There's nothing more frightening than witnessing a child's asthma attack, listening to her wheeze and cough and fight for every breath--and sharing her panic. Fortunately, pharmaceutical advances have resulted in a whole new class of drugs that prevents or relieves asthma flare-ups. But do you want your child on drugs, with their potential short- and long-term side effects? Besides, asthma drugs treat the symptoms without treating the underlying condition. Are there alternatives that can lessen an asthmatic child's drug dependency? Yes, say authors Steven J. Bock, Kenneth Bock, and Nancy P. Bruning. "It is our belief that asthma rates continue to soar because of our increasingly toxic environment," they write. "Our children are assaulted from every direction with indoor and outdoor air pollution, poor food, and stress." The cumulative toxicity makes children more susceptible to diseases. In this book the authors present a natural asthma program to complement your child's conventional care and help to reduce asthma attacks and drug dependency. This includes reducing asthma triggers (including advice for "saying goodbye to Fluffy"); eating a cleaner, more nourishing diet (emphasizing plant foods); taking supplements, herbs, and homeopathic remedies; and learning to cope with emotional stress. The book ends with three case studies of children who used the program in various ways and dramatically improved their health. --Joan Price

5 out of 5 stars Powerful information for parents!.......2000-06-11

This book helped our family put the brakes on the out-of-control rollercoaster ride of asthma. "Natural Relief for Your Child's Asthma" empowers parents with page after page of specific instructions on how to reduce your child's dependence on medication by understanding the limits of conventional medicine, finding and avoiding triggers, using food as a healer, using supplements to strengthen your child and using alternative mind-body medicine to enhance your child's well-being. While the authors have lots of great information about how to reduce dependence on medicine over time, they aren't zealots who encourage you to turn your back on conventional medicine. The real power that comes from this book is that now, when I go to see my child's asthma specialist, I can ask informed questions about my son's condition. I'm no longer a note taker jotting down what medicines my child should take when. I can encourage my doctor to challenge us to make dietary and lifestyle changes to detoxify our child's environment that he might not otherwise have mentioned assuming that we would prefer the "easy" way out of finding stronger and stronger medicines to rescue our child. I strongly encourage any parent of a child with asthma to read this book!

          Book Description

Cutback management is a way of life for most public and private sector organizations today, and the factors leading to its presence are expected to be felt well into the 1990's and beyond. At the same time, organizations are being faced with a changed internal culture where employees want and need to be involved in decisions that affect them. The author, who has been at the forefront of assisting organizations in effectively managing both external and internal change, explores the trends impacting state and local governments in the next decade and beyond, describes the cutback management environment that policy and decision makers face, and lays out effective approaches to deal with this environment from the bottom of the organization upward. In this manner, organizations that identify techniques to improve revenues and reduce costs can find lasting solutions that are accepted at all organizational levels. After reviewing the 15 major trends expected to impact state and local governments during the 1990's and beyond, the author describes the cutback management environment being faced by most state and local governments. He then describes in detail how to set a direction to address the cutback management environment through the application of strategic planning and goes on to describe how to organize around critical success factors in order to focus resources on achievement of the organizational mission in light of external and internal environmental factors. He explores various techniques for improving employee productivity, ranging from the use of new technology to better management systems to various types of employee involvement. He then discusses the importance of values in the achievement of a shared organizational vision and describes various employee involvement processes that can be used to secure buy-in by employees at all levels where organizational changes are underway. Among other issues explored in depth are the use of matrix management to improve productivity in a project-oriented environment and contingency planning to deal with unforeseen events. The book culminates with a description of how to use strategic management as a day-to-day tool for effective bottom-up cutback management, and provides real-life case situations of how state and local governments are effectively dealing with the cutback and involvement processes. This book is aimed at state and local government policy and decision makers.

          Book Description

Throughout history human beings have formed communities spontaneously with residences constructed haphazardly. Today a new type of community is emerging--one planned from the start regarding housing location, style, and governance. These Community Associations (CAs) have increased in number from 500 in 1960 to 205,000 in 1998. This book explores the issues surrounding this housing innovation and provides a history of community associations and their membership organization, the Community Associations Institute (CAI). The book explores the process of trial and error in the design of CAs and how the CAI was set up to help them work. It opens with a consideration of the economics of land, housing, and community associations; explores the social, intellectual, legal background for CAs; and surveys their development in the United States. After considering the FHA's role, the book focuses on the development of the CAI .

The research and authorship of this book were funded by a grant from the Land Economics Foundation of LAI. It began as a way to organize the papers of Byron R. Hanke, a member of LAI, whose work as Chief Land Planner for the Federal Housing Administration, and authorship of The Homes Association Handbook, published by ULI, the Urban Land Institute, and Planned Unit Development with a Homeowners Association, Federal Housing Administration Land Planning Bulletin 6, and founding member of the Community Associations Institute, were the hallmark efforts that started the rapid growth of housing development where a homeowners, condominium, or other forms of common interest community associations were used to own and manage common areas and facilities.

Community Associations traces the historical roots of common property from medieval feudalism, the New England town, various communal and utopians ideas and examples to earliest contemporary prototypes in England and the United States. It then explores the decades after W.W.II, when rapid suburban growth made the provision of common areas and facilities a desirable and much needed part of large scale communities that outstripped the capabilities of the public sector to provide parks and ballfields, swimming pools, other recreation facilities, and, perhaps most critically, common open space to preserve woodlands, streams, historic structures, that were envision by land planners and developers as a better living environment that could be created if there were a means to commonly and privately own and maintain such features.

Unlike most previous literature that advocate the use of community associations, this book seeks to dispassionately explore the rise of community associations, their economic impact on communities, their strengths and weaknesses, and their evolution from a means to ensure maintenance and operation of common ownership elements into a private governance system that both protects the common interests of property owners and restricts their freedom of action beyond those restrictions imposed by local, state, and national government.

An invaluable resource for all professionals in the related fields of land economics.

            Book Description

The life of Bob Gibson, the unsung father of commercially popular folk music, whose influence is still being felt in today's music, is celebrated in "Bob Gibson: I Come For To Sing", by Carole Bender and Bob Gibson. Included with the book is Bob Gibson's CD "Stops Along the Way".

The book is autobiographical as much as possible, but his importance to his contemporaries is emphasized by original contributions by such legends as Shel Silverstein, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Peter Yarrow, Tom Paxton, Hamilton Camp, Gordon Lightfoot, Glenn Yarbrough, George Carlin and many others.

Bob Gibson is largely responsible for the revival of folk music in the late 50s and early 60s, as well as its elevation to a more widely-accepted popularity througout the country. In addition to his own musical contributions, Bob also wrote or co-wrote many of the more popular folk songs of the era, some of which were recorded by Peter, Paul & Mary, Simon & Garfunkel, The Byrds, and many others. His influence, his music, and his impeccable mastering of the 12-string guitar influenced an entire generation of performers.

This book is a tribute to Gibson's contribution to music, as well as a heartfelt tribute to the man himself, exploring his life and his career, the triumphs as well as the trials, including a dark look into his battle with drug addiction. Additional features include the most comprehensive Bob Gibson discography ever compiled, Gibson's complete song-writing textbook, the script of his play, "The Courtship of Carl Sandburg", numerous photos and illustrations, and of course, the CD "Stops Along the Way."

Proceeds from the sale of this book through this website go to the Bob Gibson Trust.

5 out of 5 stars "No! Not the Baseball Pitcher!".......2000-03-14

My intent here is to convince as many as possible to read this biographical book about someone of whom they probably have never heard.

There is certainly nothing simple about my endeavor, just as there is nothing simple about the subject. He was far more than just a folk singer. He had as much charisma as Elvis, as much innovative talent as Chuck Berry, as much potential as Buddy Holly, and as phenomenal as it sounds, somehow managed to stay hidden in the shadows. He never achieved any wide spread general recognition.

The author recognized the importance of her subject's contributions, the scope of his talent, the scale of his influence, and with probing tenacity shone her light into those shadows, so we the reader might discover a true American troubadour, Bob Gibson.

The book paints the picture of an artist who reached the zenith of his profession, a world class entertainer, a man who literally changed forever the entire genre of folk music. To paint this portrait the author delineates the man in the shadows with the words and stories of his friends, fans, family and of course the musicians, singers, and songwriters of the 50s and 60s whom Bob Gibson affected.

Only after you read the book will you understand why she chose to tell the story in this manner. Simply put, of the many talents Bob possessed, his most amazing attribute was the positive manner in which he affected virtually everyone whose life he touched. The dichotomy was he still somehow managed, in his own enigmatic way, to remain virtually unknown.

Without this book, Bob Gibson, might never have received his final encore, one he richly deserves and one we readers can be thankful that the author provided. The amount of effort it took to compile this heretofore "untold story," could only have been powered by the energy derived from working on a true, "labor-of-love."

Like the dichotomy that was Bob Gibson's life, this book will make you happy and sad. Sad that you weren't aware of him earlier, and happy that the author persevered in her quest to illuminate and thus honor this dynamic individual. This book is Bob Gibson's last spotlight.

P.S. Better than apple pie the book comes a la mode. Tucked neatly into the inside back cover of the book there is a full length compilation CD of some of Bob's best known music and songs. Get it and enjoy the story and music of a little known legend.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read with a bonus!.......2000-01-14

This was a very interesting book for me. I didn't know much about Bob Gibson, had heard some songs but hadn't really paid much attention to them. I found the book to be well written and most importantly, to me, it made me wish that I had been more aware of Bob Gibson's music. The book makes you feel like you knew him and that you cared about him. The CD has some great songs and it is especially interesting to listen to it while reading the book. I think everyone should own a copy of this book!

5 out of 5 stars Finally Someone Tells Bob's Story!.......2000-01-14

I have to say I am SO happy to see someone tell Bob's story and bring to life the credibility and praise that he so righteously earned. Having been a loyal fan of folk music since it's early days, I have known how much influence he has had on the evolution of folk music throughout the sixties, seventies, and even today. Yet I have been consistently amazed at how many people are not aware of this. We hear all about Peter, Paul & Mary, Joan Baez, and other household names, but Bob's name goes largely unrecognized, even though he personally influenced all of these people...a fact which is frequently made evident by the many contributions to this book by other artists. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone with an appreciation of folk music, whether you know of Bob Gibson or not, you will wonder why someone didnt write this book sooner.

3 out of 5 stars A Difficult Topic that deserved more.......2001-08-07

It's hard to know just what kind of writer Rachel Sarna Araten is. She is obviously intrigued enough by her subject to have written this slender volume as a non-fiction. Given the polemic and very complex subject of kidnapping and forced conversion by the Catholic Church, the book is underdeveloped and reads more like an outline awaiting a 600 page book. Araten purportedly had done her research, even having access to family members and photographs. But one never senses the real people behind this story nor the wrenching psychological factors that such a catacalysmic situation would create. The personal data is glossed over. Most confusing is the point where Michalina's brother learns of the whereabouts of his sister through her nephew. It is unclear how Michalina's nephew would have come to know his aunt's original name, since she had not used it for over 40 years. Despite these literary shortcomings, this is a compelling fast read but only because of the subject matter and not for the way that it was written. I was entertained by this book and the quips and cartoons were fun. However, I was hoping to find something more educational and was disappointed. I'll keep looking.

                  1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2004-08-28

I agree with Landess in the preface. This book is poorly researched. It doesn't show us the depth or breath of the man. It would not even be poor historial fiction and is horrid as a biography. It's one strong point is Tate's abilitity to show the Southern feeling on their state rights being violated; along with the comparison of Indian rights being viloent by the North.

By reading the book: Stonewall Jackson, by Allen Tate, I have furthered my belief that this was a man of great piety, heroism, chivallry, and freedom. He fought for all these things in his time, yet in our time freedom and the fight to preserve it and the Homeland seem to be of the most importance. The fight for freedom has always been an American ideal, and Tate did an excellent job in depicting how one man committed his whole life to it during the War of Northern Aggression. I stongly reccomend this book to all who desire to reap the truth, and who hold dear the Homeland.

In reading the book Stonewall Jackson, by Allen Tate, I have furthered my belief that this was a man of piety, heroism, chivallry, and a true champion of American values. That is to say, General Jackson was a fighter for freedom and the homeland: something which is highly regarded in today's day and age. Tate expressed this idea even when he wrote it 76 years ago. Therefore, I strongly reccomend this book to all who value the American ideal: the fight for freedom.

4 out of 5 stars Good History about a Good Man.......1999-02-13

Allen Tate wrote "Stonewall Jackson" in 1927 with the intent of restoring some historical reality to the fading memory of the War for Southern Independence. He accomplished his goal, but the book seems better in retrospect as a whole than it did while reading it page by page. Tate used what to me was an odd, choppy style of writing that slightly complicated the story he was telling. He clearly admired Jackson, and after reading his book my admiration and knowldge of Jackson have improved. Stonewall Jackson is one of America's great heroes for good reason. Even members of the Union Army cheered him when the opportunity presented itself near Fredericksburg. As Tate points out, Jackson was a man of principle on and off the battlefield. From his impoverished childhood to his ever-improving performance at West Point there was no way to foretell the height of fame Jackson would gain in the War for Southern Independence. His performance in the War with Mexico was limited to garrison duty for the most part. When in battle he distinguished himself, but other officers had shown more brightly for a longer period of time in more battles. Tate reveals the eccentricities of Jackson in subtle ways that leave you wondering what was going on in Jackson's head. He clearly baffled the forces sent against him in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, but many of his own soldiers were equally baffled. It took some time for his subordinates to develop a deep and abiding respect for General Jackson, but after he lead them to numerous victories against superior forces the bond was established that lasted until his untimely death. One of the great contradictions in Jackson's life was his steadfast Christian beliefs contrasted with his unrelenting will to destroy the enemy on the battlefield. For example, Tate mentions an exchange between Jackson and his chief surgeon when the surgeon inquired, "How shall we ever cope with the overwhelming numbers of the enemy?" After a long pause Jackson replied, "Kill them, sir! Kill every man." It was that strength of will that helped make Jackson the hero that he was and is. His loss at Chancellorsville to "friendly fire" was one more nail in the coffin of the Confederacy. It is, perhaps, inevitable that one should speculate about events at Gettysburg had General Lee had his "right arm" leading a Corps. This book gives the most plausible answer to what Jackson meant at the moment of his death when he said, "Let's cross over the river and rest in the shade of the trees." Curiously, the answer is at the start of the book, not the end. Allen Tate wrote a good book about a great man that is well worth reading.

                              Book Description

Who was Aleister Crowley? Magus, poet, sexual athlete, mountaineer, traitor, drug fiend, and Prophet of a New Aeon — he has been described as all these things. Dubbed "The Wickedest Man in the World" by the British press, Crowley and his story have captured the imagination of occultists, rock stars — including The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, who included his portrait on the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band — free spirits, and science fiction aficionados for decades.

Compiled from Sandy Robertson's extensive personal collection of Crowleyana, The Illustrated Beast includes a short biography, black-and-white photographs of Crowley and his contemporaries, excerpts from his writings, and commentary on the Wanderer of the Waste.

From his paradoxical childhood to his stormy involvement with The Golden Dawn, from his adventurous travels and published works to his controversial Italian Abbey and lifelong heroin addiction, this scrapbook offers readers a glimpse of the man, his works, and his lasting impact on the occult.

                              5 out of 5 stars MR. CROWLEY.......2002-11-20

I ran across this book while doing a search and just had to buy it as it's been many years since I've read anything by or about Crowley. When it arrived with several other books, I set it aside and promptly forgot about it. While watching Hellraiser II on DVD last week, I noticed that the Beast's picture (in Golden Dawn regalia) kept popping up at the Doctor's house and it reminded me of this book. As soon as I finished my current book, I started in on this one. It was chock full of photos, illustrations, and stories that that I'd never seen before. I enjoyed the reprinting of the rare story Big Game from his World War I era writing. I especially liked the section that showed the different guises (and disguises) of Crowley over the years. When David Bowie is mentioned later as a one of the rock stars influenced by the Beast, I wondered how much of his frequent reinventing of himself was Crowley inspired. All in all, a nice reintroduction to the Beast book for my collection. My only gripe is that none of the popular photos of Crowley are reproduced here in whole except for their use in commercial endeavors (magazine and album covers) nor is the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper album cover. A minor quibble about an excellent book on "The Wickedest Man In The World". 'Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole Of The Law'.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-05-26

This is a great book about an Indian leader the history books do not always talk about. If you enjoy western history, this should be on your shelf.

5 out of 5 stars A window into the life of a Great War Chief.......1999-02-02

If you enjoy reading about the Kiowa tribe you'll love this book. It provides an interesting insight into the life of Chief Satanta (White Bear), his family and all those involved trying to bring peace between the Kiowas and the white man. It is also very informative about the Native Indian culture. My fastest read yet!
