A Moving Memoir From a "Mud Marine".......2007-04-16

During World War II, thousands of young men fought and died in the steaming jungles of the Pacific islands. Many of these men were only teenagers. Some used false birth certificates so they could join the armed forces early. Despite their age, these men developed a bond among themselves unlike any other. These men trained and fought together side by side, each willing to give up his life for a fellow Marine without questions asked. Lawrence F. Kirby was one of these men, and he re-creates his wartime experiences in this excellent collection of personal memoirs.

Kirby joined the Marines at age eighteen and trained at Parris Island, South Carolina. After surviving the rigors of boot camp, he then transferred to Camp LeJeune for advanced infantry training. The next stop was Omaha, Nebraska and finally on to California. During these stops, Kirby polished his fighting skills until, in his own words, he could kill a man with his bare hands. Friendships were developed along the way that lasted for many years.

Kirby served in three island campaigns during the Pacific war: Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima. Each presented different challenges, but Kirby managed to survive and return home after the war. Kirby's job was as an infantry scout. He was charged with listening for enemy movement and blazing trails for other groups to follow. He was wounded several times, but he somehow managed to survive.

In his book, Kirby describes several moments; some funny, others poignant. For instance, an entire chapter is devoted to a conversation he held with another Marine whose name Kirby didn't even know. The Marine ended up dying in Kirby's arms later in the battle. Another chapter describes Kirby's first encounter with an enemy soldier. Kirby ended up killing him, but his reaction was one of grief and sorrow. He ended up cradling the dead Japanese soldier in his arms, weeping for him and his family. Some of the lighter moments consisted of booby-trapping a latrine and carousing with his friends

One common theme expressed throughout the book is the unique bond shared by the Marines. Each man was willing to die for his buddies, and the friendship formed between these men was deeper than most other kinds of friendship. There were times when a young soldier threw himself on a live hand grenade to save his fellow comrades, or risk saving a wounded comrade under heavy enemy fire. These men never questioned their actions, they simply reacted, and knew that others would do the same for them. In Kirby's words, he saw each Marine as a brother in a common struggle, and each man was dedicated to helping every other man to survive.

This is an excellent book. Lawrence Kirby does a wonderful job of describing what life was like as a Marine fighting in the Pacific. He covers the full spectrum; from funny pranks on fellow Marines to holding a buddy in his arms and watching him die. There is great humor, but there is also great terror. Kirby experienced both, and he does a masterful job of describing each emotion in his book.

I give this fine book my highest recommendation. Marines shared a unique bond, and Lawrence Kirby describes that bond. The love for one another and the mutual support and inspiration were what enabled these brave men to sustain during the horrible campaigns of the Pacific war.

Not your typical war book.......2004-04-09

The is a really a lovely collection of short stories told by a real "mud marine". Each stories covers part of Mr. Kirby's war-time experience, from hilarious incidents to heartbreaking events. Finish one chapter laughing, the next with tears in your eyes. Moreover, the tone of this book is less gung-ho shoot 'em up story telling, but more of a tribute to fallen brothers, and the transformation of a young wise-cracking kid into a man sickened to this day by the concept of war. Terrific details of life during the battles on Iwo Gima and Guam.

Very Helpful.......2007-08-03

I passed this exam after studying with only this book. There were a few errors in it, and some of the information is slightly out-of-date (e.g., the IRA contribution limits listed are a few years out of date). Overall, however, I found it to be very useful and well-organized.

Pretty good guide, not great.......2007-01-23

This guide provided me with a lot of useful information, however, there are some things on the test that could not be answered from this guide. I really like how options and bonds are documented. However, I did not like how market regulations and account set-ups are documented. Good luck if you're testing!

Errors on test exams.......2007-01-18

Generally good book, but be careful of errors. There are a number of errors in the text and in exam questions, for instance question 224 (exam 1), answer given is A, but correct answer is C by its own description.

I hope this wasn't a real test at one point.....

Errors in text as well.....
Example: Stop Limit Orders become Limit orders, not stop orders. i.e. will never become market orders....See SEC definition.

A head above.......2007-01-02

I used this book as a supplement to an online course, to fill gaps and to obtain a different prospective on the subject matter. I loved that it has no "water" in it, rather it is straight to the point, reducing study time, with great "Exam Topic" alerts and an excellent post-chapter summaries, which I used for the "morning of", last minute refresher. The books has good graphics, charts, appropriately used highlights (for good layout and text flow), making studying a breeze. I passed after 20 days of studying with 89% (possibility of attaining the same result is not implied or guaranteed hereby :) .)

Good Study Guide.......2006-03-28

This book was very helpful in preparing for the Series 7. My employer is providing a more detailed and comprehensive study program, but this book was a very nice additional prep guide. It covers the material that will be tested, has practice exams, and helpful tips for the test itself. I'm glad I bought it.

You get what you pay for........2007-09-02

I chose this particular real estate exam book because it was less expensive than the others the store had. When I took the first exam, I found out why. One more than one question, the answers were incorrect. That is, the correct answer would be A, but when you chose A, the screen would say, "Incorrect! The answer is B!" and then *state that the correct answer was the text of A*. Clearly this was a typographical error, whoever put it together typed in the wrong letter for the answer, but they really should have checked it better than that. There were also a few questions where instead of the usual explanation, there would only be a couple of words; one example, from a question about the Real Estate Commission, said simply, "The Real Estate". Apparently the people who put this together occasionally just forgot to type in the entire answer!

There are many CD-ROM books out there to help you study for this exam. Use a different one.

Fan of the bands or not, this is a great book!.......1998-09-04

I'm not a big fan of Joy Division or New Order. However, a friend of mine who is demanded that I read this book. I can't thank him enough. From chapter one, Flowers' almost poetic prose immediately engulfs you in the angst ridden world of the doomed Curtis and his persevering cohorts. Although Flowers' passion for the two bands almost leaps of the page, he somehow manages to convey such insight into their world that you would swear he must have been one of them (rather than a Seattle music journalist according to the author's bio). I'm very much looking forward to his next book, whatever its subject.

Great photos, some interesting info on the band.......1998-02-22

This book contains some good factual info and some really great color and b/w photographs of both Joy Division and New Order. The book describes and reviews every New Order-related album, single, and release up until Revenge's Gun World Porn EP. For some reason, the author felt compelled to sprinkle his own personal opinions and interpretations of songs throughout the whole book (many of which are questionable at best). The conclusion seemed like it was hastily written at the last moment (kind of like the author was wrapping up a high school book report). This is the only NO/JD book I've read, so I can't compare it to any others. It's quite a good book, though, and I'm glad to have read it.

A good book for New Order fans.......1998-02-04

I loved the section on New Order, since I've started listening to their music last year. I wanted to know more about the group than their music. This book is great for New Order fans, especially now that the band is gone and the end result is Peter Hook with Monaco and Bernard Sumner with Electronic.

Better information on New Order than Joy Division........1997-11-21

I have listened to Joy Division since before Ian Curtis died, have all the original vinyl, etc., and I must say I was a little disappointed in this book. The New Order coverage is pretty good, but I picked up the book more for Joy Division. Both bands' names appear on the cover, yet the J.D. coverage ends on p.38 of a 127 page book! What information there is on Joy Division is good, although the author has a habit of interpreting lyrics and claiming to know exactly what they meant without explaining whether he's speaking his own opinion or has information to back him up. In closing, I would recommend this book only for New Order fans looking for a little more "Insight" into Joy Division. For Joy Division fans, I recommend looking at one of the other Joy Division books.

The many voices of Jerusalem.......2000-01-27

I found "Jerusalem Mosaic" to be facinating reading. The diversity of the population of this intriguing city was mirrored by teens from many backgrounds who are interviewed in this book. Many views were passionately experssed by the young adults portrayed. It was interesting to learn of cultures vastly different from what is familiar to me. I found the openness and honesty of these teens refreshing. I could feel the passion that burns in many of them. The authors present the youths' differences in up-bringing, cultural background, religion (or lack of it), and political views without distorting the words that these young adults used. (The recommended age is 9-12 years, however I feel that this very important book is also appropriate for adults of all ages.)
