Supply Chain Architecture by William Walker is a different kind of book. It looks at how to make a Supply Chain Network effective by developing a high level conceptual principle, and, then drilling down to the practices that should be adopted to operationalize the principle.
Take an example of the Vocalize principle. This principle covers the synchronization of Supply with Demand. The book describes various techniques to improve this process including, how to the Push-Pull boundary is used in different manufacturing configurations, and, how operational control is established in various manufacturing systems such as Manufacturing Resource Planning, Vendor Management, Kanban and Synchronization.
The book invariably details how to optimize the technique in actual practice. It is written by a practitioner for practitioners
It is a book to be read and absorbed. I have found it very useful and have used sections of it in a Supply Chain course I teach at Polytechnic University in New York

"Supply chain management" is becoming a meaningless cliche. This textbook spells out- significant (as opposed to occasional/nominal) trading partners, importance of cash flow & lead time- in standard APICS terminology. Introduces parameters for outsourcing manufacturing & logistics. Up-to-date, compared with many logistics tomes.

Hard to find, keep it on your Library.......2002-04-23
The content is very clear, the exercises are complete and there are lots of examples. I specially like the cases based on real businesses. I used this book with an Advanced Finance class of my MBA program.
For those who like modeling there is a section dedicated to LP, IP and GP, very well explained but no Excel or LINDO solutions though.
If you are one that have fun with decision sciences, you can go ahead and solve them using solver or LINDO.
Overall, I recommend it for those looking to keep a good Capital Budgeting book.

A Confederate soldier's experience--well worth reading........2004-01-03
This book is the story of a Confederate lower-ranking soldier's wartime experiences during the Civil War. Watkins wrote this a considerable time after the war, and he admits that some of his memories may have faded, some of his facts may be wrong, because after all, what he is really serving up is a private's perspective of great events, which tend to focus on remarkably different issues than a general or a historian might relate--often a worm's eye view of things.
In reality, Watkins is too modest, because this book is a sensitive, gritty, honest, and insightful look at the experiences of a Confederate soldier who participated in some of the heaviest fighting of the Civil War, or indeed American history. Without saying so, we learn that Watkins and his fellow Confederates were not fighting to preserve slavery and very few of them could have cared less about the issue. While this was undoubtedly the underlying cause of the Civil War (the slavery issue) the Confederate rank and file did not see it that way--they were fighting for what they believed was their right of self-government--"Southern Rights." And in the end, they believed they were fighting for their homes. This comes shining through Watkins' memoirs.
Watkins' writing features a whimsical humor combined with a gritty authenticity that in my opinion gives a truly valuable insight into the daily life and wartime experiences of a real fighting man. We've all read about the high casualty rates in the Civil War infantry. Watkins lived with this fact, and his various accounts of men fighting and dying to his right and left, day after day, indeed year after year, drive home the fact that this was a deadly struggle, and a catastrophe for those caught up in it. Watkins' matter-of-fact descriptions of his battles, his encounters with many other aspects of the war (the horrible situations in some of the hospitals, for example), and many other things make this book not only a pleasure to read, but a valuable contribution to history.
Ken Burns' "The Civil War" drew heavily on Watkins' book, and rightly so. Watkins' memoirs provide wonderful insight not only about what the war was like, but also what the Confederate soldier was like.

Good for all ages.......1999-12-07
This inspiring and fun-to-read book profiles 23 Ohioans who have exhibited outstanding character and courage. Some are quite famous, others not at all. Among the famous are the Wright Brothers, Tecumseh, Harriett Beecher Stowe, Toni Morrison, and Jesse Owens. Among the not-so-famous, but should be, are Jacob Parrott, Mary Ann Bickerdyke and Janarius MacGahan.
I put this book at the top of my Christmas giving list for these reasons: 1. All the stories make you appreciate the sacrifices and character of the individuals profiled ("Could I ever be that brave?"). 2. All the stories are well-researched. I thought I knew about all there was interesting to know about some of these Ohioans, but the book taught me otherwise. 3. It's written in story-telling fashion, making for a good read-aloud book for the family and an interesting read for the junior and senior high school set. 4. It well represents the diverse interests and ethnic backgrounds of Ohioans.
