Great Resource.......2000-06-03
London just loves this great book. It is such a wonderful resource for them. We are racking up our fed ex cost by sending it back and forth between offices. Great tool if you are in the industry.
Book Description
This book describes the many benefits of index mutual funds. Yet it also provides a framework for understanding why indexing should be the investment strategy for any investor today. This includes an explanation of why Morningstar, Value Line, stockbrokers, investment gurus, the financial media and others so often fail investors. The book also explores the role of index funds in the context of asset allocation and portfolio diversification.
Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2007-07-12
This book is a classic on the use of index mutual funds to achieve the performance of the market. Scott is a lawyer and has mastered all facets of investing. He is an expert recognized by the courts in law suits where the defendant has violated his fiduciary duty. After reading this book you will be convinced that passive techniques offer the best method to achieve superior returns.
Piscaqua Research in a study covering the period 1987-96 found that only 10 out of 145 major pension funds, or just seven percent, out performed a portfolio consisting of a simple 60%/40% mix of the S&P 500 index and the Lehman Bond index respectively.
Or is it logical I ask for you to believe that you can predict which actively managed funds will out perform, or are you overconfident of your skills? If you are trying to find the great fund managers who will out perform in the future ask yourself: what am I going to do differently in terms of identifying the future winning fund managers, than did the pension plans and their advisors? And if you are not going to something different what logic is there in playing a game at which others with superior resources have consistently failed?
If you a really serious in finding an investment technique that will provide you with reasonable return with less risk I suggest the following little book. This is a little book that I have written and contains the essential of how to invest. Just click on the title to find the book. How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 Different Stocks-Pay no Commission The Investor's Cookbook
Excellent Review of Pro's and Con's of Index Funds.......2005-12-28
As an excellent review of index fund investing, I give this book an A.
Simon's book was one of the first books about index fund investing. He published this book prior to the index fund 1999 peak in popularity.
Simon points out that institutional investors put about 35% of their money into index funds versus actively managed funds. At the time he wrote his book, about 6% of individual investor's stock money went into index funds. In 2005, it has risen to about 10% of individual money in index funds.
He also pointed out that the smartest people with the most resources for choosing good investments choose index funds. TIAA-CREF indexed about 65% of their $81B stock portfolio to the Russell 3,000 index. CALPERS indexed 85% of their $41B stock portfolio to the Wilshire 2500. Other well known corporations who index a large portion of their pension funds include Deere, GM, and IBM.
He also does a good job of reviewing Brinson's famous asset allocation study including how to use index funds to achieve your desired asset allocation.
All-in-all, Simon has written a very good book on index fund investing. It will be interesting to see if his prediction of foreign countries (Japan, England, Australia) embracing indexing turns out to be true or not.
I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including The Richest Man in Babylon, Bogle on Mutual Funds, The Millionaire Next Door, The 4 Pillars of Investing, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, Wealth of Experience: Real Investors on what Works and What Doesn't, Index Mutual Funds: How to Simplify Your Life and Beat the Pros, The Coffeehouse Investor, and the Armchair Millionaire.
Why Index Funds Are For You.......2003-10-28
Simon clearly presents all the evidence as to why passive investing, also known as indexing, represents the best method for any investor to succeed in the market. He goes further by showing how investing in a portfolio of index funds allows the average investor to achieve both less risk and and an expectation of higher returns. Thus the investor is in tune with the precepts of Modern Portfolio Theory.
The proof is here - trying to beat the market is a loser's game. It's way against the odds and neither individual investors nor profesionals have deomonstrated any ability to beat the market on a consistent basis. Indexing provides market returns with lower costs, lower taxes, and less stress.
An Excellent Manual for the Intelligent Investor.......1999-07-22
I have spent the last three months researching index funds for purposes of writing a professional paper, and this book is by far the best source of information on the topic that I have found. But it's more than that. In making the case for index funds, Mr. Simon provides a succinct, yet intelligible, description of modern portfolio theory and its place in the world of finance.
If you are interested in subjects like portfolio theory, decision-making under conditions of uncertainty, the efficient market hypotheses, game theory, the Third Restatement of Trusts and zero sum games, and just the mention of people as diverse as Peter L. Bernstein, John C. Bogle, Warren Buffett, Alfred Cowles, III, Eugene Fama, Mario Gabelli, Elaine Gazarelli, Edward C. Halbach, Jr., Roger Ibbotson, Peter Lynch, Burton G. Malkiel, Harry Markowitz, John Neff, William F. Sharpe, and Rex Sinquefield causes you to hyperventilate, then this book is for you.
Don't let the tacky cover put you off (It would be more appropriate for "How I Went From Nothing to Being a Billionaire in Three Weeks.") This is a well-written and useful book.
In-depth coverage of Index Mutual Funds.......1998-07-31
Scott Simon's book thoroughly reviews the many advantages of index funds, and the disadvantages of actively managed mutual funds. Many of the standard arguments are presented--the cost advantage of index funds, the difficulty in picking a superior actively managed mutual fund in advance, etc. But, the author has managed to add a few wrinkles here and there. Did you know that investing in index funds can reduce your stress? Well, according to this book that is one of the more important advantages.
The book is well documented (as you would expect from a former tax lawyer). Of note is a chapter devoted to the "nuts and bolts" of index funds which gives thorough details about the operations of index mutual funds. The appendix also contains good descriptions of the major indexes.
Book Description
Not just another media ethics book, this engaging and unconventional text breaks away from the usual practice of presenting the ethical theories of well-known philosophers in watered-down form. Instead, the contributors select a poem, movie, song, speech, or other cultural document, analyze it for implied or explicit ethical lessons, and then apply the lessons to a specific case that involved controversial media conduct.

Book Description
To survive and grow, leading-edge companies throughout the world recognize the need for new management accounting systems suited for today's advanced manufacturing technology. Cross-functionality, for instance, has impacted the measurement systems of corporations and is challenging traditional management accounting structures. Accountants must become interdisciplinary to cope with increasing cross-functionality and their organization's need to be increasingly responsive and flexible.
In Integrated Cost Management Sakurai discusses why certain practices have been chosen by each culture and the future implications of these choices, and he points to emerging needs and changes in the field.
Professor Sakurai clarifies the framework of Integrated Cost Management and then explores in each successive chapter critical issues and specific methods related to factory automation and computer integrated manufacturing. He provides a thorough discussion of target costing, overhead management, activity-based management (ABM), investment justification in computer-integrated management (CIM), and a penetrating study of the cost management of software development. Ample bibliographies accompany each chapter and include references to articles by authors from around the world.
Sakurai's overview allows management to perform a critical analysis of Japanese and American practices to gain an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses in each nation's concepts and techniques. This mutual inspection lays the foundation for a more sophisticated understanding of the true value management accounting holds in every aspect of your company.

Book Description
"In one slim volume, Feldman has managed to combine a history of U.S. water policy, two in-depth case studies on the politics of water, an analysis of the institutional biases affecting U.S. water policy, and a discussion of water policy in France. Nor is that all. The opening and closing chapters of the work set this panoramic view of water policy within a normative framework derived from theorists as disparate as John Muir and John Rawls."--Journal of Politics

Book Description
Cornelia Peake McDonald's story of the Civil War records a personal and distinctly female battle: a southern woman's lonely struggle in the midst of chaos to provide safety and shelter for herself and her nine children as their home is destroyed by the forces of war. Whether describing a Union soldier's theft of her Christmas cakes, the discovery of a human foot in her garden, or the death of her daughter, her story of the Civil War at home is compelling and disturbing. Her tremendous determination and unyielding spirit is a testimony to a woman's will to preserve her family.
Customer Reviews:
Gripping Narrative.......2007-08-27
Cornelia Peake McDonald's diary shows us what life was like for the South during the Civil War. This inspiring story shows the noble character of Mrs. McDonald and the people of the South in general as they fought for their homeland and their beliefs. Most of us can only dimly imagine the hardships they endured with courage, authentic trust in God, and sacrifical help from neighbors and friends--hardships which included battles being waged in their yards, the death of loved ones, cruel treatment, and women with children being driven from their homes as refugees.
A compelling read.......2006-03-20
This book provides a glimpse into the struggles and mindset of a southern wife & mom and her family during the civil war. Cornelia McDonald's fortitude and faith under extraordinary trials and tragedies is inspirational. We are a homeschooling family and I think this would be an excellent supplement to a high school student's studies of this time period.
An insight to life during the Civil war.......2005-09-08
I stumbled on Cornelia Peake McDonald when I discovered she was a relation. Of course I had to obtain this book when I was surprised to find her diary(or in this case an edited form of it) still in print.
This book is not for the light hearted history buff that wants the stories of battle. It is the diary of a woman living through extra-ordinary times. A diary that her husband asked her to keep when he announced that their town was going to be taken by the union while he had to go to Richmond. Col. Angus W. McDonald organized the 7th Virginia Cavalry and served on the staff of his friend Jefferson Davis.
The town of Winchester changed hands a few times. As such Cornelia was on the front lines. She had to deal with the union occupiers who were not too gentlemenly with seccesionists. Cornelia refused to turn over her house several times. Food was hard to obtain as access was denied to people that did not take an oath to the union. Yet she talks of union soldiers that violate orders and trade for flour and bread. As a good conferate she does not like the union forces as she describes life on the occupation. Yet she finds decent people that help her to what extent they can. In fact she even spoke up for a doctor that stayed in her house and did not bother her too much and kept soldiers from pillaging too much.
She speaks of fears of the occupation as everyday more and more mistreatment happens as people are forced from their homes. Some dropped in the middle of nowhere without food or money. The fact that women are accosted if they walk around in pairs. You feel hear heart ache at the loss of her youngest child.
Eventually she and her family become refugees to Lexington. You learn of her hardships as she deals with starvation and tried to get firewood for the family. Creating Confederate Candles, spinning wool for clothing. She even had to beg a man to make shoes for her boys.
She was faced with breaking up her family. Especially after the Col. died. She decided to keep them together no matter what. After the war, they learn their homestead was unusable and decide to stay where they are.
You also get to hear about the personalites of the war. She sits in a pew near Stonewall Jackson in church. Dinners with the Ashby brothers, meeting Robert E. Lee after the war. There are others that I will leave for you to find. :)
Cornelia is an interesting woman and a product of her era. She speaks out against slavery and yet is offended by actions of freed slaves. She speaks of the short lived effort of reconcelliation of the North that was destroyed by John Wilkes Booth. At first she is happy with Lincolns death as she thinks he got what he deserved. And yet on reflection she realizes it was a big mistake that will hurt the South. She talks about the abuse of Jefferson Davis and the fact an innocent woman and her innocent son go to the gallows for the assassanation.
It should be mentioned this is not the full diary and the fact she lost some of it as she moved around. Yet her memory is rather good as she rewrote events that were lost. She eventually penned a copy for each of her children.
All in all a facinating read about a tough resourcefull woman struggling to keep and feed her family.
interesting look at home life very near battlefields.......1999-11-16
I read this journal/reminiscence during a short period in whichI read several other Confederate women's diaries and reminiscences, and something that made this one particularly significant in my opinion was that unlike some of the other southern women whose writings I read, Cornelia McDonald lived along a major battlefront of the Civil War from the early months on. Thus, although she definitely preferred to have the Confederate forces around her and appears to have retained some bitterness toward the Union government after the war, she had a more complex view of Union soldiers than did some other Confederate women who lived further from the warfront through much of the war. She mentions the kindness of a shoemaker in her town who sympathized with the Union cause but made shoes for her large family of children even though she could not pay him, and at one point she even has a good word for the Union general who heads the forces occupying the town where she lives. The story of her struggle to feed and protect her children, help nurse soldiers, maintain tense but somewhat peaceable relations with soldiers who occupy her home, and support her family when she is eventually left alone is a story of courage, resourcefulness, pain, and gratitude. Cornelia had not lived only the life of a sheltered belle before the war, and despite the chaos around her, she manages to combine practicality and a love of beauty to keep enough sanity to survive the war and go on with family life afterward.
Book Description
"The wardens climbed into their truck, ready to leave. 'You'll need about seven cords of firewood. Concentrate on that. You'll have to get it all in before the snow grounds your truck.'""Though I didn't want to ask, it seemed important. 'What's a cord?'"So begins Pete Fromm's seven winter months alone in a tent in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness guarding salmon eggs. After blundering into this forbidding errand as a college lark, Fromm gradually come face to face with the blunt realities of life as a contemporary mountain man. Brutal cold, isolation, and fearful risks balance against the satisfaction of living a unique existence in modern America. This award-winning narrative is a gripping story of adventure, a rousing tale of self-sufficiency, and modern-day Walden. From either perspective, Fromm lives up to his reputation as one of the West's strongest new voices.
Customer Reviews:
A great adventure painted vividly & honestly..................2007-08-29
Started this absorbing adventure when I arrived home from my work day (in the office) & finished 3 hours later. What a thrilling few hours it was too!.
The story starts as a young, immature college guy rather niavely (& foolishly) takes on a 7 month job in the wilds with no experience, knowledge, or realistic idea of how he will cope out of his comfort zone & what it takes to survive on his own during the harsh winter weather living in a tent.
It's surprisingly honest & revealing - most adventurers only recount the highlights & thrills (without exposing their fears & weaknesses).
Pete Fromm writes vividly & from the heart - it takes a courageous man to expose his inner thoughts & anxieties to his readers.
I found some of his descriptions of hunting/killing the wildlife a little graphic (so vegetarians beware), but towards the end of the book his growing maturity & awareness of nature & the lives of creatures in the wild, give me reason to believe he learnt to love & respect the wildlife (even if he still needed to hunt & trap to survive).
By the end of the book, his words come across as skillful as any seasoned writer & it was not surprising that he now has several books published.
I hope all who read this book enjoy it as much as I did....................
Good Stuff!!!.......2007-06-03
What outdoorsman has not dreamed of walking into the woods and living off the land? Fromm does a nice job in explaining what needs to be done to make my dream a reality...he also does a GREAT job in detailing the fact that I belong at home (in the city).
Nice read.......2007-04-30
This was a great book..... read it over a trip to Hawaii....
If you are into camping or wilderness this is a great read... A great Escape!
One of my personal favorites of this genre.......2007-01-23
I truly loved this book on many levels, from the hunting and fishing experiences the author shared to his personal reflections on several moral issues, which I felt were very poignant and truthful.
The majority of this book covers the author's seven-month stay in a canvas tent, deep in the Idaho wilderness during the months of October through May. His job was to watch over and protect millions of salmon eggs that had been cached in the gravel of a nearby river.
His love of mountain man books and the thrill of experiencing nature in all of its variety are ideals that initially lead him to volunteer for the long winter assignment. Later, his enthusiasm changes to loneliness and regret as he faces his separation from his friends and family.
On the surface, his tale recounts his meetings with hunters, guides, outfitters, forest rangers, wardens, and outdoors enthusiasts as they pass by his lonely tent in his remote meadow. He speaks of the extreme winter weather he faced, the wildlife he encountered, and the steps he took to survive in an isolated and severe environment.
The real beauty of this book, however, comes when the author shares how painful moments of loneliness affected him and ultimately how these experiences changed him into a person who became very secure with his own creative abilities and very comfortable with his own company.
He records some very personal reflections regarding what it meant to him to shoot various animals for meat during his long winter stay. As he accompanies various guides and hunters on their hunting trips, he recounts how he felt when others did not view their kills as the resources he believed they were.
The author writes of loss, of waste, of fully utilizing one's resources, of missing one's family and friends and how dear trusted loved ones are to a soul, and of the gloriousness of wildlife and wilderness. He revels in the beauties that surround him and comes to truly appreciate his experience alone for several months in the mountains.
My words cannot do justice to the lessons I watched him learn and to the maturing and self-discovery he experienced. I also cannot do honor to the beautiful way he describes nature, its wildlife, and the incredible beauty to be found in truly wild places. Thus, you should experience this book for yourself if you love these types of things.
"Indian Creek Chronicles".......2007-01-19
Refreshing and engaging first-person account of coming-of-age from a wise young man alone in the wilderness. I've found it personally inspiring as a, well, middle-aged woman, and continue to pass along copies to young people I know -- not because it's preachy or anything (it's not), but Fromm is the sort of buddy a mom would be happy to see her college kid bring home for a weekend: self-reliant, reflective, modest, polite, resourceful, and a good sport. Don't worry: It's a Man's Man's book (my manly husband likes it and recommends it, too). That Fromm happens to be a naturally good writer, too, is a plus. It's gotten awards, so you don't have to take my word on that.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting read .......2007-02-21
I enjoyed this book & bought one for gift to an old friend who also enjoyed it. It is an interesting read.
Good reading for judokas.......2000-03-16
As a judo player, I enjoyed reading the sections detailing Campbell's judo days. It's worth having on those reasons alone.
