Anyone who collects a wage will appreciate the premise behind Crash of the Millennium: Wages are too low, relative to the growth of productivity, and thus we're in for a global economic disaster. Who would've thought that being underpaid would have such awful repercussions? Batra, an economics professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, has a long history of mostly accurate predictions. He predicted a major depression in 1990, which turned out to be just a recession, but also had quite a few hits: the rising stock market in the '80s, falling inflation and real-estate crashes in the '90s, and assorted wars and other upheavals.

As the 20th century comes to a close, he avers, a handful of long-term trends are coming to a disastrous climax: too much government spending, too much consumer credit, too many monopolistic industries, too much wealth staying at the top in the form of high corporate profits and unprecedented stock prices, and too little trickling down in the form of wages. He also tells you what to do to minimize your losses in this disaster: Sell stocks and bonds. Forget about real estate as an inflation shelter. Park your money in bank certificates of deposit. If you have to speculate, buy gold, silver, or platinum. It's radical advice, but Batra backs it all up with numerous charts showing historical patterns of inflation and speculative bubbles. And he candidly admits he has no idea where all this will end up; his advice merely applies to late 1999 and the first two years of the new millennium. Is he right? We'll know soon enough. --Lou Schuler

Book Description

It's remarkable how often the predictions of economics professor Ravi Batra have proven prescient. Years in advance he predicted the rise of fundamentalism in Iran, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the decline of communism, the stock market crash of 1987, and the September market slump of 1998. The one time Batra seemed to get it wrong was with the prediction of his best-selling book, The Great Depression of 1990. As it turned out, that depression was postponed by massive borrowing from abroad, and what we now face will be all the worse for the delay.

The premise of this book is as simple--and as powerful--as the law of supply and demand. In the United States, as in many other countries, we've been producing more and more goods, but wages have not kept pace. That disparity has been papered over by credit cards, easy loans and a huge speculative bubble in the stock market, but cracks are appearing in the walls. Russia, the "Tiger" economies of Asia, and Latin America have been hit hard recently, and Batra predicts similar tough times ahead for the United States. It will begin with a stock market crash in the fall of 1999, followed by a depression made doubly damaging by rising inflation. Its effects will reverberate through the early part of the coming decade.

In The Crash of the Millennium, Professor Batra describes how individuals, businesses, and governments can prepare for the hardships that lie ahead. And he tells us how, for those who survive, the future beyond the dark horizon holds decades of prosperity and peace.

The author of five international best-sellers, Batra is known for successfully predicting:
the stock market crash of 1987
the fall 1998 U.S. stock market slump
the current market turmoil in Asia and Latin America
a fundamentalist revolution in Iran in 1979
the decline of communism
the fall of the Berlin Wall

5 out of 5 stars The Crash of the Millennium and PROUT.......2007-08-08

This book was one of two recommended by Dr. Ravi
Batra to give introductory and background info to help appreciate and understand the PROUT (Progressive Utility Theory)as further presented in "After Capitalism". It is well written and enables understanding of what has been going on in the World under the misleading title: "Free Market Democracy". Citizens of the world should read these books and put their lessons into practice before it is too late.

1 out of 5 stars The crash is coming. Or did we miss it?.......2005-11-10

Batra predicted the "crash of the millenium" in 1990. Didn't happen.

Then he predicted it again in 1995. Still nothing.

So he predicted it yet again in 1999- when markets were moving downward. Aha! He almost managed to predict the present. Probblem was that what we say in 2000 wasn't the huge economic collapse he'd predicted, but just the burst of a bubble that only went back two years. Looking at the last 25 years, we still see a steady, gradual growth in US GNP with no sign of the meltdown Batra predicts.

But buck up, Ravi; maybe it'll happen in 2010.

5 out of 5 stars Dr Batra offers profound insight into historical development.......2002-10-06

Most economists agree the objective of capitalistic development is the accumulation of capital. Where the economists differ is in their interpretation if this is a good or bad thing. Ravi Batra belongs to a novel school of thought that thinks this is a good thing at the outset but becomes a bad thing over time. This is because the class of guardians of capital, the owners, builds wealth through sheer prudence, foresight and courage in productive enterprise. Over time, as wealth passes to generations raised in luxury, the virtues degenerate. At the same time, the class of owners becomes a mix of old money and new. Where the new money has some of the old virtues, the old money now has none of it. The social (including work) ethic degenerates over time. At some stage, it doesn't matter HOW one makes and expands a fortune but only that you DO. Part of the transformation of capitalism is its evolution from productive enterprise to financial activities, where unearned gains become the propagating mechanism for the class of wealthy. Speculative bubbles begin to take over in financial markets from time to time. When the bubbles burst, as they inevitably will, the social consensus is challenged. Each burst becomes a bigger challenge to maintain the order. At some state, a class of military leaders wrest control to re-establish order.

As for the bubbles, when share prices surge the wealth of those with capital in the markets expands in relation to the rest who do not own wealth. The amount of wealth becomes more unevenly distributed, even if a middle class has some. The growing divergence accelerates the decline in the social ethic. Also, helping the decline is the faltering social responsibility of employers to their workers, which promotes a feeling of alienation by the HAVE-NOTS to the HAVES.

In short, what Dr. Batra is writing about is a larger historical dynamic or evolution. He is not a technical analyst looking at stock charts for signs of a bullish reversal, or an economist strictly measuring the development in terms of the mix of fiscal and monetary policies. His frame of reference is much bigger than that. He is writing about a historical context based on his interpretation. At the same time, what really makes his work so fascinating, is his deep insight into the larger collective philosophy. He writes about the degeneration in social and environmental conditions associated with a human project based on a materialistic worldview. He proposes a much better framework for human beings, a spiritual framework, based on the ideas of his great mentor, PR Sarkar.

It is in this way that his books should be approached. Exact timing is difficult for all, but at least with Dr. Batra's work it is possible to gain an understanding of the social dynamic behind the developments and to see a positive way forward. Dr. Batra's works are a profound contribution. That said, his predictions have been quite accurate. Just look at a chart of stock prices from 1980 to 2002. It clearly reveals a huge bubble from 1983 to 1999 and a plunge since then. We are seeing the bursting before our very eyes. This is the history he his describing and explaining. That is a great achievement indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Ravi!.......2002-08-06

Maybe the timing wasn't quite right but Ravi's points are being born out in the market and in the overall economy at this time. While those who acted as though the bubble would never burst are licking their wounds, my husband and I, who took Batra's advice, have not lost a penny but instead have continued to make modest but consistent gains in the value of our portfolio. It is true that we got out of the market a few months too early, but we probably would not have made as much during those months as we would have lost had we been invested when the market plummeted a couple of weeks ago.

We are not economists, but what Batra says makes sense to us. If wages remain relatively unchanged while wealth is being concentrated in the hands of those at the top and if at the same time productivity increases - then how is the economy to sustain itself? Certainly, a collapse can be delayed by borrowing, but that fix is temporary at best and will in the end cause greater misery.

We are grateful for Batra's clarity and foresight, and we only hope that everyone will assess his/her financial condition on August 14th right along with the CEOs of the top 1000.

5 out of 5 stars Crash!.......2001-10-30

I was trying to see if anybody who posted their reviews earlier (in 2000) have posted any updates after the stock markets have crashed so far in 2001. Also, today there was a news that "Argentina Signals Default on at Least $38 Billion of Debt,...". While everybody agrees that US is in recession, lots of layoffs, low profits etc., let's hope we don't get into that ugly inflationary depression as Ravi predicts ...

All the armed forces were set in motion for this war. I regretted that I was not involved; and being destined to carry back to my regiment the knowledge I had acquired at the school, I saw myself condemned to spend several years in the depot with a whip in my hand, making recruits trot round on elderly horses, while my comrades were fighting at the head of troops which I had trained. I did not find this prospect very pleasant, but how was it to be changed? A regiment must always be fed with recruits, and it was certain that my colonel, having sent me to the school of cavalry to learn how to train these recruits, would not deprive himself of the services which I could render in this respect, and would keep me out of the fighting squadrons.

        Book Description

1894. The Memoirs of Baron de Marbot is considered to be one of the best written and most informative of all the memoirs to come out of the Napoleonic period. The book is an autobiographic account of Marbot's life, which begins from his birth in 1782 to this death in 1854. Marbot was a Lieutenant-General in the French Army and aide de camp to several of Napoleon's Marshals. He went on more than one mission for the Emperor himself. He fought in nearly every campaign, from 1800 through Waterloo, and was present at many of the big battles of the era, usually in a position to give insights into core level decisions. This is definitely a must read for anyone interested in Napoleonic history.

General, later the Baron, Marbot, came from a family which might be described as landed gentry. His father served in the bodyguard of Louis XV and later in the Republican army. Marbot himself was a soldier from the age of 17 and fought in the wars of the Republic and the campaigns of Napoleon. His memoirs were written for his family and his intimate circle, without thought of publication, and it was not until after his death in 1854 that his family were persuaded to offer the manuscript to publishers.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Military Memoir?.......2002-09-10

Well, maybe not THE greatest, but I can't think of a better one right now and I have read a lot of them. Marbot was an ADC to several of Napoleon's Marshals and went on more than one mission for the Emperor himself. To be truthfull, Marbot is not perfect, he brags a little, but much of what he writes about is documented elsewhere, and he without doubt was an accomplished officer who knew his trade VERY well. He fought in nearly every campaign, from 1800 through Waterloo, and was present at many of the big battles of the era, usually in a position to give insights into corp level decisions. His report on Eylau is his most repeated story, though his stories form 1809 are my favorites. This is a must read, really a MUST read, for Napoleonic readers.

Douglas E. Winter, author of Stephen King: The Art of Darkness and editor of two major dark-fiction anthologies (Prime Evil and Revelations), may be the reigning expert on modern horror. If his book Clive Barker: The Dark Fantastic is not the definitive biography of that polymathic author-playwright-auteur, it is only because the volume appeared when its subject was still in his late forties.

At 501 pages, plus 50 pages of endnotes and nearly 100 pages of Primary and Secondary Bibliography, The Dark Fantastic is an impressively thorough document. It covers Clive Barker's life from before birth (giving background on his parents, grandparents, and the hometown he shares with the Beatles) through the early years of struggle to his successes as an internationally bestselling author, Hollywood screenwriter-producer-director, and family man. The biography makes it clear that Barker has always had exceptional talent. (The Dark Fantastic includes, as an appendix, a previously unpublished story, written in Barker's early teens, "The Wood on the Hill." This uneven but fully developed fable of hubris is a tale authors twice as old would be proud to have written.)

Readers expecting a tell-all biography will be disappointed. A good portion of The Dark Fantastic is devoted to summaries and assessments of Barker's creations in many media. However, Winter's critical examinations are interesting, sympathetic, and honest. The Dark Fantastic is a must for all Barker fans and all serious scholars of horror and the fantastic. --Cynthia Ward

                Book Description

Clive Barker: a modern myth-maker, explorer of our darkest instincts and ultimate fears, the writer who -- more than any other contemporary figure -- has shaped our nightmares through diverse media. Novelist, playwright, scriptwriter, artist and director, he is a master at twisting the mundane to make it fantastic, frightening and ultimately meaningful.

Douglas E. Winter's detailed and highly literate biography, made possible by unprecedented access to Barker and his closest friends and family, offers readers a privileged insight into Barker's own story: his Liverpool childhood and adolescence; his forays into the world of theatre, mime and direction; his meteoric rise to fame as the author of the Books of Blood and Weaveworld, and the director of Hellraiser; his move to Hollywood to pursue a film career and his growth as an artist in many different media, which has taken him from theatre -- the first form of human expression -- into the digital age.

Interwoven with this revealing and personal journey into Barker's life is a grand tour through all of his fiction and film, from his earliest unpublished work -- including the short story "The Wood on the Hill," which is published here for the first time -- up to his most recent novel, Coldheart Canyon and beyond, giving a tantalising glimpse of things to come.

Clive Barker: The Dark Fantastic unlocks the beating heart of a polymath, a creator, a true artist, and reveals at last a man with one of the twentieth century's most phenomenal imaginations, and the vision to lead us on many strange and fabulous journeys in the years ahead.

                5 out of 5 stars thorough insight.......2005-01-15

a powerful, enlightening and elegant look inside the life of an amazing talent. Another one of my favorite biographies (that I've read in the last year) is Aldous Huxley, An English Intellectual, by Nicholas Murray - but this one on Clive Barker is phenomenal! I'm stunned by the exhaustive research and careful analysis that these highly gifted biographers bring to the table.

Winter is highly descriptive and brings revelation after revelation in vivid, intelligent detail. My only complaint would be that practically every rock is unturned in Barker's various works. This is great if you have read or seen them all; but if you are new to Barker, it pretty much gives a lot away! This complaint is overcome by the magnitude of such a monumental work as this. Winter is a true genius. The skilled writing is so entertaining that any sin is easily forgiven!

Artists who have left (and are leaving) such a profound influence are worthy of the infinite efforts of a truly grand investigator/author; and Mr. Barker got the expert treatment on this one, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Insert witty title here........2004-10-01

I took this book out from the library because I was in the mood to read non-fiction about fantastic fiction. I hadn't actually read any Barker, except for two false starts on Sacrament. I now intend to rectify that situation, as I've gone out and fetched myself a copy of Weaveworld and intend to get to it forthwith, followed by his other books. This is the best biography I've read (although that's a limited number) and certainly a fascinating look into an author I knew very little about beforehand. I wish Mr. Winter's look at King was as recent, because then it would be high on my list of priorities as well.

                4 out of 5 stars A fascinating read........2003-04-05

Reading about Clive Barker's polymathic inclinations, one recalls a scene from his book, The Great and Secret Show. In that tale, postal worker Randolph Jaffe, assigned to the dead letter room, unwittingly finds himself at a spiritual crossroads of America. Uncovering hidden truths by exploring the ramblings of the lost, the lonely, and the mad, Jaffe gets a glimpse of other worlds just under the surface of the "real" one.

Clive Barker has also glimpsed other worlds, but rather than driving him mad, these visions have compelled him to communicate what he has seen to others. This compulsion has led him to express himself in a multiplicity of media, including the sketches he drew as a child (and indeed, throughout his life), the plays he wrote in his twenties, the short stories he penned as he matured, the movies he directed, or even now, in the portraits he paints. It is this impulse that Douglas Winter, a polymath in his own right (lawyer, journalist, editor, author, book critic, public speaker), attempts to chronicle and explicate in The Dark Fantastic.

The book is arranged chronologically, following Barker from his early life in Liverpool, to his years on the London theatre scene, culminating in the present day, where we find him in Hollywood at work on his latest undertaking, the multimedia project known as The Abarat Quartet. Winter seems to have had unrestricted access to his subject and to those around him, as he cites knowledge gained from interviews with Barker and a plethora of Barker's family, friends, lovers, ex-lovers and business partners. Although Winter makes no claim of objectivity, he maintains a respectable distance from his subject, providing valuable insights into both the man and his work. Doing so, he makes a convincing case for Barker's inclusion in the pantheon of the leading creators of fantastic literature.

Perhaps the most important revelations are found near the end of the book, where Barker becomes more comfortable with his sexuality, finding true love with photographer David Armstrong. There also, he deals with the death of his father and his subsequent descent into depression. Barker's latest epiphany is the most fascinating, as he comes to realize that hundreds of paintings, seemingly created at random to combat his depression, all contained common themes, themes that eventually coalesced to form the basis of his Abarat Quartet project. The fact that he unconsciously worked his way towards mental health, even while breaking new barriers, is both inspirational and awe inspiring.

The book's upbeat ýending" (Barker's only fifty as of the publication date) bodes well for the future. Barker, it seems, will continue to receive messages from other realities, filtering them through his artistic sensibilities to make them more palatable to us lesser mortals. We, the audience, merely have to open our minds, experience his work, and learn. By allowing Barker to take us to other worlds, we can more easily absorb the lessons he has to teach us about our own.

4 out of 5 stars the man and his art.......2003-01-09

I do not often read biographies, but since Clive Barker is one of my favorite authors and I enjoy his writing so much, I figured I would give this book a shot. First off, if this book were just about the life of Clive, it would be at probably only half as long. Winter uses much of the book as an in-depth critical analysis of Barker's fiction. At first I didn't like this method, and if you are not familiar with all of the works he discusses, the respective sections may not be as informative. However, as I read more and more of the book, it became clear that Winter was not only analyzing Barker's fiction, but Barker himself as well. At times this works wonderfully, shedding light not only on Barker as a writer and person, but on the process of creating art and literature. I learned a lot about writing and many times discovered things in his fiction that I had not seen before. Thus, if one was rereading Barker's works, Winter's book could be an insightful commentary. The only problem that I had with the book was that at some points if felt not like a biography but only a critical interpretation of certain pieces. The in-depth analysis of most pieces of Barker's work seemed a little overboard for a biography. Otherwise, this is a very well-written, insightful, and overall entertaining book. A must for any fan of Barker, fantastic fiction, or an interest in creativity in general, since Barker seems to leave very few creative endeavors unexplored.

This theisis was a good attempt to cover flo's traumas as an unwilling player in Motown's chief Berry Gordy's game plan, we all know she was denied a chance to shine, and suffered humiliation, and dismissal from

This book contains good information about the politics and the business aspects surrounding Florence Ballard's departure from the Supremes but it does not go into detail about her personal life. This is a thesis written by a college student who happened to be a huge Supremes and Florence Ballard Fan. This is not a biography so if you're looking for juicy details about America's Sweethearts and want to know what really went on behind the scenes, I recommend Mary Wilson's, "Dreamgirl, My Life As a Supreme."

Hopefully, someone will write a biography on Florence Ballard's life in the near future because her life story is definitely one that should be told (if there is one out there that I don't know about, please let me know). The "Dreamgirls" character Effie, is "loosely" based on Florence's life but that just doesn't do this fallen star justice. She deserves to have her own life story developed, not a record-label story, or a girl-group story, but a Florence Ballard story, to let everyone know that Diana Ross wasn't the only star in the group. Mary and Florence just never got their chance to shine.

5 out of 5 stars need for florence to get her due!!!.......2007-02-25

I am an ardent fan of the original Supremes which included the wonderful FLo Ballard. What Motown did to her was awful and a bit too late for her due. this book was easy to read and pointed out the difficulty in trying to fight Mowtown, Her advisors were shameless and it was a sad end to a wonderful life.
If you are a Supremes fan this is a must read. Thanks for having it available. Already passed it on to a friend.
Also thanks to Effie of "Dreamgirls"

I saw Dreamgirls on opening night, and I was moved to do a little bit of research on the Supremes to try to spot some of the real people behind the stories told in the flick. Effie's character in Dreamgirls is based on Florence Ballard, and the outstanding performance in Dreamgirls made me want to see how Flo and Effie compare.

The challenge is that Florence Ballard has become one of those mythological figures who people have a love/hate relationship with. It's hard to see her as the human being without saying "she failed to play the music game and got the consequences" or "she was sacrificed at the altar of Berry Gordy's and Diana Ross's quest for glory".

This appears to be a self-published adaptation of a master's thesis. I have to give the author a lot of credit. I feel that he put in good work to get this published in the '80s and he has taken on the task of trying to research Florence when others would not. I don't know how much work he put into trying to put this into book form. It's only 75 pages or so. The first 15-20 are mostly rehashing history of Motown stuff, a story that has been told more skillfully elsewhere. The last ten pages or so is a summary of what was a short book.

If you're a Supremes completist it's probably worth owning this book used to support further research on the group. Otherwise, most readers can gain what they need from treating the summary at the end as an above average magazine article or borrowing a library or used copy of the book.

As far as what new info there is, I feel that the best things are opening the door on some of Flo's legal troubles post-Supremes. From what is told here, it sounds that Flo made a poor choice in a husband/manager and made a horrible choice in a lawyer who embezzled funds from her. Yes, Motown probably blackballed her. There's some heresy in this book that leads you to believe that. But it's tragedy that when Flo desperately needed someone to trust, noone was available to help her transition.

Motown exploited its artists hunger for stardom in some very exploitive relationships. Florence Ballard is a tragic casualty of Motown. But in some ways Diana Ross doesn't appear to be that happy either. I'm going to have to read Mary Wilson's biography to get what is probably a better perspective.

I applaud the author's efforts, and I hope that better biographies on Florence or group biographies on some of the other tragic soul figures of the 60s and 70s will emerge in new popular interest in the area.

Zurich Robinson is a young black starting quarterback for an NFL expansion team who, after refusing the sexual advances of a local sportscaster, finds himself accused of her rape. Readers know he didn't do it, because he's staying celibate while he figures out his sexual identity, a process complicated by the fact that he's got two different men interested in him--one just for the sex, and one for the love. His defense attorney has romantic problems of her own. Luckily, his grandmother has enough faith-driven wisdom to see everybody through. Overall, And This Too Shall Pass isn't quite as engrossing as Harris's Invisible Life series, although fans of that book will be intrigued by Basil Henderson's supporting role here.

                                                  Book Description

A stellar quarterback, an ambitious sportscaster.  What happens when rising stars collide?

In And This Too Shall Pass, Harris takes us into the locker rooms and
newsrooms of Chicago, where four lives are about to intersect in romance and
scandal.  At the heart of the novel is the celibate Zurich, a rookie
quarterback for the Chicago Cougars whose trajectory for superstardom is
interrupted by a sexual assault charge by Mia, a sportscaster with her own
sights on fame.  With his career in jeopardy, Zurich hires Tamela, a high-powered attorney, to defend him, while Sean, a gay sportswriter, covers the story and uncovers his heart.

All of these characters face the challenge of keeping the faith--in themselves and in God--while Harris's heartfelt storytelling reveals how the love of
family can help one to face the terrible legacy of long-held secrets.
Throughout these characters' search for self-knowledge, Harris weaves the
stories of MamaCee, Zurich's grandmother, whose lessons of faith teach one and all that "this too shall pass."

Breaking new ground in contemporary fiction, And This Too Shall Pass entertains and affirms with its stirring message about the healing power of family and faith.

This is the first book by E Lynn Harris that I have read and it was actually better then I thought. I just finished reading a book called Passion Marks and saw this one pop up on a search. I truely enjoyed the character Zurich on his quest to find himself while being engulfed in the homophobic world around him. Then I felt a conection with Sean for some of his views on being black and gay and having faith. Most of all I liked the character Mama Cee, she really bought peace within the book...plus reminded me of some of my older family members. I think this was a very well written book and I'm now about to order Invisable life and start that series.

3 out of 5 stars The Sisterhood Journey Bookclub Review.......2005-07-12

This novel brought about a lively discussion as issues ranged from Gay Rights to Gays vs. Religion and family, from facing fears, to Male Dominance to Hetero-Sexual cultivation plus more. This book, which started off a little dry for most of us, was full of surprises and twists, not to mention love and romance. We voted this Novel as recommendable (2.5).

It will help you get through one of the most difficult periods in your life and will encourage you to move on. It is also helpful to read this in order to understand what other infertile couples go through. Very easy to read.

This book is amazing. If you do not believe in a higher power it is not for you. The author understands how we feel as she is going thrugh it too. This is a must have for all couples who just don't understand. Be prepared though, you will need a whole box of tissues.

Thank you to the author for putting all of my feelings in front of me/us. I have given alot of my energy to becoming pregnant and things that I once enjoyed have become a hard chore. With this book, it will give you a sense of peace regardless of your religion. The 12 steps are very helpful and something I have ran copies of and placed them around our house. Another thing was the poems, each and everyone touched our heart and soul. My husband and I would read this together at times and then at times I would read it by myself. Thank you so very much for writing this little book.

4 out of 5 stars Unique & needed book for infertile AND their family/friends.......2004-03-16

I have been searching for a book like this for a long time. Not one that is full of Christianity or medical help or help choosing a path, just one to read so I don't feel so alone, confused, and hopeless. This book let me say "yes-that's EXACTLY how I felt/feel" and get some emotion out as well.

It's not the most eloquent or best-edited of books, but it really doesn't matter, because it fills a need in the market that is so lacking. IT IS ESPECIALLY GREAT FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS. Because, let's face it, they usually just don't get it...the pain of IF is so complex and hard to explain to the fertile world, and this really does it.

My appreciation to the author for putting herself out there on this one. I think it will make a lot of IF women/couples feel a lot less crazy and alone.

                                                          Book Description

I was born the youngest of three children in 1973 to a diverse heritage. My mother is Mexican-Hungarian and my father is full blooded Italian, so emotions ran high in my household. My parents divorced when I was four years old, and although I lived primarily with my father and two siblings in Yonkers, New York, I also spent much of my time in the Berkshires with my mother. I went to a small private Catholic high school for girls in Manhattan called Notre Dame, and it was there that I discovered my love of poetry. Writing became a way for me to express myself. I went on to Syracuse University in 1991 with the intentions of becoming a writer, but found my love of teaching instead. I became a special education teacher and settled in the Berkshires after college with my husband. My daughter, Emma, was born in 1999 and she is my everything. Since that time I have been divorced, and I had to learn how to truly survive on my own and take care of my little girl. It was a scary and extremely emotional time in my life, but it has helped me become the person I am today. Through it all I have turned to writing as my solace, and I am sure that will continue with each new experience. I have also had the good fortune to find my soul mate. Our road has not been an easy one, but we seem to complete and complement each other in a way I did not think possible. Many of my poems were written to him. Somehow, we have made it through the hard times, and after much hurt and healing we are getting married in December.

I wish I knew Kimberly Ripley personally, as I think she'd be a great therapist for moms in the throes of parenting teens. Just when I thought I was the worst mom in the world, I read this book and found out I wasn't alone. Lots of teenagers pull stunts like the author's and mine! And with Kimberly Ripley's humorous perspective---both she AND her teenagers survived the years of teen angst.

Got teens? Got friends with teens? ANYONE with teenagers HAS to read this book. It's hilarious!

This collection of hilarious and insightful essays is sure to thrill the parent in all of us, whether we actually have children or not! Mrs. Ripley's mastery of the tongue-in-cheek style that is obviously so necessary to not only parents, but family writers in general, is evident on every page of this enthusiastic and enjoyable collection of essays. A must for any parenting bookshelf, it would fit perfectly between Dr. Spock and Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul, it's also the perfect gift for parents of teens-to-be. Far from scaring them off, however, this collection of touching tales will only convince them all the more that the teen years are so very special and precious. (If only they could do something about the smell . . .)

Every nook and cranny of modern family life is closely examined under Ripley's keen eye for observation and unique habit of catching perfectly the understated hilarity of everyday conversations. From dirty rooms to music recitals, from student drivers to telephone wars, Ripley evokes the lighter side of family life that no doubt has her own children blushing to this day!

Don't believe me? Try the following examples on for size:

"At that moment I wanted to fall off my chair and slither away like a snake. What I had expected to be a mother's proud moment was a nightmare. And I still had to go home and write the review!

"When the show ended the music director congratulated parents on their children's wonderful performances. I got a cold hard stare."

"When our older daughter is in the house simultaneously she and Jim wage what we refer to as phone wars.

`Jim, I need the phone,' Judy will demand.

`Judy, I just got on,' is the standard reply.

"Of course he's been on for so long the receiver imprint on the side of his head has grown purple, but he won't relinquish his prize body part without a fight!"

-An excerpt from the story "Is Jim There?"

"Her room, in addition to housing my daughter and whichever girlfriends she hauls home for the evening, is also home to three large pet rats. The caged little darlings peer at me with their beady eyes, and slither their nasty tails at me each time I enter the room.

"As they slithered and I ransacked, I was aware of their impervious aroma wafting throughout the supposedly "clean" bedroom. Their beady eyes watched me as I confiscated eleven half-finished bottles of caffeine-free Pepsi, eight damp bath towels, nine dirty socks, and more pairs of dirty undies than I could count. There was no partridge in a pear tree. She doesn't own a pear tree."

-An excerpt from the story "Unnatural Disasters"

Though I'm not a parent, as an ex-junior high school teacher in the public school system, these poignant and pointed stories had me rolling with the memory of past students and relived scenarios. When the stress and emotional roller coaster of raising a modern teenager gets to be too much, reach quickly for "Breathe Deeply, This Too Shall Pass" and give yourself an unexpected treat. Your only complaint will be that each story ends too soon!
