is actually an attack on fat and fat people. Thank heavens for Paul Campos who clearly and precisely lays out the argument against continuing to fight this war, and the reasons why it was a bad idea to begin with. Is it any coincidence that Americans are fatter than ever and they are also dieting more than ever? I think not.

As a fat aerobics instructor and personal trainer, and as an activist in the movement toward fat acceptance, I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars the diet industry's reality check.......2007-06-19

I had first heard of this book a few years back,
but never got around to reading it until last
night. This book completely changed my view
of my body, the diet industry, and America in
      general.

The best parts of the book talk about how the diet
industry plays on people's insecurities, in order
to make money. Does the pharmaceutical companies
really care about the average American? No.

Unlike most diet commercials and products, Campos
uses hard-hitting facts to hammer home his main
point: that by yo-yo dieting, Americans are playing
a dangerous game with their bodies.

Kudos to Campos for destroying the stereotypical
notion that fat people cannot be fit. The correlation
between Bill Clinton, weight, and his impeachment
      is also very, very interesting.

This book is recommended for anyone, fat or thin, who
is ready to make peace with their bodies and tired
of buying the hype that fuels the diet industry.

4 out of 5 stars Tells it Like it Is.......2007-06-17

If you want to see how the government and doctors and others are trying to convince us how the majority of us are killing ourselves with fat, read this book.

Fat fit people are healthier than skinny unfit people.

Read the book and learn more.

5 out of 5 stars They have been lying to us again........2006-05-09

This is a very interesting book. It is not a book that will tell you how to become a normal eater, although it is obvious that he not only knows about normal eating trends, but approves of them. The book is mainly about how the diet industry has been lying to us about the obesity research out there, and how 95% or more of all diets result in people not just gaining it all back, mostly very quickly, but gaining back more than they lost in the first place. He also says that the height/weight charts are not reasonable and that the whole BMI thing is a fraud.

His main focus is that a person who is overweight, or even obese, is not necessarily unhealthy. If they are active physically, they can be more healthy than someone who is very thin and sedentary. He also thinks that the point where the height/weight charts say a person is overweight, and the second place where they are supposed to be obese, are set way too low.

And then he had to admit he had been losing weight the whole time he was writing, and that it ended up being a substantial amount of weight. He knows that part of it was that he began running in races, so he was training for competition for the first time in his life. I think he also began normal eating techniques, and what he calls healthy eating. Not a weight loss diet, but a diet for health that most people would not lose weight on.

Most of the normal eating books go into some of the material in this book in an attempt to explain why we need to give diets up, but they don't have the room for it in this detail. He after all, used 250 pages to tell his story.

      5 out of 5 stars Eye Opening.......2006-03-22

This book made me think in a whole new way about todays culture. I didn't agree with every thing in it but it made me open my eyes to so much that I think it is a must read for anyone no matter what their size.

          2 out of 5 stars If you're veg*an, don't bother.......2006-07-06

I was somehow under the impression that this book might be good for vegetarians and vegans. Whoops! Almost every page details how much the couple loves various animal-derived items. Yes, they recommend fresh fruits and veggies, and yes, they point out in the vegetarian chapter (entitled "Where's the Beef") that cholesterol, found only in animal products, can contribute to clogged arteries and maybe ED, but that weak message is overshadowed by veg-hostile recipes in almost every other chapter, especially the one that precedes the veg chapter, entitled "Caveman's Delight." Sigh. And Ellen, who is a dietitian, loses credibility when she uses the terms pesco-vegetarian and pollo-vegetarian. For the record, if one eats fish and/or chicken, s/he is NOT a vegetarian of any type. And while the veg chapter mentions fruitarianism, raw foodism has completely passed them over.

I guess I'm disappointed more than anything else. I was hoping for recipes to cook for my boyfriend and me. I will say I like the idea of cooking together (which sadly is not practical if you have a tiny kitchen) and truly enjoying the food you eat, but that's somewhat common knowledge. And checking someone's food preferences before cooking for them is also common sense.

An earlier version of American Musicians appeared in 1986. Now the author has added 17 essays to the collection, and the result is a highly personal encyclopedia of jazz history, written with Whitney Balliett's trademark lyricism. Few critics can describe a piece of music with this kind of delicacy and precision. And the comments that Balliett elicits from his subjects are themselves worth the price of admission. Here, for example, pianist John Lewis goes right to the heart of jazz improvisation, and gives us a hint of what lays behind it: "When I take a solo, I try not to look at my fingers. It distracts me from music-making . . . I think about other things, even other music. If you break through those mere rules, destroy them, that's good, and it can become quite a marvelous experience. It's not just sadness or joy, it's something beyond that, perhaps exhilaration, but that's rare."

              Book Description

When Whitney Balliett's American Musicians first appeared in the fall of 1986, the acclaim it received was universal. Leonard Feather, writing in The Los Angeles Times, said "no other writer now living can write with comparable grace and equal enthusiasm about everyone from Jack Teagarden and Art Tatum to Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman." And Bruce Cook in The New Leader called the book "the quintessential Whitney Balliett, the cream of the cream, a collection that leaves no doubt about his strength." Now greatly expanded with sixteen new essays, American Musicians II remains a superb introduction to the giants of jazz, or as Balliett himself calls it, "a highly personal encyclopedia, a series of close accounts of how a beautiful music grew, flourished, and (possibly) began the long trek back to its native silences." Breathtaking in its scope, the book features Balliett's singular portraits of jazz greats who have shaped this uniquely American tradition from its earliest days to the present, from inimitable innovators like Joe "King" Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton, to swing-era mainstays Fats Waller and Lester Young, to avant-garde pioneers such as Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman. We are treated to profiles of Pee Wee Russell, Red Allen, Earl Hines, and Mary Lou Williams, written when they were at the height of their powers; reconstructions of the lives of Art Tatum, Coleman Hawkins, Jack Teagarden, Zoot Sims, and Dave Tough; quick but indelible glimpses into the daily (or nocturnal) lives of Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus; and vivid portrayals of such modern masters as Red Norvo, Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones, Art Farmer, Michael Moore, and Tommy Flanagan. This new edition adds essays on such major musicians as Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, George Shearing, and Paul Desmond. In the forty years that he has written for The New Yorker, Whitney Balliett has earned the reputation as America's foremost jazz critic. The late Philip Larkin described him as a "writer who brings jazz journalism to the verge of poetry." Alistair Cook wrote that he is, "without a rival in sight, the most literate and knowledgeable living writer on jazz." And Gene Lees called him "one of the most graceful essayists in the English language on any subject." Now, with the second edition of American Musicians in hand, music lovers can experience Balliett's peerless observations on the jazz scene, as he takes you into the hearts and minds of jazz's great practitioners.

1 out of 5 stars He Always Writes in Perfect Tune.......2007-03-22

I have been a musician and writer for over 50 years, and glory of glories, in Whitney Balliett's book, American Musicians II, he achieves perfect pitch in his prose when capturing the heart and soul of what music is, and the men and women who make it happen. His stories pulse with an energy that is seemingly boundless. Here is a man who has somehow gotten inside these legendary figures, some of whom I knew and many of whom I've heard in person. Balliett lets you listen through his own ears, giving you a guided tour not only of the notes on the page, and then as they take flight in the air, but also of the fascinating daily lives of these gifted individuals. I can't play like Art Tatum, but Balliett lets me sit beside him as he lays down his "perfect storm" of notes, at the end of which is this huge rainbow whose image we carry in our mind forever. If you love good music and good writing, you've come to the perfect book. Balliet is no longer with us, but he has left us a legacy that should be treasured for 32 bars unto infinity. 5 out of 5 stars Whitney Balliett's elegant solos........2001-02-15

If Whitnet Balliett were a musician, he'd probably be someone like Teddy Wilson, whose sometimes spare but dancing lines were always distinct, no matter the context. Balliett's musings on the more important jazz musicians, published originally in The New Yorker, are models of criticism that never betray his love and admiration for the music. It is unlikely that anyone will ever write as well as he has about America's most important contribution to the arts.
