        Book Description

        Book explores guilt, sacrifice

By Lise Hausrath Simmons—The Reston Times Newspaper

“A mother's guilt and the ultimate sacrifice of her youngest son on the killing fields of Belgium during World War II are explored in a simple yet touching book by Wade Gilley, a Reston resident.”

        Review by Wytheville Enterprise—Wytheville, Virginia

Al Jennings of Wytheville, VA grew up in Fries with Russell Gilley. They were friends. “He was an outgoing, happy person. He liked to joke and was very laid back. He never got excited,” recalled Jennings.

He noted that young draftees had no choice in the branch of the military they were to serve during World War II. If they volunteered, Jennings said, they could choose. “I got my dad to sign for me and went into the Navy. Russ' mother signed for him and he went into the Army. I never saw him again,” Jennings said

Review By Heather Froeschl of www.Quilldipper.com

Russ's nephew, author Wade Gilley, shares the tale of just one of America's heroes. This heart touching true story will leave the reader with a little deeper insight into what it means to be a soldier, an American son and a “hillbilly” from Virginia.

        Book Description

Baudrillard Live gathers together many interviews which have been published in very different locations and publications into a coherent work. New interviews and an introduction make available the conversational thought of one of the leading French intellectuals associated with postmodernism. The scope of the interviews is enormous, from the experience of visiting the cinema, to views on film and photography, on through the Gulf War and the new world order. Baudrillard is well known for his critique of modernity and this work complements his writing, revealing the French theorist's talent for thinking on his feet. The book provides a peerless supplement to his often difficult writing, illuminating many points of contention in his work, particularly those relating to postmodernism.

Baudrillard Live is far more than a supplement. It is in its own right a document of the highest importance in the critique of modern society, as it raises many disturbing issues and problems. The collection is edited by a leading authority on Baudrillard's work.

The book appeals not only to those interested in French intellectual life, but also to those interested in the debate surrounding modernity and postmodernity. It is an essential document in the understanding of one of the most creative and important French thinkers alive today.

        5 out of 5 stars Interesting Interviews.......2000-06-05

This book consists of Baudrillardfs interviews about various topics such as cinema, power, politics, and his books and articles. Time when he was interviewed varies but his insistence is consistent. Probably, this is because Baudrillardfs attitude toward his works is consistent and very prudent. The constitution of his interviews has no problem. He always answers questions clearly. Above all, I am impressed by his answer about his sociological or philosophical position. He considers himself neither a sociologist nor a philosopher: gTheorist? I agree. Metaphysician? Perhaps. Moralist? I donft know. My work has never been academic, nor is it getting more literary.h He is very free to talk about his works, which makes this book interesting. Therefore, this book is very helpful to understand Baudrillardfs thoughts and how he uses words such as gpowerh, gimageh, and gsimulationh. Moreover, this book contains index of key words, which is also helpful.

Two books that I think really are helpful if you're learning about real estate investing are this book, FLIP: How to Find, Fix, and Sell Houses for Profit and Dean Graziosi's Be A Real Estate Millionaire: Secret Strategies for Lifetime Wealth Today

5 out of 5 stars Chock full of knowledge.......2007-08-15

I bought this and another highly reviewed book on flipping and this book was vastly superior. It contains a wealth of information about every phase of flipping a property, including detailed information on how to calculate quiet costs, good rules of thumb for rehab costs, and detailed lists of what is involved in a rehab and the correct order to undertake them in. They have obviously flipped a lot of houses and have condensed their experience into extremely helpful lists and formulas that anyone can benefit from.

I could have done without the fictional storyline that accompanies each chapter, but since you can skip it without losing anything, I'm not docking their score.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Is An Excellent Investment.......2007-08-08

I've been interested in flipping houses since I first heard of the concept about 10 years ago. I just never knew where to start. This book walks you through the entire flipping process. It's written in an easy to follow, logical start to finish format. There are formulas for calculating all your costs and your profit before you even make an offer on a house. Outstanding book! I highly recommend it to anybody who wants to get started in house flipping.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference, not very well written.......2007-07-12

First, I must say that this is so far the best book I have read on this subject. The authors seem to be very experienced and knowledgeable in the field of rehabbing homes. I am very pleased with what I got for $15 (or whatever I spent). I feel that with this book, I could successfully FLIP homes. My first primary home was a fixer upper, and I did pretty much all of the work myself. I turned a nice profit when I sold it, but I think that I could have done better had I known then what I know now.

There was not a lot of information that was new to me, but the book did bring together a variety of related topics. Likewise, the authors presented a few smart systems for completing the project.

The reason I gave this book only 4 stars is that I don't like the writing style of the authors. This book could have easily been 150 pages or less. The font was a little big, and there was WAY too much worthless text, random anecdotes, and stupid analogies. One page in particular was about Punxsutawney Phil...it wasn't until the third or fourth paragraph that the author crafted some way of connecting that to flipping houses.

Overall an excellent book worth every penny (the authors need to stick to flipping houses though). I wish I could get my friend who has recently jumped headlong into rehabbing houses to read this book...

5 out of 5 stars Best book of it's kind.......2007-06-14

I am a small time real estate fix and flip investor. I have read many books on this subject and this is by far the best.

That's Alright, Elvis recounts the life of Scotty Moore, one of the early men behind the legendary Elvis Presley. Moore was already an accomplished musician (Rolling Stone Keith Richards says that Moore's music inspired him to play rock-and-roll) when, at the behest of Sun Records executive Sam Phillips, he took young Presley under his wing. It didn't take long for Moore's seasoned ear to discern the young singer's talent, one that would soon explode into the rock sound. Moore's relationship with Elvis deepened through the years as he managed Presley's career and played in his band, the Blue Moon Boys. But as Elvis's popularity skyrocketed, Moore's managerial role was usurped, and the professional relationship between the two ultimately soured over money and miscommunication. Moore continued his musical career and is now considered the quintessential rock guitarist by many in the industry. He maintains an admirable objectivity about his life with Elvis as he tells his story through writer James Dickerson. That's Alright, Elvis is a fresh take on a seminal period in both Elvis's life and in the history of rock-and-roll.

            Book Description

Category: Rock music/ Biography/ ElvisThe untold story of Elvis first guitarist and manager, Scotty Moore. For the first time, guitarist Scotty Moore tells the real story behind his years with Elvis Presley. When Elvis first showed up at Sam Phillip's Memphis-based Sun Records studio, he was a shy teenager in search of a sound. Sam asked Scotty and bass player Bill Black, both members of the popular country band The Tune Wranglers, to work with Elvis on his music in advance of his first recording session. While clowning around in the studio they came up with a version "That's Alright"; it was released as Elvis' first single, and launched his career. Scotty and Bill toured with the young singer, and played on all of his Sun sessions and his first recordings for RCA; Scotty served as the business manager for the trio, in essence working as Elvis' first manager. When the trio broke up, Scotty retired from music-making. He has maintained his silence about Elvis since, despite repeated requests for interviews to tell his side of the story. With Bill Black and Elvis both dead, he is the only remaining member of the original trio who can tell the true story of how Elvis transformed popular music---and how he created the guitar sound that has become the prototype for all rock guitar that followed.Jim Dickerson is the author of Schirmers Goin Back to Memphis. He is a Nashville-based journalist and writer.

            5 out of 5 stars A legend gets screwed.......2007-06-18

This is a great, but sad book. Scotty Moore was an innovator in early rock and roll music, and a substantial contributor to the success of Elvis Presley's music. It is true that Elvis had the voice, looks, sex appeal and all that stuff to make the young girls swoon. However, it was Scotty that met with Elvis, arranged the first recording sessions, and helped form the type of music that became rock and roll. Without him, Elvis would probably have ended up a gospel singer.

As this book points out, Elvis backed out of the verbal deal between he and his band regarding the split of record royalties. He put the guys on a small weekly salary that actually led to Scotty going into debt for the privilege of playing behind Elvis.

I think anyone who enjoys early rock music should be able to enjoy this book. While the story of Scotty is told well, it never gives one the impression that he is looking for pity.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading even if you're not an Elvis fan.......2004-02-13

Although not a technical genius, or a flambouyant showman, Scotty Moore is the first Rock and Roll guitar hero. He can be considered a discoverer, an inventor. He provided support, on and off stage, to a musical phenomenon, Elvis Presley. They both found a way of making three instruments and a vocal sound big. His riffs and syncopations inspired millions. Too bad he didn't make...millions.
His story is told in a warmly engaging way, filled with panorama; and not once does a bitter tone prevail.
As Elvis progressed, it seems that he (along with the powers that be) decided that Scotty's licks were not sophisticated enough, so Moore apparently was an occasional studio player after 1961. It's interesting that Big El summoned Scotty for his crucial TV Special - the word "Comeback" came shortly after December 3rd, 1968.
It's facinating to read about Mr. Bill Black, Elvis' first bassist. Black was another instinctual musician, limited but perfectly attuned to the new art form. He died a young man, but found a way onto the charts with the Bill Black Combo and strong instrumental workouts. He died in 1965 and it's too bad that Elvis did not mention his name on the TV Special section where he demonstrated how they got the big sound with just three guys.
I do not enjoy the storytelling in the second person: it would have been much more effective to have Scotty's words up-front throughout. Just like his guitar playing.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent biography.......2003-10-15

James Dickerson did a great job of telling the story of Scotty Moore. I was as impressed with the writing as with the subject. I read this as research for the biography I'm writing about Faron Young, and I must admit to disappointment--but not surprise--at the lack of mention of him. That aside, this is a book worth reading. Scotty Moore is a man I'd like to meet.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, simple tale of a world-class musician and Elvis.......1999-02-10

Scotty Moore is one of the unsung heroes of rock 'n roll and his writing style reflects his playing style- simple, precise and to the point. In a humble, matter-of-fact style, guitarist Moore recounts his experiences with the King in an eminently readable and interesting way. I have read many Elvis books and this is one of my favorites. After reading it, you just wished you could bump into Scotty sometime, buy him a beer and talk the night away.

            Customer Reviews:

            4 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good cross-section of 1950s US culture........2007-04-02

Bought this because I wanted to know what people are listening to when my parents were kids. Some albums were schmaltz and some really cool. Gives you an idea of what the whole country was listening to as opposed to teenagers who listened to Elvis.

Each album gets one jacket photo and one small page of description including tracks and stats. Makes me miss record jackets. There is a short interesting appendix on the overall decade in music. Bought the 50s and 90s and now looking for the rest.

Elvis Album is an over-sized, beautiful book. It's scrapbook style- photos of newspaper clippings with wonderful photos. It's a great book to have on your coffee table. I can't stress how well the book is put together. It's awesome!
